Dystopia is dead :(

Unfortunately, as I ran out of pieces while building Dystopia, I just had two opportunities: 1st: buy more pieces 2nd: take it down Shadowman39 talked me into taking it down. I just made some pics of the parallel arm lift in the hope someone might rebuild it.

Dead CPU? Answered

I have an HP dv7 1130us laptop that recently quit working. One day it worked, and when I went to turn it on the next day it gave me a black screen and the light by the caps lock button blinked every few seconds. Looking on the hp support page for my computer I found that the blink code meant that the CPU had a problem (see here). I tried taking the CPU out and plugging it back in. Then I bought a CPU from ebay (it is brand new) and put it in. Same problem. When I turn it on the fan comes on strongly then cuts to a lower rpm abruptly. No light comes from the screen. As I said the caps lock and num lock lights flash once every 2 or 3 seconds. The light by the power plug stays on solid. I am not sure how it could matter but I should also mention that we got a new wifi router the day before this happened. There is other helpfull information here. Do you have any ideas about what might be the problem?

My cell is dead??

Well apparently my mother dropped my cellphone, now when you turn it on, the screen lights up, but it's blank, it vibrates when I turn it on because it was on vibrate before (startup sound). But it won't do anything else, I tried changing the ringer, hitting buttons, and it didn't make any sounds. Display cable popped out? Any ideas? -Punk

Uses for a dead smartphone?

Hey guys. New to all this disassembling/reassembling/making new stuff, please humor me. So I have this old Samsung Galaxy S Plus phone, which died in early 2014. And now, it's summer holidays, and I'm bored. I remembered this phone, and thought that maybe I could make something out of it. Is it possible to, say, take out the display, or the camera, and use it somewhere else? Maybe I could do something with the speaker? I tried searching on the internet, but didn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

LCD Dead Spots? Answered

I recently bought an Ipod touch that was at a discounted price because of two large dead spots.  They appear to be permanent, not just stuck pixels.  Recently though, there are now spots developing, but they're not the usual circles.  They are rows, one pixel wide and a dozen or so pixels long.  Every day they get a little bigger.  What causes this, and how can I fix it?

Stop Hackers dead

This is interesting, So Zscaler acts like a pass/no-pass Gate.   If it were a firmware gate that only could be accessed by a dedicated keyboard then it could stop hackers dead.   Yes it would force sites to hold all their content rather then pulling this from there and that from elsewhere but NO HACKERS unless they physically take a site. What say you ?

Is K’nex Gunning Dead?

I know there are some people still doing it (myself included). Much like potato cannons, k’nex guns have lost popularity over time. It’s really a shame that it’s lost so much popularity. Maybe someone could make a website dedicated to K’nex’ing as a kind of KI mark 2. I really hope that it starts up again (without all the block triggers!) sometime but it seems unlikely.

Laptop question - is it dead? Answered

Roger-X's (Windows) laptop is playing up. When he powers it up, nothing happens on the screen at all - no messages, blinking cursors etc. You can hear the hard drive spinning up, and the computer makes a repetitive beeeeep, beep-beep, beeeeep, beep-beep, which continues until you kill the laptop by pressing and holding the power button. I did try hitting F1 as it powered up, and beeping stopped, but nothing else happened. Any ideas?

PC half dead - not good

Machine will not POST - no beep, BIOS smart fan-control not engaging, PS2 keyboard has no power, monitor reads "no signal" Board does have power - things spin (like the CPU fan which shouldn't until it gets hot) Preceding clues(?) - I thought I'd developed tinnitus, but found it was the PSU (I think) making a high-pitched ringing noise, half the day unplugged and that seemed to go away. Display not engaging properly on start-up: If I waited until the machine got to Windows login and then switch the monitor on - no problem. Switching the monitor on before this point - black sort of standby mode. I think I might try the PSU first, then think about the mainboard. So far I've plugeed and re-plugged things, tried with 0,1 & 2 strips of RAM with no difference. Any suggestions welcome I spent a lot of time replacing 1 cap' in the PSU, then I replaced the PSU (logic being that if I've tampered with it an the thing still doesn't work I should replace it regardless) Then I bought a new board. I was a bloody-sod, CD/DVD still doesn't work... L

It doesn't seem to be drawing any power and spinning up. There is power, as the internal LED is active, but the drive itself is not responding at all. There is no movement. Is there any way to recover its contents? The drive was used as an 'archive' of all our family photos covering about 20 years :S

Is the KNEX gun community dead?

So there has not been a post in the KNEX forum section for weeks about KNEX guns and It is getting so slow and dead around here that I could not stand it any more so I thought I would post a topic to see what others think. Are any of you working on stuff? I know some KNEX gunners have moved to YouTube but there is still very little content also a lot of people have left I know years ago everybody was saying that the community was dead but there was a nice jump in activity in the last year or so but It seams that stuff is dead as meat around here know. I found this community to be are very welcoming and fun place on the internet and I would hate to see it dead for good. Is there anybody that has plans of posting again? I just want to know how things are going has everybody lost interest or just grown out of this hobby? I hope that we can come back to life but I don't know will 2015 go down as the year the KNEX gun community died? Hope all is well with all you KNEXers!

Is there a way to revive a dead LED? Answered

While testing an LED I bought, I may have given it a bit too much power, and it burned out. I can't get it to work with any power source. I could buy a new one, but I had to mail order it from The Electronic Goldmine, meaning I would have to come up with about eight bucks worth of stuff I don't need. Is there a way to bring an LED back to life?

Dead external hard drive?

I've been searching the internet for answers for the last couple of hours, but no solutions have helped me so far. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that I have to either take it to an expert for data recovery, or if that isn't possible I'll have to accept the fact that the files are gone. So earlier today I was frapsing some PS4 content with the help of a Roxio video capture (PS4 signal blocked so I used Fraps to get around that). I've been saving the files on my C: drive, but since fraps files tend to get quite big, I changed the save destination to my external hard drive (Buffalo). Immediately after I ended the recording, my computer froze and I had to force shutdown. Upon restart, it started to repair damage to the disc (translated from Finnish), and once it was ready, it then proceeded to the system recovery menu. After at least 2 hours of trying all other options, I ended up choosing the option that resets my computer. Well that really wasn't the end of the world, since the most important files are on my Buffalo hard drive, but after the reset was complete, I couldn't access my external hard drive. I tried everything in Disk Management, at least what was suggested in similar issues, but nothing really changed anything. I can see my external hard drive in the Disk Management, but can't access it. When I try to initialize the disk, an error pops up that says: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", and it just shows that the disc is not initialized, and that it is unallocated. Is there any other option than either taking it to an expert for data recovery, or is that too late now? Thanks in advance.

Is my ibook like..Dead?

Well, apon leaving my ibook on for the past year or two almost non stop, I've come to the conclusion that perhaps the hard drive is a little deadish. Apps open really slow, and sometimes they lock up, VLC player can lock my mac up pretty easy depending on what I'm playing. Oh yeah, and for some reason java apps really bloats my mac down, does anyone find that? Like limewire or similar apps, it jacks my cpu's temp through through the roof. Now my itunes and it's 20 gig music collection won't open, well it does, but the spinning beachball thing appears, and shortly thereafter locks up finder and pretty much any other application I have open, even dock is hard to race to, to force quit it. Would it be worth it to go out and buy a 7200rpm drive instead of a regular 5400rpm laptop hd? I'm guessing I might actually get quite a performance boost, but I'm unsure if it's worth $120. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How do I determine if my computer's CMOS is totally fried? Answered

Yesterday I got a call from my wife that she was bringing the computer back up (there had been a storm and she SAI(D she shut everything down normally and unplugged everything),  and she has this "message" that CMOS had failed and was loading default......press F1 to continue or F2 for set up. Sadly, neither option actually works.  It  "sounds" like it is processing (looping?) but nothing happens.   Turning it off, waiting and back on again produces the same results and it doesn't get far enough into the boot process to access either the CD or the HD. Give it to me straight....it's brain dead, right?

Fixing broken power supply?

Have been using my FolgerTech Prusa i3 printer for a few weeks now, and was doing some cable management when, "Pop!" goes the power supply. I had the mains power unplugged from the power supply, and didn't connect or disconnect any other wires. I was working on hiding some endstop cables (That i will probably just go ahead and shorten later) and when i was satisfied with the job, i went ahead and plugged the printer back in. Pop! Immediately unplugged the printer to prevent further harm. Sounded as if a .22 went off in my room. No burning or acidic smell, just a pop. From the sound of it, i assumed it had to be the power supply. So i examined everything, the ramps boards, the arduino, etc. Nothing. Everything looks fine. I remove the power supply from the printer, and plug it back in. LED light stays off, no more sounds. Using my multimeter, i checked the output voltage, and sure enough, it's dead. So i go ahead and crack the power supply open, and begin examining the components. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. All the caps look fine, no charred marks, no scorches or burns. No component looks any different than its functional counterpart. Beyond the cheap chinese soldering job, the board looks fine. So i take the board off of the metal plate to examine the backside. Solder splatter everywhere, but no shorts or anything (It worked for about 3 weeks.). I do, however, notice that there is a nice dry joint on one of the large capacitors. Thinking that might be the problem, i go ahead and fix the joint by reflowing the solder. Put it back in its case, plug it in, nothing. Anyone have any idea what may have happened? I am a student who currently doesn't have 30$ to fork out for another power supply, but do have an arsenal of spare electronic components. (Will eventually buy another power supply, but currently don't have money to set aside for it.) What should i look for? What blew up? Why does it not work anymore? If any more info is needed, let me know!
