Build your own demo of a particle accelerator!

This was originally posted by an I'bles user in the "Feedback" forum. I've suggested he repost his questions under Science, and hope to answer them there. In the mean time, this video from the March 2008 issue of Symmetry Magazine (a joint SLAC/Fermilab publication) is really cute. The original article's video includes a bunch of related items which are worth checking out themselves. The high voltage (at least 50kV, I think) DC supply needs to be pretty stable -- you can't just throw a rectifier bridge onto a wall cord, but other than that, the project would be extremely simple to build. I've sent Dr. Johnson an e-mail to see if I can get more detailed specs. Update 4 Jan 2009: Todd Johnson and I have exchanged a couple of e-mails about this project (d**n, I love the collegiality of the scientific world!). For the DC power supply, he used a potted module (i.e., an enclosed unit with no accessible or dangerous components) designed for use in a negative ion generator (like the "Ionic Breeze"). He bought the unit surpus from http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G9695 . The bowl you see in the video was custom made from acrylic. I thought something like a Pyrex mixing bowl would work, but the "corner" where the flat base joins the spherical body introduces a barrier to the ball doing what it should do. The coating on the ping-pong ball is something called http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G16133 "wire glue"], touted as a substitute for solder. For this project, he covered the conductive paint with some clear Krylon for protection. Dr. Johnson and I are discussing the possibility of collaborating on an Instructable for this project. As a result of the video publicity, he's already gotten some inquiries on how to build it, so this would be an appropriate venue. He has a substantial amount of performance data and physics background on the device, which we will include in the ultimate publication.

Audible frequency amplitude modulation of 20kHz carrier for diffraction demo. Answered

I am attempting to build an audio projector that takes advantage of the low diffraction of high frequency audio waves. Audible range frequencies diffract more than, say 20kHz, so I want to modulate a 20kHz carrier wave by an audible range source, hoping that the carrier wave will be maintained for longer distances (like a beam of sound), and that my ear will ultimately perceive the audible input being delivered on the carrier wave. My question is: Should I be aiming to produce an AM Radio type modulation that has an envelope of the input both above and below, mirrored across the x axis? Or should I try to make it so the final signal has the same shape as the source wave, just filled in with 20kHz carrier? Also, is a square wave carrier sufficient, or will it need to be a sine wave?

Demo (Contractor) Bags Are Sometimes Better than Garbage or Other Bags

Folks use garbage bags for storing and hauling .  Problem is, garbage bags rip easily and usually are good for one use. Demo bags are woven from polypropelene and are strong and  can be re-used.. Haul one load, dump it, bring the bag back,  Refill and repeat. Or use it for moving. No worries about ripping. They are not waterproof or completely dustproof. So one may wish to line it with a plastic bag. http://ecobrooklyn.com/demo-bags-trash-bag-alternative/ I think I may try to use this as a potato bag for growing potatoes a described in an earlier instructable

Looking for a specific Instructable - Video effect with demo cycle ride to RadioShack.? Answered

Probably 18 months ago or thereabouts, someone posted a processing  technique to give an effect which I remember as similar to a blurred version of the David Hockney photo sequences, only on video.  He posted a demo video which I'm pretty sure was a bike ride to his local RadioShack.   I've spent a looong time trekking back and pushed the Instructables search engine to its limits, but no joy.   Can anyone put their finger on this Instructable for me?

Physics puzzle games- Auditorium, World of Goo and Crayon Physics

I really like puzzle games. I've played two that are really addictive and beautifully made, and found another that looks great.AuditoriumAuditorium has a free on line demo. I've played through the levels a few times. The full game hasn't been published yet.The screen has a stream of light particles flowing into it. You have one, or more, buttons that will affect the path of the particles: like one that bends the light stream to the right, or one that pulls it into a vortex. You move the buttons around to steer the stream into boxes that are scattered around the screen. There are many particles in the stream, and by careful placement of the buttons, you can split them into different paths. When you hit the boxes with light particles a new group of instruments join a symphony you hear. The goal is to get all of the instruments playing.Some levels have areas that will change the color of the light particles as they pass. Some of the music boxes are different colors, and you will have to route the light particles through the color changer before you send them it into the box. Try it out, the free online demo will make it very clear. I didn't even look at the directions. It's easy to find your way as you go. I love a game like that.PlayAuditorium.comWorld of GooIn World of Goo, you have to stick living gooey balls together to make lattice and build some kind of structure (tower, bridge, rope, ...) that allows the gooey balls to reach the end of a pipe that sucks them up. The Gooey structures are not stiff. If you don't build your structure carefully it will bend and can collapse under its own weight. It is a 2D game with a comic book style to the graphics. There is also a level designer and an online community where you can share new levels. I haven't experimented with these yet - I'm still working through the levels that came with the game.There is a downloadable demo for both PC and Mac. There is also a WII version for sale.It is drawn and designed beautifully. Totally addictive.2dboy.comCrayon PhysicsI haven't played this yet but it looks really great.The graphics look like they were drawn by a 5 year old with a box of crayons. When you get to a level, it presents a drawn scene with a star and a ball (it's actually an apple. Must be a tribute to Newton) somewhere in it. You have to draw some kind of mechanism, or ramp, or some objects, or... As you are drawing, the objects develop mass.Everything you draw then reacts with gravity. You have to harness the momentum you get from everything dropping to the ground in order to push, throw, drop or guide the ball so it hits the star.Look at the video it is self explanatory. How to rig a capacitive touch to a usb keyboard (or gamepad)?

I need to make a touch sensitive (capacitive) button that triggers a key. I got a capacitive demo board from qprox that should be fine...I touch it and I can hook it up to an LED that gets lit. But if I try to put the wires from a button on a gamepad to the out of the demo board, the button is constantly in the "Down" state. I think I remember reading somewhere about a polarity reverser or something so that it reverses the On and Off state, but not sure what I need. Also, the demo board is powered via a small watch battery which is perhaps conflicting with the power from the USB? I'm not quite sure the best way to do this. I think I can power the demo board using the USB power rather than the battery. I also would like some advice on creating the Capacitor to a 3" button surface are that goes through 1/4" glass. I've got a resistor that upped the Qs so that it works through glass, but not sure how to make it fit to a desired "button" shape.

Issue with Arduino's Mouse.Move()

I am using the new Arduino Due to try and move a mouse on my Macbook pro. On the Arduino website it says that I should be able to just add numbers into Mouse.move(xVal, yVal, wheel). I have tried adding numbers in the xVal and yVal positions ranging from .5 to 1000000, but the mouse never moves. I also am trying to use the code that they have on their website as demo code which takes in voltages from analog ports and puts them into the xVal and yVal. I have set it up with two 1K resistors in series with the analog inputs going into A0 and A1 with a voltage supply of 2.1 V. The amount the mouse moves should depend on how much voltage is entering the Arduino, but I am only getting -6 to 6 V coming into the Arduino. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to make the mouse move with Arduino's demo program or just in general? Thank you so much for the help. Link to Arduino demo code: http://arduino.cc/en/Reference/MouseMov ... lock#=1 My code: void setup() { Serial.begin(4800); Mouse.begin(); } void loop() { if (analogRead(0) > 500) { Serial.println("Hello"); Mouse.move(100,100,0); } else { Serial.println("Goodbye"); Mouse.move(-100,-100,0); }

1st time robot. Too ambitious?

Hello All, I have recently started an ambitious project. There will certainly be much learning along the way.  But it is too ambitious? The goal is to build a bot that can be controlled remotely, to aid in the detection, marking, and ultimate removal of unexploded ordinance in Cambodia (in this first application).  Though I have never built a robot of any type, I am quickly learning the basics, but would like ultimate beginner advice if anyone had any.  If anyone would like details on the project, PM me.  It's really a lot for a forum post... If there are any Veterans or military buffs out there, I could really use other first hand accounts of experiencing UEO. Through generous donation and aquisition, I have come cross an electric wheelchair, and many parts needed for a former "Battle-Bot".  Battle-bot turns peace-maker.  I love it!  The motors are Bosche, 24V and ~750watts.  Included were DC motor (high amp) speed controls, and 2x 12v 26A sealed lead-acid batteries.  Very very excited to really dig in.  I lack a quality track or model of a good track to use for traction, etc.  Anyone know of any good and sturdy RC tank tracks I could look at for design or actual construction? Though I began to construct my own track out of sheet metal and various materials available (it actually turned out kinda ok), I don't intend on reinventing the wheel, as it were.  3" took me almost 2 hours. Will also be incorporating a ~3'-4' rotating and articulating arm.  Trying to keep its weight to under ~30lbs.  The wheelchair frame is very strong and moddable, Ws thinking of using a lazy susan type bearing, but I'm not sure I could find one rated for that weight for an affordable price.  Any suggestions? Thanks for checking this out.  Again, if you want more details, I'm happy to share my plans.  Just PM me. This is being designed 100% open-source, and 100% documented with a video and written journal in order to be easily duplicated.   Constructive criticism is NOT personal criticism! Huck

Best program for creating 3D models

Ok I want to make a 3D model for printing, what is the best program to use.  I have Maya 2013 (DEMO) , and 3DSMax 2013 (DEMO), and sculptris 6.  What program is the best to create and convert for 3D printing.  I want to enter in the new 3D Printing contest and if I make something 3D I want it to work on someones printer for them to print.  Plus if the software can make it fool proof, I don't want to make a model that won't print, and don't really know what is possible and what is not. Any help would be great.  Biggest concern it converting it over to 3D printing format, and making a model that would be able to be printed (with lets say makerbot, or the most common 3D Printer able to be printed by anyone). Thank you in advance.

How to download data into the PICAXE 18m2 ?

In a physics demo, my teacher used a small coilgun,  but it used low voltage AC, not a single high voltage burst, also it used an aluminum ring on the outside of the coil instead of a slug on inside of it. Apparently the AC creates a changing magnetic field, which induces current in the ring giving it a magnetic field as well...
