Need some room decor ideas.

My room is boring. I can do anything but paint the walls (we rent) But I CAN cover them floor to ceiling with whatever I wish. I've been looking for some kind of interesting pattern. I like bats and skulls. (realistic of both) But skulls are so overplayed, and bats seem like a far stretch to decorate with. I'm pretty artistic, and awfully handy with making stuff (especially for a 15 year old, been building my whole life.) I have a large piece of flat cardboard that backed a John Lennon Poster I recently bought, and a piece of black foamboard. I plan on taping, cutting, painting the cardboard (probably a bat design, I'm just recently getting into them) and drawing another bat on the black foamboard using silver sharpie. Sooo.... any design ideas you guys have for making things, such as any kind of wall hanging would be nice to hear about.

Ting is thrilled to partner with Instructables for the 2016 Halloween Decor Contest!

Here at Ting, we've been huge fans of Instructables for years. We actually covered the Instructables app last January as part of our featured “ App of the Week" YouTube video series, and many of us in the Tucows office (parent company of Ting) use Instructables all the time! Ting has been involved in the DIY community for awhile now, partnering with sites like Adafruit in the past, so we thought it was finally time to host a contest with Instructables. Instructables users are a great fit for Ting because, as a DIY-er, you like to be in control. Ting gives you complete control over your account, your usage and ultimately, your monthly bill. With Ting you don't pick a plan - how you use your phone determines what you pay each month. Use less? Pay less. Every month is different. Use the instructables.ting.com promo link when signing up to get $25 in account credit if you bring over your own phone or $25 off a new phone from the Ting Shop. The average bill per phone on Ting is just $23 a month, meaning your promotional credit will likely cover your first month's bill! If you'd like an unbiased opinion, feel free to check out the Ting subreddit and ask real customers their thoughts on using Ting for their mobile service. If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me an email: jesse(at)ting(dot)com Thanks again to Instructables for getting us on board and good luck with the contest! We can't wait to see your awesome creations :) Cheers, Jesse from the Ting team

Halloween Decor Contest!

Hello everyone!  Every year for the halloween contests we the staff have to draw some lines between props, costumes, and decor items.  This year we've decided to draw the lines similar to where actual theater companies draw their lines.  Believe it or not there is a prop union, costume union, and set union.  It helps to give us some firm definitions of what item goes into what contest!   This year we are defining decor as: "Anything in a space that adds to the ambiance or feel of a space.  At the same time not an item being held by someone for the purpose of supporting their costume."   Examples below with notes on each of them.  If you have any questions feel free to comment below and I'll answer you to the best of my ability! Want to enter the decor contest?  Check it out here!

Large Scale Plexiglas Photo Display

Hundreds of picture frames in a family room is overwhelming and cluttered.  Instead of having an individual picture frame for each photograph you want to show off, display all of your pictures on your wall with this plexiglas photo display found on anh-minh.  You could have a few smaller versions of this in one room.  Keep it tasteful by being conscious about where you place the displays and be sure to not clutter your walls!

individually addressable led DECORA switch

Greetings collective Instructables genius, Here's the deal, I have a kitchen,  I also have several strips of individually addressable LED's powered by the same supply.  I like the led's, I really the fade between teal and blue as it gives the impression that you're underwater.  At any rate, having anything other than a decora sized switch is out of the question.  I don't need another remote, or some box with switches on it to control the LEDs.  I'd really like a switch that can be mounted in a single gang electrical box, that can be covered by a decora faceplate.  I have a media cabinet where the power supply for the LED's is housed, and the switch can run to the supply in the cabinet.  I need at least 4 programs (like the underwater effect), though 8 would be ideal.  Any thoughts on how to approach this?  I'd spend upwards of $80 for a finished product.   Any input is appreciated.  Thank you Eric

Trying to enter Halloween Costume Contest but email keeps saying Halloween Decorations?

I'm trying to enter one of my Instructables in the Halloween Costume Contest, and it keeps being sent to the Decorations one instead. I don't understand why this is so - I've made sure I was on the Costume Contest page and not the Decorations one, and yet the emails sent to me confirming my contest entry keeps saying "Decorations". Can anybody help me with this please? I also fear I might have double clicked the button so my entry might have been sent multiple times... is this okay...?

Halloween Decoration Contest Winners - 2012

With a whooping 365 Halloween Decorations entered, the competition for this year's contest was a tough one. The editors had a hard time narrowing down the finalists. However, with the help of 13 spooky judges, winners were chosen. I would like to congratulate the winners, and thank everyone who put in the time and effort to throw their hat into the cauldron. Anyhow… on with it… I am pleased to announce that this year's winning decoration is flaming_pele!'s build of a Giant Tentacle Monster. This project was selected by the judges because it was original, fun, well-documented and approachable. With easy-to-find materials, they demonstrated that anyone can menace their neighborhood with a giant cartoonish tentacle monster. Their technique was clever, and the results were great. I foresee this inspiring more large creations next year. Speaking of which, all of our second place winners put new spins on old classics. Noelportugal made a traditional Magic Mirror, but gave it a new spin with built-in candy dispenser. HaHaBird mashed Tetris and jack-o-lanterns together to make Pumpktris, which is unlike anything we have seen before. And of course, there is kcli's the Hearse-Style Carriage which resurrects old-fashioned horse carriage as a creepy and stylish hearse. The runner-ups show how eclectic this years entries were. From traditional grim reaper decorations, to stat-of-the-art glow-in-the-dark 3D-printed ghost mobiles, we ended up with some pretty interesting decorations this year. Be sure to not only check out all of the awesome finalists, but the rest of this year's entries. Now that Halloween is over, it means that you have a full year to think about what to do next year. I now that I already am. While installing the foam spewing pumpkin, I already figured out what my decoration is going to be for next year. Let's just say that it is going to be a blast. -Randy

How to Take Down a Traverse Decorative Rod

Hello Friends, Decorative traverse rods are one way to accentuate your windows with drapery. Traverse rods enable you to open and close the drapes with a pull cord. Sometimes one or more of the rings breaks requiring replacement. Unfortunately replacing rings requires removing the traverse rod from the window. Taking down a traverse decorative rod enables you to separate the rod and remove the faulty rings. Unlike standard rods, the traverse rod fits inside a channel clip across the top of the mounting brackets. Unhook the drapes from the traverse rod master carrier. The drapes hang on metal hooks that lift out of holes in the traverse rod. Hold one end of the traverse rod with one hand and turn the decorative end cap counterclockwise with your free hand. Remove the end caps on both ends in this manner. Find the screw on the retaining clips securing the rod to the mounting clips. There is a mounting clip on each end and one in the center. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Grasp the center of the rod and lift straight up to remove it from the brackets. Pull the rod away from the wall. Thanks and Regards, Baron Davis

Colored Rice Crafts

Add a splash of colorful to any room. These colorful rice creations were originally made as Easter egg decorations.  I don't see why this technique couldn't be used to make other fun decorations as well!!  A colorful rice alphabet would look nice on a child's wall. What are some good projects for decorating a Vintage clothes store?

So, the company I'm working for just ordered me to start a clothing store in.....Manila, philipines; to function as a showroom and clothing store they hope to expand into a chain.... My life is really random. Anyway, they own a new used clothing store factory down there and will supply my stock. Everything else about the store is up to me including design and layout.  I'd love to have some instructables projects used in the store which might expand into a chain. Please recommend me some! When we start the store I'll give credit or even pay royalties to the authors

Question from the noobie :-D

Noobie here again! now I can't find a 'able that showed cardboard cut-out monsters decorating the windows of a house. I thought it would be something cheap (I'm BROKE) and easy to do, and fun to do with my 8 year old. Any ideas of which it was? I didn't save it in my faves... Sorry if I'm a bit thick.

Halloween Contests Clarification

Hey Instructables Community! I am in charge of moderating the contest entries for the Halloween Contests; this is to just clarify some things in case you are wondering why you were rejected from a contest. -------------------------- You cannot enter the same Instructable into both the Epic and Easy Costume Contests.  If you are not sure which one to enter, go ahead and enter both and I'll make the call. You cannot enter the same Instructable into both the Decorations and Props Contest.  Props relate to costumes while decorations are simply decorations. Any Halloween Photo Instructable qualifies for the Halloween Photo Contest. Food can also qualify as a Decoration. If you have a Costume with an awesome Prop, it would be best to post them in different Instructables so you can enter each in its corresponding contest.   And don't forget, you can enter up to 3 contests, so read through the contests descriptions when you go to publish and enter any and all it qualifies for! You can enter each contest as many times as you want! The Contests: Epic - Costumes that take more than a day to make if you were to work on it that whole time, we're looking for something that is EPIC! Take a look at the current entries for an idea of what we're talking about.  (If you are rejected from Epic it doesn't mean you don't have an awesome costume, it just means we're looking for something more EPIC.) Easy - Costumes that take about a day or less to make. Props - Something that is part of a costume (meaning, worn or held), including, but not limited to: facepaint/makeup, hairstyles/wigs, swords/sheilds, and masks. Decoration - Something that you would not carry around including lawn and home decor. Photo - Any Halloween Photo Instructable Food - Anything that is food that relates to Halloween Any Questions?   Please leave a comment here or PM me, I'm happy to help out :)

Decorating with Photography...

Found this company, Juicywalls, online. They make custom designed wallpaper and canvas prints of really high quality (and pretty cheap, for the type of product). You can determine the precise size of the prints or measurements for wallpaper, which is great, but the really cool aspect is that you can upload your own photography for these products. It's high quality digital printing, so the image is super clear and sharp. They also offer an option for photographers to sell their work from their own site, with an application called the Walldesigner. You integrate the code into your website, and sell your photography, and Juicywalls makes the product, deals with all the customers, and handles the payment and shipping. Seems like a really cool way to either get your photography out there, or just do some cool, personalized decorating! The website is http://www.juicywalls.com

Ideas for apartment for college living!

Hey everyone! I'm about to move into a new house for my senior year of college and I was wondering if there were any cool ideas for decorations that we can put up. An example would be like the hanging bottles with lights on them for our outside porch, easy and would look extremely legit. Unfortunately that is where all my ideas end so I was wondering if anyone else could share how they decked out their living space. Thanks!

MASH-UPS?

Does anyone else seem to think that a lot of the entries here are not technically mash-ups. I entered one that, the more I think about, isn't really a mash-up. Sure I combined a couple of things to make something new, but unless you consider turning two decorative things into a third decorative thing a "mash-up", I'm not entirely sure it fits this contest. I'm working on something that I think will be more appropriate, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

How would you describe your decorating style? (tick all that apply) Modern Classic Kitch Bohemian Shabby Chic Industrial Other (please state) 10. Which brands do you buy furniture from? (state all that apply) 11. Which brands do you buy paint, DIY tools and materials from? (state all that apply) 12. On a scale of 1 to 10 (where 1 is not important and 10 is very important) how important is having unique and personalised features and accessories in your home to you? 14. Would you be interested in the idea of somewhere to take your old furniture that would provide materials and workshops to help you upcycle it into something new and original? Any answers you provide would really help and will be used only for research purposes. If you would prefer to email me your answers my email address is althexton@uclan.ac.uk. Thank you in advance! WANTED: Recipe for Clear Gel or Glaze (ala Wilton Sparkle Gel)

I recently made my first trial batch of Unicorn Poop, but I ran into a problem!  I tried using the Wilton Sparkle Gel as suggested, and it *looks* fantastic... but it *tastes* bad.  D:  I wasn't sure if it was just me, so I tried it out on my beau, and then a couple of co-workers.  The verdict: plain cookies tasted better than the Wilton-covered cookies.  Oh no!!  That means that my Unicorn Poops will look old and crusty, instead of wet and sparkly!  (The horror, amirite?) I'd like to "glaze" them so that they can hold onto all the sparkles and decorations that make them so whimsical (as if rainbow colored poop cookies need the help!!) but I don't want to share cookies that taste sub-par because of the decorations. Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'd like to make my own glaze, and ideally it would "harden", or at least dry "unsticky" (not a word) so that transporting them wouldn't be a hassle.  Maybe glycerin?  Light corn syrup?  I'm open to suggestion!
