The end is Here ?

This is an urgent call. I think the world would really come to an end because of the increase in natural disasters around the world. I think the world would certainly come to an end with a huge tsunami. Since the effects of global warming is here, within 5-10 years i am afraid to say that the world would certainly end. So do you think this is possible ? Thats why me and a couple of my friends are thinking of making a safehouse or ship where we could be safe in case of a tidal wave or other natural disasters. The problem is that we do not have any clue of what we are doing. i am thinking of making a anchored kinda ship which could acompany 5 people each. This ships would contain oxygen tanks with supply of about 2 years, food and safe drinking water wit seawater purifer, necesary tools and items, survival supplies and other necesary things. This ship should contain an onboard motor engine which could enable the ship to move in water. This ship should atleast protect the passengers from a big tsunami. It would contain a 5 passenger seating with folding beds and solar panels which could also power the engine and equipments inside. i really wanna build this because it's a fun project and could protect peoples lives who are poor and could not afford to go on a boat or are in low lying areas. So what do you think?

What is this item?

A friend gave this to me, wanted me to find out what it is. I have no idea, she was a bit creeped out by it. It's small, as you can see, sitting on counter in front of coffee pot. When it sits right side up, it looks like a goats head, and upside down it looks like an old man with beard. Someone suggested to me that it could be an end to a samurai sword, however I think that is incorrect. What do you guys think?

The end of the energy crisis?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Catalyzer This is the wikipedia page to a cold fusion (low temperature fusion) device that uses powdered nickel as fuel to produce free energy... It's supposed to be totally eco-friendly and it's planned to be sold out as commercial cold fusion device. Just thought to share this with others on Instructables. I like it and am looking forward to seeing this in my hands when it's made commercial. How about you?

Movember Ends Soon...

And so it begins... To raise awareness of mens' health, particularly prostate cancer, thousands of men around the world are growing moustaches through the month of Movember. If you would like to donate to this important cause, then, please, donate here.  Don't forget, if you're a UK taxpayer, you can gift-aid your donation and increase its value by 30% with no extra cost to you. (And thanks to Canucksgirl for the new avatar) EDIT: (11th November) I was tidying the 'tache for Rememberance Parade, so I thought it was time to share progress here. Don't forget, you can still donate all through November. Further Edit: Movember ends on Friday, and you can still donate [click here]. I am under strict instructions that the end of Movember will be celebrated with a fresh razor, so I plan to document the removal "live" on Twitter, posting pictures during the shave.

When the worlds ends...

I just learned that China's six biggest ports now ship 25 times more goods than the entire planet shipped just a generation ago. A few logical steps later, I found myself wondering; How long could [insert country of choice] last if all international transport (including materials transported via pipes) were suddenly shut off? How far back down the scale of civilisation would your nation slide before it stabilised? Which countries would fare worst? Best? Discuss.

Ending SPAM on instructables

It is becoming unbearable and making instructables NSFW.  Every day there are dozens of scantly dressed asian women shown with some cryptic text below.  These are clearly not instructables, and it becomes embarrassing to open the site when others are around. Suggestions:  1) Ban users that post two or more SPAM. 2) Do not allow postings from users that are less than 1 week old (e.g., today there are 6 new SPAMS from a user that joined today). I love instructables, but it has become too annoying to use anymore.  Some measures must be taken.

58 mins ago The Large Hadron Collider Was Activated To Much Whoopee

LHC activate! So far I'm still alive and it appears that that our universe will not be ending. This comes much to the dismay of false prophets everywhere. Though as gmjhowe points out [http://Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5047732/large-hadron-collider-why-you-really-wont-die-today] indicates that our time of death may have been miscalculated. Although the beam is active, the collision wont happen till October. We've been bringing you the lowdown on the LHC for a while now. You know there has been some concern that this would be the [https://www.instructables.com/community/Its-the-End-of-the-World-As-We-Know-It-.../ end of the world] due to the creation of black holes. And now the The Large Hadron Collider is activated and ready for collisions. And those crafty CERN scientists have captured our attention like a presidential scandal.-bg

Instructacon: The Robot Says Goodbye

Saturday the 26th was the official end of Instructacon, Instructables first conference hosted by the Robot itself! This year, we had a whopping two attendees: The elusive Jessyratfink, and the unpronounceable Zachninme. There was free lunch, build sessions, BBQ's, novel sports, bike rides, random interviews, and plain (muffin) wholesome fun! Unfortunately, as all good things must come to an end, the Robot eventually had to part with its guests, and forcefully took them to the nearest human shipping facility, as soon as it had the spare time. Jessyratfink was politely escorted back Sunday morning, and Zachninme was shipped off Tuesday morning. We do miss our attendees dearly, and hope to see more of you at the next Instructacon!Documentation below

Help me save my Nuvi.  I was replacing a battery that would not hold a charge when the screen module slipped taking with it the flexible circuit connection to the main circuit board.  My attempt to revive the Nuvi is now on life support as I'm not sure if the connection is mechanical or uses some kind of adhesive... Too bad this ends so soon.

If I had another month, I was planning on making a nice instructable on how to make a good motorized bike, doing 150mpg, with 7 speeds, and a max speed of 80mph.. Although I don't think anybody will get up to that fast. You'll still be able to petal, and it's street legal (considered pedal assist) No welds required. The modification process can be dumbed down to a sheet of metal, hacksaw, and a drill. However, I'd recommend a sheer for cutting, but that's just me. The total cost of the project would be a bike, plus $200 in parts, plus $200 for the engine. Maybe I'll submit it to the green one instead, 150mpg is pretty good. That is if I get all the parts and have the time to put it together, plus do a write up.

It's the End of the World As We Know It ...

... and I Feel Fine.So the LCH "red button" day is coming up. It is supposed to happen mid-June with collisions starting a couple of months later (I haven't found any actual dates yet though). I know that the chances of it producing a mini black hole that gobbles up the Earth (or one of many other strange, never before seen, apocalyptic theoretical physics scenarios) are small, but still ...Who thinks it would be fun to throw a party the night before they fire it up? So if the next day we all cease to exist, we could at least have the satisfaction of going out with a (big) bang. The parties could be physics themed too. We could have snacks and drinks that are composed of atoms. We could tell physics jokes ("Supercollider, I barely even know her"). We could read passages from "Flatland". And to finish the night off (this almost goes without saying for apocalypse motivated parties) we would have a massive bokononism style orgy. What do you say Instructables members, want to rub some feet?Edit: CERN is actually being sued to prevent the firing up of the LHC. Modding High-end pet door

I currently own and am using a High Tech Pet electronic pet door (http://www.hitecpet.com/px-1detail.html) and would like to modify it to: 1) Read/activate via a small RFID tag instead of the very large (for a cat) sonic transmitter. The cat is feral (we lock him at night in the garage), so he sometimes gets in fights and loses his entire collar. The transmitters are $40 each! He's lost three so far. 2) Switch mode to "in only" at a preset time very night and "in and out" mode every morning. I like the features of this door, and it's already installed. It's extremely weatherproof and resilient. Most Lexan/acrylic cat flaps I've seen or owned aren't even in the same league as this one, which is why I would prefer to keep this door as opposed to modding a different brand of door. I know how to solder and have a very basic understanding of electronics. I could probably muddle through a DIY, but I'm not even sure it can be done. Is it as simple as locating the receiver on the board and replacing it with an RFID reader? Or is that wishful thinking? Thanks in advance for any insight, advice, help. :)

End of World One Step Closer. Or Not.

A vast physics experiment - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - reaches a key milestone this weekend ahead of an official start-up on 10 September.Engineers had previously brought a beam of protons - tiny, sub-atomic particles - to the "doorstep" of the LHC.On 9 August, protons will be piped through LHC magnets for the first time. The most powerful physics experiment ever built, the LHC will re-create the conditions present in the Universe just after the Big Bang. This last sentence is the one that's caused a little panic amongst certain groups of the population - they are convinced that the experiment will create miniature black holes which will fall through the LHC towards the centre of the Earth, where they will orbit around, gradually consuing the planet from beneath our feet. When the collider is commissioned, the beams will cross paths at allotted points along the tunnel, smashing into one another with cataclysmic force. My God, have these people never seen Ghostbusters??Scientists hope to see new particles in the debris of these collisions, revealing fundamental new insights into the nature of the cosmos and how it came into being. Now that is seriously cool (well, hot, actually) - to be able to recreate what the whole of reality looked like mere femtoseconds after it started...BBC storyCritics have previously raised concerns that the production of weird hypothetical particles called strangelets in the LHC could trigger the mass conversion of nuclei in ordinary atoms into more strange matter - transforming the Earth into a hot, dead lump.Earlier BBC storyAmusingly paranoid storyAnalog Magazine article

Putting an end to flickering LED's on mains

Greetings everyone! It's the time of year when colorful twinkling lights adorning nearly every structure you can see. LED's have become more popular as of late, and from an energy standpoint that's good. I know most people can't see a 60Hz flicker but I can, and it's quite unpleasant to sit across from a tree full of LED's all doing the same on-off-on-off nonsense.  I am fortunate to only get headaches though, other epileptics I've known have actually had AC LED's trigger seizures. So what can be done about this? We bought LED strings before thinking about flicker and have since replaced them with incandescent ones, but I've still got all the LED strings in the closet. I'd really like to be able to use them.  Perhaps I could fashion a device that acted as a middleman between the outlet and the plug on the lights that would smooth the incoming current? I have two ideas for this:  1.  Filter incoming current with an RC circuit 2.  Rectify the mains voltage I'm curious if anyone else has attempted, solved, or even just noticed this frequency problem? I don't mind re-inventing the wheel, but I'd rather not build it square. Happy holidays! **yes, I just said happy holidays. Deal with it. :)

The 5 Scientific Experiments Most Likely to End the World (Humor)

Let's face it, we really trust science. Right?Well, here's five experiments that may prove us wrong.Slighty NSFW, as it cointains a few bad words, but this is hilarious!
