Explosives

I'm looking to make explosives for some homemade fireworks. I want something to put in what I already have to give it a nice loud bang. I don't have a clue where to buy stuff like potassium or salt peter and all that good stuff. But if you could give me a few suggestions, that would be appreiciated.

Measuring an explosion

While this may not be the best instructable I believe it would be helpful for many people doing science fairs (ie: ME). So here is the question said instructable would answer: How do you measure the force of an explosion, specifically of gases or liquids used in fuels? I have been racking my brain on this but everything i have come up with seems like it would be inaccurate. Thanks for any help

DIY Minor Explosive

Does anyone know of any under the sink materials to make small explosives out of. I have looked on the internet and found kn03 and all that stuff and stump remover and stuff but I can't get that now. I am looking for an answer like, Mix some alcohol with bleach, put it on a towel to dry. Then mix it with (fill in blank) and let it dry again. The cut the towel and it is explosive powder.  I know that recipe is fake but that is the kind of thing I am looking for. I am not going to hurt somebody. I am just interested in pyro stuff and have been trying a few things but it is kind of hard to do it right. Please help!

How to do a hollywood style explosion

Hey, dose anyone know how to do a Hollywood style explosion. Sort of like the ones in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where there is a large fireball. I have heard of taking a plastic soda bottles and filling them with gas, but I was not very fond of this idea.

Music Video Help?

Me and my friends are making a music video for a class we chose the song "A Dirge For The Underground" by Attica! Attica! We have most of it  done, but we are having problems with the last shot, we are doing of an explosion (not with actual bombs, just implying there are bombs). We don't mean like Die Hard, Action Movie, Jump to the Ground at the last second explosion, but the explosions you traditionally see when a building explodes, lot of smoke and debris as opposed to fire and a slightly sooty hero/heroine. It's just going to be blowing a lot of immediate debris and smoke blowing outward and then smoke drifting up. Best idea we've had so far is rent a big ass fan and set up a temporary business of cleaning out fires lol. We unfortunately do not have access to the media lab so digital effects are unfortunately not an option. Any better ideas (that don't damage the location, the owner would be pisssssssssssssed)?

Exploding color pigments - need ideas to make

Hello everyone, I am working on a film project and I need to make small explosions of colored pigments and/or powder. Below is a link to a few sample photos of the affect that I am trying to achieve. http://photogrvphy.com/pedro-aguilar-bang/ I have tried many different techniques from impact to compressed air. But I am not getting the shapes that I am looking for. I am thinking  that the best technique might be some sort of controlled explosion. This could be something detonated within a pile of the powder or potentially (and more complicated) and fully concealed shell that includes the powder. I will primarily be shooting straight down above the powder so it really only needs to explode up and out. And again, these are relatively small blasts. I would estimate the powder blasts in the images from the link are only approximately 2' in width at the most. And help would be greatly appreciated!

Sparklers and the meaning of life

I have been playing with sparklers for ages now the latest experiment was to do several layers of aluminum foil and duct tape around two packets of sparklers and putting some arrow fletchs on them... the last one we tried went across three paddocks and nearly took out a shetland pony :-( we measured it the next day and it came up to 150 metres. However i have allways been looking for explosions... sidetracking slightly here but i actually got an explosion my bro welded up a pyramid the size of a soccer ball i filled it with sparkler dust dad wasnt very happy about the huge hole it left in our roof when it exploded and sent 6ml plate in the air for over 10 seconds that was the dummest thing ive done so im looking to down scale slightly with less shrapnel. So in conclusion Im after a recipe using roughly $30 worth of sparklers to explode keeping in mind that i live in Aus so some matierals are harder to come by. thanks everybody any feedback is supported so keep the comments flowing :-)

flame igniter

Joho! i am making something similar to the "fireslinger" made by tetranite. The big difference is that mine w ill use short jolts of gasoline, that come from a perfume tester, so there will be short big flames, but i need something to ignite the small cloud of gasoline. the problem is, that it cant be a flame, or a torch, because it will be mounted on the wrist. so i will need a reliable ignition source, like a electric shock, the only problem with electricity i use, is that the sparks are too small to ignite everything, so i need bigger sparks, made by anything that will easily spark!

I need help explaining the shape of this nebula Answered

Http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2014/10/Butterfly_death_throes This image is the "Butterfly Nebula". I'm having trouble understanding it's shape. According to the accompanying blurb, the shape indicates a "bipolar nebular, where fast-moving gas can escape more easily from the poles of the dying star than around its equator. This creates a lobed structure reminiscent of an hourglass, or, as in this case, a giant butterfly." But... why? Why can the gases escape more easily from the poles?  Why is it harder to escape at the equator? Surely, if it was blasting from the poles, we would see a more linear shape, long "beams" of material shooting out of each end?  This image looks to me as if material blasted away from the equator, but parallel to the poles, almost as if the two halves of the star's surface were peeled apart, like turning half an orange skin inside out. Anybody got a borderline high-school/university level explanation for the shape?

What is the white powder in firecrackers?

I took apart some basic firecrackers, they have a green fuse, waterproof, etc. So inside, I found some grey-ish powder (suspect it is Gunpowder) and a lot more white powder. The Firecrackers do not give of a huge flash, so I am asking. What is the white powder, what does it do, and should I keep it? (Please no answers like "You shouldn't play around with that" and other negative responses. I am looking from a makers point of view.)

Worst prank EVER

So I broke a wheel off my lawnmower, no big deal, just weld it back on. How was I supposed to know that a wooden stump would break it? Anyways, since i have a shitty flux core mig welder from Harbor Freight, I decided I'd ask a friend to use their gas mig to fix it. I bring the lawn mower over, bring the welder outside, clamp the wheel bracket back on, and start the weld. All of a sudden, there's a huge ball of fire all over my mask. I immediately stop welding, and jump backwards.. yelling out, while he sits there on the ground laughing. He switched the argon with acetylene, at 10psi. Not cool. It was hilarious, but not cool.

Is it safe to make your own mortar tube? Answered

A friend and I are putting on a (legal) fireworks show tonight with commercial fireworks. I haven't finished my fireworks ignitor yet, so we're going to be lighting the fireworks with punks and running away. We're going to set up two "stations", one for each of us so one person can set something up while another sets something off. The problem is, the mortar set we bought only comes with one tube. I'm considering making another one out of PVC of the same size as the cardboard mortar tube, but this concern my friend. Is this unsafe, even if I stabilize the PVC and if it's the same size as the original tube? 7/6/10 UPDATE: I know it's past the fourth, but I'm still interested in kowing the answer. Thanks, Noahh

I also need an electric fuse so it can be set off manually not by having to wait. So if any one knows how to make that too.  I was going to use black powder but wondered if there is a better way. Danger in separating compressor head from tank?

Wasn't sure where else to put this, I'm trying to turn an old ambulance into a shop truck and I'd like to use the stock giant O2 tanks on the side as the reservoir for pneumatic tools. How dangerous would it be to rig the compressor head somewhere else in the truck and pipe the air to the tanks? I'd of course include a pressure release valve and some sort of cup to catch moisture since these tanks wouldn't have a bottom valve (though I doubt a full on air dryer would be practical). I was hoping to use flexible tubing to run the air but I doubt that would be safe at tank pressure. Would black iron and pipe tape be enough? Am I setting myself up for a world of hurt? These tanks would be powering pneumatic tools and possibly a media blaster, thanks for any advice, Mac
