Motor Acquisition....

I have recently come into possession of a working vacuum cleaner motor (generic: only says 60 hz, 120 V on the side) with cord and switch still attached (also the fins on the motor that created the suction). I can't even find a manufacturer logo on it. Anyways...I am looking forward to using this in a future project. Just as an exercise, in case I am "thinking too small" what would you do with such a motor? It looks a LOT like this one:

Swimming pool cleaner/filter

Hello, I have an old (about 50 years) 50.000 liters (13 208.6026 US gallons) swimming poll that doesn't have any kind of cleaning or filtering machinery (if you know what I mean) so it's just like buried water tank :). The problem is that it's often filled with grass, leaves and bugs that sink to the bottom of the pool and I don't know how to get rid of them. I have a water pump that I use to empty the pool that takes about 2 liters/second that I'd like to use to "vacum" clean the pool floor but I don't really know how Any ideias? thanks!

Vibrobot - the logical extension.

We had a little rash of vibrobots, bristlebots and snailbots.Nobody thought of the logical extension, though - a vibrobot to clean the floor.a short video of the robot I made (my wife helped color him) out of an old electric razor, light switch, and paint pad thing... Apparently he's called Scuttle Bot. Second VideoThird VideoFourth Video, featuring attempted suicide (robocide?)

Does nobody modify vacuum cleaners?

Lately I've been looking for vacuum cleaner mods. I've done several Google searches and Instructables searches, and found only this one bag-to-bagless conversion. I expected there to be at least a handful of pages on vacuum cleaner modification on the Web. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to look?

Anyone use a Car air filter for home use?

Hello all~! An Idea just flew in my mind! Has anyone used or thought of using a Car air filter for home use? my primitive plan says a Car filter (My car's looks like a tunnel/Chimney) with a high CFM computer Fan mounted on top. The fan would be driven on 12v Adapter (or 9v for silence and life) and would suck air through the filter. The dust would then stick to the outside surfaces of the filter, which can be brushed off / Vacumed later. Any Pros/ Cons/ Ideas? Jump in! People!

Vacuum cleaner as wood dust collection?

I was wondering if it is possible to use a vacuum cleaner as a form on wood dust collection in my workshop. What type of vacuum clearer would be the best for this, one with a bag, bagless, whatever. If this is possible, what precautions should be taken to ensure smooth operation of this setup. I'm worried about wood dust possibly clogging up the vacuum cleaner. Any help/ more info/ ideas/ would be great.

Kid climbs walls with vacuum cleaners

A boy in the UK uses a couple of vacuum cleaners to climb walls like Spiderman. It's an amazing thing for a 13 year-old to do and... wait a second. This is just a copy of something that was demonstrated on TV in the UK well before this. So let's start over. A boy in the UK shows that you can get some media attention for doing a recreation of something that's already been established as amazing, even in the same country. Pretty shameless. Regarding brush cleaners spasifically Poly Clens

Recently me and my dad have run across a problem.;=200 Apparently our government has banned the use of Poly Clens By Lepage brand here in Ontario Canada as far as I know. Its a favorite brush cleaner for the both of us and we're both surprised when we heard the news not to mention disappointed.  We both don't understand why its banned since there are far worse brush cleaning methods that are way more harmful to the environment. So are there any other alternatives that some one could recommend that are similar? And please don't recommend varsol est since these just don't compare and are just nasty. Thanks. :)

A "Greener, cleaner, quieter, smarter" giant in the sky.

.An Airbus A380 flew this Friday from Filton, near Bristol, UK, experimenting a new synthetic fuel : a GTL (Gas To Liquid) based fuel. This new synthetic fuel, which emits less pollutants, is intended to replace kerosene."Greener, cleaner, quieter, smarter" is the motto we could read on the fuselage of this giant of the sky.Airbus is planning a first flight 100% powered by bio-fuels in 2009.'s hope Boeing will take it as a challenge, so we will compete to make the "Greenest, cleanest, quietest and smartest" planes ... ! =o)

Big Capacitors

I found a big capacitor in a floor cleaner...I think. It is a black cylinder with two leads off the end. In the floor cleaner, it was hooked up to a lot of stuff in a really important looking box that had a lot of wires flying everywhere. It looks sort of like the thing below, but a little smaller. So, really, there are two questions: 1. Is it a capacitor? 2. If it is, what can I do with it? Thank you!

English Spiderman climbs walls with vacuum cleaner

Jem Stansfield is a great guy. He cobbles together a Spiderman suit with some vacuum cleaners and climbs the outsides of buildings with it. That's just awesome. From the article: "I hope activities like this teach children that if you understand the world around you, you can make it work for you," he said. "Normal boring day-to-day objects can do exciting things for you." This dude is my new hero. And it gets better. His future plans involve driving a car powered by coffee beans. He's like an alternate universe version of Tim Anderson. The first video covers the making of the gloves and the second is a climb up the outside of a building. Link via gizmodo

is there anything worthwhile inside an old electrolux vaccuum. cleaner

Helped clean out an apartment and took a couple items home. The electrolux was going to be thrown out, so i took it, now i realize i don't have the room for another vacuum cleaner, it came in a box with all the accessories. the box is big 28x17 inches, i really wish they had changed to metric when i was in 3 or 4th grade and it was a big topic. i go crazy buying SAE bolts and their sized. so anything inside the vac worth liberating, i heard it works, i haven't tried it, i was hoping it was an electrolux with that end piece that i have seen sculptures or steam punk stuff out of

Maker Day: Special Build Day with LEDs

The San Rafael Intel Computer Clubhouse hosted a Maker Day after receiving the LED Build Night materials from Instructables.  We invited our youth members and their families to join us in making and playing with LEDs!   Some of our participants were new to circuits so we focused mainly on paper circuits.   However, in the spirit of exploration and experimentation, some members began building creatures with pipe cleaners, adding LED eyes and such.   And parents got inspired from a Makezine project and started making pipe cleaner jewelry with LEDs and binder clips! Check out how to make your own LED Pipe Cleaner Bracelet.

iRobot Scholarship idea : Pool Cleaner

I've seen mods for the roombas before, where the robots are water sealed, and then the wheels are turned into propellers. My idea is that I could water proof the robot in plexi glass, or something, and then a net on it, to collect all the leaves, dead bugs, and other stuff that collects on the surface of a pool. normal pool cleaners only vacuum the floor of a pool, and it takes days for floating leaves and other grime to sink to the bottom. With a robot like this, I could just set it in the pool, and let it clean everything up. What's nice is, when company is coming over, it's embarrassing to have a dirty pool...this modification would allow you to quickly clean up your pool-even on short notice. Update (for some clarification): What I would want to do, is make a case for it, so that you can simply remove the wheels, and connect the propellers/steering device to where the wheels were, then just place the roomba in the watertight case, and it would be able to swim around and clean! Also, i'm working on some sketches of how it would work. I'll post those when they are done.

lawn mower wont run

Hi I have a Huskquavarna lawn mower I bought for $25 last year. The gas tank and carb were completely gummed up. I cleaned up the gas tank and rebuilt the carb and it ran fine all last summer, So this year I haul it out and put some gas in it won't run! The gas I put in it is kind of old but that never stopped it in the past. I know it has a good spark as when I spray a little carb cleaner in it fires right up,, until the "fuel" carb cleaner is used up. I cleaned up the carb (took it apart, blew it out, and cleaned it still it just5 wont suck the gas or what? Any suggestions?

Plasma Arc Waste Disposal

I was watching the local news earlier... and they started talking about a new waste plant being built in Ft. Pierce, Florida.Basically, they vaporize the trash and sewage sludge under a vacuum, and use the by product gases as fuel for the plant and power turbines. Steam is going to power a local juice plant. Solid by product (rocks and such) can be used for construction etc.On top of that, the by product gas - when burned - is cleaner than burning natural gas or garbage. Even if you think climate change is a myth, I think you can appreciate cleaner air to breath :P This plant is going to eat up the local landfills too :)I just thought it was pretty cool. This is the first plant in the United States and the third in the world (other two are in Japan and are much smaller).Comments?

I am having difficulties locating an IBLE I am sure I saw....

I just got another nice new vacuum cleaner motor from a clogged unit (motor is good, the other innards were not so good),  and I wanted to make the Soda Bottle hand vacuum I could have SWORN I saw somewhere in the ibles list awhile back.... 8 searches and two days and I am unable to find it (gee, I hope I saw it in here). Does anyone know which one or where it is?  I'd be most grateful. OK, it appears as though I am either remembering the KIT in Edmund's Scientifics  OR it is a project in one of my magazines, but not on line.   Thanks all anyways !

Most of the image may look a little cleaner, but it's those little mistakes that distort reality that make you wonder if anyone else looked at it.This new blog, Photoshop Disasters chronicles a few of these mistakes from the overly eager airbrush to the accidental deleting of heads. Seeking feedback on a unique vacuum accessory that can hold a mini flashlight!

Hi there! I believe this is the best place for me to ask this question. I just wanted to get your feedback or opinion on this cleaning accessory we are currently developing, the “Flashlight-Holder Vacuum Cleaner Attachment”. This product is a first-of-its-kind vacuum cleaner accessory that holds a flashlight, to provide light directly at the point of use. Please see this 4 minute video to see what this accessory is all about: The accessory holds a flashlight, to provide a hands-free beam of light exactly where it is needed. As someone who is engaged with cleaning services/ housekeeping or homemaking, would you consider using this kind of accessory? Or would you stick to what you are using right now? Your feedback will be very much appreciated. If you want to know more about the product, just visit Thanks

(sunday june 13, 2010. 23:46 pst) just happened to notice that if you update your profile picture it removes all previous viewable pictures (shown as thumbnails under your main profile pic) and replaces it with the most current selected. not sure if this is intended. I kind of liked seeing older pictures, but can see how this way is cleaner too.

ZnSe lens cleaning

At work we have a ZING laser knockoff and SOMEbody "accidentally" walked off aaaand it caught on fire. Almost everything has been tried to clean it, even putting it in acetone in the ultrasonic cleaner, and the lens is still crap. Short of buying a £75 replacement lens what inexpensive methods could be used to return it to a near-original state?

Convert an old canister vac to a harness/backpack vac?

Greetings Instructables Brethren! I've been getting along with all hardwood and no vacuum cleaner for 7 years now, and now with kids, I am admitting defeat, but still can't take that dreaded step into the spiral of ever-shortening planned obsolescence cycles for ever-more-expensive and flimsy junk. I'm looking for a way to turn an old Electrolux or other simple, repairable, and reliable antique canister vac, into a backpack vac. I wanted to do this Instructable myself, but between the 3 kids and being only armed with a dustmop and broom, I haven't got the time to do all the project development! Can someone out there with a few tools and a Monster Hacker / steampunk mentality, convert an old canister vac to a trusty Ghostbuster-style Backpack Duster? It will need a superlong cord, though most of those oldies-but-goodies did come with that.  And if you do this successfully, and can see fit to sell it on the Instructables Store, you probably have your first customer, right here!

So despite not always nice comments in the past I would like to shout out a big "THANK YOU GUYS!" to our code monkeys for closing the doors!

Why low quality stain odour remover don’t work well ?

Generally we don’t think about the quality stain odour remover for floor or a marble which can easily grab oil, grease, souse, blood  stains, and these type of stains not remove easily by the normal marble cleaner that’s why it's don’t work superior. So what you thing about that type of stain how to remove it easily with or without hard work?

WD40 The wonder spray, as it can be used for.....

I just finished looking at a post about why not to use WD40 or similar products on you pedal bike chain, and I agree with that, as WD40 t is not a lube, it is a cleaner and nut unsticking liquid. I also have heard of people using it as a drying agent to get water out of hard to reach places. WD40 can be used for other things of course, and I am curious as to how many things people use it for. I have used it as a tool cleaner in the past when I worked underground. One shift I found a 12" crescent wrench in a pile of mud. It was dirty, rusty and generally looked like poo. Interestingly if was the exact color of poo too. First I blasted it with compressed air to get the bulk of the mud and crusty rust off. Then I soaked it down with a can of WD40, and blasted it with air again. The improvement in appearance was amazing. The wrench now looked quite good. I repeated this 2 more times. I then oiled it and added it too my tool belt. That wench was better than the one I had on my belt. I used that technique on numerous tools and dirty machine parts after that. Next person with a novel use for WD40 please, and thank you. Zipperboy aka adventureboy7 aka Phil

Coanda effect VTOL or "hovercraft" - making a working model

I am currently working on the design of an impeller driven lifting device utilising the Coanda effect. My 3D printer is of course a great help here but only useful to test the vacuum cleaner assembly that I salvaged for the motor and impeller part. So far it is just I am interesting to see myself instead of reading it on the net but I was wondering if any RC model makers out here would be interested too? I have no clue about the available brushless motors and controllers or how much extra weight for electronics, batteries and so on but could provide the 3D files and design tips if anyone would dare to create a working RC model. Unlike all the designs on Youtube no propeller is used for the lift! Those designs might still use the Coanda effect, or better adjust it's airflow, for the steering but the actual lift comes from a prop. An impeller as used in vacuum cleaner does not provide lift and is more the "real deal". The last real world project that I know of was the Avrocar that was tested during the cold war but never made it into production. Just though it might be an interesting project to build your own "flying saucer" :)

New look, new home page

Just pushed out a newly skinned site.  The layouts are a bit cleaner and nicer (and there's another Robot hiding in the footer!).  In the continuing search to surface the best projects and make them as easy as possible to find, we've also redesigned the home page a bit, including adding a Project of the Day.  There's also a note from the Editors, which we'll update frequently as updates occur! Several bugfixes are out as well, most importantly the fixes for comments with images, and the Paypal button which sometimes was not pushable in Firefox.

Single AC Adapter for multiple devices?

Just wondering if there's any downside to re-wiring an AC adapter to run multiple devices. I have 6 of these wall warts near my TV for the following - router - usb hub - phone charger - harmony one charger - clock - PS3 bluetooth/IR converter Most of these run on either 6,9 or 12V. I would be so much cleaner if I can rewire (or splice) a couple of AC adapters to have like two or more outputs. Is there any downside to this? Thanks

new commenting system

So a lot of changes went up on the site today. A lot of it is covered here by frenzy. One that you might not notice at first is that the commenting system has changed. Instead of comments branching out with replies to replies to replies there is just the parent comment and a line of replies after it that are all indented the same amount. I'm a huge fan of the change since long conversations with multiple commenters got very confusing and very far to the right. This is cleaner for sure. So have you had a chance to see it in action? If so, how do you like it?

Camera bag insert covering

As I didn't want to spend extra money on a new camera bag I'm using an existing bag with a divider I've made from cardboard and an old camping roll mat. My question is I want to wrap it in something so it looks a bit cleaner and add an extra layer of waterproofing. I was thinking about using the material from an old tent but was concerned about condensation build up. I live in the UK so not much chance of weather! Please share any ideas. Oh and yes I will be replacing that tape for something a little more grey.

Problem: can't erase on whiteboard

I recently decided I needed a bigger whiteboard and so, in true instructable style, made one out of a fridge door. Unfortunately the fridge door had some stickers on it and I removed them with orange oil and some other cleaners. Now when written on, the whiteboard marker will not erase. Instead it smudges and cannot be removed even with water. What can I do to make my whiteboard usable agian? I've heard car wax can be good, should I try this? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
