Kinzo (Dremel clone tool chuck)

Chuck Messer of Tackle Design and The Open Prosthetics Project on Smash Lab

I finally got a chance to watch the sneak preview of Discovery's new Smash Lab* last night, and imagine my surprise to see someone I know hosting! Chuck Messer, one of the four Smash Lab hosts, is a partner at Tackle Design the people behind the The Open Prosthetics Project, which also has an Open Prosthetics group on Instructables. Tackle Design and my own Squid Labs shared many similarities, so Chuck and I would share stories about how we each ran the companies; he even managed to visit Squid Labs when we were still located in Emeryville (pre-control tower). DIY Mini Drill Machine

Hi everybody! I have bought a mini drill chuck from banggoog.com. But unfortunately it's hole is smalle than my DC motor. i don't even know the motor I have is 12v or 6v but i have ran this motor on 12v but i didnt burnt. its tip is bigger than my drill chuck. Any ideas how I can fix this?

oil press

Automatic LED light for cordless drill?

As far as I know, DeWalt has not incorporated lights into their cordless drills as some other manufacturers have.  Could someone make an LED light which would come on when the magnetic field produced by the drill motor is sensed?  Perhaps a sensor taped to the drill body, and a small LED light pointing forward, or a ring of light around the drill chuck?

Seems it is possible to blow an amp

Well, apparently something is wrong with my sub amp, not the sub itself, at least it doesn't sound blown to me. But it definatly does sound different than last time I used it and there is a slight growling sound you can barely hear if you turn it up to a certain point, almost like the voice coil rubbing but a softer sound as I do know what that sounds like. Time to chuck the amp eh?

Aerosol Flamethrower

I've searched almost all words associated with "Aerosol flamethrower" on instructables, yet I see nothing of the sort. Where I come from in England, they're very common, has anyone else ever made one and would the subject be to easy to make a whole instructable out of it. (even if other ways of using them were included?)-=EDIT=-I've established it IS a bad idea, but also just to clarify:~Spray~ can flamethrowers will NOT randomly blow up unless (to my knowledge)You hold it the flame so it burn the nozzle.You pierce the valve.You douse it in and light or chuck it in a fire.

A collaborative literary experiment that you can contribute to

This weekend Eureka! Factory and the Hive makerspace at Tampa's John F. Germany library will be participating in the Deconstruction hackathon. Our project this year is a literary hack. We are asking for random sentences from the imaginations of the general public. We will collect sentences from now until 7PM EST on Saturday, November 15th. We will spend the following 24 hours wrangling the collected contributions into some kind of narrative form. It will be a fun experiment. Boombox Bluetooth mods

I have a JVC RV-NB1 Kaboom Series Boombox and want to mod it with a "Decoder Board USB/TF/ Reader IR Remote Bluetooth/FM Audio Board Module MP3". "Bluetoothing" this box is easy but installing this module involves a bit more ie. usb, TF slot, aux, FM. IR for remote any ideas as to connecting the rest. I can't seem to find a schematic from JVC. It has an FM tuner and can decode mp3,WAV,CDA,FLAC. CD's.Plus I want to add either a LiPo 4200mAh battery or a transformer for charging the module.any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Chuck Reed

I Found a Book that wasn't lost...

A lot of people walk past our house, often after spending a little too long in the pub. We also get a lot of kids passing to and from school.So the occasional piece of litter in the front garden isn't unusual.Today it was - I found a book. Whole, intact, and deliberately dumped in my garden.It wasn't chucked away by an annoyed kid, or dropped by an unusually literate drunk, it was "released".It seems there is a whole community of politely-subversive book-lovers out there, determined to sneak their love onto others. They leave books in unusual, public places for others to find, read and pass on the same way. Treetop Ornament Mover/Squirrel Ski Lift/Aerial Transporter

Not sure where this should go, exactly, feel free to recommend.  Last year, for a Christmas lawn decoration, we wanted to have some plywood "gifts" delivered across the lawn. Combined with Santasaurus Rex and his Reindingos, we came up with the following: (embedding not working out for me, link here) We used 20" bicycle wheels held horizontally, supported entirely from above, and ended up using the cheapest electric drill from home depot, with a wheel chucked up, to friction drive one of the bike wheels. This worked, but it was very loud, and the setup from last year was mostly destroyed when we took it all out of the trees.  I'd really like to take another shot at moving ornaments, and the drive end is the biggest hangup. Does anyone have a suggestion on doing something similar?

Bunk Beds Dangerous for Kids, Hopefully Safe for Interns

A new report shows that bunk beds may be pretty dangerous things that can lead to broken toes, bloody noses, ceiling fan entanglement (!), falls, strangulation and more fun things. Thinking back on my own experience growing up on the top bunk as a kid and in school dorms, I think I can claim about three of those injuries. But it was fun and sometimes we combined the injuries like the time I pushed a kid off the top of a bunk (an accident, I swear) and as he was falling off he chucked a plastic squirt gun and nailed me in the forehead making me bleed all over the place.He landed on a cushion and I proudly went to the hospital. Good times.Well, here at Instructables HQ we have our own bunkbeds for interns and visitors and so far there have been no accidents. But, as this study from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio seems to say, it's only a matter of time before we add to the 36,000 reported injuries a year. Link

Quick question

Hi, I need help. You see the street I live in has more cats than, well the musical cats,  and seeing as my garden seems to be they're preferred  choice for going to the toilet, I decided to build a motion sensing water sprayer. So off to Amazon I went and purchased some PIR sensors, a solar pump with a DC connection, bread boards wires and batteries and chucked it all together. Now the sensor will light an LED no problem but when I switch in the pump I get nothing. I read on tinternet that transistors can be used to up the juice but I was already far beyond my knowledge of circuits, components and the like. I even tried looking at sketches of PIR sensors to transistors, but after weeks of trying I'm no closer and have nothing to show for it but a headache.  If anyone can help and describe to me (in child like, basic terminology) how I wire up a transistor to a PIR and then a 4-12v 3.5watt pump that would be just super.  Or at-least put me out of my misery and tell me it's not doable.  Thanks.

Light sensitive/remote pet door battery powered

Hi all i have scoured the site but cant seem to find a project that i need, and would therefore benefit from any help and advice on how to build an light sensitive automatic door opener for our chicken coop. it seems an obvious project to me,, hopefully one not too hard that i can do with your help. we have a barn thats too far away from the electricity, so it needs to be self powered by battery. i can look into trickle carging the battery by solar seperatley i am sure on the site. but, the wife is sick of having to go each night and shut the chucks in to keep them safe from the fox, and then open up every morning. we were wondering if we could use a standard light sensor you find on the cheap security lights at the DIY store, that would trigger some kind of motor or catch etc to slide or raise a door. then if possible, to do the opposite when the morning comes. if the LUX sensor is not possible, then maybe on a timer, or even posibly remote. i need help and advice on the whole thing, as i have no idea on what type of mote, (if i need a motor at all) i need, will it burn out if it has power all the time?, how to stop it? loads of questions i cant even think of support with your answer would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Contest eligibility by date

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I would like to propose a change to contest rules. I'm proposing that the eligibility requirement to enter contests be changed to allow any instructable published within a specified time period (one week, one month, etc) before the contest opens. I know the point of limiting the eligibility is to keep fresh material flowing through the door by keeping old 'ibles from being entered over and over, but this is the second time that I've published an instructable, and then a few days later a contest opens that I'm not eligible to enter. This time, the contest in question is https://www.instructables.com/contest/fixit2014/ which opened on Sept 1. I wanted to enter this 'ible (https://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Disassemble-A-Keyless-Drill-Chuck/) which I published on Aug 29...but it's not eligible because it was published before the contest opened.  I know there's a list of upcoming contests, but the point of this site is to share your projects, not to withhold them until a contest rolls around that you may want to enter. I try to contribute as much as possible, so far publishing 18 instructables in the last 10 months. Seven of those were featured. While I doubt that I'll win any of the contests, it's frustrating not even getting a chance to enter....so, if there's a way this change could be considered, that'd be great - otherwise I'll live with it. Like I said, I doubt I'd win any contests anyway. Thanks for reading my rant.

Yellow Fever

I'm peturbed, even that more at the quick flagging response, yet no help to my situation, regardless I'll ignore that. My mirage panel amp uses IRF640 mosfet transistors, and I did something to it in the process of trying to take an amperage reading with my multimeter between the two energized heatsinks (theres two mosfets for a mono output), after the big FLASH BANG, I pulled it apart after ripping the cord out of the wall. The only damage I can find is a small black pit that the spark made in the metal heatsink (actually it was pretty deep for a spark pit). I've checked the mosfet transistors, included cleaning the MASSIVE amount of ceramic thermal paste they smeared on there with some rubbing alch to get a nice clean surface on the heat sink and transistor. By the way, would arctic silver be a good substitute for the crap paste they put on there? They're designed to make contact with the heatsink anyways so I don't see why silver thermal paste would hurt it. But besides all that, I can't find any brown spots on the PCB or any bulging capacitors (there's only two main power caps), did I perhaps just flip some kind of internal circuit breaker built into the circuit as a whole, not just as a single device I can see? I'm wondering if I should just chuck it instead of putting it back together and plugging it back in to be greeted with another spark, although it didn't smoke or anything while it was plugged in after the spark, but I got a quiet humming sound on the sub and the music stopped coming through. Again, maybe I blew some kind of breaker? Oh and I know it's my fault guys, so don't be rubbing that in my face, I come here only for help and not to be a nuisance.

electronic/mechanical/ LED-Radio-Decoder Wedding rings?

Hey there,my future wife and I are looking for some fancy wedding rings. Well, we're both geeks, so it should be something that involves electricity or a nifty function ;-)Unfortunaly she's allergic to some metal components often used in steel or gold/silver, so titan or something like that would be more suitable. Aluminum or some plastics would work too, i guess.Thats the problem right there. Project VR6

Hello all, thought id share my progress of my 97' VW Golf mk3 VR6 2.8 to create some discussion and VAG banter. I brought her completly standard and wanted to build a real sleeper for road use and track use that is fast, practical for everyday use and safe for the family. When I got her back in 2009 she was a standard vr6 nothing really special just a well looked after example Firstly I gave her a good clean inside and out along with a service.......and by clean i mean really cleaning, shampoo the carpet, treat the leather, clean out the heater units, remove and shampoo the roof lining, polish and resin the paint, de greese and steam clean the engine bay to name some of the bits ive done. The result was a very clean base "template" Once all was clean and I could see areas for imporvement I began the work, replacing all the bushes, front and rear lower arms, brake lines, discs, calipers, exhaust were the easy steps When it came to the engine itself I did not want to mess about with it too much just improve the BHP and general running of the car as 174bhp from a 2.8 VR6 is shocking. So removed the engine and re conditioned the gearbox and clutch. While this was out I thought it best to also do the pull chain not a big job but much easier with everything out, once back in I still was not finished.... After giving the engine a full service with new plugs, leads, coil pack, oil change, rocker cover, inlet manifold, seals, upgraded air filter I decided to get the car chipped to see what BHP could be pulled out of her. Happy to say with all that work she was running on the first dyno 192bhp a massive improvement from standard 174bhp and all that from just replacing and upgrading some standard old parts with more expensive performance parts. Once the Chip was installed and the guys at the tuning store had done their works she was happily chucking out 216.4BHP With that I was more than happy and the work put in over the 6month period really showed. I then decided to have all but bumpers colour coded and did a few minor tweeks to the exterious to make her a clean standard example... I will add a full list of specs and work done soon, enjoy the pics feedback welcome

When you forget your homework, it's nice to add some humor to the situation and make the teacher laugh (hopefully).  Here are some excuses I came up with: "It fell into the Twilight Zone!" Hack your Servo V1.00: Make a powerful linear actuator using a standard hobby Servo

Hack your Servo V1.00: Make a powerful linear actuator using a standard hobby Servo   Provided you have the tools and the servo you can built this for under a couple of bucks. The actuator extends with a rate of about 50mm/min. It is rather slow but very powerful. Watch my video at the end of the post where the small actuator lifts 10kg vertically.   Materials List Tools list   - hobby servo - standard hobby brass tubing             -OD: 4.0mm, ID: 3.4mm             -OD: 5.8mm, ID: 4.5mm - standard hobby styrene tubing                                                 -OD: 4.8mm, ID: 3.5mm - M4 studding - 2 x M5 washers - 2 x M4 nuts - 5 minute epoxy - cyanoacrylate - grease - multi-strand cables - heat-shrink tubing   - standard tools – screwdrivers, scalpel, files etc. - dremmel multi-tool with ceramic abrasive disk, or similar - hand-drill + 4.9mm + 2.5mm drill-bits - M3 tap - M4 tap - soldering iron - glue gun - small vice - small saw - sanding paper (relatively fine) - small flame torch         http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/material_tools.jpg Procedure - I will be giving instructions based on the dimensional parameters of the Hitec HS-300. The procedure remains the same for any type servo. I strongly recommend you read the whole post before you start. So lets make a start, shall we?   - Open your hobby servo, remove control electronics, feedback potentiometer and mechanical stop on the servo’s output gear.   - Solder new cables on the servo motor’s leads.   - Drill two 4.9mm holes on the servo case bottom cover. These should be located longitudinally along the centre line and 9.5 mm from each end (this applies on the Hitec HS-300 and is also true for many standard servos but depending on your servo type there might be differences). The M4 thread will come out from the servo body using one of these two so this hole must be located directly below the centre of rotation of the servo’s output gear. Be very careful since this alignment is very important! If you don’t get it right you might have to use a new servo! The more accurate you are, the longer your servo will endure.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/bottomCover_potHead.jpg -  Measure the dimensions of the rotating shaft of the potentiometer on the servo’s original electronics – note the geometry in general. The shaft should be flattened right at the tip in order to prevent it from freely-rotating once inserted into the servo’s output gear.   - Take the M4 studding (M4 thread) pick one end and by using the dremmel and the abrasive wheel tool, replicate the tip of the servo’s potentiometer on that end. Start by decreasing the diameter of the thread, rotating it steadily by hand against the abrasive disk (normally to 3.5mm in diameter and at least 6mm in length). Try to think of your fingers as the chuck of a slow-turning lathe. Once the diameter of the thread is down to the pot’s shaft diameter, flatten the tip according to the potentiometer’s tip. The idea is that the thread must be inserted in the servo’s output gear in the same way the potentiometer did before. The better the fit the longer your servo will endure.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/thread_modofication.jpg - On the flat tip of the M4 thread, screw the two M4 nuts approximately 20mm down its length. Following that, insert the two M5 washers. - Insert the thread inside the servo and adjust the distance of the nuts and washers down the thread such that the servo case bottom cover closes properly and the motor rotates efficiently. Basically, you have to make sure that once the thread and the servo are assembled there is no pressure between the servo case bottom cover and the nut-washer assembly. Similarly, you have to make sure that once the thread and the servo are assembled there is no gap between the servo case bottom cover and the nut-washer assembly. Once again, the better the fit the more your linear actuator will endure.   - Once you find the optimum position carefully disassemble the servo, remove the washers from the thread and use a drop of cyanoacrylate on the side of the nut that was in contact with the washers in the assembly. Let the glue to settle for 5 minutes. Unscrew the second nut by 10mm towards the flat end of the thread, and prepare a small epoxy mix.   - Put the mix between the two nuts and screw the second nut back in place. Once in place also use some epoxy on the back of the second nut as well. Ideally you should sand all contacting areas before you apply the epoxy glue. Leave to settle for at least 6 hours (even if you use a 5 min epoxy).     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/copper_thread.jpg - Secure tightly the 4mm diameter brass tube onto a vice by flattening the mounting end and use the M4 tap VERY carefully tapping as deep as possible (at least 15mm). Using the dremmel cut 10mm out of the threaded part of the tube and then verify that the created thread runs along the whole length of the small threaded tube by screwing it onto an M4 screw. Keep the 4mm threaded tube on the screw for handling purposes. Apply a layer of solder on the outside surface.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/thread_solder.jpg - Take the 5.8mm diameter brass tube pick one end and try to sand at least 5mm into the tube (on the inside). Mount the brass tubing on the vice without squishing it and apply a thin layer of solder on the inside.   - Ignite the flame torch, take the 4mm threaded tube (holding it by the screw) and move it on the soldered end of the 5.8mm diameter brass tube which should still be mounted on the vice. Using the flame torch heat-up both tubes and carefully insert the 4mm threaded tubing inside the 5.8mm tubing until is fully inside. Use a pair of pliers and insert the brass tube by holding the end of the screw that sticks out. Hold the threaded tube levelled inside the 5.8mm tube until the solder settles. If you do not have a flame torch use a candle, your soldering iron and your patience :). Remove the screw. The end result will be the cylinder of your linear actuator.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/thread_cylinder.jpg - The cylinder length should be equal to: the actuator’s desired working length (stroke) + length of the 4mm threaded tube which is inside the 5.8mm tube + 10mm for the mounting hinge at the cylinder end.   - The thread length should be: the actuator’s desired working length (stroke) + length of threaded tube which is inside the 5.8mm tube + length of the thread which resides inside the servo casing, which is model-dependant.   - Take the non-threaded/non-soldered side of the cylinder and drill a 2.5mm hole through, 5mm from the tip.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/cylinder_heatShrink.jpg - Cover the entire length of the cylinder with heat-shrinking tube and cut-off any excess bits. The 2.5mm through holes made earlier on the non-threaded side of the cylinder are now covered. Use the drill again to expose them and tap them through, using the M3 tap. Screw a 20mm long M3 studding or simply cut-off the head of a 20mm long M3 screw. This will act as your cylinder mounting hinge.   - Take the 4.8mm styrene tubing and M4 tap it 10mm deep. Cut a small ring 5mm in length and screw it in the M4 thread fully, from the side of the nut that was in contact with the washers (long side of the M4 thread). This will act as bushing between the thread and the servo’s case bottom cover. Ideally you should use nylon, copper or metal bushing.     http://www.01mech.com/sites/default/files/images/thread_servo.jpg - Secure the motor cables inside the servo casing using a glue-gun and use heat-shrinking tube to cover them. Assemble the servo including the thread, the styrene bushing and the washers.   - Screw-on the cylinder and you are good to go! Here is a video of the small actuator lifting 10kg For those of you that have watched my video on the MTR Rover     will understand where the idea of hacking the servo came from ;))   Soon we will be posting assembly instructions, code and schematics on how to modify a standard servo to get full PID speed and position control with 10-bit resolution over 360 degrees – continuous ;)     I look forward for your comments!
