Copper-sulfate crystals are lovely with their rich blue color. So lovely that artist Roger Hiorn completely covered the inside of an apartment in London with them. This was done by sealing it and pumping in 75,000 liters of supersaturated solution. After it had cooled and been drained off, the doors have been opened for visitors to come in two or three at a time. This can only be done since the apartment was set to be demolished. Stop by before it closes on Nov. 30 and gets destroyed. Link

Hello everyone today I found an interesting instrument known as the glass armonica (Also glass harmonica or hydrocrystalophone.) I began looking to see if there were any available online only one company i found even makes them (links at bottom) and they charge a very large sum of money for said instrument I want to see if anyone can make one. http://www.finkenbeiner.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XPfoFZYso8&feature;=player_embedded

I'm Sure someone has had this idea before but I just want to know if people think this would be cool. I was thinking about make a breadboard with a crystal radio transmitter with a head phone jack sticking out of it, that would fit in some sort of case, and have it stick into my iPod Nano 3rd Generation. My iPod is red so I would paint the case red to match, Please post idea and links to the parts please.

Will using time library with an Attiny/45/85/84 ( http://playground.arduino.cc/Code/Time ) create an accurate clock? I keep on seeing people using these external crystal things. Do I need one? Isn't millis pretty dang accurate? How would I sync the clock with real time?

What do you think about the feasibility of a credit card sized crystal radio? (Fits inside a wallet) Some possible i though so far are... A simple pcb with a diode, and a capacitor and a coil wrapped(protected by duct tape) around it. The antenna has to be tied to a hole on a corner. Or it is coiled to the card, ready to be unwrapped. The ear piece can either be external... Or can be glued to the card itself, but you must put the card near you ear... Instead of a winded coil, maybe it can be part of the pcb design itself... and to tune it, you unhook a beady wire and place it in the holes placed in a interval. What do you think? Any more ideas? In fact. a competition can be made for this idea.

Hey everybodyi just got this idea of making a wireless internet using ADSL (from cable form to wireless). There should be some cat5 cable connections. There are 8 pins in a cable, 4 of them are used: 1 pair for transmit (+ and -) and another for receive (+ ad -). I haven't experiment with this yet, but by connecting a crystal to the adsl, like transmitting music using AM radio, and connect a receiver, like most cd players that have abilities to receive am radio (perhaps solder the 2 wires from the speaker), this probably should work? Connect the same things to the computer, like the images below shown. So 2 crystals and 2 radio receivers are needed. Also, there should be 2 different frequencies, one for transmit and another for receive.Hope this would work. Any thoughts and comments are very welcome =]

Hey! I'm starting a new project, but don't really know ~where~ to start. Basically I'm trying to make a "crystal formation" style lamp. I want it to be quite large, and look as realistic as possible. I'll attach some images of the shape I am going for. Anyway, I'm not sure how to start. If I was to use resin style molding, how could I achieve the crystal shape? Or would there be better ways? I'm an amateur at this, so any advice would be wonderful! How would you guys do it? Thanks.

Most of the sites discussing piezoelectricity mention that sugar crystals can be used, but I have not found any examples of them being used. I've just tried it with about a 1cm chunk of low quality (conglomerate of small ~3mm crystals) crystal, and got a good 100mV wave when tapped with a pencil. I've not tried applying a signal to it yet, and some better single crystals are growing at the moment, so I was wondering how well it works compared to commercial piezoelectric compounds. I've not done anything like this before, so if anyone knows where I can find information of the best way to mount and apply a signal to the crystal, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dear: Instructables Just to let you know I am limited to materials in my house. I want to grow a crystal with plaster like plaster of Paris but I am running into a few problems. I know that Gypsum or plaster of Paris is already a crystal but it doesn't have the necessary hardness I want. I want It to have a hardness of a minimum of 6 on the Mohs's scale. I also am limited to chemistry knowledge. I've been trying all day to design a crystal with the specifications I want but I've been having trouble trying to draw a Lewis dot diagram for plaster of Paris. I am not that good at drawing Lewis dot diagrams unfortunately. Here are some materials in my house I think I could use to incorporate with the homemade crystals. Acetone Potassium Chloride Sugar Baking Soda Potassium Nitrate and more... Can I have some help please? Thank you. From: Noah

I was cutting an iron L rod, and the cutting disk began to produce red sparks, instead of these habitual bright orange. Simultaneously, its cutting effectiveness was down dramatically. I searched in the web, and learned that this phenomen is named crystallization, and it is due to overheating. Now, my disk is a new one, I want not throw it to the waste. Any idea how to get it back? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I'm currently experimenting with piezoelectricity. And at the moment my experiment is limited to just a few piezo sparkers extracted from cigarette lighters. The sparker works with observable voltage spike on my multimeter. No voltage spike however when I use the tiny crystal (the size of a zippo flint) taken out from the sparker.I was trying to replicate this experiment (without the oscilloscope):Piezoelectric Rochelle SaltAnother thing, Would continuous vibration produce continuous voltage? It is known that piezo crystals produce high voltage, yet very low current. What are the options to increase the current? Would winding un-insulated copper wire around it (or any kind of contact with conductive metal) increase the current? Apart from lighter, what other surplus sources of piezoelectric crystals (i.e. quartz, PZT, Rochelle)? Can the crystal in RC toys, radios be used to generate electricity? Although there is the option to grow my own Rochelle salt, I'm not looking into it at the moment since it's going to take quite a while to grow. Thanks in advance!

This kit is 5.00 dollars . To order send email. Then send check. The amplifier has the parts soldered on top of homemade circuit board. It is tested . I listen for KCBS, KGO,kSCO and several other stations with only a small ferrite on a crystal radio.. Only the circuit board is included. The coil and tuning capacitor are not included. Many coil and variable capacitor combinations will work up to about 13 Mhz. There is a small wire near the output which provides feedback when it is moved towards the input. Each station is tuned individually as the feedback is different. Wrap several turns around the input coil (not included). The variable capacitor is in parallel with the coil. The shortwave coil can be a 1 inch diameter with 13 turns of narrow wire. Stations I pick up are Radio Havana Cuba, Radio New Zealand , Church and amateur. There are some cautions. It could include cutting tape for your circuit design. The shortwave requires an external antenna. Schematic included. Crystal earphone is not included. Another transistor can be added for speaker or 8 ohm type earphone.

First off, Hello everyone. I built the ghetto parallel port programmer, adjusting the pinouts to work with a attiny26 and it works flawlessly.Kudos to the author. My problem is that when I drop in an external crystal rated at 16Mhz I avrdude quits because of a faulty signature; I assume this means the timings are off.At firs I thought I had misconfigured the fuses, but ,thankfully, when I dropped an 8Mhz crystal in it worked again. I know this uC can be clocked this high, so what's the problem? thanks

1 Power Supply Circuit: During the circuit board repair process, power supply part should be inspected at the first hand and then come to the other part. +/-5V, Power supply failure can occur under below several situation: (1) NO power supply voltage or power supply voltage is deficiency, NC system is often used +/-5V, +/-12V, +/-15V and +/-24V, a few of them use +3.3V, and the varied or unstable voltage of power supply will cause the system working impropery; (2) Use voltmeter to test the voltage of power supply, and the result show is normal. Voltage waveform detected by oscillograph has shown the existence of big ripple. This situation maybe caused by open circuit of Filtering capacitance, bad rectifier diode or cold soldering, but sometimes it could be caused by an overloaded component which has been brokendown and damaged by power. (3) System can run properly when it is just being opened, after a while of operating, the voltage begin to drop off. This is usually caused by voltage stabilizing circuit and large power triode. (4) The voltage decrease accompany with temperature increase maybe cause by component cold soldering, it is electrical connection can be affected negatively when the temperature high up. (5) NO power supply voltage or supply voltage decreases significantly will cause the system to interrupt or stop working, this fault can be detected and spotted easier. (6) When the capacity of power supply load drop off or filter circuit become invalid, it will cause the system halt suddenly, this situation which is very difficult to justify can bring damage to the equipment and facility even get personnel wound. 2 Clock Circuit: Clock circuit mainly exist on the systematic motherboard, it is the foundation of large-scale integrated circuit system through which it can work, it can generate the constant square signal in the circuit base upon the crystal oscillator (commonly known as crystal), Once the crystal oscillator stop working, it is same as the heart of human being stop beating, the whole system will fall into the status of paralyzed, only after crystal can work under normal condition, the systematic circuit can operate under the command of CPU according to the frequency of crystal. The number and frequency of the crystal could be different due to the variety of numerical control system, but generally will at least one crystal, different clock frequencies required by the other circuit can be solved by frequency dividing circuit or other crystal. Crystal possess a higher rate of failure or damage, below are some malfuntions of crystal: (1) Leakage: Use multimeter and switch to P*10K level to test it, if the resistance is infinite, then it can be viewed as normal; (2) Internal OPEN CIRCUIT: Value of resistance is infinite tested by Use multimeter, can fail to generate oscillating pulse in the circuit; (3) Alternative crystal: Due to the transformation of crytal will cause its internal parameter change which can only be detected by osillagraph or cymometer. Although the crystal can still has oscillation, but the clock frequency is deviated from its nominal value, and the still existing oscillation pulse can’t make system circuit work properly due to the value of oscillation is wrong. Only cymometer can test its tolerance now. (4) In clock circuit, the both ends of crystal would be connected to ground by one ceramic capacitor value range from several picofarads to tens picofarads, failure of the clock circuit result from this capacitor leakage, deterioration is also more common. The best tool to test whether the crystal is good or bad could be oscillagraph or cymometer, multimeter is very difficult to detect the root cause. 3 Reset Circuit Reset circuit also exist in the circuit system of motherboard, it is unique set of large-scale digital integrated circuit. Microprocessor and interface circuit are all possess reset terminal. Reset pulse generate by reset circuit will clear the progam counter, force CPU recall the orginal files from the memory, execute initiation process on all the controller chips, system will occurs the phenomenon of disorder or crash as a result of faulty reset circuit, the method of using cymometer to illustrate the reset pulse is turn on/off power supply repeatly, observe and record the pulse value at the right moment of power supply on/off since it should be the normal square wave-form. If there is no existence of reset pulse, all the resistor, capacitor and transistor in the reset circuit should be detected. The reset terminal of integrated circuit should be regular low or high electrical level, or else, it is probably the malfunctional reset circuit or damaged integrated circuit.http://www.circuit-engineering.com

I need Bismuth metal to make my own Bismuth Crystals. I cannot locate it at all in Australia Ive looked at the obvious such as metal suppliers etc. even non-lead shot and fishing sinkers but can't find it. I realise that I can buy it online but it is a fairly heavy metal and with the added cost of mailing to Melbourne Australia makes it very expensive. As I'm going to melt it do you know of any other tools or items made of Bismuth that I could use? Any words of wisdom would help. Thanks in anticipation..

Hello all who cared enough to move your mouse anywhere near the link to this post and clicked (100% of you who ended up here fall into this group.) I had an idea while hovering around the limits of wakefulness and sleep. using a microcontroller, some switches, an oscillating crystal, a battery and an antenna, we make a type of transmitter that when activated plays a series of bleeps according to a code in binary (i'm thinking that when the current goes to one pin, redirect to positive of crystal for on/1 then a grounded pin for off/0) and on the receiver end, it's basically an antenna, small transistor radio locked to the frequency of the crystal (AM preferably,) a decoder chip (microcontroller) and a relay to complete the circuit so that whatever is needed to be done remotly can be done whether it be disengaging a magnetic lock, switching lights on/off remotely or even setting of fireworks remotely. thanks to all who post a meaningful reply!

Is there a website to learn about how to use picmicro's really easily? I realize that there are some instructables about it, but to be honest they arn't very helpful. For example, I have no clue what the crystal does, why you need it, how to hook it up, and how much voltage they need because I need to buy some.

I recently received a comment from a very new member on a very old forum post. It is in relation to the old post here. Big claims, but I've never heard of a tems though it seems he is referencing it as an activation energy of crystallization or some such. Any takers?https://www.instructables.com/community/DIY-Solar-Cells-through-screen-printing/?comments=all#C5CQFV4FRBPYYW8

Does anybody know the relationship of borax and boric acid? Are they different forms of the same thing? Are they related at all? What if any do these have in relationships to flux to silver smithing. (I think the flux is Boric Acid but I am not sure.) I have a box of Borax, that I use to make liquid laundry soap. - I also used it to make crystal snow flakes - beautiful. Just curous.

Just a thought, but what if you combined this with this and this. I was surfing the internet, and found the "glow crystals", then thought about the instructable on the "mad scientist's light",and wondered about combining them. Later, I read the action figure instructable, and thought that it would be a great addition. I don't have the materials or skills to do that, but I was wondering if someone else was. (maybe make an instructable, and credit me) It would be like a glowing alien experiment from DOOM!!

I was thinking of designing a unidirectional speaker driver circuit. As far as I know ,I need to drive the speakers with audio signal with ultrasound carrier wave... I thought of making a circuit that generates 20/16 Mhz (1.25mhz) square wave? using 4060 ic and 20 mhz crystal and using optocouplers to torn on and off the speakers at same frequency. do you think it is going to work?

Is it possible? The idea is very practical, a set of crystal-like needles that are somehow shredded into small projectiles which seem to be propelled by some form of energy or plasma or something. If thought through, I think it would be feasible. Recources? Do we have enough energy to create even a rough prototype? Can we create a way to propel these projectiles witout an explosion but rather with, as I said before, plasma or an energy source? Give me your thoughts...

I wanted to make an alarm type thingy, ad I want to use the alarm from an alarm clock. I don't know how though, I tried connecting a cell to the wires that were already on the alarm, but it won't work. I think it's one of those piezo-electric crystal thingies. And I know I have to have pressure on it to work. How exactly would I use it?

According to a news report in Physics Today, scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have confirmed the creation of element 114 first reported by Dubna physicists in 1999. As true afficionados may recall from the original Star Fleet Technical Manual (pictured), element 114 is dilithium, used to regulate the matter-antimatter reaction for warp propulsion. Unfortunately, with a lifetime of just a few hundred milliseconds, it's unlikely that crystals of element 114 will be produced any time soon.
