The new "face" of clocks.

Two men in their bedroom, with time on their hands... Building clocks. An elegant, simple new design of clock is being produced by two entrepreneurs in a bedroom. The spiral face rotates, clockwise, every 12 hours, slowly winding a small ball up the coiled face.  At the twelfth hour, the ball drops into the centre of the face and back to the beginning. The clock is an art piece, costing hundred of pounds, but I bet you could build your own version from off-the-shelf parts or a recycled clock. After all, the prototype was knocked together from beer cans and gaffa tape... BBC video article. Aspiral website. Advertising video: Oddly philosophical video:

Facial Robot Controll

Facial feature detection is an interesting addition to robotics. Much of human communication is done without verbs and nouns so a robot that can pick up on visual cues from the human face will probably be leagues ahead of it's peers. I imagine that using this feature it can pick up the disconect between words and facial expression to get a understanding of sarcasm. Turing test, here we come!Face Controlling Robots

Tongue and mouth model.

I work at a speech training center, and I need to illustrate how to make certain sounds. I thought the best way was to use an adjustable tongue and cheek model. Doesn't have to be a real replica of a tongue, just something to illustrate the tongue and cheek positions for different sounds. Needs to be adjustable. Any ideas? Thanks.

windmill on face of truck/bus ? Answered

The windmill on the car doesnt work as your adding more force in the opposite direction to the work done by the engine. What about using the frictional energy on the face of bigger vehicles like trucks and buses that exist already to run a small windmill. Probably charge a battery or use it effectively in some other way. I cannot see a direct negative to this except finding the way i can place a turbine without increasing the opposing force and using as much of the existing one

Semi Autos (Face the Truth)

Semi auto guns are very cool. I agree but we have to face the facts. The way a real gun works is the pin hit the primer on the bullet igniting the powder and the extra gas is used to release the shell and load another bullet. How can we replicate this powerfully. Even today real bolt action guns are more powerful than semi autos. I am afraid to say that is just isn't practical to make that out of knex.

Verifying Age Using Face Recognition?

Magazine photos fool biometric age verifier in Japan. In their never ending quest to automate every aspect of human life Japan has recently installed cigarette vending machines that will scan your face to verify your age before giving you a smoke. Kids realizing that all the robot wants is some wrinkles have learned that all they need to do is hold up a magazine image of some geezer and then they can puff away. It makes me happy to see that no matter how "advanced" technology becomes, there's often an easy overlooked loophole. Let's hope that trend continues. _BGvia: boingboing.net

Help needed! Making a face for a custom action figure Answered

I've been working on an action figure set based on my family & friends for Christmas.  I have the bodies made and they look alright.  I've got some accessories planned if I have time. I am having trouble getting the face to look decent.  I don't have a lot of sculpting experience, but I've been doing alright so far.  I don't need them to be photo-realistic or anything.  But I do want them to at least resemble the person. Do you have any ideas, tips, or websites that can help me out?

How to remove watch face/dial?

I have been trying to clean the crystal/glass and a minute hand of a watch. I do not have a tool for removing a watch crystal/glass so I thought I would try removing the movement and face from the back. I managed to remove the movement but the face/dial seems to be extremely firmly built into the case, see photo, and I cannot seem to remove it from the back. It is a chronograph and the two chrono buttons do not screw out like the crown does, which stop the metal face/dial coming out too, but regardless the face/dial seems to be extremely firmly pressure fitted so I cannot see a way of removing it without bending or breaking it. Is the only option to remove the crystal/glass itself to clean it up? If so, I don't have a special tool for removing it, has anyone removed a crystal like this with a knife or other tools? It is a plastic/acrylic domed type crystal/glass.Thanks.

Front door unlock with face recognition

I have a "Danalock" attached to my front door ( works with Bluetooth ) and compatible with Apples Home kit. As all standard front doors there is a small "spyhole". All works perfectly I use Home kit to lock and unlock the front door. This idea just poped in my mind that, what if i use one of the "raspberry pi " cam or any other small cams put it in the spy hole, then some how program it to connect to Pi so it can use face recognition.lets say I avoid using any app at all as soon lets say I or any user arrives at front door the face recognition allows the user and just for the fun of it plays a greeting "hello & welcome user1". So there is Pi cam + pi and Danalock. I would appriciate if there are any ideas or sloutions or comments etc.

They use to call them porch people. They were made of woman's stocking. They were stuffed with fiber fill to make the head and would then sew eyes, nose and mouth on them there hands and feet were also made of stockings. Then they would dress them up and they really looked like people. They were very popular in the 80's. In Clinton N.J. And whoever made them, would charge about 250.00. they would call them porch people. Does anyone know how they were made?

Any tips on some simple fabrication?

I'm trying to plan ahead for October, I work for a haunted hayride. Now my problem is I just purchased a full-face respirator(gas mask) from an Army/Navy Surplus, now I know why it was there. I figured I'd be able to find some accessories on the company website, unfortunately that didn't happen. They've moved on to a different design that makes getting parts for my mask a little difficult(their new design is dual exhalation/single inhalation). My mask is a single exhalation valve(bottom/middle), dual inhalation valve(top/sides) mask, I can attach two filters onto it if I need to. What I want to do is retrofit a hose so that it can screw in to the inhalation valves, where the filters go. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Smart Phone face glass replacement kit

What this world really needs is a temperature controlled face glass removal and replacement kit. Most of my working friends that have Smart Phones have broken or shattered touch screens. A quick search for touch screen replacement provide a bunch of Youtube videos and DIY kits for under $20. All the vids and kits say that too much, or too little heat will destroy the actual touch sensitive surface under the glass. The only source of heat they use is a blow dryer. I already break enough stuff that is not technology that I do not understand. My brain says a flat aluminum plate with suction holes to hold it in place and act as a handle during removal. Temperature controlled that can be set to the exact temperature for easy removal and replacement without applying too much pressure on the inner touch sensitive part. The online kits offer plastic wedges for popping the glass loose when/if you get the right temperature. An exact temperature face glass removal kit with the necessary wedges or possible strong monofilament fishing line to ease the glass away from the base. Everything I mentioned is beyond my knowledge and/or skills, but DIY Instructables or even kits to help out friends in need would be awesome and probably a good source of income for the entrepreneur.

what are the problems i can face in this project? Answered

My goal is transmit square wave with certain frequency from fm transmitter and receive this square wave by fm receiver on the other side in order to be measured by pic microcontroller and the range between TX and RX is 100m or 120m max  i want it to be as simple as i can so i made a research and my plan is : 1) square wave generator using 555 IC so i can control the frequency and amplitude the circuit is in the following link: http://www.learningaboutelectronics.com/Articles/Adjustable-square-wave-generator-circuit-with-a-555-timer.php 2) the output of square wave generator i will use it as input for Fm transmitter the circuit is in the following link :https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Ultimate-FM-Transmitter/ 3) i will use small radio i have to receive the square wave on radio speaker the sound should be like the following link : http://onlinetonegenerator.com/ to be sure that my square wave has reached the speaker  4) then i will hack the radio :) and remove the speaker and use the radio output as input for pic microcontroller to measure the square wave frequency   so eventually the stages will be like this: sinwave genetrator > FM transmitter > FM receiver > microcontroller used to measure frequency and display it on LCD screen  i made fm transmitter before and received sin wave tone by fm radio so i expect the problem will be in using FM receiver as input to microcontroller to measure frequency  what do you think about this plan ??

Blue snowball mic and windows 7?

Alright, so today I received my new new Blue Snowball only to find it is incompatible with windows 7, or at least that's what I thought. After searching through the web for a fair few hours I found that many people had got their mic working with windows 7 yet there was no driver or firmware update available to download. I managed to find a firmware update although this stopped part way through demanding administrator rights which I gave it but it still wouldn't work :L I'm using the new macbook pro with retina display if that helps with motherboard compatibility. If anybody has a blue snowball I would really appreciate a download link to the driver you are using Thanks in advance Will
