Internet Explorer can not open this website.

This is the message I get when I try to get acess to a website such as Radio  I am using a Dell desktop with Windows Vista Home Basic  and am stuck with Dial-up connection which runs pretty slow anyway. The display then shifts to a screen that says something like  This webpage could not be opened.  This is not a new problem.  It's been happening for months. Anybody got an explanation or way to keep this from happening?  I run Microsoft Security Essentials but it always comes up clean.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Could this be caused by a virus or spyware, or maybe a software glitch? Thanks for all replys!  LeShane

"opened & fixed" logo

Hi everybody, I think it would be nice to have something like an "opened and fixed" logo. The purpose being to print it as a sticker, then, for example, when you open and fix an appliance, you can put the sticker on it, and when your friends ask, you can delight them talking endlessly about your endeavor. Irony aside, I think it can be an interesting counterpart to the "warranty void if removed" labels, also encouraging people to open and fix their own devices. There could also be an "opened and hacked" logo. I was thinking in something simple, like an "O&F;" with a circle around, or maybe the circle made of a screwdriver. I'm writing this due to my lack of design ability, in hope that someone with that ability finds the idea interesting enough to give it a try. Also, what do you think about it? is it a good idea? would you use it? Cheers, Andres. P.S.: If you think it's worth trying but nobody with technical skills shows up I can try creating a first version on Inkscape.

unable to open pdf

My customer has recently encountered a problem when trying to open most of their pdfs that they have been referencing for years on their pc.  Reader has a popup box that says "Adobe Reader could not open 'file.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded I have tried various programs to recover/restore/repair them, they all say the files aren't PDF files.  I have not paid for any recovery programs but would be willing to if they can demonstrate they can fix the problem first.

Gate opener with bluetooth

I wish to use a raspberry pi3 to detect when a paired smartphone in a vehicle comes in range to open a sliding gate. All the gate opening electronics is in situ. What are the pros and cons of such an idea and are there any instructables already using this method. I noted an in/out board using bluetooth detection here. Also how many devices can be paired to a RP3. I have not done any programing of a RP before. Thanks Paul Andrews

Open-Source Warfare

Open-Source Warfare is an IEEE Spectrum article discussing how information technology and the internet play a pivotal role in accelerating the adaptation of individuals against organizations through asymmetric warfare.Robb calls this new type of conflict "open-source warfare," because the manner in which insurgent groups are organizing themselves, sharing information, and adapting their strategies bears a strong resemblance to the open-source movement in software development. Insurgent groups, like open-source software hackers, tend to form loose and nonhierarchical networks to pursue a common vision, Robb says. United by that vision, they exchange information and work collaboratively on tasks of mutual interest. The reliance on IT also enables open-source groups to identify and respond to problems much more rapidly than a more structured, top-down entity can--be it the Pentagon or a large software company such as Microsoft. According to some estimates, it now takes Iraqi insurgents less than a month to adapt their methods of attack, much faster than coalition troops can respond. "For every move we make, the enemy makes three," U.S. Brigadier General Joe E. Ramirez Jr. told attendees at a May conference on IEDs. "The enemy changes techniques, tactics, and procedures every two to three weeks. Our biggest task is staying current and relevant."

How do I brace my garage door so the garage door opener doesn't warp the door where attached to the opener?

I have a one car garage door I'm installing a garage door opener to. The problem is the manufacturer of the door doesn't guarantee the vertical aluminum center bar on the top panel of the door won't bend or break during the operation of the garage door opener. How can I brace the L-shaped aluminum bar to take the stress of the door being automatically lifted without warping the bar or the top panel of the door? There is no information listed on the garage door manufacturer's website.

How can I make a sensor that will turn off my dust collector when the bin is full?

I am installing a cyclone dust collector in my workshop, and I want to make a sensor that will determine when my dust bin is full so that the chips and dust won't overflow into the filters.  I'm thinking garage door sensors could be blocked by sawdust rising into the transparent flex hose between the cyclone and bin, but I'm not sure how they work.  I would use them to turn on a warning light and turn off the dust collector.  Any ideas?  I'm good with tinkering and basic electricity, but am stuck trying to figure this out.

How can I open and close a window that works on a roller from left to right?

The house we have incorporates a security panel that prevents would be thieves from breaking in. My mother is close to 70 and from the kitchen counter the door I am trying to open and close is 38" from the edge of the counter. She is 5'6 and does not have the energy to slide the door open. She usually unlocks the door and then steps outside on to the balcony and opens it from there. I want to find a way to make it electric if possible. I haven't finished the tilework so I can still run electrical lines and switches to the area. The best idea I can come up with 12v automotive power window motor that is mounted on the right side of the opening. A dog ear be mounted on the top part of the opening for support, and a dog ear be mounted on the door...just right of the LEFT dog ear support itself which will have motion. Attach (weld) a screw onto the power window motor. When engaging the window motor to open the threaded rod revolves in place and the door opens. Same happens when the door closes. My problem for when the door is ACTUALLY supposed to stop in order to be locked by the built in handle. It needs a limiting switch that is engaged to cut power when the proper distance has been traveled. I got this idea from my gate opener for my driveway, the only difference there is that it operates on a chain and has 2 limiting switches for open and close. My father wants to go a simple route and put a pulley on each side of the window and if you want to open / close the window you pull the appropriate line. I just see that as ugly and will be breaking eventually.

Can't open newsletter

I'm having a very strange problem with the Instructables newsletter. Starting a month or two ago, the newsletter arrives in my inbox (I use webmail from my ISP, Shaw Cable), but I am unable to open the message. Normally I just click on the message and it opens, but when I click on the Instructables message nothing visible happens.I normally use Firefox 3. Today I tried it using IE 8 and got a message saying that some of the content would be delivered using a non https connection, blah blah blah. I said go ahead anyway, and the message opened, but none of the images displayed. So, it appears to be related to some setting in Firefox, or perhaps some javascript thing that works in IE but not firefox, but I can't figure it out. Can you give me any tips that might help me get it working in Firefox? Thanks,Steve

Hydrogen car to be Open Source

The manufacturer of a hydrogen car unveiled in London on Tuesday will make its designs available online so the cars can be built and improved locally. The Riversimple car can go 80km/hr (50mph) and travels 322km (200mi) per re-fuelling, with an efficiency equivalent to 300 miles to the gallon....The company will distribute the engineering designs to the 40 Fires foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that will make the designs "open source".The idea, they say, is to allow local manufacturing in small plants. This stands in contrast to the "economies of scale" that drive current plants to huge sizes and workforces. In addition, designs can be adjusted for local markets, using locally sourced parts or materials. The agreement will be such that if the designs are improved by a local manufacturer, those improvements will be sent back, so that what the company refers to as its "network of manufacturers" can contribute to the overall development of the product line.

Open Hardware Toolchain Survey

I'm not sure how many instructables readers/authors identify with the open source community, but what you guys are doing in terms of publicly documenting hardware projects is awesome and makes your perspective especially valuable.  The Open Hardware Toolchain Survey is an attempt to uncover a basic list of user/developer requirements that can be contributed to the documentation discussion and, ultimately, lead to a new generation of collaboration tools.  I would like to personally ask you to take 10-15 minutes to add your perspective and/or pass this request along to anyone you think might be interested. The compiled results of the survey will be made available and will also be used at the OSHWA's DocJam. Not sure if I can post links but you can just google "wareium survey" and it will be right at the top. Matthew Maier

Self opening-closing drawer

I'm hoping someone can help. I have a handicap that makes opening drawers and cupboards impossible via touch. Aside from foot. I've been trying to come up with a solution for this for a while now.  I need something that takes up little, if any drawer space. Is relatively cheap (since it needs to be replicated across multiple locations). Can be opened/stopped/closed via a single foot pedal. And that will stop if it encounters some sort of obstruction. Actuators that are able to open drawers to the size needed are very expensive, and I'm unsure if they have the stop function in case of blockage. Anyone have any suggestions/

Hello Friends!  If you are reading this then you are invited to my Open Studio and Show, Saturday October 24th from 4-8 pm in Berkeley CA. I have a number of pieces new and old to share with you including a brand new big one (see attached flyer)!    My shop-mates Quantum Builders (green homes) will also be having an open house so you have that much more of a reason to come.   I don't get many opportunities to show this many pieces at one time, and even fewer opportunities to meet and talk with you all,  so I hope you'll come if you can. Click here for full details and directions with map. I thought it would be more fun if I kept the new work semi-secret so I won't post final photos until the week following the show (sorry out-of-towners).  If you just can't wait, drop my by news page and you can see some of the works in progress.

What is a valve that can be opened and closed quickly and easily?

I want to make my own water gun (a la supersoaker), the only pitfall I have is I can't find an appropriate valve. A sprinkler valve requires electricity, a modded one will only close when all pressure is released, a ball valve would move to slowly, or be to stiff for a simple trigger mechanism... and I did have another example, but can't remember it. Essentially I want a valve with a semi-automatic action that can release large volumes of propellant. Thanks in advance.

Gate latch/opener design?

I'm building a fence and having trouble figuring out how to do the latch for a walking/utility gate. I want the fence to be almost seamless from the outside, so with a quick glance you couldn't tell there is a gate right there; however, the gate needs to be able to be opened from the outside with a key. The problem I'm having is that all the hardware I've found for gates use padlocks, so you could only open it from one side if it's locked, and the gate won't be thick enough to use a normal door handle or deadbolt. The parameters are: Opens from inside while locked from outside Outer hardware is minimally intrusive (doesn't stand out much, preferably nothing more than a key hole.) Actual latch can be surface mounted So far the only thing I've been able to come up with is to frankenstein the key half of a deadbolt with half of a turn handle latch I found that forks like a regular door knob but can be surface mounted. The problem is that I am afraid that the spring in the handle will be too much tor just the key to turn and it will wear out quickly. I would appreciate any ideas, and will try to clarify if there's anything someone doesn't understand. Thanks, -rob

Can you read it?

I've been meaning to show you this for a while, but I finally took some photos when I went to visit my parents. It's a clock. Really, it is. The arm rotates once per hour. The ball on the end is a camera, pointing at the ground. To tell the time, you walk around the clock to find out what hour is circled at the base of the arm, then look through one of the small round windows on the large sphere to see a TV that shows what the camera sees. The minutes are only marked every ten minutes, and in between those times the camera looks at featureless ground and confused people trying to see the time by looking up at the camera. On the hour, the arm raises in the air, and the camera has a look at the shop roofs, which are as ugly as commercial roofs the world over, and the speakers next to the benches (when they're working) make an odd fog-horn sort of noise. It's a bizarre, unfunctional object, in too small a space. Maybe if it was in a wide open square it would work as public interactive art, but here, wedged in a corner of a town with high unemployment it's a criminal waste of money.

create hard wired remote garage door opener?

Backstory (feel free to skip) So, my grandparents live in an apartment building and they have to get a daily visit by a nurse for a condition grandma has (it's not going to get away till she passes, so it's not a short-term issue). The apt. building has a big parking lot closed by a remote controlled gate that can only be opened with the transmitter -the tiny one you hook to your keychain-. The nurse gets there by car and it is not possible to leave it on the side of the road so my grandfather is forced to go out, get to the ground floor, walk around the building and open the gate with the remote, this is really time-wasteful so I tried opening the gate from the balcony but the transmitter hasn't got nearly enough juice toget the signal to the receiver, on top of the fact that they're on the wrong side of the building. End Backstory So, I was set on buying something AC powered, with a seriously extended range, that might send the signal there, but could not find anything.  Could any of you educate me on ho to build / mod something like that? thank you all in advance

*.xlsx files won't open? Answered

Problem: The only issue is with Excel *.xlsx documents. A friend somehow managed to associate the .xlsx files with Word, so of course it obviously fails to open with Word. All other Excel files... templates, older *.xls files and such open fine by double-clicking on them. Attempted fixes: 1)I have gone into and set *.xlsx documents to be associated with the Excel program, however the icon doesn't change to the normal Excel 2011 icon (the icon looks like a blank sheet w/ the normal Excel icon in the middle instead of off to the left side) 2)I have run the Office Repair to no avail 3)I have completely uninstalled, then reinstalled the entire Office suite too. 4)Finally, System Restore didn't work What happens when I try to open an .xlsx doc? The hourglass comes up like it's thinking about it for maybe 2 seconds, then just goes away and nothing happens. I wish I could say what happened or what changed to cause the problem, but my friend has no idea. By the way, I can open Excel, go to file-->open--> and open an .xlsx document that way. Or just drag the file into the opened Excel program and it works fine. After everything I've tried, I imagine there is just something registered incorrectly in the registry, but am unable to find out what exactly. Thank you in advance for your time...
