question on clay

Recently I descovered my property has a lot of clay soil deposits, with that said how would I use that to make clay jars, pots, cruiclibles? And I have lots od sand, so exactly I know you mix the soil, sand and water but I dont know in what order or fashion so some websites might help. with this I am planning to make a clay crucible for forging, and an oven while I'm at it. Thanks

Difference between Paper Clay and Polymer Clay

Hello! I'm going to try and make a clay sculpture of my business logo. I'm unsure what to use, Polymer clay or Paper clay? I'm not really sure what is the difference because I'm used to thinking they both make excellent pieces and their baking time depends on their manufacturer. What do you suggest? I use for this project and future projects? Terresa Waz, Newbie clay sculptor http://www.chicagocomputerclasses.com/excel-classes/

Help! CLAI - Clay Animation Video Game

So I made a trailer for a new video game I'm working on called CLAI. But taking each picture and individually editing the blue out is going to be hard. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to make the filming of the sprites easier? Is there some nice software I can use? In any case, enjoy the video: -Bilal Ghalib

Clay Contest Criteria

I have a question about the Clay contest criteria....debating whether to do an instructable for a DIY downdraft kiln vent for under $50 (cf $450-600 to buy) that I built. I've actually been waiting for the clay contest before publishing, however the contest criteria says:  "For the purpose of this contest, any project that uses a moldable, malleable, clay-like product will be eligible." So question is, would a kiln vent be eligible? Previous contest criteria has been "all things" related to said topic, but this seems more narrow in scope. Obviously a kiln vent is not made with clay, but it certainly fits the pottery topic. What to the contest gurus say?

Problems with delft clay casting

Hi. I'm pretty new to delft clay casting. I make my models out of sculpey clay.2 problems I'm having: 1: sometimes the clay sticks to the model in the fine details (small letters, curves, etc) 2: takes SEVERAL attempts to get a good pour to fill the mold. I'm making several air holes and a pretty good size pour gate/channel. Any advice? Thanks

polymer clay and acrylic paint instructable

Recently after looking at a few pages on deviant art i have really gotten interested in polymer clay and acrylic paint, i would like to try and make a few charms based off of items in anime, games and what not but all the tutorials i have read online don't really help me without pictures, and i though that if anyone uses polymer clay and acrylic and is apart of the instructables community would they kindly make an instructable on it. I know an instructable on using polymer clay would be good for the community seeing as how i couldn't find on on here already and i would apreciate it greatly

Are there other ways to harden earth clays? Answered

I do not have access to a kiln nor do i have the money to buy one. Are there other ways to harden the clay that will make it as hard or nearly as hard as a kiln would? I thought air drying would make it resonably hard, but nope it shatters WAY TOO easily. EDIT: I should have noted that I live in the heart of LA in an apartment so I can't really make a kiln, but it seeming like i need to kiln it or buy some oven clay(I forogt the name)

What's the easiest way to repair the exterior of a clay chimney liner that is beginning to deteriorate?

The portion of my clay chimney liner theat protrudes above the main (brick) chimney is beginning to show signs of damage on the exterior, north side, where the clay looks to be friable in spots, such that clay chips could probably be easily broken away from the exterior surface.  Is there a good repair material available to fix this problem?

How can I solidify a papercraft?

I want to make some props, and I've stumbled upon the idea of papercraft. Now I'm thinking of making it solid, only using paper as the substrate. I think I should simply cover it in clay, but I figure the Instructables community probably has some tricks up their sleeves. So. Anybody have some nifty tricks, or better materials to use to make a papercraft real sturdy? Maybe even making some costume armor :D Hope I can get into the prop-making/cosplay community!

What happened to the Play with Clay Challenge?

So, awhile ago I got the instructables authors newsletter, and they showed a schedule of upcoming contests. I haven't seen anything about it. I just got home from vacation, so I'm still catching up on everything. I might be a little fuzzy still..

After I build a table of plaster to reuse and wedge my clay on, how do I attach a wire to cut the clay?

In the past I've seen plaster tables used to dry and wedge clay on. Most of them have had a metal pipe attached on the corner. At the top of this pipe there is a piano wire. The other end of the wire is attached to the table, so It is strung tightly at an angle. I'm not sure how to attach the pipe to the table and the wire to the pipe. It must be very sturdy. Thanks for your help.

Can I be eligible to win then?
