Edmund Scientific: Question

Has Edmund Scientifics (originally Edmund Science) bee taken over by a company outside the USA? The only reason I ask is that, I was reading down through the Geek Tech stuff, and when I went to descriptions, I found stuff like this: The Privacy Safe can detect the strength of radio frequency generated by different types of LED signal indicator such as wireless video camera. When a suspicious object is approached or located, the "Red" light will be on and the alarm will beep continuously. The superb bright torch could illuminate allows you to find things or read in the dark. That nearly drove me to distraction reading grammar like this from a supposedly scientific catalog. I remember when I was much younger, you couldn't even find a misspelled word in their catalogs, now I can hardly read them without wincing . Anyone know what happened?

Dr. Who - Voyage of the Da**ed - dedication

I know this is old news, but it is NEW to me.   I just finished viewing The Voyage of the Damned, episode of Dr. Who and at the end, there was a dedication to Verity Lambert, OBE  (27 November 1935 – 22 November 2007), She is best known as the founding producer of the science fiction series Dr. Who.

Ratings are temporarily Funky

We have just released a new version of the site, with some changes to the way we rate instructables. Ed (our own fungus amungus) will be giving you all a bit more detail on that soon, but at the moment just know that there is Big Calculation going on behind the scenes, and ratings are going to be behaving a little weird for a couple hours. You may not notice anything but if you do, don't worry, it's Normal. Trust me. I'm a scientist.

Problem with Virtual Patches database?

Did something go wrong with the Virtual Patches database at the turn of the year? Ed had given my my patch for the Best-of-I'bles book, but now it's gone (I still have the Robot Art patch). I've checked a couple of other users known to have the book, and the patch is missing from their profiles as well. UPDATE: This morning, everything seems to be back to normal. Should have updated before Noah took up his time posting :-/

Vanishing forum topic -- created by "add topic" in Group, but not appearing

About 20 minutes ago, I created a forum topic https://www.instructables.com/community/My-chemistry-textbook-was-right-all-along/. I went to the Physics Group and used the + new topic link to create the posting, classifying it in Forums : Science. The topic is not showing up in the Community "recent" listing, even after I added a bump-comment myself. How on Earth do you make a china ball paper latern?

I have searched all over the internet for a simple how-to when it comes to making those sphere-shaped lanterns , and no one seems to have bothered to do any. I'm interested in making some large ones but the first attempt didn't have that clean round look. Has anyone made one or know of a tutorial? Hopefully one with pictures or video.  thanks!

30-day project: A drawing every day

Inspired by Ed's post on "30-day projects", I decided to jump in: I'll make a drawing every day. I enjoy drawing a lot, but I rarely take the time or opportunity to do it. So, thanks to Ed, here I go. I started on Aug. 12, so the 30th drawing will be posted shortly after Sept. 11. To make it a little easier for myself, I made up some "rules": In thirty days, 30 drawings must be made Skipping one day is allowed, but the drawing that wasn't made must be made on another day within the 30 days. I cannot skip drawing on two consecutive days. A drawing is made on a A3 sized sheet of plain paper I use pencils and/or  black fineliners to draw with I must only obey the first three rules. I allow myself to diverge from the other rules if I feel like it. I'll post pics of the drawings here, starting with the first five days. Feel free to comment on the pics (or to give me a subject)! (for aesthetic reasons only, I switched the pics of day 1 and 2 :-))

Ribbon Cutting at Pier 9

Yesterday (Thursday September 12th) was the official ribbon cutting at Pier 9.  There were many people in attendance including Autodesk CEO Carl Bass and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. In Instructables' tradition of being nontraditional, the ribbon was made of metal and cut by Carl with a grinder. Tours were given after the official cutting to those who haven't yet experienced the awesomeness of our workshop! Read some more in the article on San Francisco Business Times.

flimsy furniture

My little sister bought the worst/cheapest book case from target. its flimsy the bottom piece was warped, and i had to replace one of the piece of crap plastic pieces that hold the thing together with wood glue, a drill, and a long screw (this piece in fact ended up swaying back and forth less than the rest of the book case) so what I'm interest ed in is ways to reinforce and boost up the quality of the book cases and $30 furniture for as cheap as possible. any one got any thing?

Instructable is still hung up.

Need a hand with an instructable again. It seems mine keep getting "hung up" in the filters. When this happens, they stay in limbo for a good long time, then when they're finally pushed through, they're already buried on page 32 of the "recent" list. I've tried E-Mailing Ed and randofo 2 days ago, but haven't gotten a response. Anyone have any ideas how to deal with this? Or what "filters" are in place so I can avoid having my instructable get throttled, then buried?

sequential LED hulahoop for special needs student

I am a special ed teacher and I want to make a sensory device for one of my students.  What I'm hoping to do is put LEDs around a hula hoop (or something similar), then I need a way to make the lights go on in sequence, so that my student can follow the lights go around in a circle.  I'm rather new to making my own stuff, so I really don't know where to look for how to do this. Ed and I got to meet technoplastique at the Austin Maker Faire back in October, where she was showing off the painting robot she built for the iRobot Create Challenge.I was busy losing my voice at the Instructables booth so didn't get to see her robot in action, but technoplastique stopped by to give us a special robot painting of our very own to take home! Here it is on the wall of my office at Instructables HQ. This is technically the back of the painting, but the colors and swoopy robot patterns look even better from this side of the thin cotton cloth.

Scholarship Contest Idea: iRobot Streetview

My Idea is to make my a create robot go from point A to point B based on GPS position and not a set programmed path. The robot would be placed at point A and told to go point B based on GPS and the robot would figure out how to get there. The main problem with this will be dealing with unknown obstacles that the robot will run into and have to get around. The other difficulty will be in getting the GPS and the create to talk with each other. Once the create gets to point B it will take a picture then rotate 90 degrees and take another picture and so on till it gets a 360 degree view of the spot that it is in. If you have any questions please let me know. Ed

Fresnel lens with collimating lens set-up

Hi. Boatingman here. When I joined Instrucables several years ago, there was a post showing a fresnel lens salvaged from an old TV, then set up with the mirror from the same TV, and then set up with a set of collimating lenses. Now, of course, this didn't make an actual laser, but it did extend the useful range of the focal point and, thanks to the mounting system shown, could actually be aimed. I can't locate this "Instructable", so if anyone out there does have it (or if you have done something similar), could you please let me know. Thank you.    Ed

HELP ASAP! building aluminum trunk with ROUNDED EDGES?

I'm going for the same look as the trunk in the picture but the biggest question I have is how do I get rounded edges. I want the entire piece to be aluminum panels with all the edges and corners rounded, with a wood frame for support. needed advice: -best tools for cutting the aluminum -cheapest source for aluminum sheeting (and best size) -best advice for putting the aluminum panels in (use steel screws, rivets?) -any other advice for getting the best rounded edges and corners (links also appreciated) I would like to make this a gift for someone and need to get started ASAP so any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Sawzall Blade Survival Knife?

Hey Everybody! I've been looking around and I've found many people who have made knives out of hacksaw blades, but I was wondering if it could be done with a Sawzall blade too. If I used a woodcutting Sawzall blade, then the knife could probably go through a limb of a tree faster, and then I could sharpen up the other non-cutting side, and add a handle of some sort, maybe out of paracord or Sugru. Add a Kydex sheath, and its pure DIY-ed. What do you all think? Would the Sawzall blade be sharp enough to cut a piece of wood with your arm (as opposed to the rpm of a Sawzall motor)? Would the Sawzall blade take an edge on the back? Would this be worth my time? Thank you!!!

Small favor to ask - can you guys take a quick survey for my leadership class? (Health based!)

It's a random thing to ask, but since this is done easily online, I thought I'd give it a shot. ;)The survey is over workplace health and very very quick. (10 questions.) My team and I are designing a corporate health program so we need some initial feedback to tell us how people feel about it. 100 people is the limit for the survey and I'm hoping to max that out. Thanks to anyone who helps out! :D(And terribly sorry if I've friend-ed you on myspace and facebook, you'll probably see this again!) http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=zSMWFXvAtWGoxze4TICeAw_3d_3d

My eyes are dim, I cannot see...

You may not know, but I wear contacts. They're monthly disposables - I can leave them in 24/7 for most of a month, as long as I go without for a coupld of day in between. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my spectacles. Since last I wore them, I have been to Cornwall (other side of the country) and on cub camp (in a field). I fear my spectacles are lost somewhere between. Being massively short-sighted, I am consequently having trouble seeing things. I have "Ctrl+ed", but I still have my nose just a hand-span from the screen and key-board. So, if I accidentally post gibberish tonight, and the next night or two, blame it on the mole-eyes. UPDATE: I have a headache, g'night all.

If you have a SONY product you're screwed. Especially SONY USB products for PC's. Drop the bomb on SONY and let them go OOB with a bang!!! Love your Playstation? Just hack the $#!+ out of it! SONY forfeited their DMCA rights. Stop brown-nosing SONY or you'll get computer-AIDS! They haven't learned their lesson. Search for SONY USB ROOTKIT and get as pi$$ed as me! SONY is the reason I haven't touched Windows since their first illegal megahack in 2005. They either owe me a fortune or I own their sorry @$$3$!!! (By default they acknowledge my Pandora's Box/Predictive Music Synth tech, since they did not choose to instead compensate me for actual damages by "SPECIFIC HARM MUSIC" ... which they did not acknowledge as Malware). Man Crashes SUV Through Local Building.

This is huge news, a man crashed into a building right in the middle of town at over 75 mph. It is probably hard to understand it's importance if you are unfamiliar to Gig Harbor, but I've walked past that building and driven down that road thousands of times. The building used to be a restaurant, but the owners sold it and it became a fitness gym. It's right at the heart of Gig Harbor, basically. GIG HARBOR, Wash. - An SUV crashed into the 1-2-3 Fit gym at Pioneer Way and Harborview Drive early Wednesday, killing the driver.Witnesses said the driver was traveling at about 75 mph when the vehicle crashed into the building at about 6:30 a.m.The SUV came to rest on a desk. The 26-year-old driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly.Four or five people on exercise equipment narrowly escaped injury. Gym member Ryan Ryan was doing push-ups at the time of the crash."The odd part about this is there was no attempt to miss the building, no attempt to brake, and the vehicle speed was three-four times the speed limit," said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Dept.Link and Video.I know it's a few days old. I was unable to post a topic earlier because of homework.

Artist 3D prints sculptures with human ashes

Dutch artist Wieke Somers has created a series of sculptures that are made with human ashes. She uses a 3D printer to assemble them, although there's no detail about the construction process in this article. Much more attention is given to the reasoning why in a classic artist statement: dutch design studio wieke somers does not want to discard the many benefits of technological innovation and its inherent mentality and the joy and will to create. instead she wants to make a statement about the current state of affairs in design and our conviction that we need a new view on what is necessary in the 21st century. her project 'consumer or conserve' evaluates this notion of a second-life. she considers, how human ashes can be reused by means of rapid prototyping or 3D printing, so that we may afford someone a 'second life' as a rocking chair, vacuum cleaner, perhaps even a toaster? would we become more attached to these objects if this was the case? would our willingness to pay more for a product increase if it is made from human tissue or ashes? I'd guess the answer is "no." Little bit creepy. Then again, Ed Headrick from Frisbee had his remains mixed in with a bunch of discs after he passed on so who knows? wieki somers: consume or conserve via inhabitat

Hey, All! I'm Relocating! :D

A select few of you who stalk me visit my persona often may have noticed that I changed my location. Well, the reason for that is that my family is on the move again. When I joined Instructables in 4th Quarter 2006, I lived in Texas. Soon after that, we moved to Georgia and now we're off to Florida, from whence I hail. The house we'll be moving into is by far the greatest I've yet to live on. It's situated on a canal that leads out to the Atlantic, it has a pool, two stories, a second master bedroom that I get to share with my brother, and it just looks really cool. Built in the 60's, this house has some serious personality. With every move comes a new school. Mom wants to send me to a Catholic school again (ugh). At least this time it's co-ed, but it still doesn't have a marching band, which is the #1 reason why I prefer a public education.Well, guys, don't freak out if I go MIA over the next few weeks; moving's a contact sport and there's a lot involved if you're not familiar with the process (Eric knows what I mean, don't you? ;-) Dad wants to leave by Friday, and we just starting packing yesterday, so wish us luck. See you all later!

Article Fails To Credit Instructables

To: Ginny Mies, PC World Staff Editor, and Nick Mediati, PC World Assistant EditorCC: Kimberly Brinson, PC World Managing Editor, Ed Albro, PC World Editor, and Eric Wilhelm, Instructables CEOWho is this guy?I can't find his name on your staff list, so I hope you are the right people to talk to about this.I was reading the article in the above link and realized that I had just read most of that stuff (almost in that order) already on a web site called Instructables. While I don't care so much about the actual copyrights (Instructables is largely based on "Attribution non-commercial share-alike" legality), I do believe that at least a formal nod is in order. It might look (to those unfamiliar with Instructables) like he did some fancy research to gather those neat tips together, but to me it is practically undeniable that he was surfing Instructables. (I am not exaggerating, I read at least half of those tips on Instructables within the same hour!)Perhaps the best tip Zack Stern could have given was the only obvious one he left out: Visit Instructables for more of these user-enabling tips!Sincerely,Ricky RatzlaffAvid Instructables readerP.S. If you need links to the relevant projects on Instructables, feel free to ask. They're just a search engine away!

Bringing old LCD screens back to life

When it comes to school projects, I always use my electrical knowledge to engineer some sort of out-of-the-box project. Being a freshman in highschool, most people are sort of amazed by my works. It's all basic stuff, really. I've been doing a lot of work with :EDs inside of these homemade posterboard boxes I've been making. After making one for each class, they're getting really old and they aren't too great looking. So I'd like to really give people a show. About two months ago, I got a 12 inch LCD screen from an old Compaq laptop. For reference, the screen (on the back casing) reads, "LCD MODULE AL LM-JK53-22NTR 10D40092527904". I cannot find many references to a pin-layout or a datasheet, but that's not too much of a problem. If it comes down to it, I will test each pin until I can get some progress. I am interested in using the screen to display data. I don't mind if colors aren't present other then black and white. Black and white works for my purposes. Is it possible to use this with an Arduino? With my initial research, I found that using a VGA card with a VESA Feature Connector will enable me to get the job done. I then run into two problems: 1) I cannot find one of these connectors, and 2) I am unsure if I could even make this work with an Arduino Uno. Any help is appreciated. If the project isn't possible, it's not the end of the world for me. By senior year, I probably will have built a full computer anyway :P ~Joe B.

Mac G3 password hacking?

I got a second-hand mac G3 for Christmas, from the sysadmin at my dad's office. Unfortunately, the sysadmin neglected to remove his accounts (and passwords), so as of yet it's impossible to get past the boot screen. Does anyone have any ideas about how I may crack the password or hack into the account... (changing the root password in single user mode doesn't work...) Oh, and by the way, it's running OS X of some sort, but since we can't log in, it's hard to know what cat it is. Help please!UPDATE:With the help of this site, we made an administrator account. We still don't know the master password, and there are a few untouchable files, but we can basically do whatever we want. The next challenge is to connect it to the internet...If you want to know how we got in, here's what we did:(1) we held down command (the propeller) and S as it booted --> this opened single-user mode, a command-line interface with root priveleges(2) instead of "rm"ing (removing), like the web site suggested, we "mv"ed (moved) /var/db/.AppleSetupDone to /var/db/.AppleSetupDone.old(3) we rebooted, and followed the instructions on the screenWhat did this do? It moved the file that told the computer that the computer was set up, so the computer ran the setup "wizard" like it was the first time the computer had ever been booted. After that, all we had to do was follow the instructions on the screen to set up an administrator (root) account. We also learned that the cat is panther, so we might be updating it to a newer version. Thanks for the help!

Instructables Internship - Day 1

Hello from Instructables HQ!*Last Saturday, I flew down to visit Instructables. I stayed and poked around San Fransisco over the weekend, but today I started my Instructables internship!(Sadly, I left my camera at home, and I don't have nearly as many pictures as I'd like)I arrived at the control tower, and was greeted by [/member/numberrandom Mitch] and [/member/fungusamungus Ed], and [/member/candia Christy] & [/member/ewilhelm Eric] arrived shortly thereafter. I was shown around the place, and then I started to get working. I got to take [/member/noahw Noah]'s desk, since he's out for the week. (Probably chasing [/member/T3h_Muffinator Muffinator] to get Project X's instructable done...)Soon, [/member/rachel/ Rachel] walked in, and helped me get a copy of the database working, so I could start working on site-related things. While the computer was chugging away (as it did for the rest of the day), I walked around and met [/member/randofo Randy], and a few other people. Randy explained to me some of the cool things that he's working on, and I offered to help. One Piece should come back!

Recently I've been wanting to watch One Piece, since I heard that FUNimation had begun dubbing it. Apparently this had happened about a year ago, but since I had stopped watching it on Cartoon Network, I didn't know till I saw an episode with different voices. It was great! A lot of stuff was cut out in the 4kids dub, and the voices were downright awful. Especially sanji's retarded voiceAnyway, the FUNimation dub is really more loyal to the original, and featured a lot of things 4kids left out, like blood, dialogue, or even entire arcs! They cut out one part about a whale and a lighthouse, which at the time didn't seem like much more than filler, but as it turns out, was the background story for a new friggin crew member! So basically, 4kids had completely ruined continuity. The FUNimation dubs on CN was the best thing that ever happened! Yup! All 15 episodes it ran. CN canceled it for no friggin reason, even though the FUNimation dub was quickly gaining much higher ratings than the 4kids one.The main reason I am angry, is that I can't watch the GOOD version o One Piece on tv, because CN is stupid. And I can't watch it on the internet, because FUNimation is too copyright...y... And the DVDs are quite expensive. I can't watch 4kids version now, knowing all the stuff that's missing. All the wounds that should be there. All the facts that have been ignored. All the 9 year old voices on 20 year old men. All the serious themes dumbed down for stupid 8 year with their fingers up their noses! (okay, so my finger is in my nose now, but that's not the point!Basically, this is a rant. Anyway, if anyone likes One Piece, please discuss how idiotic and retarted 4kids is, and how you hope they get ****ed in the *** with an iron stick hard from multiple angles for making a great series just udder ****!

using calcium chloride as humidity reducer closets /laundry rooms

I bought a product called "damp rid "in a hardware store that was used for removing moisture from hamper area, laundry rooms, to prevent mildew. i realized the pelted looked familiar and it was calcium chloride. i want to make my own as i have access to a big bag of calcium chloride. it looks like there is a piece of tyvek/ or other moisture passing membrane on one side of the top upper half, the other 3 sides of the bag look like a mylar  type bag.  The seams all seam to be sealed, except the top has a piece of plastic snapped-sea;ed over it, with a couple very small holes that go into the top half of the bag. the top plastic piece  also has a hanger  loop.. when i bought it the calcium chloride was in the top hang and the bottom half was empty. There looks like a plastic seam weld separating the calcium from the bottom half, and i noticed that are a couple 1/4 inch gaps in the seam. the calcium, chloride draws the moisture out of the air and turns it into water, which falls to the bottom half of the bag.pretty cool device, and seems i t would be able to make, if i can find a source for mylar or whatever this material is. i would also have to make the seams, not sure if glue would work, maybe make a clamp like device , rather than the welds, this way i could just empty the water and replace the calcium chloride, no reason to throw it out. anyone seen these devices, i noticed they have a www with the same name, they may have pictures.  Also looking for a source for mylar and tyvek.  I am not sure if the postal envelopes would work, i would also like to scrounge a sheet of tyvek to use as a ground-cloth or emergency shelter when out on my bicycle and the t storms hit. i haven't seen it except in big rolls, i guess i should keep a lookout for construction sites trash areas.otherwise i am not sure where  i could get a 10 ft piece. i will take the bag apart later to dissect the workings and see if i can measure the thickness of the  mylar

Tracking down the speed problems on a laptop.

I've copied the conversation here so we could remove the information from the original instructable's comments.  I figure this would also be of some interest to other forum viewers who may have similar problems, or may be able to chip in. The long and short of it is, 92033 (Ed) has a refurbished laptop that takes literal hours to run a YouTube video on.  I suspect that it's due to a bottleneck with his internet connection.  Here's the conversation thus far: ---------------------------------------------------------------- 92033 (Ed): Thank you kindly for your prompt reply...appreciate it very much. I came across this site by accident in searching for something else and now I'm 'hooked' on it. :) So far I've read over 400 archived posts (whew)...as well as looking at the videos. The videos are somewhat of a problem because this new laptop only has 512 mg memory...LOOOOOng time to load. For example...to watch a SLOW 5-minute You Tube video takes 5-1/2 HOURS to load...keeps showing a couple words at a time...need to get two new memory chips to upgrade to 2gb. Thanks again...Take care. ---------------------------------------------------------------- eddems: I think you're basic download speed is killing ya, not the laptop. check you're speed at Internetfrog.com, if you see the link near the bottom for the old test, run it, I like it's graph of upload and download speed much better. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 92033: Thanks much. I'll check it out. I ordered a 1gb SDRAM Memory chip which just arrived yesterday. Hope this speeds things up a bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------- harley_rly: i hear u man, my computer is hopped up, but i live out in the sticks and have dialup...i only get 24kbps at most :( ---------------------------------------------------------------- 92033: Maybe there's hope for 'us' yet. :-) I phoned Tiger Direct to see cost of an upgrading memory chip to go from 512mg to 1-1/2gb. The guy I talked to suggested I get "PC TUNEUP 2.0" which bypasses the Windows Operating System (I'm using Windows XP Pro) and speeds up the system. I gave it a try and ordered the CD (cost $39.98 - $44.77 postpaid). It hasn't arrived yet but will let you know if it helps as he claims it will. He said that if I just ordered a 1gb memory chip my system wouldn't notice much improvement as it is, but this CD should do the trick. THEN...when I DO order the Memory chip(s) to get total of 2gb my system should zip through like a rocket with the CD just ordered. I'll let you know when I get the CD and about the results. Just hope I haven't thrown forty-five bucks to the wind. Thanks for the contact...appreciate hearing from you. TAKE CARE. ~ ED ---------------------------------------------------------------- Javin007: PC Tune-Up "bypasses the Windows Operating System?" This guy fed you a load of crap. (I work on computers for a living.) PC Tune-Up does nothing more than clean up registries, defragment harddrives (if your OS even needs it, some don't) and keeps drivers up to date (which you could do manually.) That guy's an idiot, or just a liar. Could be both. Unless you were buying PC Tuneup 2.0 from Tiger Direct, in which case we can add "sleazy salesman" to that. What are the specs of the laptop? Go to Start/Run and type in DXDIAG. This will give you a quick snapshot of the specs. Specifically, I'm curious as to the processor speed/type. For a 5 1/2 hour "load" you're more likely looking at network slowdown issues (although 512 megs for XP is WAYYYY too little. I HATE when they put PCs together like that). The RAM upgrade will show significant speed increases, but no improvement with YouTube videos or other downloads. I'm glad to see you are returning the CD. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 92033: Thanks much for your input...appreciate it very much. I checked the DXDIAG as you recommended. Here's the info on it: IBM ThinPad Laptop PC. Model # 23738TU. Intel Premium M 1.70GHZ. 512mb SDRAM Memory chip.Page File- 351mb used,513 mb available. Direct Version-Directx 9.00 (4.09.0000.0904). 512 mb SDRAM-Actual 212 Ram. AVAST Anti-Virus. MS Windows XP-PRO.. Dialup Speed-40kbps. PC2700 SDRAM 512mb Memory Chip installed. I ordered 1bb memory chip which arrived yesterday. Now I have to figure out HOW to remove the bottom of this laptop to install it...lotta small screws on it. :-) Oh, total memory shows 32mb. I don't know if this means much to you. I note your comment that the added RAM memory WONT (?) speed up loading YouTube videos? Is that correct? If so, why not? Thanks again. Take care. ~ ED ---------------------------------------------------------------- Javin007: :) At the risk of boring too many people, here's how memory in a PC works: You have two kinds of memory: RAM, and Hard Drive (technically there's three, as there's also onboard video RAM on video cards, but this is primarily used for 3D video game textures, so can be mostly ignored.) Your harddrive's read/write speed is determined by the type of harddrive it is (most are SATA now) and the rotation speed (most are 7200 RPM, though the specs for your system say yours is only 5400 RPM, but there are 10, 15, and even 20K rpm models out there that are exponentially more expensive.) No matter what, harddrive memory will always be degrees slower than RAM. RAM on the other hand is a small chunk of memory that is "temporary" memory, but very fast. Its speed is determined by the type of RAM (DDR2 being the current common one for notebooks, though DDR3 is available with some motherboards (you can ignore this, though, as you can only handle 2 gigs max of DDR with your system). The motherboard will determine the limits for the RAM that can be installed.) When running *ANYTHING* on your computer, and I mean ANYTHING, it must first be loaded into RAM to be accessed by the CPU. The computer doesn't directly access the harddrive. So this means when your operating system is loaded (Windows XP) the entirety of all running processes for the OS have to be loaded into RAM. Now, Microsoft claims that Windows XP only requires a minimum of 64 megs of RAM, but recommends 128 megs. I challenge you to find me a Windows XP system that only uses 128 megs out of the box. It's not atypical for an XP system to chew through all 512 megs of your RAM, leaving no RAM available for other applications. (Interestingly, the default setup for your laptop is only 256 megs of RAM, yet yours is reporting 512.) What happens when there's no RAM left? The system has to then start trading things into what is called "Virtual Memory." VM is nothing more than a file on the harddrive that will temporarily hold information that SHOULD be in RAM, so the RAM can load more info. For instance, say you have a process that's using RAM, but you want to watch your YouTube video. As the video is ready to play, the system will take the other process's data that's in RAM, write it to the harddrive, load your video into RAM in its place, play a portion of it, write the video to the harddrive, load the data for the process to RAM, let it run for a split second (so it doesn't lock up), write it back to the harddrive, load your video into RAM and play a short clip, etc. etc. etc. The result of low RAM on your system is that applications will open slowly (seconds or minutes, instead of instantly or a few seconds) and they will seem slow to respond, will stutter, etc. With enough RAM, your system can freely open as much as it needs into RAM, and ignore the virtual memory and all the slowdowns that it causes. Now, all of this being said, NO lack of RAM will cause a streaming video to take 5 1/2 hours to play. This is 100% going to be related to your downspeed. (Go to www.speedtest.net and post your results.) RAM slowdowns tend to be most noticeable when shutting down, or starting up your computer, apps will open a little more slowly, they will be slower to respond to button clicks, and video will be very choppy. Anything that is causing a YouTube video to take HOURS will be due to the system simply waiting to get the video in the first place. RAM wouldn't slow down the receiving of the video, but it would cause the video to play weird once it's downloaded. So, all this being said, here's the summary: Your system has a 1.7 Ghz processor, and your RAM is most likely 333 Mhz DDR. If you bump your memory up to a gig, you should see a pretty significant improvement in that your computer will, overall, just "feel" faster. It'll be more responsive, and working with large documents will be many, many times faster. This won't, however, affect your YouTube experience (unless you were getting jittery video often, not the same as "buffering" video.) If you see "buffering" for a long time, your internet connection is your bottleneck. A test on www.SpeedTest.net will likely confirm this. However, if you get decent numbers on SpeedTest, then we could have something more sinister going on, though I suspect you'll find your numbers well below the 1 mbps rate. This brings us to actually changing the RAM. I've been out of the PC hardware realm (professional programmer now) for a few years, and was unable to find a manual for your particular model. However, if memory serves, this image should be a fairly accurate representation of the underside of your system: http://www.javin-inc.com/temp/thinkpad.JPG Don't quote me, but I BELIEVE the red circle will indicate the only screw you will need to remove to access the RAM. There should also be a small clip holding the RAM in place that you'll want to pinch to get the RAM out, and make sure that the new RAM snaps into place. (Sometimes you'll have additional empty RAM beds, and you can just put your RAM in there and end up with 1.5 gigs, but I suspect you'll have two 256 gig chips in there.) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 92033: Phew. Thanks again for your most indepth educational lesson. I appreciate all your help more than you realize. I attempted to answer this last night, typing in more than twice the amount of text as your to me, then suddenly realized there was a glitch and I was on another page...lost it all into the ionisphere. :-( Rather than try to retype all I wrote, I shut 'r down and went to sleep. Now I'm trying to recall all I wrote last night but failed to get mailed. I'm not a traditional typist, rather a one-finger bloke so you can understand the frustration there. I do, however, type at a reasonably good speed. With that said, let's continue. I went to search for Configuration of this IBM Laptop ThinkPad 23738TU and am copy and pasting it here. IBM 23738TU Summary ********************************************************************************* NOTE...I DON'T BELIEVE THIS...I JUST TYPED FORTY MINUTES REPLY HERE and it instantly scrolled up like speed of lightning and disappeared like last night. I'll ATTEMP to try again later. So please don't reply yet as you need to read my discoveries in changing the RAM chip. Meanwhile, thanks again...take care. ~ ED ******************************************************************************* TRY #3...I'm Back :-) Your diagram showing where the RAM chip is located was right on. Thanks. Here's my DISCOVERY :-( The RAM chip installed was NOT a 512mg...but only a 256mg chip. The ads ans specs say it's a 512mg...NOT SO. I was lied to by either the manufacturer or refurbishing company who removed the original 512 chip and reinstalled a 256 chip. I was lied to by the Tiger Direct guy on the phone. There are NOT two chip slots...only one. So I now have a useless removed 256mb RAM chip. Replaced with the 1gb RAM chip I just installed. So instead of having 1-1/2 gb RAM, I only have 1gb. Here's the crux. To. go to 2gb RAM I'd need to buy a full 2gb RAM CHIP and discard the 1gb for which I just paid $39.99 ($45.00 with s/h). This means another output of almost a hundred dollars plus the $45.00 just wasted because they wont accept return once the sealed chip plastic was opened...even though I had no idea there was only ONE SLOT in this PC instead of TWO like the Tiger Guy said. Now...crux #2...this new 1gb RAM does nothing more to increase speed. I just watched a 2.01 MINUTE YouTube video which took a HALF HOUR to load, so I threw the money away for nothing, eh? There is no noticeable change except the 'speed' shows it now as 41.2 kbps instead of 40 kbps. Okay...now HOW do I get to speed this thing up to normal viewing in real time? I also saw an ad for 4bg RAM Gateway laptop with 120gb hard drive for $404.99 which is all suped-up with everything. I had to upgrade a LOT since I got this only four months ago...taking over a hundred hours to load it, like Internet Explorer 5 to 6 and then to 8 and now to 9. I'm using AVAST Anti-Virus, after trying for 23 hours to get ADVAR, then find out it didn't load because of problem on the servor's end. Added Firefox and upgraded twice. Loaded MS Protection but it created more problems so I deleted it...now with AVAST which I like. Soooo...I've literally spent over 200 hours to get this thng where it's at now, plus the wasted money for the upgraded RAM chip.and I still don't have increased speed. HOW do I get it? IF the processor has to be changed does this mean I have to gut the thing and install a new motherboard? If so, what kind of money cost are we talking here? I bought this four months ago as a refurbished unit only because I was able to get it on payments of only $25.00 a month. If I had to wait to get $400.00 cash I'd never have it. :-) Okay...that's it for the moment. Thanks much again for your help offering and detailed instructions...appreciate it more than you realize. Best Wishes And God's Blessings To You And Yours In Everything Always. Most Respectfully... ~ ED  ---------------------------------------------------------------- Javin007: Well, let's start with the RAM. If you're running windows XP, you can assume all the extra processes (virus scanners, and whatnot) will be eating up about 512 megs of the RAM. First thing to do is check DXDIAG again (start/run) and verify that it's now reporting the correct amount of RAM. (Don't be surprised if it's like 9 hundred something megs or slightly more. It won't report 1024 or 1 gig.) This being said, that will leave you with the other 512 for your applications. This box won't be running the latest and greatest 3D games, but I suspect it was never intended to. If the heaviest hitter you'll have running is along the lines of photoshop, the 1 gig of RAM you have now should be plenty sufficient. I wouldn't worry about getting 2 gigs. Not for this rig, anyway. Also, Avast is a great (and free) virus protection, every bit as good as Symantec's Norton, so good choice there. If your youtube videos are choking out, we need to start by verifying that it's an actual speed throttling problem. Go to www.SpeedTest.net and run the speed test. Come back with the results.
