I've been snobbed by Reddit!

I could not believe that I have been snobbed by a subreddit! I was accused of posting from my "blog" after I posted a few woodworking instructables. Once one of the moderators posted profane language directed towards me. I think it is their loss for not joining the best site in the universe. Shame on them!

Blocking or Banning users

I would like to have a way to block a user, or ban a user from commenting on my instructables.  Currently you can send a patch, subscribe to, or send a private message to a user.  I would like to see a block tool as well. I have had users that started discussion threads on my instructables that become offtopic, or inappropriate.  Flagging the individual comments when they post takes time.  If we could block them, then it would stop the commenting all at once. Instructables could even use this filter as a guide to see what users consistently are being blocked, and use it to ban users who are abusive.

(game) You're banned!

So the object of this game is to ban the person above you for a random reason. I saw this on another forum I was on and thought it would be fun!

China's List of Banned Websites

Here is a nice info-graphic of the websites china's government blocks their population from visiting. I don't know if this is the full list, but these are probably the most important ones. Pretty interesting, We are not banned yet are we ? Its only a matter of time :)

Speights beer

My last name is Speights. I have wanted to get my hands on a twelve pack of Speights beer in a can.  There is some kind of ban on that beer in the US.  Is there anyone out there who can help me?  Can pay, barter, or exchange with you something not illegal.

Ban the posting of Instructables that use of dead animals or parts thereof

As one who respects all life, and who is sickened and repulsed by the "Instructables" which attempt to use dead animals or parts of them as some kind of demented joke, I propose that Instructables.com should ban the posting of articles dealing with or including dead animals or parts thereof. (And before anyone asks... Yes, I've been a vegetarian for 30 years. No, I don't wear leather or fur or other animal parts. No, I'm not a "wuss" - I just feel that the use or exploitation of living things or formerly living things without their consent is immoral.) eBay seems to have survived just fine with their policy of restricting the sale of animal products to a very specific list; I think Instructables should take the moral high-road and institute an outright ban on the use of animals in posts.

Banned Books Week! 9/29 - 10/6!

Did you guys even know this existed? Are you doing anything for it?Quite nerdy of me, I know, but my store has a neat display going on right now and I wanted to share. And it's good to spread the word about events like these, I think! :DSo my friend Seth and I decided to go with Alcatraz... but with books. I think it turned out fairly well considering we tried to use materials we had lying around the store. The whole thing cost less than $20. We wanted to have "Where's Waldo?" escaping on the raft but the book is much too big, so I thought LotF was fitting. :)Oh, and for more information about banned and challenged books, visit these sites!deletecensorship.org - Half Price Books websiteALA website - lots of nice lists and explanations!

I've been banned!

Want to read something really depressing?Something that makes you fear for the future of America?Something that should make you really angry?Have a look at this website, especially their pages on evolution.I have tried to do something about it, but they are wise to me - whether I try from home or school, no matter what fake ID I use, I now get told my IP has been banned from editing the site.Maybe other members would like to have a stab at it?(Update: I'm sorry, I seem to have upset another member by posting this. That was not my intent. It's just there's stuff on that site that is so brain-wrenchingly wrong it renders me speechless. (Me!) )(Anothe update: Now they're re-writing the Bible because it is too liberal - they're getting rid of the forgiving bits, and emphasising the free-market parables...)

Mythbusters! New never before seen clips! (Banned from Discovery)

Hi,Here are a few clips most of you have probably never seen before. They are banned from discovery and never actually aired on tv. They aren't even on the mythbusters site. So here for your enjoyment 2 never before seen Myths. Missing flatus experiments (Lighting Farts, Do pretty Girls Fart :) Just a quick note. There are two versions of mythbusters. One with a British announcer and one with a stupid American announcer> I hate the American announcer. He sounds so stupid. In general British people sound smarter than Americans in my opinion. I think that Americans think British sound smarter because Americans are only exposed to the only the smarter smaller percentage of the British. Why do you think British people sound smarter than Americans and what do you think of this great hidden clips. Thanks

The Kids Are Alright

Via The Sietch BlogIf I asked you if giving up your car and plane travel (permanently) was a sensible solution to global warming, most people of adult age (lets say 20+) would have a hard time doing that. However the next generation, the ones who are really going to be screwed by the ill effects of the global climate crisis see things a little differently."new generation of green teenagers are prepared to support radical measures to help the planet, says a new study.A survey of 16- to 19-year-olds by the Future Foundation found more than one in eight (13%) supported a ban on travelling by air for leisure purposes, while one in 10 say they would back a ban on cars if global warming continues to worsen.Almost 10% even say they would be prepared to take part in guerrilla activities carried out by environmental groups.Meanwhile others - primarily girls - are so eco-conscious they have developed a whole new strand of teen insecurity: "green angst", defined as anxiety about one's eco credentials. Others said environmental awareness even influences their choice of friends and partners. The report was conducted on behalf of the National Lottery to inform funding of environmental projects."It might sound like these kids have lost their minds, supporting guerrilla organizations?! But when you consider the kind of world they are going to inherit it makes perfect sense. If you knew that your parents generation was going to leave you a doomed world, you might be a little pissed. No one wants to grow up to inhabit a mad max movie.According to the study released today by The National Lottery (UK organization), half of 16-19 year olds (50 per cent) want plastic bags banned completely, 71 per cent think that unnecessary packaging on food should go, and 13% per cent want a ban on traveling by plane for leisure purposes. While a quarter (24 per cent) think there should be increases on the taxes and tolls affecting cars, one in ten is prepared to go even further and would support a complete ban on cars if global warming continues to get worse.Read more here.

Regarding brush cleaners spasifically Poly Clens

Recently me and my dad have run across a problem. http://www.100randomtasks.com/_/rsrc/1307405086575/squeaky-clean-boards/Poly%20Clens%20Can.jpg?height=200&width;=200 Apparently our government has banned the use of Poly Clens By Lepage brand here in Ontario Canada as far as I know. Its a favorite brush cleaner for the both of us and we're both surprised when we heard the news not to mention disappointed.  We both don't understand why its banned since there are far worse brush cleaning methods that are way more harmful to the environment. So are there any other alternatives that some one could recommend that are similar? And please don't recommend varsol est since these just don't compare and are just nasty. Thanks. :)

Your Opinions Needed

As you know (or don't know), a while ago I came up with an idea for a place to keep arguments hidden. Some of you agreed, while others did not. I terminated the War Zone after asking Eric about the idea. He said it was best if people just told him who was fighting so he could temporarily ban the offender's account. As of late, I've noticed some fighting around Instructables and I am beginning to have second thoughts about it's termination. Not to go against Eric's wishes, but I feel that banning is only a temporary solution. I think banning could work, but it might also backfire. The offenders could feel that the other got him/her banned, and worsen the grudge. If the War Zone works as planed, I believe the offenders can come to terms without being banned and hopefully stop fighting.I just want your honest opinions on this matter. It would be arrogant of me to believe the rest of the community feels this way. This is the original idea:Welcome to the Hidden War Zone. Here you can settle disputes with other members privately, without disrupting the rest of the community. Every once and a while, two or more members feud with each other. As this site retains a friendly image, other members detest the violence that ensues. Eventually these feuds move from each other's orangeboards into the public forums, dragging other members into the conflict. In order to avoid this, I have created a war zone that is sheltered from the public eye. Think of it as fighting in a barren field as opposed to a populated city. If you're going to fight, at least try to limit the number of civilian casualties. When the dust settles, truces, reparations, and atonements can take place. When you are done, please visit the Peace Forum. You must war either two ways:Chaotically battle in the comments.orKeep differing disputes separated by steps. (ie. Step one: Goodhart vs. Kiteman. Step two, Adrian Monk vs KK, Skate. et al.)If you do add a step, please hit "save and finish later" or "finish later". This will keep the War Zone hidden. If you must fight, do it here.I truly hope this will never be used, but I've made it as a precaution. Send me a PM if you wish to be a collaborator.~Spl1nt3rC3ll

My Public Minecraft Server

Hello everyone, this topic is all about my minecraft server(mostly to get it out there) some rules if you want to join: no swearing(cussing) you cannot kill other players no abusing commands (if opped) no greifing EVER The penalty to doing any of these is first getting kicked, then if you do it again, you get banned.

"positive"

Today was the first time i wanted to comment, but found myself confronted with this: "We have a "be nice" comment policy. Please be positive and constructive with your comments or risk being banned from our site." In my personal opinion, constructive comments are rarely positive and positive comments tend to be rather useless. Who thought the statment quoted above is a good idea and can it be changed?

Knex Chat Room

Hey I think someone started something like this already but I don't know what happened to it or if it is still active so I started my own. It's located Here or there or how about right here?So yeah come here for a quick chat. It will probably be easier than spamming topics with a useless conversation like the ones you could have in the chat. When you get there and you haven't joined Xat yet then click on your name to change it and your avatar. I'm most likely going to need at least 2-3 (depending on how many actually do come regularly) mods. There are a few rules and if you don't follow then then you will be first kicked as a warning and then banned for a day. If you still continue to break rules you'll be perma. banned from the chat.~Rules~-You may curse but only lightly and not at others. It has to stop when/if there is someone who requests it for the duration that they are there.-No fighting. You must respect everyone. If you disrespect an owner or a mod then you will automatically skip from getting a kick to getting banned for the day.-You may talk about other things but I do request you do stay relatively on topic for the most part.-Please remain in the chat while you are online. It helps me and the main reason people who aren't on a chat room are because no one else is. It starts a chain reaction of inactivity.Alright have fun you guys. I like talking to all of you personally so this will sure be fun for me to meet more of my fellow knexers.

Airplane dog carrier

I want some ideas that you may have for a carrier. background: I want to bring my Dog on an airplane but he can't ride in cargo because there is a summer ban on dogs during hot months. I must fly before the end of the ban. The airline will allow a dog in the cabin in a soft carrier, if the dog and carrier are less than 10kg. My dog is 7kg so the carrier can be up to 3kg. It must be 27cm high 40cm wide and 55 cm long or smaller problems: the foot print is fine for my dogs they could lay down comfortably, but the height is small. I want to make a telescoping carrier so it can fit under the seat on the plane, but can open up for comfort in the airport and when moving. Any ideas are welcome and I'll post it as my first instructable once I make it thanks http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/pets.html

What are we allowed to post about?

I am kind of new to this whole instructables web page and i was wondering if i was allowed to post about how to make explosives, fireworks, and things of that nature. Would i be banned from the sight due to the content? what are the resrtictions? I havent seen anything about those kind of topics specifically yet, so im eager to know if its not allowed, or what.

Account Troubles

Hello, I would appreciate if this account is not banned please in advanced. Now, I went to get into instructables the other day, and it gave me a error 500 or something similar and said my account was locked. Why is this? I didn't do anything wrong and I want to have it unlocked as I have pictures on there I need to retrieve, I'm very angry with whoever locked my account and the pictures better still be there.

INSTRUCTABLES MEMBERS PLEASE READ!

Well, firstly, I would like to start by pointing out that people cloning other Instructable Members shouldnt be done as it may affect the real, original member. Secondly, I have seen quite alot of 'Ibles mebers being cloned. --Example: A person called Dj-Radio had cloned the real Dj Radio. Now I really don't know what this person's intentions were, but I believe that he was doing it to make the real member look bad. Recently or previously cloned members: -DJ Radio -I Am Canadian -Jollex -Dutchwarlord -Dsman -Kipkay -Killerk -Mykhailo -If there is someone please tell me and I will add to the list. On one occasion, I saw a comment that had been made by this 'Dj-Radio' person that included very bad language and it was breaking the 'Be Nice' policy. Fortunately the comment was removed by a community request but his account remained active by the looks of things. Now I believe that any form of bad language or innappropriate behaviour on any account should lead to a temporary ban from the website or even a permanent ban if needed. Anyway, Please keep this in mind in the future. Thanks, Hiyadudez.

Message to all whom use the chatroom.

Hi, gmjhowe here, As many of you may know, i am currently a Moderator inside the meebo chatroom we have on this site. Me along with two others maintain order in the chatroom. The current Mods, are Bumpus, and Adrian Monk I chose these two as they are both chatroom regulars, they have meebo accounts, and are in different time zones to me.Now, we have a few problems, but they are easily fixed with these few simple rules.- People using the chatroom should always use their instructables username- The chatroom is still part of instructables, and we go by the same rules, and be nice policy- People will be given two formal warnings before they are banned, we will not just ban people with no warning. In order to prevent 'imposters' were going to use a simple code system.Basically, all the regulars and visitors to the chatroom will get issued a simple 4-digit code (which will be PMed to their account on ibles). The idea being, that when in the chatroom they can IM me the code, to prove they are who they say they are.Think of it like Captcha.I know this isn't ideal, but it will manage fine for now. Thanks for reading, any questions, just ask.- gmjhoweTo get your 4-digit code, contact me via PM or leave a comment below.

Ending SPAM on instructables

It is becoming unbearable and making instructables NSFW.  Every day there are dozens of scantly dressed asian women shown with some cryptic text below.  These are clearly not instructables, and it becomes embarrassing to open the site when others are around. Suggestions:  1) Ban users that post two or more SPAM. 2) Do not allow postings from users that are less than 1 week old (e.g., today there are 6 new SPAMS from a user that joined today). I love instructables, but it has become too annoying to use anymore.  Some measures must be taken.

Knex "K*bot" competitions (kbotworld.com)

Http://www.kbotworld.com/ I was bored and decided to google "Knex". What I found was very interesting. Apparently there are competitions for Knex robots that do battle with each other. As I read this I thought about how us Knex gunners at Instructables could easily dominate these competitions; because we are the kings of Knex warfare. We could have a collaboration group based around K*bots, where we will post ideas and eventually have designs for the ultimate robot. Then when the competitions come around we could find somebody who lives closest to the competition to build the robot and enter on behalf of our collaboration. But there's a catch: There are rules, an one rule states that projectile weapons are banned. But I believe there are ways around this, as the exact ruling on this goes:"Projectile weapon systems which can launch a K'NEX part clear off the K*bot are banned due to safety reasons. Any other weapons systems which the organizers deem too dangerous will also not be permitted." This could easily be avoided by fixing the projectiles to the robot. For example: My cannon could use an extremely long bullet that has rods in the back of it, preventing it from ever leaving the robot while still delivering a deadly impact. But don't forget that weapons NOT based on guns will also be essential. So what do the rest of you think?

Natural alternatives for insecticides?

I know its a bit early but the early bird gets the worm!!! In my area pesticides are banned for use on personal gardens and lawns for about 2 years now. Last year my poor peach tree really didn’t have any edible and or usable peaches on my tree because of infestations of bugs. I was wandering if any of you knowledgeable people could direct me on what kind of natural insecticides I could use in the future for my peach tree?so I can at least have some edible peaches for eats and jam. The squirrels usually take their share too. *darn little buggers!!!* Thanks. :)

I have noticed that some people's recent comments are not their own comments. several unknown members that have not posted any comments at all suddenly have thousands of comments (a member called "erics instructables" supposedly posted 417,000 something comments, and we have not seen his name around). "evil instructables robot" has not posted a single comment the last time i checked, and now he has 27,000 something comments this also means that the posters of the comments dont have them. instructable member "j-chode" has a message saying on his profile that he has not posted any comments at all and he wasnt banned.......... can this problem be fixed?????????????

Playing Games In Session

Think students playing games on their laptops during class is bad? What about parliament members playing games during government policy sessions? The parliament of Bhutan, a small country in the Himalayas, has decided to ban laptops so that lawmakers will stop playing computer games while the Bhutanese parliament is in session. It is not however true that we were always playing games, said the MP, who is from the governing Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT). We need the laptops because that saves us the trouble of having to carry huge amounts of paper and documents. He makes a good point: playing game after game of tic-tac-toe does require a huge amount of paper. What games do you think they were playing?

Poll Question: Do you think health and safety has gone crazy?

I know that on Instructables we do some fairly dangerous stuff with all the potato guns and weaponry. This 30 years ago was perfectly acceptable, but in the modern society health and safety makes you wear goggles and be safe. The fact is you can do practically nothing in an open environment without being told to be safer. I brought up this topic when i heard that one school had banned all pencil cases as well... It might contain sharp objects-like pencils! So what do you think, is all the politics making health and safety a bit over the top or is it just there to protect us?

Video bombing. Stop...it...now...

Unless i constrain myself this will sound like one of Gordon Ramsays shows... ;-) Fu blo he. It's fung time to do something about those bloo videos that stu people are carpet bombing Instructables with. ! Please limit the possibility of posting an unlimited amount of instructables/slideshows/videos per 24 hour period. One (1) per 24 hours are quite enough for anyone that are actually doing something good and not just carpet bombing/spamming crappy videos from Metacafe to get some money. As a temporary solution maybe just banning Metacafe-videos would help remove those obnoxious spammers. Or can you also get payed by videos on Youtube/Google? Talking in friendly manner to these guys doesn't really help. It only fixes (possibly) the problem with one guy, but there will just come more and more of them all the time. (The image of Gordon is stolen from telegraph.co.uk - sorry about that...)

Chatroom abuse

The Chatroom can be easily abused. The 'Warning" system does not have any requirements, which means that anyone can warn someone for no particular reason. Each time a person is warned more than 4 times in a row, that person is muted for a specific amount of time. Each 4 more warnings is punished by 5 minutes of being muted. Meaning that if someone is warned 8 times, that person will be muted for 10 minutes. Some persons are abusing this system and warning people for no reason. Yesterday, I was warned 32 times. Mostly it wasLittlechef37Okoshima.Linuxh4xor (3 times, as part of the fun. Still, you jerk)The consequence of their joking, was that I was muted over 5 times.....almost 25 minutes (not in a row though)This kind of people simply ruin the experience.I know the chatroom has nothing to do with instructables, just meebo. But because of those jerks, the 32 warnings will now follow me forever (the chatroom tracks your IP adress) and if I am warned in the future, the punishes will be more severe. (Permanent banning from the chatroom is actually possible if a member is warned too much)

On Hiatus...

HI all! I find myself in a very serious time crunch at the moment. I have several high priority projects at work that I absolutely need to finish up, plus I may not even have a job a month from now (which would be a Very Bad Thing, since I'm here on a work visa...)All in all - I can't really afford this horribly enjoyable time sink which is Instructables. I'll be going "Cold Turkey" for a while, and see if can straighten out the mess I'm in right now. Nose to the grindstone and all that.So - don't worry, I'll be back - but it might take a while...Behave yourselves!PatrikPS: If you ever find yourself wanting some help to resist temptation, I have found these tricks from LifeHacker useful in the past:Geek to Live: Ban time-wasting web sitesIf you're curious, I'll be using Method #2 - redirecting to 127.0.0.1 . Naturally, I cannot recommend you do this with instructables.com, but maybe it'll come in handy for you in blocking some other websites. ;-)Deliver us from temptation, oh IP redirection...

HSE says "there is too much HSE"

The British Health and Safety Executive has published a list of bizarre decisions justified on the grounds of "Health and Safety". Far too many "party pooper decisions" are justified by statements along the lines of "it's not us, it's Health and Safety", when, in reality, the HSE had nothing to do with it, and it is purely cowardice on the part of officials trying to avoid responsibility should things go wrong, and (even more) shielding themselves from vultures in suits lawyers in the modern litigious culture. It's not on the most recent list, but my "favourite" activity banned on spurious grounds of Health and Safety was conkers in school... From the BBC: One health and safety expert said the law required people to approach risks in a balanced and proportionate manner. "Overzealousness about trivial risks gives health and safety a bad name but there are actually many more cases where people are under-hitting," said Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Good health and safety practice was all about "exercising judgement", he added. "People in authority such as councillors and managers need to be much more 'risk literate' or 'risk intelligent'. And third partiers such as clients, funders or insurers need to avoid requiring people to do things in the name of 'elf 'n' safety' which are not actually required by the law."

Meat Free Mondays

San Francisco joins communities across the world in observing Meat-Free Mondays.  Too bad no one told us. Apparently back in April the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation declaring the first day of the week meat-free Mondays, now known as Vegetarian Day or Veg Day. Supposedly, the legislation urges “all restaurants, grocery stores and schools to offer a greater variety of plant-based options to improve the health of San Francisco residents and visitors and to increase the awareness of the impact a green diet would be on our planet.” Consider awareness. . . unaffected. This seems like something that would be plastered all over San Francisco buses, sign posts, and veg-friendly shops.  Did I miss the flier at the co-op?  Probably.  Nonetheless, just as banning plastic bags took hold (uh, sort of), I'm sure the wave of Meat-Free Monday observers is sure to swell and sweep the city by storm.  I'll let you know when the falafel shop steals all the Monday business from the burger shop downstairs.  Actually. . .  it's the same shop.  So maybe they are onto something after all. via: the sf examiner

Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened.

I just spent the last 2 days authoring a new Instructable and struggling, as always, with the abominable editor on this site. This time I did as much as possible in a text editor, including using HTML tags for images uploaded to my account, and for bold fonts, and anchor links with text. I selected the mandatory cover image, which was all cut off BTW, entered keywords, and hit Publish both times and the second time I got the obnoxious: "Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened." To say this is frustrating would be like saying that a sharp stick in the eye was a little annoying. So what's going on this time? Is it the HTML tags which the preview shows as working flawlessly? Are any of these tags banned? If so, why doesn't the message just say so instead of kicking me in the n…, u-h-h, face without offering any help? I couldn't find anyone to contact either, hence this post. Firefox 33.0.2, OS X 10.8.5, javascript enabled And no it doesn't work any better in Safari.
