Help with costume

I'm making a costume that looks like this- This is actually my profile image. I have lots of corrugated carboard (but no large pieces yet-just medium sized boxes), thin cardboard, foamboard, and a sheet or two of lexan/plexiglass (for the green spikes), and I think I can get some fiberglass, resin, and some bondo. Does anybody have any advice on bending, cutting, dying(lexan-all I've got is clear) the cardboard, foamboard, or lexan? I've also never worked with fiberglass before-all I've heard is that it's a mess. Any tips? If anyone can help me with the head, antenna, armor, or especially the chest, I'd greatly apreciate it.

Idea for Halloween Costume

I have an idea for a cool Halloween costume. I know it is a little bit earlllyyyy.... But I don't care. :P I am wanting a costume based on the principle of the mermaid captured costume by using the backpack as a support. I want a tall costume, like a 7ft or so tall. I was thinking have a backpack and sew in a PVC/ Dowell rod standing up going to the head.. But I'm not quite sure of the arms or how I would see out of it. Any help is appreciated or links or just anything and everything. I'm also wanting it to be like a ghost type monster almost shady creature costume. Thanks!

nephew's halloween costume

Hi all, I am new here because my nephew wants to be a robot for halloween. I showed him a number of sites which featured adult halloween costumes (and some for children) and he didn't like anything I saw on the site. Does anyone have any links I can check out or ideas about how to make a robot costume that is both environmentally healthy and more importantly safe for my nephew (He's 10 years old)

Halloween: Spindly finger costume hands help

Hi! Looking for any ideas on an easy to do version of the gloves/hands in the attached pic. They don't have to have articulation, just be relatively sturdy. I have approximately zero cosplay/crafting experience so I'd appreciate detailed thoughts. If this isn't the right place, I apologize for my newbie-ness.

Halloween Costume Help

I decided to be Marilyn Monroe for Halloween and I have a long pink dress that I am going to alter to emulate Monroe's pink dress from the film Gentleman Prefer Blondes. Does anybody have any ideas how I could do this? The three main things that I need to do are get rid of the rhinestones in the middle, make a bow for the back, and get rid of the straps.  I know how to alter the middle but have no idea what to do about the bow or the straps. Any ideas for how to make the bow would be very appreciated. I know that I could just cut the straps off but there is no support on the top whatsoever and the top is a little loose on me. The material is silk so if I just cut off the straps I'm pretty sure the dress would just fall off. Any ideas are very appreciated!

Bohemian Rhapsody fancy dress outfit.

Hi All, I'm going on a stag do in August. the theme is freddie mercury (lead singer from Queen). I want to recreate the shot in the Bohemian Rhapsody video where its just the 4 heads all lit from below. I will be Freddie Mercury, I will print off the other faces and stick them to card, I just need a mechanism where by the 3 other faces are suspended around me, preferably on arms of some kind that are retractable and spring into place at the pull of a cord. Not sure how practical this is, just seeing if anyone has any ideas. thanks in advance.

I need to make fake hipster glasses

Hello.  In two weeks, I need to look something like this guy: http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/meet/gallery/mythbusters-adam-savage-bio-2-324x205.jpg I've already got someone doing Jamie Hyneman.  The only problematic bit for me is the glasses.  See, I already wear glasses, and my frames aren't that thick.  So, in maximizing authenticity, I'd like to do a DIY-conversion for my glasses to make them look like Adam Savage's hipster glasses.  Here's my working hypothesis.  I get some kind of thick, lightweight, cut-able material and cut it into two parts, with a groove lining the inside.  Then I glue the two halves together, fitting around the frames of my current glasses. I'm thinking my best option for a material is thick posterboard - the stuff that's sort of foamy in the middle, with card paper on either side.  The foamy bit would make it easy to carve a groove and fit it around my glasses. Here are my current blueprints: Would love to fish for a few more ideas, though, before I dive headlong into this.  Are there any other materials that might do me better, or a better method altogether?  Input of any sort is appreciated!

Costume foam

I am make a cosplay costume and it's VERY large and it requires a foam I have been looking all over trying to find anything about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NsQLq7EMkk At the 3 minute mark it shows this man making a Halo Elite costume leg, as you might have noticed the foam is ridged but flexible, also it's large. Where can I buy foam like that? I am assuming I can't buy it in such a massive size and that I would have to glue layers of it together, but if you know where I could buy it in a massive size that would be great too.  Final part what would be the best way to cut the foam it looks like that man is using a turkey carver any other ways? Thanks to all those that can help me!

Final Fantasy 6 magitek armor!

Hello, fellow instructables members! I was looking over Bug's steampunk chicken-walker mecha, and I had a most awesome idea. From the final fantasy game that screams "steampunk", I remember the cool walker mechas, the 'magitek armor'. See where I'm going with this? I plan to make a chicken-walker style Magitek armor costume! Now, I doubt my mecha will do the magiteks any justice, and I've never quite made a complete "costume" myself, save for a mashup medieval style outfit (makes me think of ike from fire emblem). So, if anyone has input, especially anyone who does steampunk, I'm all ears. Also, thank you again to the user "Bug" for the inspiration!

LED Suit of light

Hi, I am looking to build a fancy dress costume, and have approximately 12 months to make my costume :) What I would like to build is a replica of the following (or something similar): http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/02/night-snowboarding-in-an-led-suit-is-mesmerising-to-watch/ I have searched for flexible fabric with woven LEDs, i have also searched several suppliers on Alibaba for flexible led mesh screens but nothing seems to be quite suitable. I think, for this, i would maybe be best off building the suit from strips of waterproof 5050 SMDs like this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/615439688/business_agent_smd_505_led_strip.html Power would be in the form of the biggest 12V power supply I can find. The only problem here is that at full brightness, the suit is going to consume A LOT of juice... I have seen this costume which is similar in construction, except all the LEDs twinkle (like TV static): www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DLal9uma1iVc&ei;=nwgtUNT7B6_Z0QXekYGwDA&usg;=AFQjCNENmYUCu_AwYaEAwqAiWSDFRFnUeg&sig2;=FXRYO81ccZavpYyeBsZMyQ This has the added advantage of lower power draw as not all of the LEDs will be on at the same time. I actually much prefer this concept, however I have absolutely no idea where to begin on schematics... Any insights or friendly advice from the experts would be handy, I have a rudimentary knowledge of electronics, and am very handy with soldering. Thanks!

Compact Active Body Cooling System

So I'm going to be making a full-body space armour type costume (Samus from Metroid Prime) eventually and I want to try to design an active cooling system that isn't too heavy, can be concealed within the costume, doesn't require too much replacing of coolant , and doesn't use obscene amounts of energy. I know the way it's done in commercial active cooling vests is that they run ice water through plastic tubes in a vest. The problem with this is that there is a big, huge tank of water with a big pump that the vest is tethered to and it needs to be plugged into an outlet. The way I'm thinking of doing it is by putting a network of copper wires in the garment I'll be wearing under the armour that lead to a cooling system in the back of the suit that, right now, I'm thinking will involve ice packs and/or a fan array. I feel like it might not work, so the alternative is to design a custom water or liquid cooling system. I'm planning on using lithium ion batteries for the cooling system and lights if I can. Any ideas or suggestions?

Help me figure out the best way to make armor for Lady Eui please.

I'm in need of help. I am fine with sewing, but armor and other cosplay props are not in my skill set.  I also have a tendency to be a bit of a perfectionist and go all in and over the top with my work. To give an example, I spent about 4 months of hand bead work on one of my previous cosplays.   The character I need help with is Lady Eucliwood Hellscythe from the anime Is This a Zombie? I have pics. I really need the armor, but I would love help with her scythe too.

Patterned materials..

Trying to get  a jump on my costume this year for halloween and I want to a) plan ahead better, and b) base it on my character in Second Life. Problem is I have been looking at everything from shower curtains to upholstery materials, trying to find a solution, without much luck. Mainly due to the "best" match for what I want to try being an upholstery category material (and even that isn't.. quite right), but I have a lot of yardage involved, and it costs like $27 a yard or something... :p Basically, what I am looking for is something rubber like, so flexible, not overly "glossy", with enough thickness it can be layered, but with fairly fine detailed patterning on it. The original "suit" this is supposed to mimic looks a bit like layers of flexible armor, layered over each other, but both due to the design not being mine, and the prospect of, once done, photoing the result, doing a bit of Photoshopping on it, and "replacing" the in-world version I currently have, I want to make it slightly different. The problem, of course is that I am running into a problem of finding any material, never mind what fits the bill, save for, maybe, buying just smooth, rubber sheeting, similar to inner-tube material, then trying to do something with it. But, how, if I had PVC rubber, do I add texture to the thing (other than, for example, trying to airbursh a pattern over it, which I have zero skill at)? Nearly everything is the wrong material, too big a texture, or just.. not one that will work. Mind, best possible texture would be something like: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/Dakra/Tech256.jpg But, that ain't happening, so.. something like: http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/75178/75178,1310971434,2/stock-photo-hi-tech-background-blue-metal-texture-81298300.jpg or even a very small pattern or honeycomb, like: http://images.colourbox.com/thumb_COLOURBOX2412500.jpg Would work. Heck even if I had to decal the stuff on, somehow.. But I am at a loss here as to what material to use (mainly do to finding a place to get it cheap, and not in some insane amount), and if I can get it, how to make the result not look something like the attached image, or better, add the texture to it I would like to see. Any ideas at all?

Epic Costumes Winners

Thanks to everyone who entered in the Halloween Epic Costumes Contest! The Epic Costumes category has a legacy of some of the most complex and involved projects on our site. The results are always mind-blowing, and this year was no exception. Like previous years, we had no shortage of amazing, EPIC entries. I am very pleased to report that there was more than several heated debates around the lab when selecting finalists, and it was just short of total bedlam while choosing the winners. First Prize Costume Armor with Wonderflex by volpin The Wonderflex Armor won because it had the best blend of process, presentation, and execution. The project gives you a behind the scenes look at how this professional grade costume was made, almost daring you to try and recreate the painstaking details based on the comprehensive instructions. This custom made costume really defined what we were looking for in an Epic Costume entry, and your votes reflected that. Also, the composition of the photographs really sold the hard work that went into this epic costume. Second Prize   Cthulhu by alexthemoviegeek Life-sized Space Marine Armor by thorssoli Bowser's Castle Costume by Mr. Noack These costumes represented everything we hope for in an epic costume; over-the- top DIY awesomesauce! These costumes used several very clever techniques in construction, and the finished projects really show us the artistry and craftsmanship that the authors put into their work. Third Prize Mr.Freeze Costume by rmorrow4 Alien Xenomorph by Mostlymade Bowser Costume by CassiniCloset Orchard Spider by BrooklynAliens Narnia Minotaur by ellwoodjoe The time and dedication put into these creations is evident, and each have their own complexities and challenges that were masterfully overcome. It’s hard to deny that each of these costumes are indeed “epic” and would win the nod of approval from costumes aficionado’s the world over. Congratulations to all the finalists and a big thank you to everyone that entered, you should feel proud of your amazing, EPIC creation. Remember, costumes aren’t just for Halloween, we have an entire channel dedicated to costumes, so you can dress up and have fun all year. If you didn’t win this time around I hope there was something that has inspired you to make another epic costume, next year’s Epic Costumes is open from right now until this time next year! MY ROBOT COSTUMES ARE FOR SALE!!

I really hate to do this but our family has grown by +1 and I am starting my sophomore year of pursuing a mechanical engineering degree with another two more to go after this.  Sadly, to cover bills and expenses, the robot costumes are up for sale. The men's costume fits me well at 6'1" 190lbs. The women's costume is sized for a 5'3" size 12. I know it's short notice for this years Halloween but if someone acts quick, I can ship quick and maybe you can own contest winning one of a kind most amazing robot costumes ever. Maybe your town has box robot army events or maybe you could start your own army of 2 with these! A few caveats, the costumes have been stored indoors 100% of the time but the steel components were not painted so they have some surface rust (makes for a nice distressed patina). The current state of the costumes requires tying ones self into the costume (with the help of another) which we used bailing wire for. They are large bulky items so shipping will likely be fairly high. Local pickup is available in the Seattle/Tacoma area or maybe "Greyhound Freight" would be a cheap option. Make a reasonable offer on the pair and they can be yours! The detailed build of the costumes can be seen at the instructable below: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-build-robot-halloween-costumes/
