Ziphius, the aquatic drone

Hello everyone, Ziphius is an aquatic drone controlled by your smartphone or tablet. Although we are still in stage of development, we already have a fully functional prototype. This prototype has a Pi and Arduino inside. Right now, we are using Unity for the games development. It will be available to both Android and iOS. If you're interested, check our video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDlNh2fgUpo Your feedback is very important for us, specially now that we have been selected to be one of the semi-finalists on the Insert Coin competition, organized by Engadget. engadget (dot) com/2013/02/15/insert-coin-new-challengers/ Thank you.

Where can I find an online archive/library of aquatic plants, that will help me identify various lake plants?

I've said it all... It would be nice if I could narrow the species down one step at a time, simpily answering yes or no to descriptors. Picture comparing would be nice too...

How to make an aquatic plant water filter?

I'm making the kids a wading pool out of a poly water trough. I want to filter the water through a separate trough filled with aquatic plants with probably shale as the base. Not too sure how to set up the filter though. I want to recycle the water through both. I don't want to use chemicals and this will also be a proto-type for a chemical-free swimming pool when they are older. Help please!?

Solar, Wind, or Water Power: What is your green energy source?

From solar to aquatic, what are your forms of renewable energy? Any new ideas? I know another post in the "Green" topic talked about a gravity-powered LED lamp. What next?

Crazy fun, or a slow cruel death - I can't decide...

This is just crazy - two Ocean Engineering students created a "hamster-powered submarine" from "materials derived from common household objects" that connected a hamster wheel in a sealed, air-supplied vessel to a propeller, allowing hamsters to take themselves on aquatic jaunts.  (via BoingBoing Twitter feed) Seriously, it's a submarine powered by a hamster in its wheel.  I can't decide if the hamster is having loads of fun, or is being driven mad with terror. It doesn't seem very fast, though... They documented the build on their own website, but if you would like to see an instructable on it, go to the video and leave a comment to say so...

Tidbits of Olympic Proportions

Tetranitrate's Japanese adventures are not the only exciting happenings in the region: on Friday (08/08/08), the 2008 Summer Olympics began in Beijing, China.Despite concerns about air quality for the games and preparations, these games showcase some very cool designs, cultural aspects, and other miscellany that we would otherwise not have seen. The two featured buildings to check out are the National Aquatics Center and the National Stadium, more commonly referred to as the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest. They are very interesting buildings, and architecturally stunning as well. For the bike enthusiasts out there, Make Magazine posted this album of bicycles in Beijing. And some digital enhancement: China apparently wasn't happy with the fireworks display, so they added some CGI fireworks for television viewers. Link via Boing Boing Gadgets. If you find more cool things related to the Olympics, please share!

Ugly Ducklings

We consume millions of plastic bottles a year. In San Francisco there was a mandate to stop using bottled water in government buildings because the tap water here is good and there's no need to transport water thousands of miles just to stay hydrated. So it's nice to see an artistic assault on the plastic invasion."Many cities repopulate their urban rivers with ducks and swans to somehow clean their visible sewage waters. This installation hopes to clean the reality of the ducks which inhabit these sewage waters by adapting rubbish into their formsDuring a whole week plastic bottles will be floated over River Segura. The bottles will be bird shaped, aquatic species, and will form groups and families. All materials used in this installation will be recycled materials and will try not to disturb the inhabitants as much as possible. If the animal cannot adapt to its environment, the environment must adapt to the animal." original post with lots more pics
