Maker Faire This Weekend!

Is anyone going to be even close to Austin this weekend? If so, drop by our booth and say "hi" on Saturday or Sunday. We'd love to talk to you and give you some stickers. Our stuff is already heading out on a big ol' truck, but Canida and I will be heading out later this week to see what Austin, Texas has to offer and bask in the Texas atmosphere. Hope to see you there.

Maker Faire unboxed - ZDNET

The Maker Faire, which took place over the weekend in San Mateo, Calif., celebrated the do-it-yourself ethos. This manifested in both the "makers" who brought their personal projects and the attendees, including the ones who chose to interact with the projects. The festival was the third in San Mateo, in addition to one held last fall in Austin, Texas. It is put on by the people behind Make magazine. In 2006, 20,000 people attended the Bay Area event. In 2007, that number swelled to 40,000. It is not clear how many people attended over the weekend. But if the hefty crowds were any indication, the figure surely increasedArticle and photo Gallery

Maker Faire -- I gotta write this down before I forget

Okay, I realized this awhile ago, and its soooo cool, and I keep forgetting to tell people.I don't know if this was intentional, or not, but anyway. If you know French, you'll appreciate "Maker Faire", because faire can* mean "to make".Maker to make! I like the ring ;-)*Normally, its translated "to do", but it can also be translated this way... even though its barely used like this...

Make Faire 2008! Who is planning on Attending?

Make Faire 2008!Hi,I was wondering who is planning on attending the Make Faire on May 3 and 4th at the San Mateo Fairgrounds? I convinced my parents to come out (all the way from Wisconsin!!) because it is also my uncles 60th birthday. I will be there on Saturday the 3rd but not the 4th. This is my first time going and I am really looking forward to it. In case you don't know what the make faire is here is a quick note from the site."Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It's for creative, resourceful people of all ages and backgrounds who like to tinker and love to make things."Also will instructables have some type of booth up? That would be cool. Tickets are on sale right now.Hope to see you all their! Thanks JoeBTW this "Faire" spelled with an "e" at the end intentionally. I think it is the old English spelling i don't know though.

Maker Faire deadline fast approaching!

Have something awesome that you'd like to show off at the Maker Faire and for some reason haven't applied yet? Then get moving! The deadline is March 31, less than a week from now. Go go go! And of course even if you don't want to show something off you'll want to go because we'll be there. Yes, there will be lots of other things to see and play with and do, but most importantly we'll have a table so you can come by and say "hi!" We might even have cookies to share. 2009 Maker Faire

Our presentation booth details for this year's Bay Area Maker Faire has just arrived and all of us here at Instructables are revved up and rearing to go. We are especially excited that Radioactive_Legos has decided to show off his 48V Electric Bike at our booth; it was a runner-up in the Craftsman Workshop of the Future Contest. If you have an awesome project that you have posted to Instructables and would like the chance to show it off without getting your own booth (having your own booth is awesome, but a hefty time commitment - sometimes it's nice to be able to see the Maker Faire!), contact noahw and let him know! We'll probably have room for your project at the Instructables booth, and we'd love to showcase as many cool user projects as we can. Also! Even though this year's Maker Faire is only now two months away, you still another 10 days to sign up for your very own presentation booth. Sign up at the official Maker Faire website.Whether you're coming to present your work or gawk, we look forward to seeing you!... and for those of you on the east coast or in the UK, we have you in our hearts ;-)

Important Info regarding Maker Faire UK, for all those whom might wish to go.

Hi all, Well since the original topic regarding the maker faire i have been trying to work a few things out. Ive been in contact with Graham from o'reilly. He seemed very happy that some of us wanted to get involved. And also commented on the instructables table at the maker faire austin. Now, me and hannah are seriously thinking about attending, and im asking you guys if you wish to do so also. Graham asked me to fill out a form (added as a picture here). So, these are the questions you need to answer. 1. Are you seriously thinking about attending the Faire? 2. Would you be prepared to bring some of your items/ projects to show off? 3. Would you like to be involved with the running of a 'instructables table' 4. If there are only a small amount of us (say 4-10) we could actually find a hotel for us all to stay in? Would people wish that, or just want to make there own arrangements? Obviously, the sooner we sort things out, the better, some of us will have to book holidays off work etc. So you need to make a commitment... even if the eventual answer is no, i need to know how many people are serious when they say they want to go. That is all... Jake

Thanks for the hospitality!

Hi everyone! It's been a week since Maker Faire, sorry it's taken so long to post this--I came down with some sort of awful bug the day after I got back to Eugene.  I've spent the last several days (including today, my birthday!) just lying around and feeling sorry for myself. Anyway, I'm starting to feel a bit better this evening, so I just thought I'd say thanks!  I had a blast at Maker Faire, helping out at the instructables booth and meeting folks from HQ, fellow authors, and just plain fans of the site.  It was really, really great meeting you all and seeing the enthusiasm instructables brings out in people. In particular, hello and thanks to Mikeasaurus, Laura, Quincy, Gregg, Randy, Sarah, and anyone whose name I forgot in the madness that was last weekend, for making me feel welcome.  Special thanks to Christy and Eric for really making me feel at home in a new city!  The week before MF which I spent working in central California, and the couple of weeks leading up to it that I spent preparing for the trip, were incredibly busy and hectic for me.  It was fantastic to cap that all off by seeing the weird and wonderful sights at Maker Faire, and meeting for the first time in real life people who I had only known previously on the internet.  It really made me feel like a part of the instructables community. Thanks so much, and hopefully I'll get to see more of SF on my next visit!  I didn't even get a chance to see instructables HQ! Ian

Jug Hero to be at Maker Faire

The Make Blog has announced that Jug Hero will be at Maker Faire this year. You play the game by blowing over the mouth of the jug in time to the scrolling images similar to Guitar Hero. For extra points you can clink the bottles together. The graphics look to be a little lacking helping you out with the timing, but it's a cool idea. Hopefully it'll get a little fine-tuned for the big event.

Does the Bay area Maker Faire happen every year? Answered

I didn't get to go to the 2010 one, and when I saw pictures of it, I was completely disappointed that I couldn't make it. Is there one every year, or is the 2011 one only in the UK?

Newcastle Makers Faire 2011 (UK)

After last years Makers Faire, me and steveastrouk decided we had to make 'Instructables at the Makers Faire' a reality. Since then we have discussed it in detail with various people from our first UK Meet up. Jayefuu and I came up with the idea of selling an Instructables Card Game to help raise some money for activities at the Faire. So we now have some funding in place for making it a possibility. The Makers Faire takes place on the 12-13 March 2011 as part of the Newcastle Sciencefest. More details can be found at the Makers Faire UK Website. If you want to take part in the Makers Faire as a Maker be sure to register your interest before the 26th November. I have already registered our interest in an Official Instructables section. We already have a small group of people on board to help out with the Instructables section, but we would be more than happy to have more people on board. We would be looking specifically for anyone with a great project that we could have on show, or for people to interact with. Obviously you need to be up in newcastle for the 12-13th March. Register interest below, or contact myself, steveastrouk, or Jayefuu directly. I plan to post another topic closer the date letting you know we are going to be there, and what we are upto! Come and meet us at Maker Faire this weekend!

Maker Faire is this weekend! We'll have a booth where you can meet the Instructables staff, see some cool things we'll be bringing along and pick up something extra cool if you've published an Instructable. If you're gonna go I'd recommend going early as it was packed last year. If you go later in the day, try taking an alternate route into the area besides taking the exit from 101 and getting stuck in the slow traffic line. Last year I took a different exit and parked in a residential area a half mile out and it was easy as compared to others who got stuck in a 2 hour wait. Also be sure to check out the Maker Faire car travel page.So go early! See lots of cool stuff! Stop by and say hi!

I'm Going...

... to the Maker Faire at Newcastle this afternoon, representing Instructables along with gmjhowe (who's done most of the work), Steveastrouk and others. There should be some sort of internet access, but with a lot of people using it, I can't promise to post anything over the weekend. Look for posts on Monday, or, even better, come along to the Centre for Life, find the Instructables stall, and say hello to us all.

This, From That - Maker Faire and Instructables in the New York Times

Instructables and Maker Faire received some nice coverage from the New York Times article This, From That."This is a real geek fest," says Professor Schalk, a high-energy physicist in both senses of the phrase."If I was a kid, I'd wet my pants here," he joked. Some 65,000 people came to see the sprawling display of inventiveness and potentially hazardous fun. Many of them read Make magazine and its sister publication, Craft, and go to Web sites like Instructables.com that encourage people to take on projects and share what they learn. (Recent online projects have shown people how to convert a novelty French-fry telephone into a carrying case for an iPod; how to make a computer-powered coffee warmer from an old Intel Pentium chip plugged into a P.C.'s U.S.B. port; and how parents and children can build a small vibrating robot together.)By far, my favorite quote from the piece:"It's deeply American," said Xeni Jardin, an editor of BoingBoing. As for the family-friendly setting, she said, "It's like Burning Man without all the icky hippie elements, without the pants-free guy on a bike."And more:Roxanne Stafford, a designer who visited the Faire without knowing much about it, said she was "a little overwhelmed" by the size, the variety and the noise. She added, however, that she found an underlying message in it all. With the ghastly images from the Iraq war and the uses of technology that usually make the news, it is easy to conclude that people simply make things and use technology "to destroy one another," she said."Things like Maker Faire give people hope," she said. "Creativity is the best expression of humanity."More press about Instructables here.

Derby Mini Maker Faire Photos

The Derby Mini Maker Faire has now finished. I took a *lot* of photos, and this is a selection, in a pretty random order - can you spot anybody you know? I think we all (Gmjhowe, Rainbow Han, Jayfuu, PKM, Kitewife, Conker-X, Roger-X, and myself) thoroughly enjoyed it.  The atmosphere was really good, lots of friendly faces, lots of new friends (big shout out to Phenoptix, who was an event sponsor), and more members of Hackspaces than I have ever seen in one place.  I didn't see any sad faces, of any age - it's a sign of the times that there seemed to be a greater proportion of the visitors who had some idea what Making is all about, and loved the idea of Instructables. The organisers did a very good job, looked after us all very well (I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes tour of the museum itself, and loved the pint of local beer we were treated to).  I hope they do another one - I'll be there like a shot.  I think we were all inspired with ideas for new projects. One particular shout goes to "Pics to Knits", who have created a tool to turn digital images into knitting patterns.  Kitewife is already planning a project using their tools. If you were there, and took any photos or videos, please add them in the comments... Update: Blog entry by the yarn-bombers from Angel Eden, with some nice photos and a knitting pattern to boot: LINK. I found these videos on YouTube

UK Makers Faire Newcastle, are you actually going?

So, both me and Hannah are actually going to the Makers Faire in Newcastle, we are staying in Durham, and catching the train into Newcastle for each of the days. The hotel is booked, and we both have the time off work, so were are going to be there for sure. My question is, who else can we expect to see there? Have you planned on going? It would be nice to meet up with anyone who is going, if only for a quick hello. I am hoping to have a version of my avatar on show so you can pick me out from the crowd. I also hope to have some Instructables flyer/hand out cards. Perhaps with my username link, as well as general info on the site itself. Yes I know other topics have been put up about the makers faire, but this is an ultimate final roll call to see exactly who is going.

Instructables Members at NYC Maker Faire

It was an absolute pleasure to meet so many Instructables luminaries at the 2010 NYC Maker Faire.  I managed to grab these few group images during our Instructables office hours.  One of my favorite things about in-person events is hearing how Instructables has positively impacted so many people.  Of the many stories I heard this weekend, the best was from a woman in her mid-thirties who told me of working with her dad to solder together the Electric Umbrella, and how it was the best father-daughter bonding experience of her entire life.   I'm looking forward to the next time I can meet more of you!

Concerning the upcoming Maker's Faire in Queens, NY....

Unless some sort of miracle happens  (something I really doubt at this point), I will be unable to attend the Maker Faire in Queens NY this year which is only 6 day away ! I was really hoping to be able to arrange for a way up and a way to stay, but due to circumstances beyone my control (more on that later), I will not have the way nor the way to stay;  so sadly it will be a no show for me.   Next year, if I survive until then, I WILL be there unless I have lost everything here (I am wondering about that prospect too due to the very same "circumstance" I mentioned before).  Those that are able to go, I want to see all kinds of pictures (please).  Thanks !
