Dvd player is a tad loud

I gots a question, I have this Panasonic X410 dvd player, it's a real nice unit for 1999, and makes a real nice big single disc cd player..but on my stereo when I play music, it keeps lighting up the peak indicator on my reciever, which probably isn't too good to do that often. I wanted to know if there was a way to "tune" this thing down a bit as far as the line level outputs, but there's not onscreen volume control that I can find. Also, I'm fairly pertubed as to why there's two sets of video rca outputs and two sets of the audio jacks, respectivly, set side beside each other. There's no specific labeling of their function other than just video and audio out, not video 2 or nothing and I don't remember any mentioning of in the manual a few years back when I still had it. This unit has a nice 10 bit video dac with a 24 bit audio decoder (96khz something), I really want to hear what the fibre optic on it sounds like, but hey I can't afford a $3,000 amplifier right now, does anyone know of any kind if "converter" or way I could install a fibre optic board I can get my hands on into my surround sound unit I have now. Ideas ideas, I guess I have spring fever eh?

Pre-historic Video Amplifier Antennas useless?!

I've been learning quite a bit about video amplifiers recently. And it's brought me to a question. When antennas were the source of video-signal, you would often hear horror stories of people having to get up off of their couch to adjust the "bunny ears", to get a clearer signal. I'm just confused. Why would they have to be adjusted? The signals, if my understanding is correct, is electrical signals sent through the air, and the signal would cover thousands of feet. It surely didn't matter if the antenna was all but a few inches from one spot or another. The signal should be able to hit it just the same no matter what, correct? If you are in a car, it's one thing - you're moving. But in a house, you're stationary. Any explanation?

Any ideas on an in-ear white noise device to help stutterers/stammerers?

Hi, This is my first post. I don't know much about this kind of tech but am eager to learn.  I want to build a hidden/discrete wireless earpiece which can play a short burst of white noise (1-2 seconds) when a button is pressed (see below for an explanation of why on earth I want to do this). The button would need to be able to trigger the white noise from a range of around 1 metre so that the controller can be kept in my trouser pocket. There are earpieces around which play white noise (to help people sleep in noisy environments) but I want to be able to control whether or not the white noise is playing. I thought about using a wireless earpiece (e.g.) with bluetooth, however it seems like the maximum range for this would be around 40cm. Anyone know of alternatives?  WHY WOULD I WANT TO?! Individuals who stutter/stammer often experience blocks. It's not that you'll hear them repeating sounds or anything - their speech just totally freezes up. For reasons which aren't entirely clear, listening to white noise can help stutters who block to start talking. White noise can be played before trying to speak, disrupting our auditory feedback - resulting in less blocks. Some devices have made use of this, e.g. Edinburgh Masker (http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/edinburghmasker.html), but were ugly, bulky and didn't allow you to manually control when the white noise was playing. Other devices, like SpeechEasy make use of Delayed Auditory Feedback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_fluency_device#Delayed_auditory_feedback) - which can help some people but is of no use if you aren't already making some kind of noise. Is this impossible?  Many thanks for anyone with ideas on this! Cheers Oli

Upside Down Heart Earrings

Hey guys! Just like to share something new I learned :) Obviously, it's a heart shape earring but what's interesting is how to create it and how to slide in the bead at the center of the heart. I had fun creating this cute thing from watching the video by Ross Barbera. I can't share the steps here as it's not my own, but if you like to find out how to do it you can watch it HERE. Cheers!

Where do I find a base to make my own stud earrings?

I want to glue (or whatever you recommend) buttons and other small knick-knacks onto some type of stud earring base.I'm not sure if this is it (the 2nd from the left): http://www.silverenchantments.com/bezel-cups-sterling-silver.htmlbecause it's a "cup", possibly designed for a gemstone or something? I was looking for a sort of flat surface w/ a post coming out (and a backing of course) to glue vintage buttons on. Seems pretty easy to me, any precaution? I don't have a glue gun... will superglue work, or is there some sticky crafty substance I don't know about that would stand the test of time?

CAT PROOFING MY JEWELRY ETC....

I have a multi-toed (Polydactal) cat blessed with the ability to access most anything, and even open cabinets and drawers that slide open and shut. I have quite a few sets of earrings (by a few I mean close to 50ish) - I probably wear a variety of about 4 now because it's too hard to keep the favorites out and visible without my cat also seeing and being able to access them.  I saw some earring display ideas on the site, however, I really want to make something that is easy on the eyes but not something that becomes the center of attention in the room.  HELP!!!!

Proximity Sensor 1' - 25'; Bat Ears for a Blind Woman

First of all, I'm a noob in electronics, so please explain your jargon as you would to a 3 year old. I am smart & learn quickly. So, I really want to make my blind 80 year-old grandmother a pair of bat ears. I bought her one of those sonic distance measureres from home-depot because of the barely audible tic they send out to bounce off wall/etc and record the time it takes the signal to return. You can hear the tic, and with your eyes closed.. you can kinda tell how far things are away from you just by listening. She loves it, and it just barely.. kinda works. What I"m shooting for is a single over-ear headphone (xbox-live communicator style) with some type of proximity sensor attached, sending a constant signal to the headphone... low for long distances, gradually higher for gradually closer distances. Any reasonable suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Low-cost hearing aid for someone old

I know an old person--well, okay, my mom--who refuses to wear an in-ear hearing aid, even though she clearly needs it. For whatever reasons, she thinks its too expensive/too invasive/doesn't want to be bothered, even though Medicaid would probably pay for it etc. Not wanting to be reduced to shouting like I'm on an aircraft deck, I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to some sort of inexpensive amplifying device I could rig from some some more or less readily available parts. I'm envisioning something like the old style opera glasses on a long handle, though of course this device would be held to the ear (maybe like the old fashioned ear trumpet come to think of it). This way it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for her. I'm suggesting this arrangement rather than headphones of some sort, which again would isolate her (visually) from the rest of the folks at the old age home. If she could just hold something to her ear when she wanted to hear/converse and then drop it when she doesn't want to be clued in...well, that might be the way to proceed. As usual, low-cost design wins, as I don't have that much to spend. Thanks!

My accordion!

I received an accordion from my dad not too long ago, it is a very old model that he received from one of his patients (he's a neurologist) who was a polka player. I've been teaching myself by ear and can play a few songs already using the keyboard side. The other side has 120 bass buttons that confuzzle me. Since the accordion is older is takes a lot more pumping when I'm trying to learn songs by ear so I was wondering if there was a way to attach a vacuum pump or something to make it work without the pumping motion while I'm trying to figure out notes. The accordion has various holes on it that I believe let air in and out.

Credit card crystal radio

What do you think about the feasibility of a credit card sized crystal radio? (Fits inside a wallet) Some possible i though so far are... A simple pcb with a diode, and a capacitor and a coil wrapped(protected by duct tape) around it. The antenna has to be tied to a hole on a corner. Or it is coiled to the card, ready to be unwrapped. The ear piece can either be external... Or can be glued to the card itself, but you must put the card near you ear... Instead of a winded coil, maybe it can be part of the pcb design itself... and to tune it, you unhook a beady wire and place it in the holes placed in a interval. What do you think? Any more ideas? In fact. a competition can be made for this idea.

Recording ultrasonic sound

I looked up at bat detector, a device that converts ultrasonic signals into audible sounds. Most bats produce high frequency calls which are often higher than a human ear can pick up. A bat detector picks up the frequencies and then converts the sound into a lower, audible frequency. I was thinking if I could get a bat detector, I use it to capture the ultrasonic sounds. While bat detector could pick up these high frequencies, it would be interesting to see how it will pick up the faintly heard, to human ears - sounds of the industrialised areas/city or even at isolated/quiet areas. The bat detector I want to use is this - http://www.magenta2000.co.uk/acatalog/B ... _Bat4.html I'm thinking of hooking up the bat detector to a digital recorder and a binaural microphone and capture the sound through those equipments. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions/opinions on this matter.

Liquid nitrogen at the doctor

No real point to this but I wanted to post anyways because it is kinda cool.  Went to the doctors office with my wife today because she had this spot on her ear that was bothering her.  Well the doctor wanted to freeze it with liquid nitrogen to get rid of it.  Well of course my ears perked right up because to be honest this was going to be the same time I was even in the same room as this *cool* stuff.  I asked her to pack some up for me to take home.  She laughed and said she wished she could but did not have anything to transport it with.  But she brought in a styrofoam cup about half full of it.  She used a quetip to apply it to the spot on the ear three times.  Then handed me the cup and said "I know the geek inside you wants to play with it.".  Our doctor knows us well.  But the bummer part was that I did not have anything to put in it.  So since the only thing I had to freeze was myself I put the quetip on my finger.  ......Yes this hurt.  But it was still fun.  Then I was left to just watch it boil and then blow on it once in a while.  But when we were leaving I handed the cup back to her since I figured I could not leave with it and it was almost gone anyways.  Then she said something she liked to do with it was to pour it on the floor.  I was pretty cool to watch the "fog" it kicked up and listen to the floor crackle. Anyways, that is my story of the day.  I did not get to do much with it, but it was still *cool*.

successful 5th pulsejet

Hello everybody,i think you all remember me "the pulsejet guy" atlast made my fifth successful pulsejet engine after doing some research on the design. so you all remember that i made this engine before. http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1109952/21062011199.jpg the above engine is a 4 inch dia engine,so now with the same dia i made a highly tuned chinese type which produces more thrust when compared to the previous design..At first i failed at starting then i made some changes in the tailpipe and got it running successfully.. here is the engine. http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1109955/23072011291.jpg And the sound produced in this engine is comparably high its annoying annoying irritating ear bleeding and produces high vibrations..so should be little careful wit your ears.. and finally here is the video take a look at it..see you all in next pulsejet video,a bigger one..

Mag-safe type Audio Connector for Headphones?

Would it be possible to make a Magsafe-like cable for headphones? I'm always either editing video or listening to music while on the desktop in my family's living room. In order to not disturb everyone, I use headphones. But getting up time after time is very much a pain when I have to pull my headphones off, set them down, then head off to wherever in the house I need to go. (Kitchen, toilet, etc...) I think I've come up with a solution that would make things a lot easier. The end of the heaphone cable is normal. Standard 3.5mm. But the other end, which is usually hidden away in the left ear cup all stripped and leading to different speakers, is seperated from the ear cup, and connects and stays on with magnets! The only problem is that I'm not quite sure what to do to make this...anyone have any ideas?

Guess who got not one, but two puppies? :D And guess who has absolutely no clue as to what to name them? Yeah, that'd be me. So what do you think are some good puppy names? Here's a picture of them, one has an ear that sticks straight up and the other has an upside down white triangle on his forehead. Oh yeah, they're both boys.

However, "locking" puts no special message on the visible topic....so if you attempt to find the "reply" button, it isn't present in the locked thread, so, for all the world the forum software looks "broken". Follow the money. War profiteers have no morality , This weekend take the time to listen to a vet. Just listen, let them tell what war was like and the discussing how they have been treated when they returned. The art of listening with your ears listen to their voices. Eyes what are you seeing in the faces? look real close to their eyes. What are you feeling in your heart ?

Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds

I REALLY want Wireless headphones, but the caveat is that I want them to be earbuds.  I've seen people do all sorts of things to the big bulky ones, but I need these for stealth; I wanna listen to music in school! haha Don't try and tell me I ought to be studying either! =P The original plan was to use an RF transmitter and a RF receiver for each earbud, but RF modulation is static-ey and is subject to a LOT of interference. So the alternative is Bluetooth or other means of digital modulation.  I can't find a way to make your own "bluetooth" per se, leaving the only option to cannibalize another bluetooth device. Below is a quick sketch of what I had in mind.  I know there's more to it like resistors and whatnot, but I'll let you folks figure that stuff out. XD The idea is that the headphone hook around your ear and the receiver will hang off the back of your ear.  If you have any questions, just ask! =D Thanks for your help!!
