USB Power(ed)

I'm obsessed with USB powered gadgets, but i'm not sure what the USB current limitations are, I know that the power output is about 5v,  but i dont know if i can attach gadgets that uses less or more voltaje, so I was wondering if anyone here can give a piece of advice about what can or cant I do with usb power.

Edmund Scientific: Question

Has Edmund Scientifics (originally Edmund Science) bee taken over by a company outside the USA? The only reason I ask is that, I was reading down through the Geek Tech stuff, and when I went to descriptions, I found stuff like this: The Privacy Safe can detect the strength of radio frequency generated by different types of LED signal indicator such as wireless video camera. When a suspicious object is approached or located, the "Red" light will be on and the alarm will beep continuously. The superb bright torch could illuminate allows you to find things or read in the dark. That nearly drove me to distraction reading grammar like this from a supposedly scientific catalog. I remember when I was much younger, you couldn't even find a misspelled word in their catalogs, now I can hardly read them without wincing . Anyone know what happened?

Dr. Who - Voyage of the Da**ed - dedication

I know this is old news, but it is NEW to me.   I just finished viewing The Voyage of the Damned, episode of Dr. Who and at the end, there was a dedication to Verity Lambert, OBE  (27 November 1935 – 22 November 2007), She is best known as the founding producer of the science fiction series Dr. Who.

Film holders are not recognized - Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED Answered

Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED I've been using for 6 years nearly every day now refuses to recognize the film holder._________It says, "No film holder detected. Try to clean the square holes at the front side of the film holder and if this doesn't work, try another holder." _____________ I tried all: cleaned all holders, opened the scanner and cleaned it from dust; restarted the computer; turned the scanner off/on/off/on with 5 min intervals. Nothing helped. ______ Then I tried another program - Viewscan. It also said, "Insert the film holder" while it was already inserted.______   Who knows what might it mean? That the scanner grew too old?

Instructables: Download All My Favorates?

Q1: Is their a way to download all the Instructables that I have favorite-ed? Q2: I was also wondering if their is a way to view my all my favorite-ed things in one web page. eg (like in a list form.) Along while ago it used to be done kind of like this.   https://www.instructables.com/you/?show=GOOD&sort;=RECENT&limit;=20&offset;=40 of course you could change the limit to = your total number of favorite-ed things. but now if you are signed in and on your main page you can only click on the "More Activities" I cant find a way to display all of the favorite-ed things all at once for clicking on. So.. how can i do this now?

A simple controller for a dc treadmill motor?

I have a United Technologies dc motor, 2.5 hp @ 120VDC, but no controller.  It has a red & black wire, plus 2 blue wires.  The black goes through a choke coil.  Anybody have a breadboard type of design for a speed controller with hookup instructions?  I can solder, follow a schematic, and  wire a house, but  am not up on electronics.  Last radio I built was in the mid 50's, so I probably need more than usual specifics.  Thanks for any help you can offer.  Ed B

IR or RF light switch.?

I need to replace an old (1940s) rotary switch.  It turns on 21, 20 watt/110v light bulbs on a display sign.  Each one in sequence.  Once on, each light stays on until switch is rotated backwards or all are turned off.  Currently, the switch is on a 10' cable with all wires forming the cable.  It is bulky and contacts are bad.  So, I'm hoping one of you wizards can give me instructions on how to replace it with a wireless remote and relays or whatever.  I bow to the experts. If you prefer, you can contact me at   Moto-Ed@att.net Thanks, Ray

Ratings are temporarily Funky

We have just released a new version of the site, with some changes to the way we rate instructables. Ed (our own fungus amungus) will be giving you all a bit more detail on that soon, but at the moment just know that there is Big Calculation going on behind the scenes, and ratings are going to be behaving a little weird for a couple hours. You may not notice anything but if you do, don't worry, it's Normal. Trust me. I'm a scientist.

Apple Pie; how to keep the sliced apples from shriveling up?

Cooking in sugar tends to draw the moisture out of the apple and you end up with slim dried out slivers!!  I have had the same trouble if I cook carrots or sweet potatoes in the sugar! To prevent the carrots and sweet potatoes, I cook them separately and at the last minute I add the cooked sugar syrup!  But am at a loss as how to make the apples in a pie that does not shrivel up!

30-day project: A drawing every day

Inspired by Ed's post on "30-day projects", I decided to jump in: I'll make a drawing every day. I enjoy drawing a lot, but I rarely take the time or opportunity to do it. So, thanks to Ed, here I go. I started on Aug. 12, so the 30th drawing will be posted shortly after Sept. 11. To make it a little easier for myself, I made up some "rules": In thirty days, 30 drawings must be made Skipping one day is allowed, but the drawing that wasn't made must be made on another day within the 30 days. I cannot skip drawing on two consecutive days. A drawing is made on a A3 sized sheet of plain paper I use pencils and/or  black fineliners to draw with I must only obey the first three rules. I allow myself to diverge from the other rules if I feel like it. I'll post pics of the drawings here, starting with the first five days. Feel free to comment on the pics (or to give me a subject)! (for aesthetic reasons only, I switched the pics of day 1 and 2 :-))

Instructable is still hung up.

Need a hand with an instructable again. It seems mine keep getting "hung up" in the filters. When this happens, they stay in limbo for a good long time, then when they're finally pushed through, they're already buried on page 32 of the "recent" list. I've tried E-Mailing Ed and randofo 2 days ago, but haven't gotten a response. Anyone have any ideas how to deal with this? Or what "filters" are in place so I can avoid having my instructable get throttled, then buried?

Ribbon Cutting at Pier 9

Yesterday (Thursday September 12th) was the official ribbon cutting at Pier 9.  There were many people in attendance including Autodesk CEO Carl Bass and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. In Instructables' tradition of being nontraditional, the ribbon was made of metal and cut by Carl with a grinder. Tours were given after the official cutting to those who haven't yet experienced the awesomeness of our workshop! Read some more in the article on San Francisco Business Times.

flimsy furniture

My little sister bought the worst/cheapest book case from target. its flimsy the bottom piece was warped, and i had to replace one of the piece of crap plastic pieces that hold the thing together with wood glue, a drill, and a long screw (this piece in fact ended up swaying back and forth less than the rest of the book case) so what I'm interest ed in is ways to reinforce and boost up the quality of the book cases and $30 furniture for as cheap as possible. any one got any thing?

How to tighten locknuts without the bolt being fastened? Answered

So, I'm trying to fasten my trucks to my diy-ed skates now, but one of the three bolts of the first truck is looser in it's hole than the other three. When I try to screw the locknut on, the bolt just turns along, and there's my sole on the other end. First mounting the trucks to the baseplate and then mounting the baseplate to the boot is not an option, as there's bolts fastening the plate under the trucks.

Is there an easy and safe way to trim/grind the edge of a glass plate? Answered

I'm trying to fit a pre-cut mirror glass (rescued from a $5 Wal-Mart mirror) into the back of a shadow box.  The mirror itself is not quite square, so there is one corner and part of the adjacent edge which won't quite fit into box (about 0.5 mm overlap).  If this was wood or plastic, I'd grab some sandpaper and bring the edge down to fit.  Is there an equivalently easy, but safe, method for doing the same with glass (3 mm thick)?

Ed and I got to meet technoplastique at the Austin Maker Faire back in October, where she was showing off the painting robot she built for the iRobot Create Challenge.I was busy losing my voice at the Instructables booth so didn't get to see her robot in action, but technoplastique stopped by to give us a special robot painting of our very own to take home! Here it is on the wall of my office at Instructables HQ. This is technically the back of the painting, but the colors and swoopy robot patterns look even better from this side of the thin cotton cloth.
