A question on instructables....

I was wondering, an instructable can be how to do or learn pretty much anything, right ? It doesn't necessarily need to be about building something concrete? I was watching one of the videos I have a fondness for (because of my involvement with "the subject") and thought of something I might be able to put together for my first instructable, before my wife gets around to cleaning her junk away from my work area.

Bluetooth Headset mod with LED's

I have an idea, I need a good starting place. My father is deaf.  I want to get him a cell phone and send him SMS text messages.  I obviously don't have to worry about him running up minutes on my cell plan.  What I want is a bracelet or watch band that lights up with LED's.  The LED's would stay lit up until a reset button of some kind was pressed.  The phone would have to be linked via bluetooth with some kind of handset protocol that would set off the LED's. A fake watch would be ideal.  The watch innards could be big enough for the bluetooth circuitry and the battery. Dick R.

New Instructables Navigational Bar (UPDATE)

I guess I noticed it first, b/c when something changes or is altered someone Forum Topicifies it.SOOOThe New Navigational Bar (The Yellowish bar in between the deep Orange, and the White page background), When you roll over one of the menus (Home, You v, Explore v, Community v, and Submit v) Whichever menu you roll over, exposes a drop-down menu.Just a little heads up.:DI just noticed this too, Look where the search box is, down with the rest of the navigation bar!I like where it sits now!

Event programmable USB LED/light (for the deaf)

Would like to see... a USB LED, which can be programmed to light up ...based on some 'event' such as new email, or whatever software triggers can be programmed, to turn the light on/off.  Even better, if there was a means to use different colors... or blink rates.

Help for a highschool project!

Hello everybody, well im a student, and I need your help please as soon as possible!! I have to do a project to finish my last year, I was thinking on making something for deaf, like a game or something to teach them how to read, because I've read that most deaf child don't know how to read and it is all because they're parents.. This last year a group win the science fair making a wheelchair that is commanded by the voice, now they are in LA showing that... Or anything else to do!! anything helps! thanks a lot... by the way, im from Uruguay. Thanks!

Forum topic lock not showing

Someone at HQ has sensibly "locked" the comment about the awarding of free membership for bug reports where many members were posting their bugs, to deaf ears. However, "locking" puts no special message on the visible topic....so if you attempt to find the "reply" button, it isn't present in the locked thread, so, for all the world the forum software looks "broken". What's a partially deaf person in sub-Saharan Africa to do, when hearing aids typically cost hundreds of dollars, and he can't even afford the $1 a week to buy new batteries?Retired Canadian business executive Howard Weinstein came up with a solution - a cheap hearing aid for the 3rd world, redesigned with some donated 1st world technology knowhow. It's powered by rechargeable, rather than throw-away batteries - at about the same $1 cost per battery, except they last 2-3 years, and can be recharged using a pocket-sized solar charger. Where to obtain parts?

So, I pulled this piece from an old back massager and I wish to build something special for a deaf friend. I have a couple more motors from old game controllers that I'll be scavenging too, but I need some more materials for the rest of the device. Anybody know where I can obtain the circuits and other parts to build a music visualizer (not arduino or anything requiring programming)? Preferably free or the very least free?

Help making hearing aid

Hello! I need a bit of help for a project I am undertaking to make.My is to make such a device which detects the user whether a car or any other vehicle is approaching or not. The project is dedicated for the people who are deaf and cannot cross roads safely. What I think a solution could be is to make such a sensor which detects the horn of a car which further activates a vibrating motor in the pocket of the user.The vibratng motor is not at all an issue but the sensor being the problem. If anyone can please help either by giving your own solution or helping me in what I propose to do. Please help as this is not anything personal but a social cause. Hope to get an answer. Pranjal

More thoughts on Video-Only Instructables

Hello, not that I am unable to view videos on instructables, but more and more instructables are simply a video, sometimes with two sentences, sometimes not even that. Not that I dislike video tutorials and such, but many people still have low bandwith, or (like me) can not turn on the sound all the time since it would bug other people. Also sometimes it is more usefull to read instructions, steps and technical data. Plus there might be deaf people interested in some project but unable to understand all steps due to the fact some videos will depend on audio explanation only. My two cents: Include a minimum text length check for instructables. Video only should be youtube or such, not Instructables.

An Alarm Clock Idea - No Lights, No Sound

I'm a pretty deep sleeper, and I don't wake up very fast in the mornings, which is bad since I ride the school bus to school. I set my alarm clock, with a high volume, but it still doesn't wake me very good. I've thought of trying to make an alarm that flashes a strobe light, something like a deaf person might use, but didn't think it would work very good. So, my idea now is to think of a way to make an alarm clock that gives pulsating shocks when it goes off. I have absolutely (well, 99%) no idea how to connect it up, nor how to produce the shocks. I'm thinking a shock with high voltage, but low current, like static electricity. I figure that should wake me. Do y'all have any ideas, or better suggestions? Also, do you think that the shocks (if usable) would cause any dangerous effects on my health? Thanks!

Earthquake gives US man his hearing back

The earthquake that struck America's east coast yesterday was a blessing in disguise for a deaf man who somehow regained his hearing through the vent.Robert Valderzak has been in a bathington DC hospital since June after he lost his hearing when he fell over. Doctors believe it was as a result of fluid or issues ofthe bones within the ear. Until yesterday, he was employinga diffehirespeakerphone with a lightand an speakers to speak with people. His four youngsters were visiting him in hospital when the 5.8 magnitude quake struck. when It passed, he felt anythingdiffehireinside his head and knew he mayhear and talk again. "I said, you perceivemy hearing is back," Mr Balderzak told Fox News. "i will be able to listen to eachthing, individuals within the hallway." Dr Ross Fletcher, Chief of Staff on the Virginia Medical Centre, said he was pleased his patient is feeling better, despite the stdiversitycircumstances. "a fewpeople appear to be slightly frightened by it but he's delighted that this earthquake came along because soon after the development, he mayhear everything within the room very clearly," Dr Fletcher said. Mr Valderzak believes his hearing was a present from God.

A week of weeks, these last 4 days have been.....

I hope I am not coming off lately as just complaining about life in general, but just letting those who know me well enough to want to know, how things are going. This has just been ONE OF THOSE WEEKS (and it isn't over yet ! ).  Monday and Tues, I had to help my wife prep for cataract surgery (two days off, but not really much of a "vacation"), Wed.  she still needed assistance in picking things up off the floor when she'd drop them....and today, I had to go in and meet my Mom at the Ear doctor (she's been around 60% deaf since early childhood, but never wanted to learn ASL).  They cleaned out her ears, checked the hearing aid, and put fresh batteries in it.....then since none of that helped, they checked her hearing. A 120 db beep was inaudible to her.   And, being quite advanced in age, and slowly slipping into senility, she is unable to accept this "new" condition.  It is very disheartening to not be able to help or do anything at all to help. I know this is not really a "social" arena, and is more geared towards DIY then just airing greivences,  but I thought I would share this one thing and hope I didn't irritate too many of you all out there. Birding Challenge - my first official act

Oh, looky looky! It's great what sort of things you can get up to when you're in the same room as the people who sign the cheques*! Actually, to be honest, this was Noah's idea, but he wanted somebody that cared about the subject to do the donkey work. So, announcing my first actual official Instructables Challenge! Autumn is the bird-spotters’ peak season, and the time that garden birders prepare their garden for the next seasons’ bird activity, so to launch our new Birding Channel, we’ve put together some awesome prizes to reward your birding-related projects, be they equipment you make or modify, projects for the back-garden birder, or you’re passing on the essential skills and insider tips of birding. It would also be interesting to see what software tools or apps you could create to use in the field. As a guide, I'm after something a little bit beyond a bird feeder.  Feel free to enter those, but I'd like folk to stretch themselves a bit. For instance, I am, personally, very tone deaf (and I know a few older birders that are losing their hearing altogether) - can you create an app that would help me identify birds by their calls? Or is there something cool that you've done to your birding kit, and other birders try and copy? Or maybe you have a particular way of ensuring great photographs of birds in the open? There are hundreds of dollars' worth of birding equipment at stake here. Oh, and I'd appreciate those bloggers and tweeters out there to highlight the challenge as well - the more entries we get, the bigger the prizes get. (Look how excited I got - I used bigger font all the way through!) *Ha, that upset this American spell-checker!

What happend to the favorites button.

OK Who's the idiot that's trying to justify there job with the site down grade and yes it is a down grade in my opinion. This site Instuctables is my go to place for how toes , wish I'd thought of that and to share ideas learn new skills. I spent a week trying to work out what was wrong with my computer. I thought there was a setting problem or graphics card problem only to find out that it,s not my end but your end with a format update.Where to start, how bout the endless white back ground. It burns my eyes after a few minutes. the pics are way to big. What happened to the favorites button ? I have over 1100 favorites saved . I save the posts I like for reference to make review build or cook latter. But this option seems to be gone. What I would like to see is some way to save my favorites in there categories like food workshop home outdoors this would help looking for posts easier to find instead of the random order they were saved in.Is there any way to go back to the old format and let your fans choose, like ( stay on old old format or up date to new format ) but with the option to go back to the old if you don,t like it. I know the sits may have some issues that i'm not a where off and you work hard behind the seens to keep everything running smooth. I think you went to far to quick. You may loose fan over this I mite be one of them. This all may sound very harsh and it's meant to I'm try to get my point across that i don't like the new format. I only say all this out of LOVE for this site. Please don't let it fall on deaf ears. thanks JIMWI

I feel drained.....not just drained but kind of empty....UPDATED

I have been trying to "restart" my creative mind, but of late, I feel like I have had my brain replaced by a vacuum cylinder.   I am at a total loss, and even the LASER project I was working on, failed miserably.   Before going on to anything more with that, I will have to get some protective eyewear though. This is all very depressing to me....but I don't want anyone that knows me to feel badly because I do, it isn't your fault....it is partly situational and party medical (I feel like I am getting old - like my imagination is waning...). I guess PART of the problem is that the BAR KARMA project appears to be coming to an end.....with no news of whether it will be renewed next year or not......I had a LOT of fun, writing and submitting ideas to that, and even got to hear a suggested piece of music on one of the shows :-) I want to thank each of you for replying to my little mope session.....it has gotten kind of lonely in my section of the world....and it's good to know i am well thought of....thank you all.   I guess my recent failures, the mess I made of the box I  sent out in the gift exchange, the recent ambition to do something with a crystal radio....and my laser project that fizzled out....my fading eyesight, and inability to do the artwork (pyrographs) I once enjoyed doing....all has taken it's toll. To be honest, it hasn't been a LITTLE mope session, this has been going on for a few months, but has come to a head recently. What good is this deafness..... Only one? I was just going through many of my old PM's since I have kept a LOT of them, almost as far back as I can remember....so I could weed out some of them, and I have come to realize a few things:   #1:  I am DEEPLY in everyone's debt here for all they have done for me over the past few years.   In fact, that brings me to something else.... #2: I feel quite ashamed at feeling down when there are so many of you out there that care, I have NO BUSINESS feeling alone. .. it might even be considered "selfish" of me to feel that way.    And I am sorry for that.....but I do realize I am not alone, and I ACKNOWEDGE each and every one of you I have dealt with over the years. You are all VERY special to me.

Do You Believe in Fate? Read what my weekend was like

It is somewhat long, but an incredibly interesting story of what happened to me this weekend. After what I went through this weekend, my view of fate took a 180 degree turn. Some background information, I have two dogs, a few gates around my house that need to be closed to make sure my dogs stay in our yard. It starts out when I arrived home from school. My bus drops me off at the end of my driveway, and as my brother and I walk up, our mom is there with our main gate open, which usually is not. I saw her up there and knew it wasn't good. She tells me Toby is gone. Toby escaped through a back gate with my other dog Casper. My neighbor picked up Casper, but Toby was no where to be found. We pretty much scoured every single road in the area, so we knew he wasn't hit. We also told everyone we saw to keep and eye out, and asked them if they seen Toby. ~The oil company came to our house while my mom was out and about. They left our back gate open. When the dogs escaped, she went to our basement to see the oil tank, and it was full. She knew the oil people came, and they fill it through the back of our house, where our back gate is. 4 years ago, the same oil company cut our Invisible Fence Wire, and tried to tie it back together, so it worked off and on.(Which we found out later). The dog named Buddy escaped and got hit by a car. So we get the invisible fence man out here and he sees that the oil company cut our wire. ~Oil people, if you are reading this, close the gates please. ~So as you see, the oil company killed one of our dogs already, so I was fuming when I found out it was their fault again. We were planning on going to the mountains that night, so my dad, brother, and sister, and I went up with Casper, while my mom stayed at home to see if anyone would call about Toby or Toby would return home. On Saturday, we got a call from our mom saying that Toby was dropped off at an animal shelter, and she picked him up. We were ecstatic, and the rest of our day was awesome. That night, we went to bed early because none of us slept Friday night, because we were thinking about Toby. ~Thats only the half of it. Recap: Dogs escape, 1 dog found Friday, other Found at shelter Saturday, we are in mountains with Casper, and go to sleep Saturday night. I wake up Sunday morning at 5, to my brother turning the light on, and he walked out of the room. I thought, well this is weird, so I turned it off and rolled back over. My brother walked back in, and turned the light on. He told me Casper isn't moving. (In the mountains th dog sleeps with us in the bed.) I look at Casper, not moving at all. Casper is deaf, so sometimes he is always sound sleeper, but always wakes up when you touch him. I look at his face, and his eyes are in the back of his head. My brother gets my dad, my dad (doctor) tries CPR. It was too late. Casper passed away. He showed no symptoms, no struggle ( my brother didn't choke him), dandy as could be the night before, it was unbelievable. What Luck? So I am not religious what so ever, and don;t really believe in much religious stuff. But I felt that because we got Toby back, Casper had to pass away. It is so weird that the dog we thought was gone in the beginning, came back to us, while the one we had no inclination of every passing away, well, passed away. So we thought Toby was gone, got him back, and in the mountains, the one we had, died. Recap: Dogs escape, 1 found Friday, Other Picked up at shelter saturday, Casper up to the mountains, 2nd dog at home, Sunday morning Casper dies in his sleep. This weekend pretty much was the most stressful, and worst of my life. I am grateful for the man who brought Toby to the shelter, but I guess because we got Toby back, God felt it was Casper's time to go. I do not know what I'd do if we lost 2 dogs in a span of 48 hours. Thanks for reading all of this, I had to get it down. It is unbelievable. I am thinking of posting up an instructable on how to increase your chances of finding a lost dog.
