Instant MPG gauge for OBDII

This is very simple. I want to know how to make a simple (& cheap) instant MPG meter for a vehicle fitted with OBDII (i.e. most recent vehicles) that will plug into the OBDII port.

Ebony & Ivory - Devil May Cry Guns

This was my first commissioned prop build as a favour for a friend of a friend. All in all they cost about £15 in materials and took a total of 42 hours to conceive and build (abit longer that expected).  It was made on the base of a cheap toy gun which had to be modified and was then built upon with wood, paper mache, plastic and MDF. There are further step by step photos on my props blog.  I hope you like them.

Human Detector

I'm trying to come up with a small, cheap, simple circuit that will detect a human. I plan to use a grid of luxeon rebel OLEDs and whatever detector I come up with embedded in my ceiling to light up only when you are under them. I've looked into passive infrared, but it's fairly expensive for the components I could find. Any leads for circuits, ideas, or parts? I'd use parts from cheap security lights, but they tend to be around $10 each and I would probably need around12-18 ... kinda painful on the pocketbook. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheap and Easy Futon Frame

Hi all! I have been scouring the web for easy, simple futon frame building instructions and plans and I have not come up with anything!  If any of you would feel so inclined to try something simple that's made out of  say plywood, not slats and can be made by an amatuer woodcraftsmen, PLEASE SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE:)  I'm up for anything, it doesn't have to look traditional or anything, just as long as it can fold into a bed.  We need to build it for our boys to sleep on, but be able to put it up during the day. Thanks in advance!

Cheap DIY space savers.

So I'm in the middle of converting part of our basement into a new room to serve as my room.I'm looking for a way to make the most out of my space. My first ideas were utilizing a drawbridge style system to make a foldout table or something like that. the ceiling is entirely exposed. There are cords and beams and pipes everywhere up there.I thought perhaps some sort of drop down storage could be made. This is all I have come up with so far.I'm not too keen with drawbridges,so any help and ideas would be appreciated. the picture is me at age 15 .it shows part of the basement. Not much help. The furnace is behind the door. The door that we have sitting here for no apparent reason. Note: there is large closet already built in against the wall. That should store all the clothes I'll ever need.I'm thinking of purchasing a cheap futon for a bed,as the mattress I currently use is far too big.Does anyone know where I can find some blueprints for simple foldout tables.

Cheap calculator hack

I put together a Solarbiotics Magbot Pendulum and it has a period of one second. I measured this by using a stopwatch and counting the swings for five minutes. . What I would like to do is count the number of times it swings back and forth over an extended period of time, for example 24 hours.   I came across an article showing how to use a cheap calculator to count the number of turns a shaft makes. A cam attached to the shaft presses the "+" key each time the shaft turns one full turn. to use it, you clear the calculator and press the "1" button. Then every turn the cam presses the "+" button and 1 is added to the sum being displayed. Every cycle of the pendulum causes the LED to flash (pulse)  once. I'd like to use these pulses to do the electronic equivalent of pressing the "+" button.  It might be possible to count these pulses using electronic circuitry (decade counters) but electronic calculators only cost about a dollar of two and I'd like to give that a try. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheap 3D printing company?

Hi, I would like to get a 3D print of a model I made. I've heard a lot of good things about Ponoko. I exported my file from SketchUp to a Collada file(*.dae), and then uploaded it to ponoko.com. I selected the material, and this is what I found out: It would cost me $200 for a 3-inch cube, with the cheapest material(durable plastic)!!! Does anyone else know of somewhere where I can buy reasonably-priced 3D objects that I design(<$70 USD)? I'm not worried about shipping time, as long as i get it within a month.

Free idea: Umbrella Sword!

I had this idea today, after the first rain of the year. It would be simple, really. Use a cheap umbrella and halloween prop sword for a cheap one, or get a really nice umbrella and a real sword handle to go like a sir. I would love to see this done, but don't have the resources at this point (starving college student). Someone make this and they get a patch or maybe a pro membership. Just cite my idea in the Instructable and let me know when it's published. If no one makes one, I will for sure later when I get the materials.

Tethered SD card

I would like to tether a cheap digital camera. The problem is I don't know which one - I'm watching on ebay for a madly cheap camera (I've seen loads go where they're fine except for a stuck zoom - like 6Mp cameras for about £3 - when every time I've looked at a stuck zoom a bit of twisting and brute force will get it back in to the body - and the project I want it for doesn't need to zoom!). Problem with doing this is that by the time I've found a cheap camera with 2 minutes to go, it tends to take a lot longer to that to figure out whether you can tether it. And even then you're normally limited to the provided software, I'd like to be able to write my own. So - can anyone think of a way to take an old SD card and somehow - I don't know - solder wires to the insides of the contacts maybe - and then somehow get those wires into another old SD card and plug it into the card-reader attached to a PC so that you can read the images without unplugging the "card" from the camera?

Cheap Arduino Drone Project

Hi there  :)  , Right now, I am busy on a project, called "The HoboDrone" to make a cheap ass drone. It is my intention to make a DIY guide for everyone. The next problem that need to be solved right now in my project, is to process all information that comes and goes through this drone, through the Arduino. My question is if it's possible that an Arduino handles next tasks/can deliver enough CPU-power for: - Reading the sensors - Run the code to stabilize the drone - Control the electromotors (output from stabilizing code) - Get input through RC-signals and control the electomotors I did not start writing the code for stabilizing the drone, but there are plenty of examples out there, like the bluecopter: https://github.com/baselsw/BlueCopter (This code doesn't deal with RC-input from a controller on the ground) I have read a similar DIY project which used a Raspberry Pi, which took care of a part of the code. (https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Drone-Pi/) Is it possible to only use an Arduino in a Drone, or should I work in the direction of a coöperation between an Arduino and Raspberry Pi ? Thanks in advance!

Looking for cheap LiPo 3s low voltagle cutoof/balance circuit

Looking to add portability to a boombox project I built. Want to just grab a LiPo r/c pack and use a 3a 12v SMPS to charge it with. Know of a good battery protection circuit? This will be going to a non tech minded friend. So I'd like him to just be able to plug in the PSU when he is home without the worry of overcharging and be able to run it until the low voltage cut off is hit without worrying about killing the batteries. Any suggestions? It would be for this https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Boombox-Ghettoblaster/ Thanks

Google Sketchup: Fill unseen space?

I'm trying to get a cheap 3D print of a model(<$100 with S&H;). But one problem is that the walls are infinitely thin, so I need to fill the space between them. But how do I do this? The main problem is the boxes all around the surface(look at the uploaded model). They need to be filled, without the internal space where the flashdrive goes being filled. Can someone please tell me how to do this, and also a cheap 3D printing service?  Cheapest I have seen was i.materialise. The price for the model: $36. Not bad at all. The price of shipping: $144. I'm not going to spend almost $200 on a case for a flashdrive.

Experiment : Double Slit

Hi !I tried to reproduce the Double-Slit experiment with a cheap red laser-diode (<1mW).Below are various results obtained from some variations of the experiment ... (with a double slit, with a pinhole, with a thin wire, and with a hair (and also with a single slit who gave almost the same result than with a hair))I also tried to reproduce it with an other source of light (and got electrocuted). But so far, I'm not satisfied by the results I obtained with the light bulb, and I failed with the sun.Do you have some experience to share about this experiment ?Do you have successfully reproduced it with an other source of light than a cheap laser diode ?

Cheap Under Deck Ceiling - Looking for details, anyone done this?

I'm 'fixing to get ready' to build this under my deck http://www.familyhandyman.com/decks/building-a-deck/under-deck-roof/view-all  to cover a 16' wide x 12' long space under my deck.  It looks simple enough, and there are a couple of YouTube videos of the same thing, but they all leave out some detail.Has anyone here done one of these? I think it needs flashing at the house end so water isn't weeping down the siding. Any other tips or tricks you found ? Thank you. ! Terry, Council Bluffs, Iowa

Potential $5 RC Hovercraft

Hey y'all, I was bored, so I made this RC hovercraft, kinda like a Tiny Whoov, from the guts of a $5 RC helicopter (sold at most FiveBelows). The idea is that a hovercraft is more fun than a cruddy helicopter, in addition to being a fun and easy DIY project for the weekend. It could be a nice gift to a kid. My first concern was that the motors would not provide enough power to get the thing moving. They give more than enough power, and this thing can MOVE. My second concern is that the differential thrust steering system (one motor turns faster than the other, steering the hovercraft) would not be effective enough. This is still a problem that I don't have the enthusiasm or time to solve anymore. Maybe someone could figure out how to reprogram the FC board to have more differential thrust (is that possible?), or somehow configure a servo or actuator without raising the cost of materials too much. Anyway, here's the concept, go have fun with it.Supplies:Foam platesHot glue$5 RC helicopter with 2 motors and receiver (LED optional, but really cool)Connector (the battery might be soldered directly to the FC board, so this will make it easier to fiddle with)Soldering iron (not %100 necessary, but it can come in handy)Propellers (see design notes)Design notes:Notice how the underside of the hull is curved and smooth. I used propellers from a Blade Inductrix FPV Pro, but any micro quad propellers should work. Notice the nice little compartment under the FC board where you can stick a battery without the need for Velcro or glue. This would be a very easy FPV mod, but that would add about $20 to the cost.
