Categories and Channels

We've just released the big recategorization work which has been occupying the whole dev team for the last few weeks.  Christy has written up an explanation of it here so I don't need to say too much.  That's the big thing; there are a few more bugfixes in Pro payments and some caching changes to help with our bandwidth but check out the browse pages!  I found a bunch of interesting instructables I hadn't seen before just while verifying the functionality.

Dual-Channel RAM? Answered

I have a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 Motherboard and an i5-760 CPU. I have been using 4x1GB DDR3-10600 modules, and then recently bought 2x4GB DDR3-10600 modules hoping to get 10GB, however, I can't seem to get it to work. All the modules are in working order and work individually. I currently just have a single 4GB module in. If I insert more, I either get a constant bios speaker tone indicating RAM error, or it will post successfully, but Windows will bluescreen. I have looked in the booklet and it is unclear as to how I should install the modules, but I thought I had to install them in matched pairs corresponding to the coloured slots on the motherboard. I have tried the 4GB modules in the white slots and the 1GB modules in the blue slots, but it won't post. Putting the two 4GB modules in a white and blue slot will post fine, but BSOD on startup. Any idea how I can get this configuration to work with my board? My CPU and board both support dual-channel DDR3 memory, so I can't see the problem here.

What's the difference between N-channel and P-channel?

I'm new to the world of electronics (though learning something new every day) and I've seen a lot of references to either N-channel transistors or field effect transistors, but I have been wondering what the difference is?  If someone could explain to me how the two are different in electrical characteristics, as well as in their applications, I would appreciate it immensely.

Discovery channel show, hacking electricity?

There used to be  a show on Discovery channel (I think it was discovery) where a guy would "hack" things.   In one show he hacked electricity and showed how he put a coil and some magnets on a bicycle to power a GPS unit.  I have tried to find information on this show but can't seem to find it.  It's as if the show never existed.   I am pretty sure I saw the episode within the last 3 years.  Does anyone know what this show was called and/or know of any video links to this particular (hacking electricity) episode? Thanks

An Opps Purchase on Ebay Is it Salvageable?

So i have an 1998 dodge ram 1500 i purchase with no power options at all so i got power window regulators and replaced the door panels and bam I've got power windows. and since the door panels had lock buttons i bought some cheap 12v actuators off eBay and wired them up and bam. power locks.. THEN in all my creativity i was like i'll just buy an RF 4 channel kit and make it key-less. so i ordered this kit not realizing what type it was http://www.ebay.com/itm/320783435624?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2920wt_1185 to summarize this kit requires you press one button to activate the a channel and press a second button to disable the active channel.. not at all what i was looking for.  Is there any way i can convert the kit i've already paid for into a momentary style. so as long as i'm holding the channel button down its active. ????  here are all the chip/ component numbers. 4x SRA-12VDC-CL 1x  SC2272-L4 - BD25D5D1 1x 9530FH~~~~~~ unreadable some residue on the chip a few caps a few resistors and an LED..  anyone think this is doable or should i just shelf it and get a diff kit?

Help selecting a n-channel mosfet and resister

Hey guys! Been a while. . . Anyways I was looking for some guidance on selecting an N-channel mosfet, and also what resistor to use when I'm applying voltage to the gate. So I'm working some long LED strips, and I need the mosfet to be able to handle at least 7 amps, so I was hoping for like a 10 amp mosfet or so. I just didn't want to guy buy the first mosfet I found on digikey, I was just hoping for some cheap good options or popular ones. I needs to be able to do PWM. Also I don't know where in the datasheets to find the information on what resistor to use on the gate. For instance I see people using anything from a 1K to a 5K resister with a TIP120. How do you select that information? I will be using an 5v output from my Arduino.  So after searching ebay I found the IRFZ44N mosfet, 55v and 49A. I know this is way over my needed specs but I can get 50 of them for 10 bucks. Steal. Since it's so overrated what problems might I run into if any? Thanks guys! What I've found so far: IRF740 - 400v 10A

New Instructables Categories and Channels

What's new Over the past few months, one of our big projects has been building new categories and channels for Instructables.  We're doing this to make it easier for users to find content and to make more compelling products for advertisers.  Much of the existing content has been recategorized by algorithm or by someone here at the lab, but we'll need your help both in making sure we (or the robot) got it right.  So, I wanted to give you a heads-up before the new scheme goes live, explain why we think it's important, and ask for your help! Why we're updating categories The existing categorization scheme with its 18 channels has served us well, but we've outgrown it.  First, the channels are too broad to meaningfully help a new user find more of the content they are excited about.  Should a new user arrive to a knitting Instructable from a Google search, they often have trouble finding other knitting Instructables within the Craft channel.  Related Instructables are helpful, but aren't clicked as often as we'd like, and don't give an immediate sense of the variety and number of knitting Instructables we have available.  The primary and secondary channels associated with an Instructable put yet another stumbling point in this new user finding more great content.  To new users, it's not immediately obvious that we allow multiple channels per Instructable, so when they are browsing through the Craft Instructables, it can be confusing to see a project with LEDs or a home repair project that happen to have Craft as their secondary channel.  This has been a similar point of confusion for our advertisers, who don't understand our current channel system. I'll be sad to see our two-channel categorization scheme go, but it's a necessary change to improve the way the site functions.  It feels a little bit like we're growing up! How the new categories and channels work To address these issues, we've created five new top-level categories and, within each category, lots of new channels.  Each Instructable will be placed in a single category and a single channel within that category.  The new categories are Living, Outside, Play, Technology, and Workshop.   • Living has all things related to crafting, decorating, cooking, parenting, and organizing. • Play has all things related to fun and games. • Workshop is everything one might do in a workshop or shed: home improvement, woodworking, and working on cars or bikes. • Technology and Outside are very similar to the existing Outdoors and Tech channels. Only five top-level categories might seem like too few, but remember that the vast majority of new visitors come directly to an Instructable via search - these folks will see other channels related to the Instructable they're viewing. For example, someone first coming to Instructables via a search for a sewing project will see that the project is in a sewing channel, that we have a knitting channel, and that both are in our Living category. Someone who has an account on Instructables is smarter than the average internet-searcher (in my opinion), so our community will quickly learn how to navigate the new structure. Hopefully we'll all discover lots of new Instructables in the process! How to recategorize your Instructables Log in, and go to your Instructable.  Click the "Change Keywords, Category(s), License" text in the Author Options box, and you'll see a section called "New Categories."  Pick a top-level category from the upper drop-down menu, then select a channel from the second menu.  Hit Update, and you're done!  When the new organization scheme is visible on the site in a few weeks, this is the category and channel your Instructable will appear in. We're still working out the kinks in this new system, and expect to be creating and combining channels as needed to make finding things on the site easier.  While you must pick a category, if you don't see a channel that matches your project, you may choose to leave it unsorted.  We'll keep an eye on unsorted projects, and will either sort it or update the channels as needed. Thanks for your help!  We hope this new scheme makes it easier to find the projects you want to see on Instructables.

DIY 2 CHANNEL AMP?

Hey guys,  I have been thinking, and I am going to build some solar speakers.  Now this is not my first time building solar speakers, so I know how to wire everything.  The only difference is this time I want to want to build my own amplifier.  I want to build a 2 channel 60-80watt amplifier.  I haven't found any schematics online that are similar to those, and I would want to wire in an off switch, a volume knob, a bass knob, and a treble knob.  Also, I would want to wire in an 3.5MM jack at the minimum.  If anybody could help me with some schematics and a list of parts, that would be wonderful.  Also, if anyone knows how, is it possible to wire a USB port onto here that will not only charge the device, but would also play music from the device to the amp.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

'Leather' channel under 'Workshop'?

I believe a 'Leather' channel under the 'Workshop' category would be a good idea. I say this, because I'm often looking for leather-related instructables, and I suspect that many other people are, too. Leatherworking is as much its own specialized skill as sewing, woodworking, electronics, etc. Maybe you could even inaugurate the grand opening with a contest. :)

Better Chatroom -- IRC Channel

EDITFrom what I've heard, the meebo chatroom has some flaws... I figure its worth a shot of trying again in IRC. I won't go into the details, but it should be a way better method of chatting ;-)I suggest Chatzilla for a client. There's also [www.mibbit.com mibbit] which is online and has an embeddable widget, but I don't really like it as much.I want an IRC channel, and god-dangit I'm going to make one!Its #instructables on irc.freenode.netIf you're already using something like Pidgin or Trillian, IRC should probably be on there, just pick a username, server is "irc.freenode.net", then just join the chat #instructablesIf you aren't -- MIRC Chatzilla is a good client...Anyway... just wanted to let y'all know it exists :P

Youtube Ideas

I wanted to ask for some advice and feedback on my youtube channel as well as some new movie ideas. First off my Youtube Channel is very special to me and i think with the right work and attitude i cant get to to go farther: my youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Thelostrolo. Why the name Thelostrolo? well i created the channel when i was 11 (now nearly 15) and i thought i might as well keep the name! (I am working a big hunger games related project which will be uploaded to another channel) I am not sure if i should create a new channel. but that would mean starting from scratch and trying to get recognition again, but maybe you guys could help!? Anyway back to my idea: I had a phew ideas and of course ill need help as i cannot film on my own! The first idea is a simple idea called: 'The Confrontation" which is a simple action thriller type movie with gun movie effects and explosions! THe other on was: "Never look back"  a more serious film in which there is a kid who is bullied and one day is knocked out. He wakes up at home, but no-one was at home, so he decides to go out for a dog walk, he then comes across the bullies except they're afraid of him. etc etc and it ends with him finding out that he is not who he used to be! I could really do with some peoples feedback... not just because this took me a long time to type up! Also if you did check out my channel post your below and i might subscribe :D Thanks for the help Rowan Prosser- Rowans Movies - Thelostrolo RATE, COMMENT AND SUBCRIBE!

Regarding Featuring at various levels...

At the moment, a full feature for a project gets that project onto the front page as an "Editor's Pick", but all a feature at Category or Channel level earns an author is a small star on the project's thumbnail. What I think should happen is... I look at the front page, I see the most recent top-level featured projects (as now) I click on a Category, say, Food, I see all the top-level food projects, plus all the Category-level featured projects. I click on a Channel, say, Sandwiches, I see all the top-level, Category-level and the Channel-level sandwiches. That way, authors will be rewarded for their work with the increased traffic they deserve. The photo is irrelevant, I just don't like publishing topics with no image.  It's the Angel of the North, with Conker-X sitting on the toes.  I took it on the way home from the Newcastle Maker Faire.

Pilot flies over English Channel with jetpack

A Swiss pilot has crossed the English Chanel with a jet-powered wing. He started the trip by jumping out of a plane over Calais and landed with a parachute in Dover. All together, the whole flight lasted 10 minutes to make the 22 mile flight. The 49-year-old flew on a plane to more than 8,200ft (2,500m), ignited jets on a wing on his back, and jumped out.Mr Rossy had hoped to reach speeds of 125mph.It felt "great, really great", said Mr Rossy: "I only have one word, thank you, to all the people who did it with me." Hit the link to see the video. Video of flight

Look what oboma did

I was scrolling through my dish network guide and what do I see? The Obama channel. Yes, that's right, he bought his own tv channel: dish channel 73. This channel broadcasts his ideas 24/7. IT's just a 2 minute message looping all day. In my opinion that is just wrong. I don't mean to offend anyone, especially those who like him, but I don't beleive in 24/7 broadcasts by candidates.

Small led driver?

I need a chip that will be able to power  5 or more LEDs not past like 10 though cause it's not necessary channels of LEDs ,I want to be able to have each channel doing different patterns at the same time, blinking ,fading ,or just on.  (it doesn't matter how much MA the chip can handle as I will be using transistors to amplify the signal ,most likely) It needs to be able to fit in a 1/2 inch tube. I think this one will work but im not sure. http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=NCP1840 I think this will only work on printed PCBs if I can i'd rather have something i can wire up with ether perfboard or wires.

Phonograph only outputs left channel?

It's a Beogram 8002 phonograph and a Rotel RA-8408X amplifier. Much to my dismay, the phonograph appears to only be outputting audio to the left channel, even with a stereo LP.  The speakers are wired correctly (I've confirmed that, using a different source, the speakers output stereo), and everything is plugged in as it should be.  I've checked the audio cable(s) that goes from the phonograph to the amp with a multimeter and didn't find any shorts.  Curiously enough, the plug that goes into the phonograph (it appears to be proprietary) has 5 pins and a ground, but only 3 of the pins do anything.  Apparently this setup cost my Dad a pretty penny when he bought it, so I'd really like to fix it.  Any help is appreciated.

New Instructables Categories and Channels are Live!

Our new categories and channels are now live!   Check out the previous forum topic for more information about why we made the changes, and how it will improve your experience on Instructables.  We now have five top-level categories, each with lots of new channels.  Here's a brief rundown of the new categories: • Living has all things related to crafting, decorating, cooking, parenting, and organizing. • Play has all things related to fun and games. • Workshop is everything one might do in a workshop or shed: home improvement, woodworking, and working on cars or bikes. • Technology and Outside are very similar to the existing Outdoors and Tech channels. Roam around the site and give the new categories and channels a test-drive. I bet the new scheme will make it easier to find neat old projects from our archives - with over 35,000 Instructables, there's bound to be something awesome you've missed! As always, we're learning as we go and expect to do some tweaking to get our categories and channels exactly right.    One of the things you can do to help is make sure we've sorted your Instructables to the right place - check out the end of this post to learn how to recategorize your Instructables!

Transparent LCD - Alpha Channel Monitor

I'm working on a project for my MFA, and am trying to figure out how to hack some LCD's. The idea being that I need a screen that will simply display black or transparent, no colors, but it should be able to accept video input of some type. Hacking a tv or iPad seems the most likely route. The remaining image should show the ambient background through the screen with certain areas shaded according to the luminance or darkness of the video input. While I understand that with all of the polarizing filters applied, light transmission is less than 5% in some lcds, I don't know what happens if you remove the polarizing filters? I remember the old 'Tiger' lcd games that were quite transparent and high contrast, but they definitely didn't play any video! If anyone has any experience with LCD's and the polarizing filters, I'd love to hear your input. Alternately, if anyone has ideas on a video capable b&w; display... They all seem to be for medical purposes and are quite expensive! Thanks!

Fully insulated channels?

I was looking to TENS units for experimentation and to try to rid myself of knee pain without meds. I was also looking into potentially building one due to the fact that i could probably do it cheaper depending on how i decide to do it. One of the TENS units i saw said that there was dual channels that were fully insulated, while another one i saw said duel channel but was not fully insulated. What does this fully insulated channel mean, and how would i do that in a DIY TENS unit?

Global Warming - Ruling on Documentary

UK Broadcasting watchdog OfCom has ruled that the Channel 4 documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle broke broadcasting rules by implying that GW was not due to human activity. The film's key contentions were that the increase in atmospheric temperatures observed since the 1970s was not primarily caused by emissions of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, and that the modern focus on climate change is based in politics rather than science. It is seen in some "climate sceptic" circles as a counter to Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth, and credited with influencing public perception of climate science. It has reportedly been sold to 21 countries and distributed on DVD. GW experts featured in the documentary complained that they were quoted out of context, had not been told of the aims of the programme makers, and some quotes attributed to experts were, allegedly, made up by the reporters."It's very disappointing that Ofcom hasn't come up with a stronger statement about being misled," said Sir John Houghton, a former head of the UK Met Office and chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientific assessment. "I know hundreds of people, literally hundreds, who were misled by it - they saw it, it was a well-produced programme and they imagined it had some truth behind it, so they were misled and it seems Ofcom didn't care about that," he told BBC News."The programme has been let off the hook on a highly questionable technicality," said Bob Ward, former head of media at the Royal Society, who played a prominent role in co-ordinating objections to the film. "The ruling noted that Channel 4 had admitted errors in the graphs and data used in the programme, yet decided that this did not cause harm or offence to the audience." Plaintiffs accused the programme of containing myriad factual inaccuracies, but Ofcom says it was "impractical and inappropriate for it to examine in detail all of the multifarious alleged examples... set out in the complaints." On another issue - whether contributors to the programme had been treated fairly - Ofcom mainly found against Channel 4 and the film's producer WagTV. Former UK chief scientific adviser Sir David King had been misquoted and had not been given a chance to put his case, the regulator said. Ofcom also found in favour of Carl Wunsch, an oceanographer interviewed for the programme, who said he had been invited to take part in a programme that would "discuss in a balanced way the complicated elements of understanding of climate change", but which turned out to be "an out-and-out propaganda piece, in which there is not even a gesture toward balance". The film alleged that the IPCC's scientific reports were driven by politics rather than science, and Ofcom ruled the organisation had not been given adequate time to respond. Connect ESCs with RC receiver?

I am trying to connect 4 ESCs with a FlySku 6 Channel Receiver. I managed to connect all four of them to the throttle channel and it works fine. However, is it possible to connect them to other channels wiht them being plugged in the throttle channel at the same time? I am making a quad-copter and I am not sure what channels to use? like I know that we need the throttle channel to change the throttle and the motor speed. but like to change the pitch, roll and yaw, we need the other channels too right? So can anyone please guide me through it? I am using a flycky CT6B transmitter and a 6 channel receiver.

Pedal-powered airship gets half way...

A French amateur pilot's attempt to be the first to cross the channel on a pedal-propelled airship has failed.Stephane Rousson, 39, from Nice, took off from Hythe on the Kent coast at about 0800 BST and was half-way to the French coast by 1300 BST.But he was hampered by a change in the wind direction and called off the trip 11 miles from Wissant in France.Mr Rousson said: "I'm not disappointed. I feel happy because it had nothing to do with any technical failure."During the challenge, Mr Rousson was suspended underneath the balloon envelope in a carbon fibre gondola, powering the two propellers with his feet using a bicycle-like contraption. The most amusing thing about the whole trip is the safety system:Just in case Rousson found himself flying irretrievably high, he hung an open penknife from the gondola framework, with the intention of popping the balloon and heading for a splashdown.Sorry, that's the second most amusing thing. The most amusing thing is the pilot's childhood inspiration - ET.BBC article
