Pawpaw - to eat or not to eat?

Now that the tree in the backyard is showing first signs of fruits developing I was able to determine that it is a pawpaw tree. After my first surprise that I might enjoy some nice and delicious fruits this summer I asked my friend Google for more details. Shouldn't have done that.... I think in the Us the family of these are usually refered to as Asimina. The bad thing is I now know that not only the tree itself, the leaves and seeds contain Annonacin but the flesh of the fruit too. In some research documents the found levels in the fruits seem to by sky high :( People trying the fruit for the first time are usually totally over the moon due to the new tase or get adverse reactions right away. After a season of eating the fruits several times a week most people claim they now longer can stand their taste and if they try anyway they regret it quickly. The health benefits are quite obvious if you only think of the good stuff in it, but what to do with the levels of Annonacin accumulating in your body and causing vital neurons in your brain to suffer permanant damage and death? As the tree is native to the US I quickly found that the indiginous tribes widely used both the leaves and fruits. But I was unable to find any info on how much, how often or if the fruits were treated in some way to get rid of the toxins. One way or the other I have to teste them once ripe and ready but if I do like them I would love to able to continue eating without loosing the rest of my insanity ;) Anyone eating them on a regular base? Suffering from side effects? Already over it for some reason? Let me know! :)

Eating Meat and Overpopulation

I'm not try to start a flame war just wanna bounce some Ideas around. If everyone stopped eating meat and animal products (total vegan). What would happen to the animal population. I think at first it would increase dramatically, then after humans started to consume more and more fruits and vegetables there would be a shortage of food ether for humans or animals (most likely animals). Which would cause a sharp decrees in animal population (possible extinction of species lower on the chain). Or if there is not enough fruits and vegies for humans, they will be forced to eat animals. What do you think?

Forum eats replies

I've seen it happening before, and it's happening again for me now: I can't reply to certain forum posts even though they have a reply button. My reply just gets eaten and doesn't post; the page reloads and everything I've typed is gone, the page looks as if I've just opened that forum thread. An example is the latest posting on the thread about international entries in contests: I can't reply to the user from Taiwan who is asking whether s/he can enter. There is no error message or anything. This is frustrating and makes me not want to use the forums anymore. If it helps: I'm using SeaMonkey on XP. Can anyone enlighten me? Edited to add: it looks like I can't even post a new message (this one). I keep ending up on a blank page. I gave it several tries but it didn't work... then, ten minutes later, it worked.

bearded dragon won't eat

I just got a bearded dragon and i had him in a 10 gallon tank. i realized it would be much too small for him eventually so i moved him into a 60 gallon tank. its about a constant 85-90 degrees and his basking area is about 100. humidity is at about 40%. i am aware all of the controversey of using crushed walnut, but its a pretty fine grain and not sharp at all, i will replace this if i must. my dragon today isn't eating very well, he is healthy and moving around alot but he won't eat like he used to. just curious if any one has suggestions. i know about the problems with crushed walnut but i dont think that would have much to do with his appetite and i also cant seem to get him to eat any thing but crickets, i have tried alot of different veggies and what not but its all he will touch.... any help would be much appreciated thanks

If I don't sign in tomorrow morning, I am in the hospital :-) it is said that only sensitive people will be effected by the toxins......nice ! :-(UPDATE: I seem not to be sensitive nor particularly vulnerable to this toxin probably because I have ingested so many raw baby portabellas from salad bars :-)

Nepenthes attenboroughii (named after Sir David Attenborough) is way bigger than those relatively tame plants, and dissolves its prey with "acid-like enzymes". From the article: "The plant is among the largest of all pitchers and is believed to be the largest meat-eating shrub, dissolving rats with acid-like enzymes.">Whimper<Call me cowardly, but I get the willies when we start discovering plants that can eat small rodents...who knows what else is out there in the as-yet-unexplored areas of the jungle...Link

Eating Burnt Food And Cancer? Is there a connection.

I have insisted for years that the major cause of Cancer, is the way we cook our food especially meat, and any food cooked in hot-oils. I believe that eating burnt food is the leading cause of the cancer scourge seen throughout the world. I imagine you might be thinking "I have never eaten burnt food", or "No one I know, ever eats or serves burnt food." To this I say your wrong and to prove it, I want you for the next 30-days to examine very closely any meat you are served, you will find its often covered in burnt oven marks, and as a further point of interest look at how clean the baker’s oven or grill is?. You could be in for a shock.Examine grilled hamburgers first, then sausages, and next time you’re in a supermarket go to the bread section and look at the underside of two or three loafs of bread being sold, and examine the bottom (of them) for burnt areas. In your own home I want you to take a sharp knife and cut off these burnt areas you find, and try to roughly estimate how much burnt food is served annually in well populated nations, those which today are suffering huge cancer deaths. I have seen in New York restaurants adverts stating CHARRED steaks served here, I have met people who claim they love the taste of burnt meat (they say it adds extra flavour) I say it adds Cancer, and it is the leading cause of cancer in the world. I will leave it to you to figure out for yourself whether you should eat cigarettes (by smoking them) since 30% of all smoke-eaters get lung disease? Burnt meat, burnt cigarettes, if figures that there must be connection.

I can only eat small bites of food

Let me just get it out of the way, I have a genetic deformity. My Esophagus is VERY small. Mashed Potatoes get stuck in my throat (without choking though,) So today, I was looking forward to going to Wendy's for the first time in 3 months. So, I took 1 bite of my Spicy chicken sandwich... Swallowed, and took another bite. As soon as I took my second bite, I felt the first bite get stuck, so since it happens when i eat ANYTHING, I don't panic and take a drink of my coke.... I forget about the food stored in my cheek. The stored food in my cheek goes down my throat with the coke on top. I am in serious pain, and my breath is so short, I barely had enough time to *I can't breath*. My mom tells me to put my arms in my air, so I do. My dad come up behind me and squeezes my stomach... the food that I was choking on kept flip-flopping between my windpipe and throat. Finally, It gets out of my windpipe and into my throat... I run to the bathroom... I belch up out 4 mouth fulls of chewed up chicken sandwhich and coke. The chicken was stuck in my throat (but not choking) for about an hour. Finally, I decide to drink water and it slips down my throat... Now, I feel like I am learning to eat all over again. Everyone wanted to go to a diner at 10 pm... so I go, scared to eat (odd, huh?). I get the grilled cheese with a pickle and fries. About half an hour later, everyone is putting their food into boxes to take home... I haven't even touched my second half of grilled cheese. I chew everything into applesauce - like cider. Luckily, my dad, who also had this problem as a child, has a doctor who stretched his throat out, and when I get older, I will get that done to me. My mom and brother laugh about my incident... but now, I am still in shock and having trouble eating...

Hunting rabbit?

So, I know you're not supposed to hunt rabbit during the summer, because of diseases and parasites, but what if they seem healthy? Like no fleas, bots, spots on the liver, etc. Yes I do want to eat them, and yes it is legal in this area because they are simply destroying my moms garden, and she asked if I could take care of it. However, since I don't want them to go to waste, I wanna eat em! Would they be safe to consume?

Just curious... Does Instructables have a 'best of' cookbook??

We seem to have a giant collection of some very 'tasty' recipes on here. Wouldn't it be great to have them in a cookbook-like form, categorized. Even a quick cookbook vs traditional cook-time book. The instructables format even gives the novice cook an almost foolproof set of instructions which would make it soooo easy for someone to impress their guests.

How to Make and Eat a Nine-Egg Breakfast

The secret is quail eggs. I found the quail eggs' membranes tougher than expected, and I had to pinch them to actually crack open the eggs. Quail eggs taste more "like eggs" than standard chicken eggs -- like the difference between a factory-farmed egg and an egg from my neighbor's chickens that eat grubs all day. You can hard boil them too. I started the eggs in cold water, heated it until boiling, let it boil for 1 minute, and then turned the heat off let the eggs sit in the hot water for 7 minutes. Finally, I quickly cooled them under cold water, and the shells were easy to peel.

What did you cook/eat last?

I just like reading about this. I'm a nerd. Today I ate channa masala with rice. I'm cooking kheer (rice pudding) right now, and I made some chocolate-chocolate chip-chocolate mint glaze cookies earlier. Tomorrow morning I'm making some sugar cookies with sugar coated fennel seeds as sprinkles. I thought about that eariler today, and it just sounded SO good. I have a party tomorrow night. I normally don't make so many sweets. :P

Topic by jessyratfink 10 years ago  |  last reply 9 years ago

What do you normally eat for breakfast?

I'm sorry, I just can't stop talking about food. :PI was reading the latest issue of Saveur magazine last night and this morning, and it has to be one of the most interesting things I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's all about breakfast, which is quite frankly the most important and wonderful meal of the day. The magazine had a number of different articles about what people eat for breakfast all over the world, in addition to recipes for all these magical foods I'd never heard of. :DI typically don't have much time these days between work and school, so my breakfast is usually whole wheat toast with butter and raspberry, orange or apricot preserves, maybe some sunflower butter. I almost always have tea in the morning - I think my favorite is coconut chai at the moment. If I'm really short for time I'll have my standard soy milk and mega fiber hippie cereal. :)If I do have time though, I'll make biscuits and gravy or sometimes Jace will make pancakes. I've only made french toast once with friends, but I'd like to get that going more often. I also really like to heat up different soy sausages and have those with toast and hot cereal. I also like having hot multigrain cereal with apples cut up in it, with cinnamon and honey. That will never get old.So what do you eat for breakfast? I want to know all about it!
