What are some good Barn/workshop options?

I'm looking at getting more property and I'd like to add a large workshop (aka barn)  I do work with computers, electronics and wood working so I'd like to have space and facility for all. This won't be an animal shelter (though dogs may hang out with me) I'm looking for opinions and hopefully an unexpected suggestion.

Retrofitting an Old, Rundown Barn Into an Awesome Work/Storage Space

Hey guys. My family just began work on a farm we bought two years ago, and soon I'll move into a new house there. The property has a huge barn (not an animal barn) that served as the central building for an old cowboy camp and a vacation home. It's cool to me because it was built by one man over sixty years ago using power line posts, some lumber, and good, old-fashioned DIY ingenuity. It's survived several floods from the river that flows only a hundred yards from it and building code since. Now, though, it doesn't serve much purpose other than sheltering a tractor built 63 years ago and providing a home for mice and birds. The place is also full of the previous owner's junk that's strewn about. As the work continues, I hope to bring the building back into glory as a very useful workshop to build many great projects that I never could inside my family's one-car garage. Storage is also an extreme necessity in the barn, and I'll need lots of it in a minimal amount of space. I plan on using my workshop for metalwork, electronics, woodworking, and mechanics. What is yours used for? What kind of solutions have you made in your work spaces and storage areas? What is interesting about them? Please comment; I'm sure we'd all like to hear your stories. -Update: The barn now has a new roof and concrete floor.

I would like to build a simple toy barn and stable for my 4-year old's toy horses. Tools and budget are limited.

All of the plans I find onlline are expensive and complicated, and IJ don't have a band saw or router. I just want to build a simple, open-roof barn and stable, maybe a small table as well, for my little one's toy horses. I have a drill and hand tools, and some woodworking talent. Any ideas?

Antique megawatt meter (Westinghouse). Anybody ever seen anything like this?

Picked up this barn-find in Cleveland, OH recently. I've tried finding any info on it to no avail. I found it near some massive (equally aged) Babcock & Wilcox pressure meters, so I'm thinking it came from a steam-powered electric plant. I'd love to find a picture of it or if anybody knows anything (or anyone who might know) please pass it along!

I need to know how to wire a 3 phase motor to put out three phase current by running it off a single phase motor .?

I used to run three phase machines by wiring a separate three phase motor to the machine motor while spinning the motor with a single phase motor I know this sounds strange but when you can't get three phase to your shop need to improvise. This was common in country side barns in my neck of the woods back in the 70's. Thanks Nick

Doors and WIndows Automation

The windows are fairly old and made of wrought Iron. I am wondering if somebody can advise and help me selecting the motor (based on torque) and the appropriate diameter of the Lead screw for this instance.  The idea being that when the lead screw rotates, the ball nut flange moves left or right and pushes the connecting rod out or in thus opening or closing the window I have attached a rough sketch what I had in mind and please pardon me for any mistakes. Many Thanks Ash

water level sensor syphon control

I am trying to design an automatic watering system for a chick brooder at the ranch.  We are off-grid, so don't have electric.  The brooder is in a room in the barn beside a water tank.  I want to set up a siphon system to get water from the stock tank to fill the water tanks in the brooder--but need to have some way to turn on and off the water automatically.  I've seen the water sensors and no water sensors, and think those might be a start--use the no-water sensor to trigger the flow of water, and the water sensor to turn it off--but I'm not sure how to rig up a siphon that can be turned on and off, and not sure how to wire the whole thing together.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Ever Saved a Motorcycle from the Scrap Heap?

I come across old unloved bikes alot. Somebody got all excited and bought a real beauty. After a couple of years, the newness wore off, and the old bike spent 20 years in the barn rusting away. Lots of times these old 2wheelers can be had for the asking, or at least for scrapyard prices. I love to save these old bikes from certain destruction at the hands of weather/recyclers/inexperienced tinkerers. I'm working on an ible about salvaging these old machines. Anybody else out there ever saved a classic/junker from the elements (or even worse, the crusher)? Any tricks you know for bringing one of these would-be stallions back to life?

what would it take to make a co2 laser from scratch?

I think I have the basic concept, you take a full mirror and a one sided mirror, put them between a tube, pump in 10% co2 gas 5% argon or something inert, charge it with a neon transformer and a few welder's sticks for the anode and cathode respectively, then most of what comes out the one sided mirror should be laser emissions. I know I'm missing something though... any suggestions? I'm not worried about refining the beam into something that could: cut metal, make holes, be a nuisance to my neighbors, I just want a multi-watt laser in my barn that I could use to start my wood stove at the press of a comically big button.

Prop Building Guidebook

I have a new book out that should be of interest to prop makers, cosplayers, and anyone else interested in learning more about this type of fabrication. The Prop Building Guidebook covers materials and methods such as carpentry, metal work and welding, plastics, molding and casting, sculpting, fabric and sewing, painting and more, along with safety procedures, shop setup, planning and budgeting. At 383 pages, with over 575 color photographs and illustrations, it is the most comprehensive guide to prop building ever published, and it does so using professionally-produced props from well-known films and theatre productions. Nonetheless, it presents techniques usable for all skill levels and budgets. The book's webpage, http://www.propbuildingguidebook.com, has information on where you can buy it (you can get it online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most other major online retailers). The website also has how-to videos and bonus chapters, all of which is free to view and read even if you do not buy the book.

I Got a Vacuum Pump

I recently obtained a Vacuum pump from the school (they got it from like a barn or something where it was sitting for like 10 years, so it needed a lot of cleaning, lot of dirt). I'm not sure how strong it is, but it is powered by a 1/2 HP motor (the same motor that I got earlier, I'm just now using the Vacuum pump) and uses pullies to make the torque more around 2HP. Couple of Questions: -It works (I'm not sure how well, if you put your hand over the output and give the pulley a 1/4 rotation turn it generates a noticeable amount of sunction (and sounds like an opening bottle of wine when you take your hand off). -What usually goes bad with old pumps, can I prevent it? -I should probably change the oil, is there a cheap local way of getting some (like some sort of auto oil?) -Do you think there's enough suction to create a vacuum tube. (doesn't have to be precision made, it's for Tesla Coils, think large Vacuum Tubes)

Light sensitive/remote pet door battery powered

Hi all i have scoured the site but cant seem to find a project that i need, and would therefore benefit from any help and advice on how to build an light sensitive automatic door opener for our chicken coop. it seems an obvious project to me,, hopefully one not too hard that i can do with your help. we have a barn thats too far away from the electricity, so it needs to be self powered by battery. i can look into trickle carging the battery by solar seperatley i am sure on the site. but, the wife is sick of having to go each night and shut the chucks in to keep them safe from the fox, and then open up every morning. we were wondering if we could use a standard light sensor you find on the cheap security lights at the DIY store, that would trigger some kind of motor or catch etc to slide or raise a door. then if possible, to do the opposite when the morning comes. if the LUX sensor is not possible, then maybe on a timer, or even posibly remote. i need help and advice on the whole thing, as i have no idea on what type of mote, (if i need a motor at all) i need, will it burn out if it has power all the time?, how to stop it? loads of questions i cant even think of support with your answer would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Pig farmer proves that great ideas can come from anywhere

Here's a story with a great moral to it. If you're observant, then you can come up with a brilliant solution to a problem. And it doesn't matter if you went to a fancy design school for it or just need to solve a problem. Canadian pig farmer Mary Haugh had a problem; multiple heart attacks put her husband out of commission, and she alone had to somehow control and herd their 3,000 hogs through the barn. Traditional methods of getting pigs to move are to use a stick, an electric prod or a "chase board," a length of wood the farmer wields horizontally to angle the pigs in a particular direction.Haugh then came up with a roller that dispenses a swath of red cloth--a sort of farm version of the retractable "lane guides" that movie theaters use. Working with her brother Peter Jones, a mechanical engineer, she developed a 30-pound stainless steel prototype that retracted fabric like a windowshade and could unspool 50 feet of material. The pair also designed it so one end could attach to existing stabling, enabling one-person operation. The resulting product rolls up neatly, can easily be carried and deployed by one person, and meets Canadian standards for biosecurity as it can be washed with the pressure washers most farmers already own to clean other equipment. More importantly, it works far better than anything that came before it--testing trials reveal it saves 70% of the time needed to herd hogs, which translates to hours per week. link

New Group : Scooter Trash - For all of you Bikers, Bikies, Motorcyclists, 1%ers, Citizens and Independants

I've started a new group dedicated to motorcycles and the lifestyle that goes with them. Scooters, Mopeds, Trikes, Sportbikes, Choppers, Bobbers, Cruisers, Tourers: They all count. Feel free to join if you have something to add, or if you're interested in bikes. To me, motorcycles represent freedom. Freedom to go. Freedom to be. Freedom from convention. Freedom to live. Freedom to ride. When you're on a bike with the breeze in your face, bugs in your teeth, and wind in your hair, nothing else matters. Bills, ills, drought, loss, death, strain, stress: all gone while that engine is pounding, and those wheels are rolling. My parents treated them as if they were evil, and I agreed, FOR A WHILE. When I was 17, while they were out of town on vacation, I bought my first bike. It was a beat up 20 year old Harley. It almost never ran, (so Mom and Dad calmed down) but it started a permanent love-affair with cycles. I've owned nearly 50 bikes over the last 20 years, and still own 11 of them. Note: I just went over the list, and I've owned 41 complete bikes, and 17 parts/project bikes, not to mention a barn full of miscellaneous spare parts. So tell me, What do you ride? What do you want to ride? Why do you ride? How long have you been riding? Good/Bad experiences?

Remote switch for battery powered LED

Hi. Firstly, I'm a software man, never done an electronics project but I own a multimeter and can use a soldering iron.  So here's the problem: for my son's wedding in May (that's him in the pic), he's rented an ancient barn with a beautiful timber roof going up to 5 metres. They want to decorate it with coloured paper lanterns, hanging on invisible fishing line. I suggested lighting each lantern with cheap battery operated 10 LED strings. Problem is how to turn them on/off from ground level, say 4 metres away. So I'm thinking infrared triggered switches. There's going to be about 30 lanterns so the receivers must be cheap on components. Here's a possible example of the LED's http://mobile.festive-lights.com/battery-lights/10-warm-white-led-indoor-battery-fairy-lights-clear-cable.html   Voltage can be 3 or 4.5v DC depending if 2 or 3 battery model is chosen. I don't know the current of the LED strings, I'm thinking I'll need to insert the receiver switch inbetween the battery pack and the LED load. Hopefully the receiver won't drain the batteries too much in "standby" as we might need to rig the lanterns 4-5 days before the wedding and it's not practical to get up to the lights again. So, long explanation... I've seen a couple of projects on this site which look nearly right but my knowledge isn't enough to make adjustments. Can anyone give me a solution from which I can build a prototype? I'm hoping I can use an old TV remote as the transmitter. Thanks in advance for your help

Esquire's e-Ink cover

A friend writes:If anyone is interested in hacking the E-Ink version of the October issue of Esquire, here's some info. First, it's not available everywhere, but just in major stores like Borders and Barnes & Nobel. I got one at the Emeryville Borders. They have a display rack full of them. After removing the paper, tape, printed plastic and foam padding, here's what's left: (see pic)The PCB has 6 (!) 3V lithium batteries. It looks like one poweres the control electronics and the other five give 15 volts to run the displays. There's a PIC12F629 and some pads for in-circuit programming. There's also a couple of 4094 8 bit shift registers. There are two E-Ink display panels, but they're not general-purpose dot matrix. They have a small number of pre-patterned regions that can be made black or white. If you disconnect a panel from the circuit, the panel remains in its last state. It might be possible to open up a panel and put a different pattern underneath it (say, with a PCB). Might be fun.The PCB could be useful even without the E-Ink displays. You could connect a bunch of LEDs to it and reprogram the PIC. Not bad for $5.99 plus tax.I did later tear open one of the two display panels. You can remove the aluminum backing to reveal the connections printed in cunductive paint on the back of a pattern in conductive plastic. Trying to peel the conductive plastic away from the E-Ink active layer destroys the display, and releasing a tiny amount of E-Ink dust.It does look like one could cut the display into small pieces to possibly make small separate indicators. You'd need to retain the edge that connects to the clear conductive plastic on the front of the display.

Need schematic: 60-LED analog seconds-only clock

I built a "barn-door" tracker to take photos of planets and stars so that they are tracked (i.e they appear as dots, not trails). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_door_tracker if you want more info about  trackers of this type. My tracker can be seen in the first two photos here: http://www.tjimaging.com/ted/astro.htm These devices depend upon the user manually turning a knob at exactly one rpm for as many as fifteen minutes. This is (very) tedious, but gets good results. The biggest difficulty is in keeping the proper rate of knob-turning. I use a stopwatch timer and have a pointer on the knob so I can manually match each second as it goes by. This has to be done in the *dark*, though, for obvious reasons! So there's an additional problem of lighting the dial and stopwatch. My idea would be to affix a steady red LED to the end of the knob pointer and to use an analog clock consisting of 60 red LEDs arranged in a circle around the knob. Only one LED would be lit at a time, starting at 12 o'clock position, and advancing one LED at a time, clockwise, and keeping each LED lit for one second. This arrangement would let me simply match the knob's steady LED with the currently-lit one and thus makes manual matching of the "second hand" visually easy. I expect a 555 timer circuit (powered by battery, not A/C, for portability) could handle this task, but I don't know enough about electronics to know for sure. I'd like to keep the cost lower than it would be if an Arduino-based circuit were used. I've also never made a custom printed circuit board, but I'm game to try after building a successful breadboard. I just need a schematic!  Thanks, all.

Lowney's Tempest Review

Well this is Lowney's Rifle that he posted yesterday, and I built it and with his permission I have reviewed it! So, here it goes: Normally, if you wanted an excellent oodammo single shot, you were left with a choice of two: The original KillerK pistol and Oodalumps' rectangle.  Now however, there is the tempest. It boasts something that only it has ever had in the world of k'nex: a rifled barrel attachment.  So let's get on with the specs: Use Firing Interval 8/10 this is based on the fact it is a single shot though. Five seconds is what I average. Bullet Lock 9/10 The bullet has never fallen out for me, but it doesn't feel quite the same as a ball joint Rifle Attachment 9/10 Works very well, but it's not a 10 because it can only do oodammo and velcrammo Smoothbore mode 6/10 Brilliant for any ammo that is shorter than a yellow rod but otherwise not so good Handle 8/10 It's a very very nice handle, second only to the ZKAR and MEZAK Trigger 9/10 Has yet to fail for me, but the movement is quite slight Reliability 10/10 Never failed: single shots rarely do Robustness 10/10 I test robustness by standing on a garden chair and drop in on concrete. It didn't break Other Aesthetics 4/10 the rifled barrel is ugly, but smoothbore mode this gun would be a 9/10 Innovation 9/10 the concept is so simple, yet it works like an absolute charm! Very innovative Range/accuracy 10/10 it shoots 160ft approx. and 80ft with cannon ammo without the rifle Power 10/10 again, this gun is mighty powerful, more powerful than the KillerK gun Pain factor 10/10 don't shoot yourself with cannon ammo, it will draw blood. Metallic or Old? I think comparing mine and Lowney's, old colors look better Weight Balance 7/10 The whole gun is so light there is no need to worry about the balance Totals Use: 86.25% Other: 71.42% Grand Total an impressive average score of 8/10 (1dp) which means I rated this gun 4* and would recommend it to anyone.     -Jesse Barns AKA The One And Only

For Sale-- Long Range Wireless Networking Equipment --- New and Used

I worked with a local business for 2 years helping to set up and maintain a long range wireless network system to provide DSL internet to rural people. It reached over 75 miles from end to end with several offshoot branches. The owner applied for an extension on a Small Business Incubator loan that had come due and for some reason they said no. They called in the loan and he shut everything down because he didn't have the cash to cover it. Anyway, 2 years later and the dust and lawsuits have settled and my former boss has asked me to sell off all the salvaged and new equipment for whatever I can get for it. Much of it is going to be going on E bay. But before I start with that I thought I would give the instructables community a first chance at it. I do not yet have a full list of the equipment, some is still out in the field yet to be recovered, and the rest is on its way to me from our former building to sort and evaluate. If you are interested please leave a comment and or send me a message. Some of the new radios will sell for a fair amount, although not as much as if you bought it from the manufacturer. Some of the well used but functional stuff will sell pretty cheap. What is included : Our radios have a reliable range of 25 miles, with directional antennas. The picture is the mast on my house. Some radios are 2.4 MHz and some are 5.8.    The 2.4 which is the standard frequency used for normal wireless served as client radios. The 5.8 ones we used for long reaches to connect the backbone. They can act as bridges in a network or as access points. All have built in router functions. It takes 2, one to send and one to receive to make a network bridge. What can you use them for? They can link up buildings across cities or towns or anything that is in line of sight. We set up an Omni from the internet source and then tasked the surrounding radios to it. One central omni radio can connect with 200 or more clients. The local  school district uses this same technology to link all their buildings together. With just a couple of them you can link your house to your friends house miles away, and have a local LAN with them. They would work for extending LAN game play. You can link your house to your barn or shop or whatever and share your internet  through a router. There are lots of possibilities. We have the radios, the antennas, the cabling, even antenna sections, but I don't know if those can ship UPS. We have it all and its all going to go, which is sad to me but good for you. Possibly the biggest plus is that I will provide you with some tech support to get it up and running if you decide to get anything. I can also pre program the radios here so they are matched and set to link up for you once installed. So, let me know if this is of interest to any of you. I believe the shipment of these radios is limited to the US and Canada but I can check into that if you are from outside those areas.

Distribution of Solar Heated Water and Any Other Heated or Cooled Water

I started this project about a week ago after seeing the Instructable – https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-build-a-strikeheliostatstrike-paraboliI made mine out of cardboard and then coated the cardboard – front and back – with fiberglass resin for stiffness. I covered the inside with tinfoil to test it out and find the focal point. It worked great with the focal point at the center of the dish even with the lip of the curve. I then removed the tinfoil and replaced the tinfoil with mirrored Plexiglas. Now it works awesome. I have a 30 parabolic mirror that can ignite wood almost instantaneously at the focal point of the light.Next I constructed the heating coil to run water through. This is made from a large 1 Kg coffee can, 16’ of ¼ copper tubing with end fittings, and the glass lid of a small sauce pan (handle removed). The outside of the coffee can is painted flat black as is the copper pipe. The copper pipe is coiled to a coil 4 in diameter and 6 in length and inserted inside the can with the ends extending from the side of the can through two drilled holes. The inside of the can is not painted, but left shiny. The glass lid is then taped over the hole with aluminum metal tape covering a minimum amount of the glass – about 1/4 around the edge. The coffee can is then suspended over the mouth of the parabolic mirror by a three point 6 chimney pipe stand-off. The can’s mouth is centered at the focal point of the mirror so all of the light being reflected by the mirror must enter the coffee can. Hoses are hooked up to the copper pipe fittings and these lines go to the feed/storage tank. The problem with the conventional set up from here is that the speed the water moves at (slow) to be heated to a great degree causes such great loses through convection, this system is not really feasible. I propose a new idea – or a new twist on an old idea.I noticed that the solar heat generating station use a black water pipe inside a glass vacuum tube to generate heat from the sun for heating water. I said to myself that this is a great idea and plan on building the next heating coil in a vacuum chamber. But, I also came up with the idea that the if the water is heated in this manner, why can’t it be transferred to the storage tank in a similar manner. If the feed lines were suspended inside a larger outer line and the outer line sealed tight and vacuumed the heat transfer due to convection would be almost nil. I estimated that with a total convective area at 100% the use of plastic stand-offs (8 @1/8 thick over 12’) the convective area would be reduced to 0.6%. Unbelievable! Even if this rose to 5% it is far beyond anything in use today by the home owner. Stretches of pipe going 100s of meters would no longer be un-heard of. You could place the dish in a close by field away from the trees and house and pump the heat back without losing it to the ground. This would also work for outdoor wood furnaces if use today. An outer pipe could be added over the existing pipe work, sealed, and vacuumed – almost all heat lose would be gone. And much larger stretches of pipe could be used here also. They would no longer need one furnace for the barn and another for the house. With this system, the pipes could even be run above ground, if desired, in some cases. This could also be used to replace insulation on cooling lines also. The key to the system is minimal contact between the inside and outside lines, and the vacuum between the two lines. Remember, there is no transfer of heat through convention within a vacuum, because there is no air for the heat to transfer through. As with all the new ideas this could get costly depending on the scale of piping you are dealing with – but the savings from reduced heat lose will far out way these cost in the near future.I may get an Instructable out for the Energy efficiency contest, but will be hard pressed.
