I got TWO books!!!!

Ok, so, it was a pretty lame day at work, what with the apogee server crashing, and me being the only one to sort it. There was three upsides to my day, Firstly, my colleague gave me a cool pair of 3D glasses! (which is good, cos now i can see everything in 3D!) Secondly, my local burger king opened again, and i had an extra large bacon double cheeseburger! Thirdly, my book came, along with, MY OTHER BOOK! I knew that i had got into the book twice, which is great! but i only expected one copy of the book! Alas, i am now the proud owner of two copies of the book! So, i have to ask, does this mean i get two patches? did anyone else get into the book more than once, and received two copies? am i one of a kind? - gmjhowe

good electronic books for beginner

Hi there, Ive done a search on here but couldnt find a relevant post that recommends electronics for beginner type books. Does anyone have any reccs? Im not a noob to maths or programming and i did physics a-level that covered the basics of electricals but never actually done anything practical. Ive amazoned and found two books that seem to have great reviews and they are: Practical Electronics for Inventors by Paul Scherz and Title is Starting Electronics by Keith Brindley They seem good but from what i can tell they are only reference type books and dont have projects to help practice the knowledge. any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Things to make with old school books?

I have a bunch of old school books just lying around. I really want to make something with them but every time I try to come up with some ideas my mind comes to a blank. Any ideas? I'm looking for something that will be useful to me, like an organiser or a pencil case, but I'm not sure how.

Minecraft Strategies Book Author Copies

I was cleaning out my Inbox a few minutes ago and came across an exchange from June of last year saying one of my Instructables was to be included in the Ultimate Unofficial Guide to Minecraft Strategies and asking what name I wanted to appear in the book. I replied and got confirmation of my choice but I haven't heard anything since. I recently received my Author copy for How to Fix Absolutely Anything which made me wonder if that was being done for this Minecraft book too. It was published more recently so maybe I'm just jumping the gun but I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed the boat on this. If free author copies aren't going to be a thing in the future or for every book is it at least possible to find out which books contain your Instructables?

Favorite 20th Century Author

I'm not sure how many people out there enjoy reading but I sure do.  I'm also always curious as to what kind of books other people enjoy.  So I'm going to be you all what is your favorite 20th century author and book. This does not mean an author born in the 20th century, but rather one that has published a book in said century. If any of you are wondering what mine are then I'd say my favorite author is John Stienbeck, and my favorite book would be Brave New World By Aldous Huxley.

Read with your Kids

Hey this is Brett. I have something that's extremely important for you to know. You need to READ with your KIDS! You need to do it regularly! You need to do it at the same time each day! It's been proven that kids who are read to by a parent can read better, earlier! In this day and age far too many kids are dropped off at a daycare and plopped in front of a TV set. I remember the good old days, growing up on the farm. As a four year old I remember settling down with Mom in front of our wood-burning stove. I would stare at the dancing flames as Mom would read "Dick and Jane" to me. The older children would do something constructive like a jigsaw puzzle or draw pictures at the kitchen table. Dad would sit off to one side of the room and carve us some small animal figures out of walnut. Thinking back to those days really brings back those feelings of warmth and security. It tears my heart out to think about my grandchildren and what they might have to look back on. Instead of the glow of a cheery fire and the safety of Mom's lap. They might look back and only remember the cold glow of the computer screen and the uncaring embrace of a beanbag chair. Once again, Please. Please read to your children. This really works! Books on tape just don't cut it. I read to my own children every night from the books they picked out. They've grown up now and are starting their own families. I hope that they'll think back to their nights with Dad and pass on this tradition of reading to their kids. Thanks, Brett.

Covering hardcover books

I've been trying to find out what I can do to make my favorite set of hardcover books match my new collector's edition that is leather bound. Apparently I have to know how to bind a book. does anyone know how to make a leather cover to go on the existing hardcover so that I don't have to tear the book apart and sew it back together page by page?!!! Perhaps there is some sort of new-fangled self-adhesive leather on the market? Anyways. Whats an easy way to make a hardcover book look like it is leather bound?

Has anyone read any Russian books?

Well, I'm doing a Geography project on World Literature and number of author from each country that are included in Major 100 Best Books Lists and something similar. The question is: have you read any books by Russian authors (this includes non-fiction too, just because I'm curious...)? Thanks PS: Will anyone get something other than Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov? Write these anyway, please...

Banned Books Week! 9/29 - 10/6!

Did you guys even know this existed? Are you doing anything for it?Quite nerdy of me, I know, but my store has a neat display going on right now and I wanted to share. And it's good to spread the word about events like these, I think! :DSo my friend Seth and I decided to go with Alcatraz... but with books. I think it turned out fairly well considering we tried to use materials we had lying around the store. The whole thing cost less than $20. We wanted to have "Where's Waldo?" escaping on the raft but the book is much too big, so I thought LotF was fitting. :)Oh, and for more information about banned and challenged books, visit these sites!deletecensorship.org - Half Price Books websiteALA website - lots of nice lists and explanations!

Circuitry (Electronics) Help/Books

I am looking to expand my electronics knowledge. I already know the basics (and a bit more), so please no suggestions for the basics. I know enough to build my own basic custom circuits. I am very knowledgeable about the Arduino (I use it practically every-day). I know how to use resistors, capacitors, transistors, most diodes (LED, Photo-resistor, current-blocking, one way, zener, etc.), and much more. I am self-taught, but want to further my education. I am VERY interested in robotics (I plan to work in aerospace engineering when I'm older), if that helps any. I am in need of good books to read on. I've gone through most of the projects in Forrest M Mim's books that I got in a kit from radioshack. I really would prefer some eBooks, though. Free is good, but I'll pay if it is necessary. Thanks! (:

Coming Soon: EVERY Instructable, one massive book

[edit: this isn't real, but it would be awesome] In the interest of helping out our amazing community of authors, we’ve decided to make all of Instructables available for download in a single PDF document. That way when the EMPs hit or the grid goes down, you’ll have all the chicken rearing, solar paneling, rain barreling, wind turbining, and urban farming resources you’ll need. And because we’re including everything, you’ll also be able to stave off the post-apocalypse blues with bacon roses and unicorn poop. We’re putting all 127,000 Instructables projects into a single omnibus edition that will be sold at cost (TBD) to Instructables authors and for about $1000 for non-members. We’ll also make the PDF available to Pro members. If you’re so inclined, you can print and bind your own version. Get familiar with KaptinScarlet’s “How to Bind Your Own Hardcover Book” Instructable. We found a spectacular publisher who’s willing to bind the pages with paracord and baling wire. This edition should have just about 30 meters of paracord in the binding, along with just enough baling wire to keep the whole thing together if you choose to take out the paracord. The publisher also agreed to include a metal shank in the spine that can be fashioned into a makeshift knife, shovel, or bottle opener. The book is big enough to make a pretty nice counterweight for a small trebuchet, too. There were a few challenges for this publication. First of all, there’s an awful lot of content. To keep the print length down, we used small images wherever possible. We also cut the comment sections and individual project tables of contents. We did, however, keep the advertisements in the margins just in case AdSense will pay out during the End of Days. This publisher did balk at including packages of strike-anywhere matches in the book jacket. Sorry everybody. Matches were deemed “too unsafe” for their production and distribution teams. As though a conflagration of Amazon packages in the back of a UPS truck is less safe than losing a few digits to a frozen post-apocalyptic hellscape. The biggest challenge of all, though, was the sheer size of the book itself. The rough draft weighed in at about 500 kilograms. In a lucky break, using that ultra-thin biblical/lexicographer paper stock allowed us to cut the weight to just 220kg AND to make the pages double as bathroom tissue in a Charmin-less world. The tome will require a licensed forklift operator to receive it (or you can choose to pay the $150 white glove installation surcharge.) And, as usual, we cannot ship to a PO box.

Best way to learn JAVA?

I already know a very small smidge(really not enough to say "know". More like I can read a Java program's source, and understand the difference between the methods, the classes, etc. and how they are used.)However, I don't know enough to write my own. I have a couple of books(Java for Dummies, and Sams Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours), but they haven't really been much help to this point. Does anyone else know of a good book for learning Java?

LED Lights and Music

To get a general idea of what's going on, I'm a CAD student and we are studying Electricity -- I was looking at a recent instructables guide that showed how to make a box that lights up to music. Well I was planning on doing something similar with a few twists. 1) Dependant on the frequency, there are certain LEDs that will light up 2) The ability to plug in a MP3 Player (Zune is my test subject) 3) The addition of two (2) small speakers around the size of maybe 2 inches My questions pertain to what exactly will I need to do here and where I can find information on the parts required for this project. By all means please try and refrain from giving me specific parts (If it requires a Transistor with some requirements [If a transistors do have any differences] please just say Transistor with x requirements). I don't mean to sound rude but I really want to try and figure things out on my own, but I'm not sure where to really look. I would grab bits and pieces off of these Instructables (Which are all very nice) but I want to actually know why to use a Transistor by reading up on it. If anyone can also mention to me a good place for speakers of smaller size I would appreciate that as well. Assuming I'll have problems with connecting certain things like a plug for a Zune -- if you are willing to lend your help please just mention it as a response. Thank you all a head of time!

Oooo, look what I came across today....

I was out and about today, going to local areas of interest, and we stopped at a little shop I hadn't been in for years. In amongst all the old tools, and bits of paraphernalia, were all these magazines (Popular Mechanics, Science and Mechanics, etc.) from the time of my youth. I was THRILLED, and so I started going through them. Well, I would have loved to have taken the whole box of them (about 50 or so) home with me, but at $3 a pop, I decided on just 2. The Popular Mechanics magazine from the year of my birth (not the month, this one was a Jan. issue). and the Science and Mechanics issue is from Aug. 1960. Neither is remarkable in any specific way (excepting the birth year one). At the same shop I also found an original copy of Gimbels Handy Book For Boys. © 1933I am thrilled at this find, not that it is terribly valuable as an investment, the cover - binding is not so good, but at $5, it has a treasure trove of info and tips, very similar to "The Boy Mechanic, yet different too.

What ever happened to the book?

Last I knew they used to have a book you could buy, you gave them a list of projects and they put it in the book for you and after buying the book, they would send it to you in color so that you could work on the projects. I've been in need of that book for some time, it's sorida a life and death matter. But not for a few years at least. So is the book still around to buy and could I buy it?

I forgot the name of this DIY Book Catalog?

I'm looking for a catalog my Mom used to get of DIY books. It was a small publishing house, a black and white catalog, and they would re-publish a lot of cool out of print things. I think they got their start with radio hobbyists? They had a really impressive list of pretty much everything-- radios, construction, farming, math, hydrogen engines, compost, crafts.... I think the family/company name started with an L and was in the southern half of the US?

Free Books!

Well, today my school's library was getting rid of free books, and me, having a disease that makes me unable to resist free things decided to go. When I went, I found some pretty great books! Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, and Custer's Last Stand, Burma Rifles, and Fire! Its Many Faces and Moods. Schweet.  I'm going to crack open some Verne and figure out what this steampunk is all about... haha Also, Something broke and it kind of erased what I typed earlier, but I got it on my blog, if you want to go, it's here (I apologize for spamming, it's just really late at night and I am a bum.)

I just wanted to show off one of my patches). Any questions, just ask.The total weight of the books on the "shelf" is: 19.8 lbs.
