High current variable voltage from an atx psu

What would be the most simplistic way to draw up to 10a on an atx PSU using variable voltage controlled by a potentiometer? I've looked at a few diagrams using the LM317 but it is limited to 1.5a. The only other VVR I can find is the LM350 but is still limited to 3a. Any ideas? I was thinking of stacking an arrey of LM350s in parallel but this doesn't seem like a viable answer.

Bench power supply build from ATX power supply acceptable voltage

Hi, I built a bench  power supply from an ATX power supply and I am not sure if the voltage is correct. I am getting 5.74 volts off of the 5 volt supply and 12.7 volts from the 12 volt supply. Is that too high to use or should I try to bring it down a little? When I built the supply I didn't have a 10 ohm power resistor so I used a 6 ohm 10 watt resistor. Could this be the reason for the higher voltage? Thanks for any help you can give me. Dan

Do ATX Power supplies convert AC to DC power?

Hello all, I am sure this is a silly question for the experienced, but seeing as I'm just starting to really get into this stuff, any help would be appreciated. I am writing to get a bit of consensus to assure myself the a ATX power supply will convert AC power in to DC power out.  I would like to save myself the hassle of taking apart a computer if this is not the case.  In the event I'm wrong, what does convert AC to DC power? Just to give you an idea of what I need this for, this power supply will be used to run the electrolytic etching process for use with copper in a copper sulfate bath.  I'll be using the etch process to etch through copper plates (saves a lot of money compared to ferric chloride) The last question I had is if anyone knows how to discharge any residual energy within the ATX system.  I have an instructable on converting the ATX into a power supply, but I feel like I read the residual power in the system can be quite nasty if it shocks you, so I'd like to avoid that.  In fact, any suggestions would be welcomed. Modifying ATX Power Supply for 12v Power - Easiest Method?

I'm building a small box with toggle switches on it. I want each toggle switches to turn on something simple (mostly just LED lights). I was trying to think of how to power the box, and I thought about using an old atx case power supply since I've got an old computer I could pull it out of. I'm seeking advice because I have no experience with wiring at all.. and I don't want to burn the house down. :) If I jump the green and black wires on the motherboard plug so that I can turn on the supply, couldn't I just buy a simple molex Y-splitter and plug it into an available molex plug, and then cut the yellow and black wires and use those for the power and ground? Here are the Y-splitters I'm referring to: http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC Cut off the plugs from the Y, and run the yellow and black wires to my switch and then run a power wire from the switch to the LED light or case fan or whatever I'm powering off of that switch. The switches I'm using are 12v automotive toggle switches. Would this provide the power I need? Would it be too much power? Should I put in an inline fuse or a ohm resistor or something to make it safer? I appreciate any opinions.. I'm curious if anyone has ever used a molex plug in this kind of way and how it worked. :)

Convert an ATX power supply into a regular DC power supply

I did this project https://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-an-ATX-Power-Supply-Into-a-Regular-DC-Powe/ just today, but all the results came out negative voltage (e.g. -11,45 on the 12v) on the multimeter. Did I do something wrong or is it supposed to be like that?

atx power supply wrong voltages

I've done some experimenting with an ATX power supply, trying to turn it into a bench top, and I've come close.  I have 1 more problem, the voltages are off.  Instead of 5v I'm getting 5.25, instead of 12 I get 11.4 and most dramatically of all instead of 3V I get 4V. Has anyone had this problem before and learned to solve it?

ATX PSUI shorting out

​Hi everyone, I hope I did this well, first time on this site, this is a question. I want to make my own soldering iron/heating element, I know I can buy them but it is a project of mine and I just want to know how it works and make it. I used to power a copper wire with a 5V ATX PSU at 16Amps, the psu shorted out and stopped. I read somewhere that you can prevent the PSU from shorting out when there is enough resistance on the wire so the current is not too high for the PSU. (Total nitwit on electronics btw) I was wondering if this is true, and how can I build a succesful soldering iron with a PSU, what transistor or what modifications to make. Also, would a longer wire/rod produce more heat than a shorter? red hot would be nice. Thanks in advance!

Are high power resistors really neccessary on a benchtop PSU conversion?

Was looking through the site and I was just wondering--why all the huge resistors on the bench-top power supply conversions of PC Power supplies? From personal experience this seems like a waste of perfectly good electricity.I know that they require some current to just stay on however in designing a project for my school's Engineering Technology department I found that the heat generated by such a small resistance (Around 10 ohms) was unacceptably high. Originally I was looking at Instructables and this sitethis site for inspiration but all the cooling measures taken to prevent the high power resistor from becoming a hazard seemed rather silly. A few calculations and experiments later with the 250 watt power supply and I determined that 160 ohm1 watt resistors and 1K 1/2 watt resistors were perfectly acceptable for the purpose of keeping the PSU awake and functioning. I connected one of each between each voltage and ground. According to calculations I can get away with dissipating a grand total of two watts or less spread across multiple resistors.The current divider rule dictates that if you add resistances in parallel, the resulting resistance will be smaller meaning more current will flow through the overall circuit. However this increased current will divide itself across the parallel resistances according to the rule Ix= RtIT/(Rx+Rt). The current through and power dissipated by the resistor you've soldered into the PSU will not change enough to be significant no matter how large or small a resistance you attach in parallel with it--with the exception of an effective short and what in God's name are you doing intentionally shorting the terminals of your bench-top PSU? Now several months later, the PSU is still operating happily and powering multiple micro-controller projects on a display board. Therefore I can reliably conclude that the high-power 10 ohm resistors in many computer power supply conversions are probably a gratuitous waste of wattage. You can get away with using a higher resistance and a resistor that dissipates much less current.

Has anyone used a ATX power supply to run a raspberry pi with peripherals such as hdd's and dvd drives. Adapt a computer ATX power supply to add a single 2 wire 12V connector

 I need to replace a 350W power supply that supplies a computer setup and LCD screen in an all in one computer. The failing power supply has one single 2 wire(one black, one white) connector powering a power board that supplys the power to the LCD screen. Can I use any ATX power supply that has the same or more amps on each of the 12V 5V and 3.3V and........ Can I adapt the spare 4 pin molex connectors to make a 2 wire single connector? Monitor powered by ATX

I searched for hours with varying keywords and can't find too much information...  12v to pin 1 and GND to pin 2 but what do I do about the neutral? I read a xbox 360 laptop mod but it involves the 5v too, and connects it to the power brick. I'm trying to do something different. Trying to make a lunchbox out of a macpro 1.1 case. 1 wire to plug into an outlet is better than needing two. Before I get into this project im trying to understand what I need to buy and feel kinda silly asking such a question which should be extremely simple but I want to be safe and dont want to fry anything. For those that are actually interested in what I'm doing, I kept staring at the case thinking "what can I make with this, and the items I have laying around?" I thought I'd 1-up the basic hackintosh build and go against the grain of using the case how it's intended. I flipped it so the side with the I/O ports were sitting flat, measured the inside which gave me 7" of workable space with 0.4" wiggle room which made perfect for an mini ITX to be laying flat down instead of against the wall. I thought I could take my dremel and cut out an area for a LCD monitor. I have enough DVD drives laying around as well that I could make a "push tray to eject keyboard" sort of slide out keyboard upgrading the rails, using an ultra thin keyboard with a track pad and top it off with sound activated lights and my 1.5 TB HD that's almost full of music. I realize I can do this with a laptop and pocket usb speaker/light effects, but it wouldn't be as cool and I wouldn't get to reuse these items I have sitting around.

ATX Power Supply Conversion

Hi Again, My question is when building an ATX power supply, Can you join the 12 volt leads with the 5 volts leads to make 17 volts? If not how can I get lets say 20 volts. I am going to use a DC to DC converter to make a variable power supply. I would like at least 20V in then I can adjust from 1.2 to 60 volts out. I use it now running directly off battery but would like to add it to the ATX build case. Thanks for any help again.

Make your own Laptop Power Supply from a modded ATX (desktop) power supply

There seem to be plenty of Ebay laptops that are being sold without power supplies. I've seen a few instructables where people are taking their desktop ATX power supply and making a bench power supply. From these bench supplies people are powering electronic circuits as well as other things. SO, that being said should you be able to power laptop computers from these ATX supplies? IF so, how would you go about doing it? Thanks! JP

Hey guys got a question. I want to add an ultra bright LED from my mini mag light to my atx benchtop power supply. The LED ran off 3v (2 AA’s.) The line I want to use is the 3.3v (14 amp) from the atx to power it. What size/power rating resistor should I use?

ATX power supply conversion

I know this is a long passed DIY. But while building a ATX Power supply I separated all the wires as stated. I then put the green and a black wire to a switch and added the 3 brown leads to the orange leads. When I plug in the unit the supply light comes on, but when I turn the green wire switch the main power LED goes out and no fan comes on. It acts like the switch is shutting the unit off.  Can anyone help. I am 60 years old and just getting into doing some bench work to pass the time. Thanks for any help.

Adjustable Voltage on PSU ATX

I have an old Rockford P450.4 amplifier that I salvaged an LM317T and LM337T from. It also had some two (2) potentiometers that I salvages as well. I have a 400W Coolamx PSU ATX that I turned into a bench supply. I have read that people have been using these two (2) IC's to maintain a constant voltage through variable adjustment. I have seen several tutorials on instructables, but that all lack clarity, instruction and do not provide enough detail. I could really use a good tutorial, but have failed to find one of great interest.

A do-it-all-in-one-cable For laptops(an idea) Using the ATX 24...

I just recently got an idea,its kind of an ingenious(well i think so) idea.ITs a do-it-all-in-one cable,a cable that connects to your laptops s-video,rca,vga,sound,and even usb through one cable using CAT5 cable for it(If cat5 contains enough cables in it)The cable at both ends will have the ATX 24 pin connector that connects to a project box,but thats another part,we will get to that laterS-Video ---------- 3 Data 1 common groundRCA ---------------- 1 Data 1 common groundVGA ---------------- 5 Data 3 common groundUSB --------------- 2 Data 1 5V 1 common groundSound ------------ 2 Data 1 Common groundGrand total = 15-mixing grounds/ 19 - separate groundsSo according to that,i would need 2 and a half CAT5 Cables(if i use separate grounds),which i am going to squish together into one big cable.Or 2 CAT5 cables (if i mix all of the grounds)Now,i would have all of the cables squished together into some tubing(heat shrink?,no too expensive in such a large amount)with the ATX 24 pin connector at each end.Now,the project box,it will have the opposite connector(the one that the other connector connects to) will go into a box with that connector soldered on a breadboard inside of it(i could get the connector from a computer,or 2(i have 2 fried motherboards so ...))and in the other side of the (plastic)box would be all of the connectors(Sound connector,VGA,Svideo,RCA,usb(maybe for IR receiver or something))that connects to the TV,or monitor.The other end with the same connector would connect to the laptop,it would have VGA,RCA or SVideo,Sound,and USBSo now that i got my point out,what do you think?That the all-in-one cable,or a bunch of tangled cables just to put video and sound to the tv,and that is without USB,whats the fun of not having a usb connector from your laptop 20 feet away from you,you could connect a web cam,to see yourself on the tv,or a ir receiver,to control the pc without a keyboard and mouse,or whatever else you can think of.So...what do you think(poin tout any mistakes i have made by chance)So...comment...or whateveri think this would be pretty nifty,no?

Visiting the ATX Hackerspace

I decided to visit austin, TX on my most recent vacation. While i was there i decided to drop in on the ATX hackerspace. The hackerspace is just over a year old but already has a large community. The space is located in an office park which makes it almost hidden if it weren't for the wicked bat logo As i came into the space, they were holding their weekly meeting, Once the meeting was over the crowd of about 30 people broke into a cacophony of geeky projects. A few people bent over a mysterious box trying to determine it's purpose. Another used the industrial sewing machine to create professional looking leatherwork. There were many other "newbies" to the space, who were given the low down by the night's host, Martin. The space is impressive given they have been at the current location for only 2 months. It has a lot of potential to be a powerhouse of awesome projects. What is interesting, is that the hackerspace (unlike most) is a for profit. That means it can bring in money and make money. This means if they want to build kits and sell them to benefit the space, its perfectly fine under the law. I work a lot with non-profit entities so its interesting to see this model I must say though, ATX hackerspace has one of the coolest logos i've seen. Thanks ATX for your hospitality and showing me around! Hope you enjoyed the stickers! Go visit! ATX PSU to Work Bench PS - Adjustable Voltage and Current question

I am working on converting an old 600W ATX PSU to a bench power supply for me to use for some lab work.  Not everything that I will be plugging into it will have built in current limiting capabilities.  The guide/setup i found on here that I will most likely be following are:  https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-PSU-into-Bench-Power-supply/  &  http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Computer-ATX-Power-Supply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply The first link is how I would like mine to end up looking. My PSU is rated as: +3.3V @ 32A +5v @ 50A +12v @ 24A -12v @ 1A -5v @ .5A My end goal is to be able to control the voltage and current output from each binding post.  I will be hooking up a multimeter to this as well and am thinking that i could control what it monitors by some dipswitch setup or switching setup(as far as to which binding posts it's monitoring). I do understand that V = IR.  So keeping 5v but only wanting 3A, i would increase the resistance which is why at first i thought i could play a POT in the circuit.  However after seeing how the voltage regulation was hooked up, I am confused how to do so now since it was connected in the fashion i thought i would need to control the current.  (https://www.instructables.com/files/orig/F2D/LMFU/FYYNECNH/F2DLMFUFYYNECNH.jpg) I would probably use a LM338 since it would allow for more current but again, i would love to be able to have the full 50A available all at one shot but i don't think those IC's allow for that. Voltage rail identification on LCD PCB

I am testing the DC rails coming off an LCD TV PSU so i can convert the unit to run off an ATX PSU. i have managed to find (labelled on the board) 12v, 12v, NC, GND, GND, GND, ?, ?  the last two aren't  labelled. the two pins (when tested to GND) are giving me -12v, could this be right? I'm guessing by this point ill just have to use the 12v rails, GND and -12v from the ATX to get this powered?  what else could those last two pins be?

LM350 and POWER SCHOTTKY RECTIFIER

Hi everybody.... Can anyone with the " expertize " with the LM350 and a Power Schottky Rectifier, tell me if I can use a Schottky rectifier at 10A instead of the LM350 with 3A, in a variable power supply, with 24V and 15A ATX power supply?  I´m new at this and I´m trying to build a Tattoo power supply from the ATX.  A link to the diagram.  https://www.instructables.com/files/orig/F2D/LMFU/FYYNECNH/F2DLMFUFYYNECNH.jpg   I read that the Schottky has less powerloss, but what is the difference, and please tell me as if I was 5 years old, so that it can sink in :) Iq0100

Help with Voltage Regulator

Hi, I have put one of these together for an ATX power supply and have come across something that I might be getting wrong.... In mocking up the LM317 circuit in breadboard (standar one found everywhere on line and on the LM317 pages), I have got the thing metering -11v to +11v??? I am using one of the black ground wires of the PSU on the black side of the volt meter, but cant figure out why I am not just getting positive voltages??? Could the diode be faulty? Or is this in fact correct? Any help appreciated...

Is anyone else annoyed by the prevalence of non-questions with question marks after them in the Answers section? Is this a manifestation of the proliferation of "upspeak"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_rising_terminal Perhaps a new rule should be instituted requiring all questions TO BE IN THE FORM OF A QUESTION, not a statement with a question mark after it. Remove short-circuit protection from a psu.

Hi, i'm new here and i have a little problem. I want to make a soldering iron because mine is broken. I have a ATX PSU, but when i short circuit the 12v(16a) output the PSU shutdown. I want to remove the short-circuit protection  from my psu, how i do ? I'm begginer in the electronics, so please help me step by step. BTW, Sorry for my crappy english, i'm just a romanian guy :P

Power supply help asap!

I am very disapointed. i just spent 4 hours working on a atx power supply. (look at my other forum post) i did everything they said. but whenever i turn it on and run it with something, it turns off. i noticed that when i hooked up the led to the green ad black wire, it was dim. and when my supply turns off, the led keeps on. what could be my problem? i put a 10 watt 10 ohm resistor in between the 5v line and the ground. any ideas. asap. thanks

add motherboard stand-offs to an RS enclosure?

I need to connect the board from a PC ATX power supply to a Plastic Radio Shack project enclosure. as a part of my ventilation / grounding scheme I've got the power supply on standard brass motherboard stand-offs. I don't want to connect any hardware through the case, for insulation purposes. I need a good way to hold the stand-offs (and by extension the power supply) sturdily in place... preferably with bits I can get locally (hardware store or RS)... Any Ideas?

Help with a voltage regulator for a DIY bench psu

Hello i have an atx that i would convert into a diy bench power supply but i just realize that it was just 12v and my thing work need more voltage range so i decided to use an old, but still working, Hp 30v ps. so i was looking for a way to regulated it easy, i found the lm2596 and i dont know if it would endure or use lineal regulator such the lm317. so, i need help for any inexpensive alternative or any schematics, or whatever let me step up/down the voltage. Power LED Help

I'm looking to make some home lighting with LEDs, but I'm not sure how to regulate the current properly. I've really only used resistors up until now for led projects. I have a couple ATX pc power supplies, and I've used it to power an ebay led with no problems. I just touched the led directly to the 3.3v line and ground and it lit up fine. What I'm wondering is, is does the psu automatically adjust the current to what you need? Or is there something else I would need to worry about? (I figured it would be okay to power something off the 3.3V line if they were 3.7V leds, say several P4s)

Just to make sure! 30A to charge battery?

Hey! I have an old home alarm system which is broken beyond repair. I just wanted to make sure if it is OK to charge the 12v battery at 2.1 or2.4 Ah with an ATX PSU at 30A? Will the battry just take 2A from it? If not I have the transformer that came with the Alarm, would that be safe to charge with? It's 12v BTW. Thanks. Never can be too careful. Also, I'm using it on a scanner light tube, this will be fine, yes? I have the starter, it is not a problem. It's weird though, when it is lit, you can pull out the ground on the light tube, not the starter and ut still stays lit. Weird. Thanks in advance!

Indoor LED plant lights

I am new to posting in the forums, and actually am not even sure if this is being posted in the right area. My name is Ryan, and I need some help. I have been growing spices/herbs for my own recipes for a couple years, and have always used artificial lights. I use a whole wack of those spiral florescent lights (The 23watt ones to replace a 100watt light bulb), and it works alright. I now want to create a panel of LED's so that I can increase my lumen count, and therefore increase the rate of growth. I need help with how to use resistors to get the power to what a 50 LED panel would need. LED: wattage: 1 watt Forward Voltage : 2.1V~2.3V Forward Current: 300mA. ATX Power Supply: Wattage: 250 Normal 120 volt Canadian power I want to make a panel that has 50 1watt LED's in it, power it from a modified 250watt ATX power supply, and if possible, power more than one from a single PSU (Power Supply Unit) (Something like a quick connector setup, have all resistors panel side, and have cords running to the PSU where it uses quick connectors) I want to use the PSU because I have three at my disposal. I was thinking that it would only need 50 watts or something, and I could wire it in series, however I don't know what resistors to use, or where to use them, to make the power work for the LED's. I can wire thing together, solder, and have a basic understanding of circuitry (Like power flows this direction, and this will do that...... don't know numbers)

Higher efficiency (high amp) 12V regulator alternative to 7812

I need a high efficiency 12V DC regulator to supply my thermoelectric modules (they're very inexpensive so I had no choice but to use them). I found that the modules are most efficient at 12V @ ~7A each. I could use many 7812s in parallel but they are too inefficient and too much energy is lost to heat. Is there any alternative? Electricity bills are going up so it'd be very good if I can find an extremely efficient step-down or step-up regulator, short of using an expensive 'gold standard' ATX PSU (which are usually upwards of 500W so the power savings don't matter).

Hi :DMy old computer has died and I'm planning on just ripping it apart and salvaging bits and bobs for a new build, Here's my plan:CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Desktop Processor E8600Graphics card: GeForce 9800 GX2RAM: 4GBWiFi card: some brand, i haven't researched yetCase: Jeantech JNR-105 Luna ATXMy main problem is i cant decide on which Motherboard... do motherboards come with their own power supply? I think a 500 watt power supply would be more suited than the current 300 watt. which leads me to another question, can people recommend cooling options? (not water cooling though, i dont trust it enough to have hundreds of pounds of hardware surrounded by water)

Which Boost/buck converter? LTC3780 vs LM2577S LM2596S

Hi, brought two boost buck converters to build a bench power supply from a atx psu.  Brought the LM version first as i have read previously that these are quite efficient, then seen the LTC one, so thought i might as well buy that as well.  Looks like the LTC board will be able to go down to lower voltages and appears to have a greater efficiency, quoted up too 98%, compared with the LM's at around 80%. Hard drive MP3 boombox?

I was wondering if anyone has and Instructable or has done this. I've searched Instructables and can't find anything like this at all, which really surprised me as I thought this would have been an obvious one to do. What I'd like to do is build a bookcase / boombox stereo from scratch using: 1. an old hard drive 2. some speakers 3. a small lcd to display info 4. some basic controls 5. usb port to update files on HD -or- make the HD removable 6. whatever other electronics parts are necessary. It doesn't need to have radio, CD audio or anything else. All I want is a 200GB or larger hard drive full of MP3's and a way to play them with decent fidelity and loud without using the computer. I've built lots of PC's and know computer hardware and software fairly well but have never used a soldering iron... but can follow complex instructions very well. Also I'm not sure if it can use a prebuilt interface by scavinging the electronics from a basic el-chepo MP3 player or if it would be better to use something like a VIA Micro-ATX motherboard with built in CPU and have something like a USB drive booting to a simple version of Linux directly to a media player interface? That seems like it would cost more in parts but be simpler than creating custom circuitry. But that is the way I would go if attempting this on my own. An all hardware & firmware solution somehow seems more elegant but that's beyond my current ability's. If I go with the Micro-ATX motherboard and Linux it could be done in a modular format that would allow the addition of other components latter such as CD player (with auto MP3 ripping), input and output to other components etc. So has anyone done this? If you haven't but have the know how do you want to collaborate via e-mail and walk me through it. I'd create an Instructable if so and give you full credit. Any and all suggestions, comments, rants, put downs, cheers, roars, hollars and yells appreciated!!

Newbie needing help please

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and new to making circuits. I've been scrapping them for quite some time and feel terrible about how much goodies I've thrown out in the process :(  anywho, I saved a ton of it, And today I picked up a "Futura 100 color graphics at its finest" box, it has 5 knobs on the front for: Hue, saturation, contrast, black, and white, has a power on led and reset button, floppy drive. in the back it has a 3-25pin connectors (2female and 1male) for printers, a video in and video out, power switch and 3 prong plug, fan, keyboard connector, and a 9-pin male test port?  Inside it had a dark drive and has TONS of ic chips. ill quit blabbering and get on with it, does anyone have any ideas on what this can be turned into? One or multiple projects is fine, as long as this thing gets a good use. I'm hoping to make a variables power with led display for my atx.

Shop made bench power supply.

Hello I have an atx dual sata 550 watt power supply... I have seen a bunch of instructables on here that allow just a few different voltage selections.. I have also seen a few with potentiometers to allow it to be more adjustable (dial up or down the voltage). That is what i want, i dont want to be limited to just three different options. S my question to you is, what type of potentiometer do i need to buy for this? And will a regular autostore purchased dashboard voltage meter window work? Also, what type of fuse/or breaker should i use?. Do i even need one? I also head i need some kind of "switch" for this as well. I found circut diagrams, i found list of items needed, but most of the instructables ihave found arent very specific on the specs of these extra items needed... Any help or direction would greatly help. Im going out to radio shack today and would love to grab the items needed to finish this priject. Thanks all...

Low Voltage Higher Current?

I am having a strange problem on a USB peripheral.... it is a digital radiography sensor that overheats. I believe it may be due to the power supply to the motherboard, but I don't know for sure. I am ASKING FOR YOUR HELP in reasoning out what may be the cause. Anyone with computer/electronics experience, PLEASE HELP!!! I was told that my power supply is too low voltage, and that current is going up in the USB peripheral causing it to heat up. I always thought V=IR means that if voltage drops so does current. But in other places I read that if voltage drops, current goes up so that the wattage/power usage stays the same according to P=VI. So which is it? V=IR or P=VI ? If my power supply has too low voltage, will the current in the device increase to compensate? Or will it just have a lower current? Does it depend on the circuit and the exact electronics in the USB peripheral? Here is my SETUP. It is SIMPLE: Antec AR-350 power supply connected to a motherboard Asus P5N7A-VM in an ATX case. All I have otherwise is a SATA hard drive and a SATA DVD-ROM in there. That's it! Problem started to happen about 1.5 years after I got the computer. That is why I am thinking maybe it is the power supply, or maybe it is the motherboard?  The computer works fine in every other way! It uses Windows XP and has a wireless keyboard/mouse which also works fine. BIOS settings screen Hardware Monitor shows voltage for USB 5v reading about 4.9v, within tolerance. However, one of my USB peripherals is a digital xray sensor. It works ok a few times, then it starts to overheat and fail. This only happens on this computer. When I use another computer (like a laptop) with the same USB hardware it functions ok and never overheats. I don't have any problems on the other computer, even thought I am using the same software/drivers. I bought a different ATX case with a new power supply, and just moved the motherboard, HD and DVD over. Now the motherboard BIOS shows under Hardware Monitor that it is getting 5.2 V instead of 5v, so it is higher! Also the 12 V is higher (around 12.2v) and same for the 3.3V. All the voltages are HIGHER! So I have yet to test this new configuration with the USB peripheral sensor.  Could the motherboard be faulty? I did notice the motherboard looks "curved" with the area under the CPU sort of bulging out. However, with this motherboard you will see there is a huge heat-sink/fan that gets clamped over the CPU and that may be bending the board. Keep in mind the board works perfectly otherwise, so I am wondering WHY it would only affect USB for this one peripheral and not for the keyboard and mouse? Maybe the circuitry on the keyboard/mouse is more tolerant to low voltage? Would appreciate your thoughts please.

Home Electronic Project, Can Use Some Help :)

Hey all I'm trying to hack together a few things to make a uninterrupted power supply unit. So far, I've got a 500W power inverter from 12V to 240V, and a car battery. Unfortunately, I also need a power supply capable of pumping enough amps into the inverter and battery to get the whole thing started. I've tried an old ATX power supply I had lying around (actually several :s and I figured if I can get at least a few amps out of it it'll power ONE computer at least) but as soon as the inverter is connected to the 12V line the power supply shuts down (even when it's not powering anything at all, just the inverter ATM). It's like some sort of safety mechanism, same thing happens if you short two wires across. I know there's nothing wrong with the inverter because I can plug it into a normal wall transformer (which fried as soon as I plugged something into it because the transformer only output 1A ), and it works fine powering a computer on the battery. Anyone know of a way of overriding this mechanism, or even better, a way of hacking together a cheap and nasty 240V -> 12V 50A power transformer? Maybe splicing two power supplies together, if it's possible? 'Shady

(Arduino) automated macro-photography rail

Hi everyone, I would like to build an Arduino automated macro-photography rail (let's call it AAMR). I'm a decent software engineer and I want to learn electronics, so I'm looking for someone telling me I'm going in the right direction... The idea sounds simple, I want to : 1/ place the subject on the AAMR 2/ input the # of pictures needed to perform a "focus stacking" (https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Focus_stacking) 3/ push the start button and make the AAMR loop n times through the following steps : - trigger the camera to take a picture of the subject - move the subject 1 millimetre toward the camera After a couple weeks reading and day-dreaming, here are my thoughts. I need : - to read more :) - a steeper motor and its driver (I own bipolar steppers and L298 / L293 IC) - to trigger the camera (Canon EOS 70d : remote cable is quite easy to make) - a potentiometer and 2* 7segment displays (input and display the # of pictures) - a start button - a reset button to make the rail come back at position Zero - two "end of course" buttons (not sure about the English terminology), just in case the motor wants to jump over the board - power (5v for the arduino and the logic, 12v for the motors) I. Arduino ---------- First things first, I plan to use an Arduino Uno during prototyping and replace it by a home made board in the final product. Uno has 14 Digital I/O Pins and 6 Analog Input Pins : - stepper => 6 Digital pins (3 ?? if using http://www.bristolwatch.com/L298N/L298N_arduino.htm) - 7segment led => 3 Digital pins if using shift registers (https://www.instructables.com/id/Different-methods-of-driving-7-Segment-LED-display/step5/null/) - start button => 1 Digital pin - reset button => 1 Digital pin - "end of course" buttons => 2 Digital pins - camera trigger => 1 Digital pin (to drive an opto isolator / solid state relay) - potentiometer => 1 Analog pin 14 Digital pins ! Uno should do the job, am I right ? (I know I could use Analog pins as Digital ones, but it seems I don't need it...) II. PSU ------- Next interrogation is about power supply : I don't want a battery powered device and my options are scarce : - ATX PSU supplies both 5 and 12v, but Arduino seems to like >5v, so ATX doesn't seem a good choice - home made PSU from an existing wall wart -> voltage divider to get ~7v and ~14v -> 7805/7812 voltage regulator (may need heatsinks and/or little fan) If I do the math : - Arduino : 50ma - Stepper motor : 700mA max - L298 : 70mA (quiescent current) - 2* 7Segment LED (multiplexed) : 2 * 80mA (estimated) - Shift registers IC (SN74HC595N) : 1ma (optional : Hex inverter 74LS04 : ?? mA) Total : around 980mA... Am I doing right ? I have tons of questions left (Hex inverter, filter capacitors, motor noise reduction, solid state relays...), but it's a good start :) Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for your answers ! Incredible Fuel Economy Jump

Okay - so I recently read this article (Article) about this auto club - the hypermilers.My lady friend got sick and I had to take her home - we were a 30 minute highway drive away at the time. At the time, I was driving a 2006 Altima (31/24mpg for the mtx drive train).Applying some of the things mentioned in the aforementioned article, I got a consistent 41.5mpg averaging 50mph and when I parked at home after some city driving and a lot of stop signs - the meter read 40.2mpg! For about 5 minutes on the highway, I was getting 43.4mpg.Impossible you say? Here's a picture off the dash from last night ;) Mind you, this was with an atx gear box! So those EPA estimates should be lower than what I posted above. Now that's damn near Prius territory for the average everyday stop/go driver with a 2.5L engine :PAt no time did I draft anyone or shut off the engine while en route. AND, I didn't take anything out of the car. There's a road kit, some umbrellas and a case of water bottles :PSo does anyone know where I can buy a meter to measure my fuel economy like this? I found Scangauge but the $170 cost comes with a bit of sticker shock :P Like the article said -- it turns into a game always trying to beat your last high score :P

Homemade Electric furnace current question

Good day viewers! I recently found out about the wonders of electric furnaces, cheap to run and no smoke. I went looking around for some designs, there are some nice i'bles about it and I got very exited since my neighbours already start nagging when I strike a match, an electric furnace would be the perfect solution. I decided to go with kanthal wire, its relatively cheap at a few bucks per meter, and it can handle temperatures up to  1300C. I plan to melt alluminium and maybe some brass so I should be fine with that. now to the questions part, I have an ATX PSU with a 12V 16A output (DC), I was wondering how many (centi)meters or inches for the americans under us, it could power (if I can power it it would eventually go up to full temp right?) I am a complete nitwit at these Ohms formulas and electric furnaces, at the moment I am abstaining from sleep to build this furnace and I am sure that others are as well. I hope some nice fellow diyers can help me with it. This could be a dumb questions, maybe I need a wall outlet (230V in my place) or maybe I need some rocket science.
