Am I responsible by arranging an event? Answered

Hello, I've put this question on a law site as well but I am always interested in Instructables' answers. If I arrange an event as informally as I can such as putting a posting on a site saying, " Is anyone interested in a game of croquet at 3pm at the local park? ; Just turn up if you want to ; at your own risk." Can I as an ' organiser ' be held responsible for any injuries? If so, is there a way that everyone can be responsible for themselves? Thank you.

Independent Maker/DIY/STEM Festivals

We started a new group called the Independent Makers Network, with associated social media, and invite folks to let us know about your maker events so we can add them to the calendar, and event directory  .  This is for full scale community festivals, not build nights and the like, although those are always great to know about, too.  Hope you'll share word here or at the website.  Thanks!

Need help identifying material for a wedding cake topper base

Hi guys, I had a geode cake topper made for my wedding and it was made by soldering geode slices to a base. But the soldering is too weak and it's falling apart. :(I found an image online of a geode cake topper that has some other kind of base that seems much more stable. However, I don't know what it is made of but it looks like some kind of clear epoxy maybe but that is thick enough to pool without spreading? If anyone can help me identify it I will be so grateful!

Happenings 1/10/08

There are some cool events happening in the Bay Area right now. Today we are highlighting hot dogs and re-purposed trash, but there is always plenty to go out do.Frankenart Drop-in Arterrarium Tonight there is a drop-in arterrarium at Frankenart Mart. What's an arterrarium? Well, as best as we can tell, it's an event where you make art with real live people and then add it to the show in the Frankenart gallery right before your very eyes! And what ties this whole operation together you may ask? Hot dogs of course.Thursday, January 10th, 2008 6 - 9pm515 Balboa Street, San Francisco, CA415.221.2394Finders Keepers Gallery Opening Reception Creativity Explored artists turn trash into treasure in a new exhibition of sculptural works made from cast-off wood, metal, wire, and other found objects.Thursday, January 10, 2008, 7 - 9 pm3245 16th Street, San Francisco CAWe need your help!If there is an event that you think the Instructables community would be interested in your area let us know about it so we can put it on our Community Blog! How are forums organized?

I think there is a lot of good information within the Forum section of the site, but I have not been able to figure out if there is any particular organization to it.  I do fine when I click on Forum, then there is a list of topics, or divisions, alphabetically arranged.  But click on one of those topics, and it seems there is no order or organization at all.  There are buttons for:post, posts and topics, topics, featured, etc, but clicking on them doesn't seem to alter much, if anything?  It would be nice if things were arranged either: alphabetically, numerically, by author, by date, by topic, etc.  Or am I missing something (which is very possible, I admit...) Any help and or enlightenment would be appreciated, thank you.

Fire Ballet at the Crucible: Stravinsky's Firebird

I've been watching the set for the Crucible's second fire ballet, Firebird: L'oiseau de feu, come together over the past few weeks, and the metalwork and fire sculpture of the set alone is going to be incredible. Add ballet dancers, aerialists, acrobats, break dancers, motorcycle stunts, a classic car, and fantastic fire performance...and, well, amazement will ensue. If you're in the SF Bay area, come out for the show! From the Crucible website and press release:The Crucible PresentsOur second Benefit Fire BalletStravinsky's FIREBIRD: "L'oiseau de feu"Once again The Crucible sets the dance scene ablaze with a fusion of classical ballet, fire performance, aerialists, acrobats and break dancers to create a fiery and funky interpretation of Stravinsky's masterpiece.Imagine the graceful firebird somersaulting through the air on a flaming trapeze, a ballerina engaging in a graceful pas-de-deux with a motorcycle stunt rider, or innocent maidens attacking the evil henchmen with flaming swords. And of course, no Crucible production of Firebird would be complete without a 1970's Pontiac Firebird.Proceeds from this production help support the Crucible's art education programs. Firebird runs April 9-12 and 16-19, with performances Wednesday through Saturday each week.Check out the video promo with clips from the last fire ballet (Romeo & Juliet) and the new list of spring classes at the Crucible, too.

Freezing Grand Central Station

A couple hundred people created an event in Grand Central Station in NYC simply by freezing in place. The event was coordinated by Improv Everywhere, a group that has managed to create some wonderfully amazing events with good coordination, a lot of volunteers, and not much else. Who needs a big budget to do something this fun and memorable? The plan: Get a couple hundred people to freeze in place in GCS for five minutes. People stopped mid-conversation, mid-stride, even mid-paper drop. The execution: Flawless. Improv Everywhere pageNote: my landlord participated in one of their events at a Home Depot. He loved it and if you're near NYC, check out one of their events in the future.

Fundraising for Non-profit Organisation?

Dear all, I am currently a Volunteer with an NGO (Aids info service and Sexuality) and we are planning to have activities on the 14th of February which is Valentine's Day to allow to get some funds that we can use to support the activities during the year.  My question would be what can we do in order to make this event very successful as well as to maximise revenue.  What we have plan is to have an event where couples would reserve a table and have dinner then by late night to have a dance party. Here are a list of things that we have/are still being discussed. Place of event Procedures/ Permits DJ Sponsorship Bar Kitchen Tickets Cash Desk Decoration Volunteers Marketing It would be very interesting to add use many cheap and DIY easy things to make the event look very different and more appealing.  For all the points mentioned above it would be nice to have more ideas about those as well and if new categories of things needs to be added you are most welcome to share it with.  Could ywe please shareme more ideas of what can be done to make the event more successful and memorable for everyone

xmega event-based IRCOM?

The IRCOM module has a capability of connecting to the uart not through a standard pin, but through the event system. This should make it possible to get IrDA input data for the IRCOM module from a pin other than standard or alternate RX pin for that uart.  But I haven't had much luck getting this facility working.  Has anybody used it?  Google shows nothing. I am actually getting data, but it's not the data that is being sent via IrDA. I think my problem may be that I don't know which events to configure the event system for.  I've tried the following: low level high level (i.e., low level + invert pin) rising and falling edges rising and falling edges with inverted pin With each of these, the IRCOM system does get data to the uart, but the data is not correct (and it's not consistent, either--the same IrDA packet generates different outputs at different times). Is a clock needed? Any thoughts?

I hear about it through Tech Shop

I went to the I3d summit this past week during the Autodesk event in Vegas. I found out about this event through the new Techshop Chandler location, and with my ASU ID I got a free ticket to the event which was awesome. I was mainly interested in this event to find out more about design software and 3d printers. I found the event to be very useful for getting a general idea of what the industry is doing and where it is going. Being a non engineering or design expert, just a guy with an interest, I didn't get as much as I would have I liked. I heard from a lot of speakers but one of the most interesting to me was Alice Taylor who is CEO of MakieLab. She was one of the few speakers who are currently running a competently 3D printer based company and discussed how they have found success. Also, the key note speaker, Jeff Ma, was very interesting and drove home one of the main points of the day; just try, don't put to much time or effort into over thinking, put more into action. That is kind of the vibe that I got from the whole event, that a lot of people don't know what this industry is but there much hope for its growth and impact on society. www.techshop.ws

Great event to show off your cool contraptions!!!

I just thought I would let you know of an event I'm producing in September in Northern Ca. It's going to be quite Edwardian-Futurist in orientation and aesthetic. The event is a human-powered, kinetic, rail-bound sculpture race and so much more. We have negotiated with the city of Santa Rosa, Ca., to close down a number of streets and we will be using the Railroad Square Depot parking lot and railroad tracks for our main event. There will be an array of bicycle based contraptions. Exhibitions of Mechanical and Artistic Wonders by all sorts of notorious tinkers from around the Bay Area. (Cyclecide, Kinetic Steam Works, Bryan Tedrick, Todd Barricklow, Neverwas Haul and more) There will be food booths, amazing craft vendors, all day music, random circus acts, large art installations and sideshow performances as well. www.handcarregatta.com

Question: Best materials to build a meter height elevator (3 floors)

I have a challenge, and that is, to build a 3 floor elevator. The main frame was built using 2mm carbon steel sheet and rivets, and painted blue. The frame, 950mm height, 250mm width. I thought of using doors (two halfs, opening to opposite sides). What I'm lacking is: • the motors to open the doors (already have one for the cabin, which is more sheet); how strong they need to be• the doors; more sheet? They will be on the main frame. And, should the doors slide on a U like tube to prevent them from woobling? or use gear racks weld to the lower part of the door? And, how would I join the doors with the motors, pulleys and belts?. I'm having stupid amounts of difficulty to view how I am to make the doors work. This will run on grafcet, already done too. Just really only need to assemble the doors and its motors.
