the weekly challenge

Maybe I am just being excessively dense, but is there a page to go to directly to view what the weekly challenge is?  The only ways I know to currently locate it are 1) if it is posted on the front page. 2) doing a search for the "weekly challenge" and sorting through the results to find the most current one. If there isn't one already, would it be possible to get a dedicated page or tab for the weekly challenge? thanks

I'd like to challenge everyone here that makes useful things.

I'd like to challenge everyone here that makes useful things.  I'm rebuilding an old light fixture and I'm focusing on efficiency.   My challenge is to get the highest amount of lumens with the lowest number of watts.  I'm stuck and I'd be willing to put a cash prize on this. I'd like for everyone that gives this a try to stick to DC voltage.

I submitted two more entries to the cookie challenge and yet they're not being shown and voting has already begun. I submitted them before the deadline. Will they show up on the cookies challenge page later on today?

Current challenges not visible on iPad

Until last week I was able to pull/view the current challenge on the home page (using my iPad).  Now it seems the only way I can view them is if I log onto my PC and click on "contests". Is there a way to view the current contests (that are still open) conveniently on my iPad?  Thanks!

Last Weekend for Launch It! Challenge!

OK, everyone, this is the last weekend to enter the Launch It! Challenge. Remember that three people will be getting an engraved Leatherman. One for the highest rating, one for the most pageviews, and one will be chosen at random. Considering the number of eligible entries in the contest right now, the odds of winning randomly are 1 in 30. Not too shabby! Also, five runners-up for ratings will be receiving a t-shirt. A t-shirt with a robot on it!So make something fly and make a cool instructable and video about it. Just make sure to post it before 11:59 pm PDT on Sunday. After the entries are in there will be four days to get ratings and pageviews before the contest is truly over.

Idea for a new cooking contest/challenge!

Creative Leftovers Challenge! 1) Create 1 meal as your base.  Has to be at least a main course and 1 side that will last through the whole challenge (Example - Steak, salad, and baked potatoes counts as a main course w/ 2 sides) 2) Create at least 1 way of using up the leftovers WITHOUT having the exact same thing each night and using as much of the original meal for 2 dinners (Example - Steak tacos (uses 1/2 steak and all of salad) and mashed potatoes (uses all baked potatoes w/ extra) for Leftover Dinner 1.  Chopped steak (uses last of steak) w/ gravy or sour cream over potato cakes (uses the last of the mashed potatoes) for Leftover Dinner 2) 3) All 3 meals must be posted together in a single step-by-step Instructable w/ each meal being 1 step.  Most creative/wild of the edible entries wins! It's just a thought...

Challenge: Make Something New

It's so easy to get into a rut and sometimes it's necessary to shake yourself out of it. So I'd like to issue a challenge to everyone to Make Something New. So here's what I'm proposing. You have until Sept. 21 to make something new for you and document it with a slideshow, video, or Instructable here on Instructables. Show what you've made and provide an explanation of how it's new for you. Reward: An achievement patch. So what is "new"? Anything you make right now will be new, but "new" here is talking about the experience of making the item. You can do something that's been done before by others, but the goal is to stretch yourself in a new direction. I don't know what everyone has done before so we'll be relying on the honor system, but I'd like you to push yourself. If you're always sewing clothes and are simply trying a new pattern that may be a little new to you, but it's not much of a stretch because you're using the same materials, tools, and skills that you already know. But if you've never done any metalwork and were to weld together a bike frame that would be very new.In your explanation of how your entry is new, be sure to talk about those things. What new materials, tools, skills, or designs are you using that you've never used before? How different is this from what you usually make?OK, to sum it up: - Make something new - Document it and post it on Instructables by 9/21 - Post a new comment here with a link to your post

XinCheJian participation at The Great Global Hackerspace Challenge

XinCheJian (http://xinchejian.com), the first Hackerspace in China, is one of the 30 Hackerspaces across the globe that have been selected to participate in the Great Global Hackerspace Challenge (GGHC) competition. The objective of the competition is to create an electronics build that will make a real and positive difference in an educational establishment. The competition runs for six weeks, from Monday March 21st to April 30th 2011. The winning project is evaluated on the following: How reproducible is the final project? How easily can the parts be sourced in locations around the world? How low cost is the final output? How well are the plans documented? How relevant is the project to helping education today? How inventive and creative is the design and build of the project? The selection of our participation proposal includes a 5900 RMB (US$900) budget in electronic components (including the required microcontroller and portable power source) generously provided by element14.com. Every Hackerspace that completes their project receives 10 soldering setups while the three semi-finalist Hackerspaces will each receive over 13000 RMB (US$2000) worth of electronic tools. The Hackerspace with the winning project gets a Tektronix MSO2024 oscilloscope worth over 36000 RMB (around US$5,600)! As an extra incentive, semi-finalists will be invited at the California Maker Faire 2011. To address the objectives of the competition, XinCheJian will focus on getting elementary and/or high school students acquainted with the intellectual processes of cooperative problem solving with out-of-the-box thinking. This will translate into an interactive and intelligent educational toy that stimulates students into a variety of challenging experiences. Want to join or help our team? Contact us at: gghc@xinchejian.com. To reach the competition organizers, contact hackerspace@element14.com. About the competition: http://www.element14.com/community/groups/the-great-global-hackerspace-challenge About XinCheJian (http://xinchejian.com): this Hackerspace serves as a beacon of free spirited and unhibited creation, both artistic and technological, to serve people that hunger for intellectual and economic advancement. By entering the Contest, each entrant agrees to abide by the terms of these Rules and by the decisions of Sponsor and the Judges, which shall be made in all cases in their sole and absolute discretion and are final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest. The Contest is governed by the laws of the State of California and applicable United States federal law, without regard to any conflicts of laws principles. The Contest is void where prohibited by law. The Contest is also governed by Sponsor's Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and other policies (collectively, the "Policies") pertaining to the Sponsor Site, although the Rules will govern any conflict between the Privacy Policy and the Rules. Exclusions from Eligibility. Employees of Sponsor, any  Co-Sponsor, or their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, partners, suppliers, or advertising or promotional agencies (including without limitation any Judges who are employees of Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor or any of their respective parents,     subsidiaries, or affiliates), as well as members of their households or their immediate families, may submit entries in the Contest, but any such entries are for information and entertainment purposes only and are not eligible to be considered for the purpose of selecting finalists or winners.  Judges who are not employees of Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor or any of their respective parents, subsidiaries, or affiliates, are not eligible to enter or win, nor are members of their households or their immediate families.   Entry. 1.Multiple entries are permitted, but only one entry per entrant can win a prize in the Contest.  Entrants must be registered users of the Sponsor Site to enter the Contest.  Registering for an account with the Sponsor Site may require each entrant to submit entrant's name, e-mail address, age or date of birth, and other details, and in the case of a minor, contact details for a parent or legal guardian for purposes of obtaining proof of parental consent, if Sponsor elects to do so.  Entries can be the work of more than one person, but for purposes of the Contest, each entry will belong to the "Primary Author" named in the entry, regardless of the number of contributors to that entry.  For winning entries, Sponsor will award the applicable prize to the named entrant only, and will not be responsible or liable for apportioning any prize among contributors to a winning entry.  Upon submission, all entries become subject to the Policies (including without limitation the provisions regarding ownership and use of user submissions as stated in the Terms of Use https://www.instructables.com/tos.html).  Entries will not be acknowledged or returned.  Entrants are permitted to modify or update an entry after submission, but are not permitted to do so after the Deadline.  Entries may remain posted on the Contest page of the Sponsor Site indefinitely following the Deadline, but Sponsor reserves the right to delete entries from the Contest page after the Contest ends, in its discretion.  Entries may not be created or submitted through any software-generated, robotic, programmed, script, macro, or other automated method.  Sponsor and Co-Sponsor will have no responsibility for, and will have the right to refuse in its discretion, any entries that have been tampered with, or entries that are misdirected, incomplete, non-conforming, corrupt, lost, late, or ineligible, whether due to Internet or e-mail server failure or otherwise.  Proof of transmission of an entry shall not constitute proof of receipt.  It is each entrant's responsibility to keep Sponsor informed of any changes to entrant's contact or other information during the Contest. Additional Entry Requirements. Each entry must comply in all respects with the Policies, including without limitation all requirements for user submissions, as stated in the Terms of Use https://www.instructables.com/tos.html for the Sponsor Site. Without limiting that requirement, each entry also must comply with the following: Each entry must be entirely the original work of the persons identified in the entry; If persons other than the entrant have contributed to an entry, the entrant must have the permission from each contributor prior to submitting the entry; Entries must not have been published prior to the Start Date; Entries must not have been entered in more than two other previous contests of Sponsor; Entries must not contain anything that is or may be: (i) threatening, harassing, degrading or hateful; (ii) defamatory; (iii) fraudulent or tortious; (iv) obscene, indecent or otherwise objectionable; or (v) protected by copyright, trademark or other proprietary right without the express prior consent of the owner of such right; and Entries must not contain any material that would give rise to criminal or civil liability or that encourages conduct that constitutes a criminal offense. Judging Process. The winner(s) will be determined by the Judges, who will apply the Criteria to evaluate entries. The entries with the highest score(s) will be selected as the winner(s), and the number and type of winners will be as identified in Section A above. The Judges have the right to disqualify any entry that is not in compliance with these Rules, in the Judges' discretion. In the event that a winning entry is disqualified, the next-highest scoring entry will be selected as the alternate winner.  In the event that one or more of the identified Judges is unavailable, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute Judges of comparable qualification, to be determined by Sponsor in its discretion. Prize Terms All values are stated in United States dollars or British Pound Sterling as indicated.  If a stated  prize is unavailable, Sponsor has the right to substitute one or more items of equal or greater value, in its discretion.  No prize is exchangeable, transferable, or redeemable for cash.  The winner(s) will be solely responsible for complying with any and all     applicable statutes, laws (including, without limitation, common law), rules and regulations and for bearing any personal income, VAT, withholding taxes, customs duties, or other taxes, fees,     insurance, surcharges or other costs relating to any prize. THE PRIZE(S) WILL BE GIVEN AWAY BY SPONSOR AND ANY CO-SPONSOR(S) "AS IS."  SPONSOR AND ANY CO-SPONSORS DO NOT MAKE, AND EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM, ANY WARRANTY, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, REGARDING ANY PRIZE OR PORTION THEREOF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY IMPLIED OR STATUTORY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.  SOME JURISDICTIONS MAY NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, CONSUMER GUARANTEES AND SIMILAR RIGHTS, IN WHICH CASE SUCH EXCLUSION SHALL APPLY ONLY TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW IN THE RELEVANT JURISDICTION. WITHOUT LIMITATION, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, ALL WARRANTIES AND REPRESENTATIONS, IN RELATION TO THE PRIZES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED BY STATUTE, LAW (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, COMMON LAW), RULE, REGULATION OR OTHERWISE, ARE HEREBY EXCLUDED.   Announcement; Award of Prize(s). 1. Representations. 1.By entering the Contest, each entrant represents and warrants that: (a) the entrant meets all eligibility requirements of the Contest; (b) in entering and participating in the Contest, the entrant has complied and will comply in all respects with these Rules and all applicable statutes, laws (including, without limitation, common law), rules and regulations; and (c) the information provided in the entrant's entry, including without limitation all contact information, is true, accurate, and complete in all respects.   Assumption of Risk.  By taking any action to create an entry for the Contest, each entrant, on his or her own behalf and on behalf of his or her personal representatives, heirs, executors, and assigns, acknowledges and agrees that: (a) THERE MAY BE DANGER     AND RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE INVOLVED IN CREATING AN ENTRY; (b) THESE RISKS AND DANGERS MAY ARISE FROM FORESEEABLE OR UNFORESEEABLE CAUSES; (c) SUCH ENTRANT AND HIS OR HER PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES, HEIRS, EXECUTORS, AND ASSIGNS ASSUME ALL RISKS AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, DEATH, PROPERTY DAMAGE, OR OTHER LOSS ARISING OUT OF THE CREATION OF ANY ENTRY, WHETHER CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE OR ANY OTHER CAUSE; and (d) such entrant and his or her personal representatives, heirs, executors, and assigns are relinquishing any and all rights he, she, or they now have or may have in the future to sue or take any other action against Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor, the prize manufacturers, any other entities involved in the administration of the Contest, each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, and affiliates, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and representatives (the “Sponsor Parties”) on the basis of any injury, death, damage, or other loss that may be suffered arising from any action taken in the creation of any entry,     including but not limited to claims based on allegations of negligence by any of the Sponsor Parties.       Release. To the maximum extent permitted by law, by entering the Contest, each entrant releases and holds harmless the Sponsor Parties from any and all responsibility,     liability, damages  (including, without limitation, direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, statutory, and other damages), losses, costs, or expenses of any kind arising out of or     relating to: (a) entry or participation in the Contest, including but not limited to disputes among individuals claiming to have contributed to any winning entry; (b) any violation by the entrant     of these Rules, the Policies, or applicable laws; (c) misappropriation, infringement, or other violation of any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of publicity, privacy, or other legal or contractual right of any person attributable to entrant or any entry submitted by entrant; (d) the acceptance, possession, receipt, or use of any prize or any item purchased with any prize (e.g., if the prize includes a gift card); (e) any entries or votes that have been tampered with or that are misdirected, incomplete, non-conforming, corrupt, lost, late, or ineligible; (f)     any problems or technical malfunctions (including but not limited to errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, or delays in operation or transmission) of any computer, telephone, modem, cable, satellite, network, hardware, online system, server, software, or     other equipment or provider, including any incorrect, incomplete, garbled or jumbled information resulting therefrom; (g) any Internet traffic congestion or website accessibility or delays; (h) printing or typographical errors in any Contest-related materials; or (i) any other technical or human error that may occur in connection with the Contest (the “Causes”).  If anyone makes any claim against any of the Sponsor Parties arising out of or relating to any of the Causes attributable to the entrant, the entrant will pay for any damages, losses, liabilities, costs, penalties, and expenses, including without limitation attorneys’ and experts’ fees and costs, incurred in connection with such claim. What Is the Difference Between a Challenge and a Contest?

Does anybody know the difference between a contest and a challenge? It has been driving me crazy! I saw a forum that said they wanted to create a challenge. Is it possible to create a challenge?

Launch It Challenge Rules: technicality?

At the beginning of my launch_it video, my "Challenge Entry" sign is part of the titles. Is this acceptable? or do I read the rules verbatim and show myself holding a physical sign in the video?

Robot Challenge Question

So, I recently got around to making an Instructable for my RC robot arm I built for my school's Science Olympiad team, with the intent of also entering the Robot Challenge. Lo and behold, I believed my Instructable eligible for not only the Robot Challenge, but also the Remote Control Challenge, so I clicked away and entered into both. I heard back that my entry was accepted for the Remote Control Challenge within less than one business day, but to my dismay, I have heard nothing back about the Robot Challenge. This is why I am calling upon the wise wisdom of this website, hoping to discover what my Instructable may lack to be entered into the Robot Challenge, so I can go about to add to it and be accepted into the elusive halls of the famed Robot Challenge on this glorious website. So, I guess, to be a bit more concise, is there something missing from my Instructable that is preventing it from being entered into the Robot Challenge (so I can modify it before the contest closes)? Thanks a million and one.

Contests vs. Challenges - what the what??

Hey gang! It has come to my attention that there is confusion about the difference between contests and challenges.  And believe me, we understand - we're still hammering out the details ourselves!  So I'm going to be super candid, and give you a glimpse "behind the curtain." The main difference as we see it is: Contests are pre-determined and often sponsored by awesome folks like Radio Shack or Singer.  They take more planning, and are usually open for longer periods of time.  Typically the amount of prizes given away is much greater than in challenges. Challenges are determined by the editors who run them, often on a whim, or you know, for fun.  Challenges are completely built and managed by said editors, so sometimes the html looks funky or things don't always go as smoothly as the well-constructed architecture we have in place for contests.  (I'm still learning html!)  They're meant to be smaller in scope, faster, and have a different prize structure (the more entries, the better the swag) than contests. Challenges started as an experiment.  They are labor intensive to run and maintain (I'm still working on building a system for tracking old challenges and winners).  Everything happens by hand.  Sometimes the rules change, and sometimes the pages look different.  We're still experimenting with the best way to do these so we can set standards for them. And once we know that this "experiment" has been successful, we can try and lean on the development team for some support to make it all look (and run) much better! The distinction between the phrases "Contest" and "Challenge" is new.  You may notice that some of our Contest banners still say Challenge on them.  We were originally calling contests "Challenges," and the editorial experiments "Speed Challenges."  But then there seemed to be some confusion about whether or not the projects submitted to "Speed Challenges" had to be speedy themselves, and then some of the challenges needed to run for a month or more due to their theme (hard to build a robot in a week!), so we scrapped the "Speed" part.  Eventually we settled on differentiating the two simply as "Contest" and "Challenge."  There's even more debate about identifying the challenges with the editors running them, vs calling them "Weekly" challenges (which we know can be a misnomer), and lots more.  You probably didn't need to know all that. Anyway. Please do feel free to use this space to vent your frustrations, offer your suggestions, and ask for clarification.  Just today I mistakenly swapped the terms challenge and contest in our daily meeting, so I feel your pain.  And really, we just want to make you guys happy.

Yet another challenge from TheDunkis

Here's a cool idea I had for awhile. It doesn't seem too practical but still pretty cool if you can pull it off. True Slide action. Basically it's the same as true bolt action in how it works. Make a handle loading pistol where the slide pushes a round from the loading chamber into the firing chamber for more power. It actually shouldn't be that hard. The most difficult part will probably be the trigger. To make it more of a challenge, try making it as compact as possible like a real pistol. I might actually be able to build and review the winner's this time. I'll give you a basic image to give you an idea of what I'm looking for...but mostly just so I can get through the filter faster.

Kiteman Challenge

Sorry folks, due to problems out of Kiteman's control, he cannot publish the full details of the International Challenge at the moment. However, if you are waiting to see what you need to Make to enter, I can reveal that it needs to be something with a (very) vaguely "international" theme, whether that is the cuisine of another country, a device to make foreign travel more bearable, or some other Make you can fit into the definition or concept of "international". Prizes will be: > One first prize of a full 12 month pro membership > One second prize of a six month membership > Two runners-up of single 3-month memberships. > Various patches Entrance will be open to all members, regardless of location, but there will be special restrictions regarding the prizes. Please remember that this is not an official Instructables contest, Kiteman is running it as a private individual, so it is not bound by the site's current contest rules.

Another Challenge from TD

This is another quick idea I got just because I'm kind of curious of what you guys would make. Basically all you need to do is make a realistic looking gun that isn't actually a real gun. You can base separate parts off of other guns if you want (like using M16/4 magazines for example) but try to make it as unique as possible. Make sure it would seem like something that could actually be made. Give as much fake barrel as needed depending on the type of gun. Also make sure it actually works for both loading and firing. If you have any "futuristic" concepts that still seem possible and not so far-fetched (kind of like the super v concept) you may include them as long as if you give a basic idea of how it may work. I'm also interested in features that make them look even more like a real weapon such as removable magazines and mag releases, charging handles (fake or not), selector switch, sights, etc. Shells would be another cool feature but not required. Anyone up for it? I'm thinking of making something myself.

SF Climate Challenge

If you live in San Francisco, this sounds like a great contest. http://www.sfclimatechallenge.org/The contest is among teams of five or more households. There are several ways to get involved. You can start your own team with your friends, families or coworkers. You can join an existing team. Or you can just sign up solo as part of your local neighborhood team. The contest begins October 25th. You spend your next PG&E;* billing period doing everything you can to reduce your energy use. The more energy your team saves, the better your chances of winning. It can be as simple as turning off a few lights and lowering the thermostat, to as dramatic as installing solar panels on your roof or creating a human-powered generator. It's all up to you.At the end, we compare the contest period with your bills from the same time last year, and dish out cash and prizes to the teams who've done the best and come up with the most creative solutions. Even if that isn't you, you'll still have saved some money on your power bill and helped fight global warming. So in a sense, everyone wins.Prizes:Greatest absolute reduction in energy use: $5,000Greatest percentage reduction in energy use: $5,000Greatest reduction by a School: $2,500Greatest reduction by a neighborhood organziation: $1,000Greatest reduction by a business or other organziation: $1,000

A real challenge for you K'nexperts

I've had this idea for awhile now though I figured I'd save it for myself. I finally decided I don't really feel up to trying to make one myself. I'll let you do that for me. Basically the idea is a "perfect" war weapon. I'm not sure if the idea will be realistically perfect but the idea sounds cool in general so on with the challenge. Basically the point is to incorporate a close range, medium range, and maybe a long range weapon into one compact package. My idea of this is a pump action, repeating shotgun or easy to reload normal mag gun, a bolt action or turret gun, and possibly a slingshot. I have a paint drawing of my design for the concept for you to look at for an example. You are free to use whatever ideas you want though as long as you have a short and medium-long options. I don't care if you have a slingshot as I don't think they'd be super effective but it would be impressive to see you pulling it off. I will be judging the guns personally. Seeing how I don't have the time to build all of them I'll just have to judge them by first impressions so therefore I will be judging on: Looks- It shouldn't look messy. As long as it's rather clean cut I shouldn't mind too much. Size- I want it as compact as possible. I don't care if you have a stock or not as long as it looks good. Efficiency- Kind of similar to size. I want to see how well you can make the gun work. Effectiveness- I'd appreciate a video or otherwise an honest summary of how it performs. I don't care how far the short range gun can shoot as long as you can dish out some heavy fire. If you choose to add a slingshot, it should be tested with rifled rods (finned). I don't care how big the turret is if you choose to use one but chances are I'll only have enough pieces to make an 8 round turret. The one that I like the best I'll build and review in a video. Be warned I'll probably be harsh (but pretty generous as far as this gun goes if you can get the whole thing working) as I use 5/10 as my average base. 10/10 means that it was executed perfectly so don't expect to get one in any category. So who's up for the challenge? C'mon I want to build a gun like this but am too lazy to do it myself lol. You may proceed to look at my crap paint drawing.

Help create a new art-form.

A recent recall to an old BBC thread (which has been running for six years!) reminded me that some people here like Haiku. You don't know haiku?A simple form of poemOf ancient Japan.First, five syllables,Then seven, then five againIn only three lines. There are variations on the theme (a personal favourite is the SciFaiku ), so I thought, why not start a new form - the Mak-u.Try and stick to the three lines/17 syllable format, but with allowances for creativity (as per SciFaiku), and each one to include a reference, however obscure or vague, to the making process (tools, ways of making things...).Birth of an art-form,Copyleft and open-source,On Instructables.Have a go, see what you can do.The old and the young,Together, fixing the worldWith a hot-glue gun
