Long distance proximity detector

Hello.  Does anybody have any idea on how to make a very cheap proximity sensor, which could work over a distance of about 100 metres? I want to make a system where LEDs (carried by people!) change colour as they approach a certain point, i.e, white LEDs turn red as they move towards a central point. The problem is I want to have 50+ separate LEDs, and I'm on a very tight budget! Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Sensor to measure weight.

Hi everyone, I am stuck. I am trying to find a method or sensor to do what I want. Basically, I am trying to make a cheap flat weigh scale- light weight , flexible and portable (carried in a brief case or lap top case); thinner than using load cell sensors. I was hoping for a flat compression fabric , foam or piezo resistive pressure sensor, but have not found what I was looking for. It needs to be able to measure 50 to 250 lbs & fit on a counter. Does something like this even exist? Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you Appl314

How can I build a privacy fence out of bamboo?

I need to build an 8 foot privacy fence on a budget and have access to free bamboo. What would the easiest way be to make a privacy fence for my backyard. I was thinking of using U shaped "tracks" of 2x4 on the top and bottom and then just sliding the bamboo into them. Any reason this wouldnt work? Thanks!

The $2500 Car

From a NYTimes article, a story about a new $2500 car hitting the market in India. It won't pass US or European emissions or safety standards, but still- how neat is this? For Tata Motors of India, which will introduce its ultra-cheap car on Thursday, the question was, what could it take out?The company has kept its new vehicle under wraps, but interviews with suppliers and others involved in its construction reveal some of its cost-cutting engineering secrets — including a hollowed out steering-wheel shaft, a trunk with space for a briefcase and a rear-mounted engine not much more powerful than a high-end riding mower. The upside is a car expected to retail for as little as the equivalent of $2,500, or about the price of the optional DVD player on the Lexus LX 470 sport utility vehicle. The model appearing on Thursday has no radio, no power steering, no power windows, no air-conditioning and one windshield wiper instead of two, according to suppliers and Tata’s own statements. Bucking prevailing habits, the car lacks a tachometer and uses an analog rather than digital speedometer,

Tablet buying advice?

I am planning on getting a tablet on EBAY I was wondering what people thought of this idea. The reason for this is that my MP3 player that I use a lot is dying. Also, I would like toplay around with a tablet and see what they are like. I was hopng to get a slightly older new or used tablet on EBAY. I don't want to pay any more then maybe 25 or 30 dollars. I know that sounds kind of low for a tablet, but I have seen some go for very low on EBAY. Thanks for any sugestions.

pulsejet night run

This is the simplest pulsejet you could make and costs only Rs.110 and has got a good throttling range, which you could see in the video..No need to strain much to start this engine it starts in a single attempt. this has really got good thrust, tried to show an cloth near it but i was not able to do it,so much of force from the exhaust pipe..one day i will hook it up to a scale and find out the real thrust.. note: at the end when i tried to show a cardboard the engine got few holes in the welded parts..

Too bad this ends so soon.

If I had another month, I was planning on making a nice instructable on how to make a good motorized bike, doing 150mpg, with 7 speeds, and a max speed of 80mph.. Although I don't think anybody will get up to that fast. You'll still be able to petal, and it's street legal (considered pedal assist) No welds required. The modification process can be dumbed down to a sheet of metal, hacksaw, and a drill. However, I'd recommend a sheer for cutting, but that's just me. The total cost of the project would be a bike, plus $200 in parts, plus $200 for the engine. Maybe I'll submit it to the green one instead, 150mpg is pretty good. That is if I get all the parts and have the time to put it together, plus do a write up.

successful 5th pulsejet

Hello everybody,i think you all remember me "the pulsejet guy" atlast made my fifth successful pulsejet engine after doing some research on the design. so you all remember that i made this engine before. http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1109952/21062011199.jpg the above engine is a 4 inch dia engine,so now with the same dia i made a highly tuned chinese type which produces more thrust when compared to the previous design..At first i failed at starting then i made some changes in the tailpipe and got it running successfully.. here is the engine. http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1109955/23072011291.jpg And the sound produced in this engine is comparably high its annoying annoying irritating ear bleeding and produces high vibrations..so should be little careful wit your ears.. and finally here is the video take a look at it..see you all in next pulsejet video,a bigger one..

55pounds thermojet

Now my aim is to fix the engine(55pounds) to the tricycle(designed by me) and drive it to accomplish my dream.. here is the way how i designed the engine, after a deep research on the acoustic resonance taking place inside the engine i was able to tune the engine in such a way that it produces 40 pounds thrust then after adding an augmenter to it i was able to achieve 55pounds of thrust..This took me some 2days to design the engine.. special features:- the engine is hollow with no moving parts and produces an thrust of 55pounds which is capable of pushing a man of 70kg+kart+20kg gas cylinder..The main advantage of my design is the TSFC(total specific fuel consumption) is reduced when compared to other designs..this has got an excellent air fuel mixing capability.. here are some pictures drawn by me about the engine..   http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1118963/view1.jpg http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1118965/view2.jpg

I'm poor, have no special tools or skills, but I love steampunk. Anything cool I can make without denting my wallet? :/

I have loved steampunk style for a while now, as well as costume design (since I am an anime fan too), but I've only recently decided to jump in on all the fun. However, despite my age and interest, I have no skills in design, save for plushies I make for spare change, and I have no special tools or equipment. On top of that, I'm seriously pretty damn poor--as in I pay no tuition at college at ALL, because they pity me that damn much...So, is there anything out there I can make that won't leave my family starving on the street, requires no special tools or equipment, little experience, but still looks completely amazing? The only thing I've seen like this before are Greensteam's goggles... :/
