Creating Database

Hi All, To be honest, I don't know if my inquiry fits within this forum, but I really had no idea where to post what I need. I am currently interning at a non-profit nature center which relies heavily on volunteers. As art of my internship, my supervisor would like several databases created. I don't know what program would work best for my needs and I was hoping somebody could give me a few ideas for what I need to create. Here is what she would like: 1. A volunteer database that is searchable by the training and expertise each volunteer has received. Let's say for instance, that we are having an insect program and only those who have been trained for the program can volunteer. I need to be able to search a keyword or from a drop down menu individuals who have received this training. A spreadsheet would suffice, but some individuals have so many training sessions that it would get a bit long. We also have over a hundred volunteers. 2. A teacher database that shows the grades and classes each teacher in our system teaches. We have school groups come out, and if their is a fourth grade program, there is no reason to contact every other grade teacher. 3. This is the really challenging one. We have rental programs, and all users must complete rental information which includes name, contact information, type of rental, and emergency contact. I would like to go paperless with this and if somebody rents more than once they have to fill in the information every time. I would like to be able to search their name and have all of their information come up, then input their rental type and time, which would give me a list of how many rentals we have had per day/week/year and how much money we have made. As I said, I could just make a spreadsheet for the first two but I would like something a bit more sophisticated. If I was not clear about anything, please let me know.

Download entire ible database?

Was wondering if it's possible to download Instructables, in its entirety, like you can (and I just have) with Wikipedia? I'm looking to spend the next year or two doing appropriate tech and infrastructure building in various places, and thought it might be helpful having access to ibles from my usb drive if I'm away from the internet.

ERROR 400: Error retrieving featured Forums

This is probably just a temporary database glitch, but I thought I'd get it documented.  I tried to access Eric's "How do you like the new editor?" forum topic just now (7 Oct 2009 10:30 AM PDT), and got the error message quoted in the title.

I need an iTunes-style database solution for all my videos...

Hello, Newby to Instructables, read about it in the newspaper today.  Looking forward to some help/input on this project of mine... I have a huge (and growing) volume of video media. pushing 5 TB, and I'll be buying another 2 TB drive before autumn.  Now, having all this media at my fingertips on my PC without having to rifle through my DVD library is great, but it's only half the battle.  What I really want to be able to do is search through all my videos and TV episodes with the same ease that I go through my music library in iTunes. So, what I need is some way to list each video, and list each "tag" that applies to that video (SciFi, TV, comedy, romance, etc., you get the picture).  So, Excel serves well enough for that part, though I'm not married to it as a long-term solution. And, Excel fails completely as a searchable database, where I can just type in, say, "SciFi" and get the database to present me with every single Start Trek, Stargate, B5, etc. TV episode and movie that I own. So, can anyone suggest a program that would already be able to do this for me? iTunes itself isn't a solution, because although I could  make a plethora of empty MP3 files, import them into iTunes, and assign all the metadata I want to them, there wouldn't be anyway to click on the empty MP3 entry and have the movie/video pop up and play. Also, my videos are either direct DVD rips or mkv files, so I can't import either of those into iTunes either. Thanks in advance!

Why is the Answers summary page still running an hour or more late?

It seems that the Summary page listing recent Questions/Answers is roughly an hour behind schedule. When I post an answer, or flag a Best Answer, the summary page remains indifferent (even after multiple reloads) for a substantial time.

Problem with Virtual Patches database?

Did something go wrong with the Virtual Patches database at the turn of the year? Ed had given my my patch for the Best-of-I'bles book, but now it's gone (I still have the Robot Art patch). I've checked a couple of other users known to have the book, and the patch is missing from their profiles as well. UPDATE: This morning, everything seems to be back to normal. Should have updated before Noah took up his time posting :-/

Calling all VBScripters!

I am trying to create a vbs script that will use vocabulary databases to randomly choose words according to sentence structure, then using a large database (that tells what words are relevant to the random word chosen) it creates a basic sentence. With more complicated sentence structures there are more complicated. I need some other vbscripters to help. Here is how it works The program chose a statement sentence. The basic structure is noun verb Then the program choses a word Cats verb Finally using the matching database it creates a realisitic sentence Cats meowed. A more complex sentence would be article noun verb preposition pronoun noun article cat verb preposition pronoun noun article cat called preposition her kittens article cat called to her kittens The cat called to her kittens

Creating an Invention and Instructable Mixing Software or Website

I was wondering if we could create a new website device, we could call it the Invention Mixer Software. It would basically be a large database of practical or groundbreaking inventions, and maybe many of the instructables here.We could arrange it according to use (Renewable Energy, Agricultural, Games, etc) and we could arrange it like a shopping cart selection. Each item would contain Name of Invention, Its basic use and advantage over common inventions, and the link to the manufacturer or institution doing the research. With the shopping cart, you can choose the inventions and instructables you like and store them in the website, or copy and paste to your friends to discuss, compare or talk over.It would be more than hobbyists website. People making new inventions could compare with the products now in the market, and compare it to instructables that can make similar inventions. It would be like a cheap, low cost utility compared to the very powerful but expensive invention making machines like:INVENTION MACHINE Software stuff like this:CREAX Invention Software would be the every man's invention software on a website.

Cataloging School Papers

I spontaneously decided to catalogue every paper I get/do in school this year. I've run some tests with tesseract, a OCR program, and its decent. Except... I don't have a scanner... I'm thinking of giving it up, unless someone else would like to also try it out. If so, I'll put effort into procuring a scanner, or figuring a way to emulate one with a camera. Any random thoughts on this?

Brassgoggles steampunk site is down?

I know they many people who visit this site also visit and the accompanying forum, and i know there's quite a lot of overlap between these two sites, with members migrating here, to show off their work, for example; Heresyoftruth and aintmicheal. For the past few days, i've not been able to access the site, nor its forum from any of the computers i've tried with. All i get is a screen that tells me: "Error establishing a database connection This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at This could mean your host's database server is down." Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Has anyone heard from a moderator, or do they know where i can contact a mod? I'm starting to get worried about this.

Database of facts project : Teaching Good and Bad to a machine ...

.Let's imagine that you successfully created an intelligent machine, capable of thinking. The purpose of this machine would be to replace all of our governments and judges, so the world become a better and fairer place for every of its inhabitants. It would be an IA managed globalization. As you've just created this machine, her brain is empty. Like a tiny baby, she has to learn a lot ...Question : what facts would you teach her ? (given that your goal is to make her a fair judge and good world leader)What would you teach her to make her able to make the difference between what's good and what's bad ?

I manage MySQL databases. And this was not difficult before. But now I tried many thoughts and ideas how to solve the complexity, but didn't correct the problem. I can't access the amount of data due to the complexity of the program. And I can't understand what to do about it.

Automated Delivery Gate Image Capture

Hi everyone, I wanted to see if you guys can give me some advice or point me in the right direction (preferably towards an instructable) to achive my goal.  I am trying to improve upon an access gate. Currently It just opens with a remote controller. The improvements I want to implement are the following: 1. Place cameras to automatically take pictures of the vehicle as soon as it arrives from all angels     I was thinking maybe with an IR sensor of some sort 2. send those images to an email or to a database. 3. have the driver be able to scan documents and upload them to the database or send to an email, and be alerted when they have done so.  I want something like they have at the border checkpoints with those cameras, and also with the document upload. Any feedback is welcome. thank you!

Good science idea

Hi, could someone make an app that, maybe uses a similar technology, to be able to identify plants, animals, and fungi? You could make it into a database where the users of the app put in the information, much like Wikipedia, so its ever evolving. I'd really like to be able, in my wood travels, to take my non existing iphone, and scan an organism with it and know all about it. I feel that that would be awesome.

Library managment system

Hi everyone! In Bosnia & Herzegovina every library still uses old way of managment (paper cards etc). I was thinking about making simple program for that use and donate it to schools in my country. I know little bit about programming in C#, I am looking for someone to help me with this project.

Why aren't responses to Questions considered searchable "comments"?

This morning I noticed a Question posted that was nearly identical in concept to one I had answered several weeks previously. When I tried to find my response, the Instructables site was unable to do so. I found what I needed instantly using Google and "". It appears that the responses people provide to Questions are not classified in the database as "comments", or at least they are classified in such a way that the pull-down "Comments" filter is not able to find them.

Nationality Group

Hi guys, Obviously i am a member of instructables that is why i am able to post in the forum. I am Nigerian and i live in Nigeria. The reason i am making this post, is because i want to be sure i am not alone. It would be nice if Instructables can create a nationality database, this way people from the same country can  connect, relate and partner for projects. But, until then if you are an active instructor from Nigeria, say Hi. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

DIY Electronic Salvaging Database / Website [team needed]

Hello, I am a web developer by trade and have fallen in love with physically computing things. I use Instructables regularly to gain inspiration for my out projects here at home.  The magic of Instructables, for me, is the sheer massive amount of ways to re purpose our electronics. Some articles here document devices more thoroughly than the manufacturers themselves. When I was following TinkerNut's Instructable to make a 3D printer I had a spark of an idea, and I've never bought electronics the same since. While deconstructing DVD drives, and regular paper printer I was playing the stepper motor lottery. This printer has a stepper, this one doesn't. Well, I can basically walk into a Goodwill now and pick up a stepper motor any time I want now that I know what to look for. When I was following an Instructable to make a joule thief I knew that somewhere in my head of dead tech I had to have a NPN transistor. I just had to! But I had no clue where to begin looking. There were transistors of all shapes and sizes, some with text some without. I learned a lot of different transistors this way.  I am currently working on a Beta for a website I want to make. I don't want to buy the domain just yet until I get some feedback. This is a content driven database so I am looking for some help. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work! The Idea Well, the idea is to create a website / database that you can go to and type in Stepper Motor and be presented with a list of different stepper motors. When you click on a type of stepper motor you will see a list of products that contain this or similar stepper motor. Then you can hit a thrift store (my local Goodwill always has a ton) and grab the right thing, the first time. On this list of stepper motors there will be a list of Instructables using this part. In this way the site will work alongside Instructables to enhance and instruct the community. (note: I hope this isn't seen as a threat by Instructables, because its not) Also, now when buying tech I am able to analyze the product for its value, resale value, and re-purposing value. I can snag a cheap LCD from the Dollar Store or even NPN transistor if need be. Possibilities Users can salvage and sell themselves? Partner with Instructable community? Horde salvaging - (user 1 wants C02 cartridges, (user 2, 3, 4, 5 send cartridges to us (free box) and we send them to people putting them to use. Looking for some people to help me nail down the idea and beta test database functionality. Let me know if you have any ideas or want to join the effort. I really think this could be extremely useful to us who don't like to waste, especially precision instruments such as stepper motors and NPN transistors. This is for way more than just those though. Cheers!

UK Government Wants to Build a Database of Every Phone Call and Email

This just crossed my News ticker this morning: 10:20 AM on Tue May 20 2008By Adam Frucci The plans for the new database are currently being drafted up and may be proposed for inclusion in the draft Communications Bill later this year. While many of the types of politicians you'd expect are behind it, a number of others are, thankfully, vehemently against it. They're against it not because of the basic violation of citizens' privacy that would come from such an action, however. Instead, they point to the UK government's lousy track record with data security as a security threat great than whatever threats they'd be stopping by being able to look up those emails of you flirting with the girl you met at the office Christmas party. It's another really strong argument against giving governments overreaching powers to spy on their citizens.Hopefully, the people of England will get properly angry and vocal against this plan, keeping it from ever becoming a reality. The next step, after all, will be the thought police, and at that point it's really too late. {BBC via Boing Boing }Big Brother IS watching, everywhere......"If you wanted a sure sign that the Orwell-ization of Great Britain is underway, then look no further than this. Lollipop ladies, those kindly old women who man the main roads next to school, similar to the US crossing guard, have been issued with video cameras to record lollipop rage as school-side road rage is known. The cameras, which record traffic coming from both the front and the back, mounted on the lollipop lady's cap, and attached to an Archos portable DVR, have been developed by a British firm, Routesafe. Several local authorities have invested in the technology to counter the increasingly aggressive behavior on British roads."CCTV cameras everywhere

Looking for a Jägerschnitzel Recipe

So the other day, I went to "Spring Fest," a local German American Society event. Naturally, the beer was great (some types I've never even heard of before), but... the food was incredible :) I'm looking for someone's own recipe for jägerschnitzel (as opposed to something I find on a large recipe database somewhere on the interweb). Perhaps it's my red meat deprived diet - but it was incredibly delicious and I'd like to try making it myself along with some red cabbage sour kraut (equally delicious).

Random Button

Instructables is in desperate need of a "Random Ible" button. I find that about 90% of the time that I've been browsing lately, I can never find something that is just intriguing. It would be useful to be able to click a button and be randomly sent to an Instructable on the database so I could find the interesting kinds of things that are hidden 10 pages in or more. It would be even better if there could be a classification with them that allows it to work like StumbleUpon, finding those projects that interest you based off of your taste. Am I the only one who wants such a button?

Hacking famous brand devices

Hi, I have spend a lot of time hacking some scanner CCD sensor from different brand of scanner on the last few weeks to build a touch screen. My idea was to make a database on the different PIN of the CCD of several brand of scanner to help people building their own. It's not always  that easy to play with an oscilloscope to reverse engineer those. But I was a bit hesitating on posting brand name like HP or CANON and explain how to crack the sensors. I wasn't sure if I could have some problem... Any ideas? Thanks

Not a bug, but a feature request

In the forum sections we can see who made the last comment and I find this info very helpful. In the Answers sections however we only see the number of replies given so far. A lot of us like to help out by providing more or less usefull answers and it would be great to see who provided the last. This way it is easy to see if the person asking for help actually came back and replied him/herself. As an alternative it would be almost as good to see a tick, point or "replied" info once the person asking replied again. Would of course also help during springclean to remove tons of questions that never got solved.... Not to mention user from the database ;)

Looking for help identifying some components

So I recently got an Iomega CD-RW external drive from a yard sale and I want to turn it into a burning laser pointer (which will be apart of another project) but I went and saw that the current tutorial is for 245 mw laser. Now I haven't taken the drive apart yet, but  I'm guessing its not just going to be stamped on the diode itself. (that's just too easy) Is there a website or database I can look up this iomega cd-rw drive to find out what parts it contains. The model number is CDRW55292EXT. I tried Googling it but I got noting really. Any thoughts, tips, ideas, etc?

I confirm - comments are not working

Comments, forum answers not working at least 19 hours already. I wouldn't have made a new topic, if I could answer one of the existing ones.... There is nothing to take screenshots of. I write a comment, click submit button. Page scrolls down. I scoll up, no comment has appeared. Checked many hours later, still nothing. Nothing on my profile either. Attempted to post again (3 times in one topic) still nothing. This is not a problem of some specific computer, I tried linux ff, mac ff, mac chrome. Other two topics confirm. Please fix it. Check databases on these users who have complained maybe there's something wrong.

List of Forums doesn't mention new topics, just comments?

I consider this a bug; y'all might call it a feature request. Whatever... :-)The two images below were captures within less than a minute of one another. The list of forums (first image) shows that "RachelisBored" was the most recent person to post to the Art Forum, three days ago. However, the Art Forum itself (second image) claims that "softrevolution" posted more recently, earlier today! The difference is that "softrevolution" created a new forum topic, while "RachelisBored" added a comment to an existing topic thread. To me, this is a bug. A posting is a posting is a posting. Is this something that is easy to fix, or are top-level Forum Topics classified differently in the database than comments?

I'bles has already excluded URLs from the new Google search harvester

UPDATE:  A long time ago, I wrote: The new Google search has some nice features, and some not so nice ones.  Besides the obvious (unsortable, hard to filter, etc.), there's one really annoying bug.  If you search for words which appear in the titles of Instructables, you get a bunch of hits for the auto-generated "e-mail" pages.  For example, note the third hit.  In my opinion, URLs containing "email?" should be excluded from the search database, the same way that URLs containing "edit?" and "/search/" are. In the intervening time, it's pretty clear that the intrepid Instructables Staff has already resolved this bug.

Domino Specifications Needed

Does anyone have specifications for the pip size and spacing for regulation (assuming there is such a thing) domino sets?  I'd like to take a shot at making some, but neither the "intarwebs" nor the local library have provided anything in the way of concrete data.  The best I've found is several web sites that would be happy to sell me a "template" and some sort of special pip-drilling bit for $49.95.  I've found some download-and-print-your-own-dominoes pdf files, but I don't know if those are regulation or just someone's best guess at how they should look.  I don't own a set of "factory" dominoes, so I can't just measure directly.  I even searched the online patent databases, and while there are several domino-related patents, none of them have detailed measurements.
