peltier device air con

Hey guys I am working on a project, my first, and am wondering if any one is willing to offer advice. the simple setup uses a swamp cooler to blow cold air over a radiator. the radiator cools down water that is connected to a peltier.if my theory is half accurate (which at best it is) I should be able to make the peltier quite a few degrees below the ambient temperature.

Cheap Power Conditioning Unit (PCU)

In the video released by the windbelt creator, he mentions that his PCU only costs about a quarter. I dont know if that is his mass produced price, or his off the shelf price, but does anyone have any ideas about how to make a PCU for say, under a buck?

Maximum cooling efficency

I am looking to build a compact cooling unit, sized under 12"x12"x12".  I have seen and built 2 of the most common types of home made air conditioning units.... 1) Run air across a block of ice or other frozen object. 2) Blow a fan through a whirl (or other pattern) of copper tubing and pump very cold water through. So my question is which would offer more cooling capacity? The first option is cooling with Ice which is below freezing, with minimal surface area.  The second option is cooling with cold water but still above 32 degrees, could potentially have more surface area.

12v to 120v sine inverter boosting

I have a 20 year old van. The a/c leaked and it is much cheaper to buy a 120v window unit ($140 with a 3-year walk-in exchange warranty) than to pay a shop to rebuilt the vehicle a/c. I chose a 5k BTU window unit that uses 4.1 amps running, and have a 1k watt sine wave inverter. Alone, the inverter will not start the a/c unit, but will power the fan. I confirmed a trick to start motors with an inverter. I connected an 8" bench grinder to the inverter and started it. It took a few restarts to get it up to speed. Then I started the a/c and it ran without problems. The bench grinder motor was able to supply the reactive power the a/c compressor needed to start. Both continued to run without straining the van's alternator. BUT, I don't want to travel with a running bench grinder going, that's not safe. Is there another way to supply the reactive boost that is safe to travel with? Once I get a simple stable way to run the a/c I'll work on a mount to vent the hot side. The van has sliding windows.

AC Wall Unit Timer/Thermostat

I have an older AC wall unit in my apartment. It has 3 dials – one for temperature (1-8 where 8 is coldest), one for fan speeds (low cold, high cold, low fan, high fan), and a manual lever that opens the vent in the back. I’m reciting this by memory as I haven’t actually looked at it closely, but it has one of the larger 3 pronged cables that plugs into a dedicated outlet in my wall (perhaps used for a higher voltage). In any case, my intentions are as follows:    • Have a timer for the AC unit to plug into to turn off on programmable intervals           o Monday – Friday it will be on after 6:00pm until 7:00am the following morning.    • One nice feature would be to give it a thermostat capability.           o If the temperature is below 70 degrees during these time intervals, for instance, then the AC unit will shut off, otherwise it will power back on.    • Another obscure (and I’m sure complex) feature would be to allow remote access to the timer. I know that this requires some unique hardware, but I’m familiar with programming and can visualize the methodology in telling the timer/thermostat unit a different set of commands (let’s say I know that I’m coming home early – I send information to the device via the internet to have it turn on a few minutes before I get home). I understand the last part is quite complex, but it’s not a priority at all, rather, a neat little feature that would make this all the more worthwhile (and in my eyes more interesting). I know that there is a similar device out there (can’t remember the brand name) that has a lot of these features, but I’m not willing to drop $300+ on something like that. For now, my priorities are listed in order per the bullets. First and foremost is being able to program a timer for a wall AC unit. Second is to have it detect the temperature of the room and set it accordingly. And third is the availability to ‘talk’ to the device remotely. My question for you is: how can I get through the logistics on this sort of project? What components (hardware) am I looking at (general price range), and what degree of difficulty will this entail? I have my computer practically right next to my AC unit, so communication with the device won’t be difficult in those regards. Otherwise, I’m just looking for tips and pointers. If someone happens to know of a (cheap) unit that does most everything that I’m looking for, then great. I’m all ears and really appreciate any feedback.

Heat powered cooler?

It's rather warm around here. And by "rather warm," I mean it's 105 in the shade, and it's 89 in the house with the swamp at full blast. Does anyone have an idea for powering a cooler with pure heat? Perhaps similar to those lightbulb-looking devices that have an inner bit that spins around when placed in direct sunlight, except that is running a little generator that is then running a computer fan, like the ice box air conditioner spotted on this site. The main thing is I'd like the device to actually be powered by heat. Just for the heck of it. Even if it's just heat mechanically powering something to power a fan that I could have just plugged into the wall. So no solar cells making electricity. I can make parabolic reflectors easily if needed, so don't be afraid to use them. What's the best way you can think of to cool off using heat? "Best" can include inefficient but really awesome, like a fresnel lens pointed at a boiler that is providing steam to run a gigantic fan. I'll go get my goggles, ray gun, and keys to the airship.

What to do with an old A/C unit?

I have recently purchased a new window-mount air conditioner, and now I am looking at the crappy old one saying "I can't just throw this away after having read the Dumpster Dipping instructable!" Any ideas on how to reuse/recycle this horribly used (purchased ca. 1988) A/C unit that hardly puts out cold air anymore?

Insulating Ducts

I was thinking about opening one side or the top of the "metal box" that "insulates" the out/intake ducts of HVAC unit, and filling that space with styrofoam popcorn used for shipping fragile stuff. We recently had a couple of trees cut down in the backyard and now our HVAC unit is completely exposed to the sun for most of the day! We bought a shade to set up but I was thinking the styrofoam would just be a little bit more of a help! What do you think? All ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheap Room Air conditioning

Hi, I have a burning question, I thought about combining a small fridge I have with a floor fan for cheap in room air conditioning. I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on how to combing the two without hazards. Tho the fan is a bit bigger, in concept would do as well.   Thanks, Chen Cohen.

How to fix a cars air conditioning.

Alright, so my sisters cars air conditioning is no longer working. She took it to a mechanic and he said the repair would be around 3 grand to fix, but understandably she would rater fix it herself. So, I am trying to fix it for her, but I wanted to know if there was a way that I can remove the compressor without pouring Freon all over the place?

Just over a year ago I bought a battery for my laptop and never conditioned it properly. Two months ago it could only charge to 60%. Now the battery will only charge up to 44%. If I take the battery apart and charge/condition each individual cell (8 cells), will the battery be mostly restored? The battery is Lithium-ion inside an Asus ul80vt laptop.

A very important suggestion for Instructables

Hello, I'm a researcher interested in wiki-based problem/solution management (Instructables is exactly an example). I have found a big problem with such sites and how to solve it: Problem base (PB) wikis already exist, such as WikiHow and WikiAnswers. But I think they're not well-organized enough. For example, WikiHow has a category called "Air Conditioning" which collects solutions related to air conditioning: http://www.wikihow.com/Category:Air-Conditioning As you see, there are no subcategories in this category. All solutions are just listed in A-Z order. A person must scan these solutions one by one to find a solution that matches his problem. What's the ideal PB in my mind? Under a topic like "Air Conditioning", the PB should further categorize problems in three ways: 1. By symptom ("What's wrong?") 2. By task ("What do you want to do?") 3. By component ("What component is your problem in?") Each of the above can walk a user down several levels of subcategories until actual problems come into sight. This is what I call "well-organized". "By symptom" and "by task" are actually approaches that categorize objects (here, objects are problems) by function, while "by component" is an approach that categorizes objects by structure. (Visit https://plus.google.com/u/0/102291835965130378165/posts/V6pMGuQcBuJ for my original post on this.) Best Regards, Ziyuan Yao

I am selling my knex.

I have put my knex up for sale on Ebay because I no longer use it. It is very good condition as I have sorted it over the period of about 4 days. I have taken great care to remove all broken/non-Knex pieces from it. It also comes from a non smoking home. There is enough knex there to build I_Am_Canadian's Heavy Cannon V1 as I have done so before. It was awesome. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30KG-used-Knex-Sorted-Good-Condition-20000-Pieces-/220932399309?pt=UK_Construction_Toys_Kits&hash;=item337098e0cd#ht_500wt_1413

Are you allowed to copy contents

Hi, I just glanced through the Terms and Conditions and I am trying to understand if people are allowed to copy authors contents on this site, to published on places like my blog. Or do you need a written consent from Instructables. Thank you

Posting Instructables' videos on other sites

To whom it may concern, my name is Tomas Husner and I come from Poland. I've been meaning to ask under what conditions I am allowed to post your videos on my web site or if I am at all allowed to do so at all. Do I for example need to place the logo of Videojug in the video, post a link to your website or give other forms of credit to your web site in order to be able to use some of your video content on my site. If I am allowed to do so (under certain conditions of course) am I also for example allowed to edit the video in any way? Thank you for your answer.

I have a terribly sore back....

Because last night, when I went out to the car to go home, there was a foot of snow all around it.  Getting the car from the parking lot, 50 feet to the road took half an hour of digging with a plastic ice scraper.....oh what fun ! BTW:  that is NOT me in the picture :-)

Modding the sounds of a toykeyboard

At the current moment, I am in possession of a Casio Rapman (with VOICE EFFECTOR) that is in pristine condition. At the moment, my question is how would I go about changing the sounds of the different settings for the keyboard in order to make a 4-bit chiptune set  instead of the early nineties vision of what things should sound like. Anyone know their stuff?

Universal motor

After disassembling a hedge trimmer I have obtained a universal motor (meaning it can run on either ac or dc) It has a power rating of 400W, and a label indicates that it has 1/2 horsepower. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do with it? it's fairly small (15cm X 5cm X 5cm) and in reasonable condition. Thank you for any responses.

Nightvision

Would it be possible to create goggles that use a old cellphone screen and a cheap webcam and still be battery powered? I currently have two old cell phones in really good condition internally, and all that would be left is the webcam and the LEDs. If this turns out correctly it should be able to view IR light fairly well. Hopefully it will work the same as the shown goggles but not as bulky.

heat sensitive wall outlet

Does any one have or had plans for a wall plug outlet or an extension cord from a tool that would turn off if the temperature of the devise reached a preset degree.  i.e. your coffee machine operated normally but it caused the duplex plug to overheat and the circuit would shut down avoiding a possible fire condition.
