Help wanted in the UK: Dealing with SNOW

Hello there all, As you might be aware, us here in the UK are having a fair amount of snow, which as you might also be aware, causes our country to slowly collapse... Since those of you who live in Canada and northern states of the USA are quite a bit more used to the snow, I wondered if the collective genius of Instructables could give us some tips on dealing with snow... Things which'd be interesting to know about: -Footwear -Driving -Clothing -Shovelling I think you get the picture. Cheers!

God save the Queen!

It has been brought to my attention, after many years of being a proud American, that we are all believing a lie. We are all subjects of the British monarchy. Our good people, the conspiracy theorists, whom never have lied to us before are informing us to that fact. Therefore to show my new allegiance to the Crown, I will sing "Rule Britannia" every morning and I will renounce baseball as my favorite sport and I am gladly replacing cricket as my new spectator sport (I still have no idea how the game is played but I will learn sooner or later). God save the Queen! Watch the video!

UK Mini Maker Faire - The Derby Silk Mill - New Poster to Share!

Seems that the folks at Nottingham Hackspace (Nottinghack) and some new folks called Derby Makers are putting on a Mini Maker Faire bang in the middle of the UK, on Sunday the 3rd of June. We've just put up some cash to help things along and will be attending. Who's with us? The Mini Maker will be held at the Silk Mill, which is reputed to be oldest factory in the UK, and up until recently was an industrial museum. It's still part of the museums trust and has some fantastic exhibits inside (Rolls Royce Merlin engine is my favourite!) which will be nestled alongside all manner of makers. So are you coming? If not why not? http://makerfairederby.wordpress.com/

alternative ways to cool house in new england humid summers

I live in new england where we get some pretty hot and humid days in the summer. I hate ac units so I am trying to find other ways to cool my 180 years old house. It's well insulated and has a full basement that is 5 feet under ground level so it's usually pretty cool. A the temperature rises, the first floor is usually warmer and the second floor gets plain hot Has any one tinkered with fans and ducts to move that cool air up from the basement to the upper floors. Thanks

Secret Resource: Waterproofing!

Everywhere I look, people are throwing out umbrellas. I've started scavenging the skins and (in rainy England) sewing them onto *everything*. It's great. There are tons of umbrellas that break, etc. and are thrown out every day. You can sew them together to make a big tarp, make a cover for your bag/laptop, etc. Wonderful!

A New (Piccadilly) Circus in town

Most of us know that the Piccadilly circus in England is not a "circus" as many think of it.  Pennsylvania USA however is hosting a circus of that name with a circus using the name Piccadilly Circus.       For anyone interested in the Original Piccadilly Circus, they can go here (or  Google it). The pictures below are of the Circus (in the USA) and the original place named Piccadilly Circus.

I left because I was annoying people too much, and I got a PM from a mod telling me he 'expects better behaviour in future'. I kept meaning to get back to it, but I just got caught up in a lot of stuff which was happening. Its christmas day today, weird, because I'm currently in England. When I did get time to go on, I decided to play BF2:BC, TF2, Minecraft, HaloCE or Mercs2. Well thats pretty much it. I'm back.

Solar Air Con for animal shelter

I am thinking of moving to a warmer country ( SW France ) than England but I have a small pack of huskies that I would like to keep cool in the warmest weather. I was wondering if it is possible to use the solar energy available in abundance to provide an air cooling system for them. I realise that aircon normally requires a lot of electricity but I am only looking to keep a small space ( block built shelter of about maybe 7-800 cubic feet ) cool and hoped that this might be possible. Any ideas ?

Another observation of incipient speciation in the wild

A report in Science News this week reports on observations of German blackcaps, which are apparently splitting into two separate, non-reproducing populations, and which are developing distinct appearances along the to becoming separate species.  Since the 1960s, the two populations have developed different wintering migration habits: the original blackcaps migrated from Germany to Spain and back again, while the new population overwinters in England(!), relying on the vast number of backyard feeders (yes, this is all your fault, Kiteman!).  Yet another beautiful example of careful observation in the wild of natural selection and its consequences.

Aerosol Flamethrower

I've searched almost all words associated with "Aerosol flamethrower" on instructables, yet I see nothing of the sort. Where I come from in England, they're very common, has anyone else ever made one and would the subject be to easy to make a whole instructable out of it. (even if other ways of using them were included?)-=EDIT=-I've established it IS a bad idea, but also just to clarify:~Spray~ can flamethrowers will NOT randomly blow up unless (to my knowledge)You hold it the flame so it burn the nozzle. You pierce the valve. You douse it in and light or chuck it in a fire.

Happy Darwin Day, everyone!

On February 12, 1809, in the town of Shrewsbury, England, Charles Robert Darwin was born. If you somehow don't already know, he's the guy that rode a beagle and played with birds and was a monkey's uncle and wrote some book. This Friday celebrates his 201st birthday. In other words, PARTAY! I will be wearing my science shirt in honor of the holiday, due to my unfortunate lack of suitable Darwinian attire...I shall also be eating ramen noodles in honor of the Pastafarian holiday of Friday, but that's mostly because I'll be working a play and that's all I have time to eat. How do YOU plan to celebrate this auspicious occasion?
