RFID LED Light Cubes

Hi! Long time follower of DIY projects. I had never considered actually trying any of the projects I had seen before, until I came upon the November 2011 issue  of Popular Science and saw the RFID LED Light Cubes. I think the idea is just So Cool and really want to try it as my first DIY project. Of course (ahh Irony, you cruel mistress!) that seems to be one of very few projects whose full instructions were never released. I'm pretty bummed out about this and even tweeted Vin Marshall (the OP) about it. He responded that he didn't think that there were any plans to release instructions for that project which is just extremely disappointing. I mean... someone Made it for the issue... how hard could it be to write up a set of instructions? I have the ingredients, but not the recipe, it's like asking me to make a souffle if all I know is that it has Eggs, Milk, Flour, Butter, and Cheese. If the idea of this DIY was to interest new amateurs in DIY projects, then they succeeded! Since November of last year, I've been trying to get some help making this awesome concept, but I just don't have the know-how. I'm begging you, Please help me figure this one out :( Help me make my first souffle. Here is a link to a 2 page PDF of the original PopSci article (and all the info I have on this project) https://www.dropbox.com/s/bds0pe73godn45m/RFID%20LED%20LIGHT%20CUBES.pdf Sincerely (and very hopefully!), Czarr

Rubik's Cube Competition

Up until recently i haven't thought much of a Rubik's Cube, other than it seemed impossible to solve.. but i found mine about a month ago and am getting almost addicted to it. Invisible concrete cube

This concrete cube made by Daniel Franke and Markus Kison has the amazing ability to turn invisible. Thanks to eye-tracking and a video projector for each face of the cube, the cube has the view behind it projected onto its faces. The result is like looking through a glowing window instead of a cube. You can see the effect in the video. It's not entirely smooth yet, but a very cool idea. Animatied 3x3x3 LED Cube !

A guy named "portreathbeach" built this simple 3x3x3 LED matrix. It uses a PIC16F690 in a ZIF socket for the brains. Each layer has nine LEDs with the cathodes tied together. The anodes from each LED are connected to the LED below. The LEDs are multiplexed so that even though all layers appear to be on, they're being addressed individually. Video of the matrix in motion below !!

LED cube project

Hey guys ,so was in progress of making the https://www.instructables.com/id/LED-Cube-4x4x4/step7/The-controller/ and i'm stuck on the controller step, a lot of people ware stuck on this as I see from the comments, and I can't find any help, would someone mind helping me? I have several questions, if you have time, I'd appreciate it if you answered them!  after zooming into the drawing, few questions remain: - resistors for the cathode and anodes, what resistance should they be? I'm powering this cube with 5.7v 1800ma nokia charger, current LEDs of mine run with a 120k ohm resistors, would these do fine?(connecting to the chip)  - On the left hand side, what are the 5V + > , GND connection mean to do? do they connect to the cube? or?  - also the connection 18-21 that have resistors and then are linking up to... cant read the writing, im guessing it should be the anodes as thats the forward current?  Hope someone could answer these for me? THANK YOU so much!  After i'm done making this project I will hopefully be able to make an easy to understand diagram for newbies like myself so they can work out this circuit themselves and wouldn't give up

Really Cool, Solar Powered, Balloon Carried, LED Lit, GPS Tracked Project

Hey everyone! I have this pretty sick idea for a project, but I need some help with the details. Basically, it's a cube tied to a balloon, and inside the cube, there is a GPS device, back up batteries, LEDs (sticking out through the sides), a noise maker (the one from Make Magazine #14, will explain later), a cell phone, a cell phone charger, and instructions. Also, I will hope to have the cube be solar powered. So, what I will do is send off the balloon with cube attached, and the wind will hopefully bring it to someone, but if it doesn't, not to worry, the LEDs and noise machiche will catch peoples attention. When someone finds it, they will read the instructions, and continue the chain. Here is what I need help with, having basically no electronics skill: 1: Where can I purchase balloons that are really thick? 2: How will I make the cube waterproof? 3: Right now, I'm pretty sure that the smallest trackable GPS device is a cell phone (being tracked by Mologogo). Is there anything smaller/easier? 4: Would a solar panel be able to power everything in the cube? 5: How can I wire it so the batteries can power the cube when there is insufficent light, and the solar panel can charge the batteries when there's light? 6: How do I put it together? 7: Is there anything I'm overlooking? 8: How's your day going?

LED Flash Drive Cube

I am making an LED Cube with a flash drive built into it, one for my friend (birthday coming up) and one for myself. I was thinking about having 8 LEDs in it to sufficiently light the cube up. LED - http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-Round-5MM-Ultra-Bright-Red-Led-6-000-Mcd-USA-Seller-FAST-/281134922484?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item4174f27af4 I wanted to rig it up so that the LEDs were powered by the USB, but then I thought that it may not supply to enough power to power the LEDs and the flash drive at once. Would the 5V current of the USB port be able to power both the flash drive and LEDs (if so how would I connect them?) or should I use a separate power supply (battery with a switch)?

New with microcontroller, Need help

I'm wanting to program and do stuff with LED. Overall I like to make one of those 3x3x3 cube or bigger. I was wondering since I don't have any kind of microcontroller programmer what should I get to start off. I was told to get USBtinyISP. Didn't know if I would be able to do something like this with that or not. http://www.ladyada.net/make/usbtinyisp/ this is the site with it. I just need somewhere to start then I can add on to this to end up making a multiplex or charlieplex cube. Thanks

Math formula(e) needed: tesseract model construction?

Although I CAN do this without the math formula(e) to figure it all out, I would like to have it for a quicker method of figuring out size, etc. so I didn't have to use up so much material in guessing. I would like to construct the tesseract I have pictured here, using rigid clear plastic sheets or panels.   Given a said size for the "inner cube" say 2 inches (approx. 5 cm or about 51 mm) what formula(e) must I use to calculate the panels' dimensions to connect to the larger cube (knowing full well this will depend on the size of the larger cube....say approx. 4 inches across (about 10 cm or 102 mm)? The reason I'd like the formula(e) is that I may need to increase the size of the center cube by an inch or so, and this would allow me to do so without having to go through the "trial and error" thing so many times. I would, of course, want the center cube to be "centered", if possible or shall I say as close as possible. Thanks....

Help with charlieplexing

Hi all,I recently decided I want to make something fun again, and then I came across the LED cubes.I would like to build a handful of 5x6x5 LED cubes, I haven't actually built any yet, only in simulation thanks to Proteus. My first attempt was a single 6x5 grid (30 leds using 6 i/o pins), which was then scaled up 5 times, ie 5 sets of 6x5 grids. (150 leds, 30 i/o pins) All this works fine, but seems a bit of a waste when i need a few of these cubes and I could run the whole cube off 13 pins as one big charliplexed grid. However the problem arises that I cannot visualise how the actual cube itself is built. I have no problems drawing a schematic to connect up the 156 led charliplexed grid, it's just the construction that baffles me.The Christmas Tree indistructable is the best one I can find, but still it is not entirely clear. Maybe it would help if the LED's were numbered. Do they run in sequence? ie, If I you arrange a grid of 156 as 13x12, could you then count them from left to right into smaller grids of 30 as 6x5, or top to bottom?TIA

I have a few questions and I hope somebody can help me as I really would love to make this led cube 1) is there a step by step tutorial on how to make this led cube on a breadboard? 2) Has anyone created a code already that i can use? 3) Can someone show me how to soldier up the leds in the correct way? 4) is it better to do this project on a breadboard or not? 5) can i buy kits that has everything for this project to work? Thanks for reading and hope I get some good advice and help

Ever seen an 11x11

Now we've all seen the photo shopped pictures of 11x11s but have you seen a REAL one? This one is real, bought off of ebay, from a guy who got his hands on one while the company from Hong Kong (YU XIN) was still illegaly manufacturing the cube based on the illegaly obtained plans from V-cube. This is one of very few. Keep your eyes peeled.
