Fart for science!

Deep down, everybody loves a whoopee cushion.Yes, even you do.But what makes the funniest rubber trump? Short and high? Long and flobberly? And then there is the flip side of coin - what sounds do we hate most? Babies crying? Dental drills? The University of Salford Acoustic Research Centre is running two parallel online surveys to answer those questions, and you can help - follow this link to find both surveys. The fart survey is linked to Red Nose Day, so I expect the results will be out in mid-March.Sound surveys(No personal data is collected beyond gender, age and general location)

Fart punisher

I read about that remote control for the tv, triggered by methane gas, and i thought about building a tracked robot equiped with a videocamera and a gas powered softgun, for sneak attacks in softgun battles. So how about this: Combine the two, and get a softgun that promptly gives anyone who releases their gases in an innapropriate place (note; my car) a plastic bullet in their thigh! Just for good fun ofcourse ;P Could be a fun project when winter sets in, but problem is, i don't really have any experience in building mechanic/electronic thingys (at least none that works) so... any ideas? or anyone wanna give it a try? Cheers :)

what are the chemicals used in fart bags? Answered

I have been looking on the net for what ingredients go into fart bags, which are these fart bombs with powder in them and a liquid inside a small packet, which you squish , then they react to produce hydrogen sulfide and then the bag pops and a rotton egg smell fills the area. i realy want to know what it is that goes into those because i want to make a 10xbigger fart bage, but i dont want to have to use the powder and liquid from real ones because the only ones i can get cost $15 for a packet of 10 which i feel is too expensive when i know there may be an alternative method.

Programmable fart machine like device?

I am trying to figure out a method to create a remotely trigureable speaker play a Pewee Hermann laugh during my mythology class (the teacher there is deathly afraid of him for some odd reason). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this? Many thanks.

Modded Fart Machine, plays the 14-20 kilohertz sound

Ok, because I am not so tech savy in circuitry, I am willing to give my first daughter's virginity and an Island in Dubai to the person that can show me how to build this: Ok, the idea is a Modded fart machine that plays that intensely annoying high pitched sound that only young people can hear, between 14 and 20 kilohertz...hopefully somebody will know how to switch the programmed chips and utilize the fart machine's speaker and remote control system. It would also be quite helpful if you could add a 9-volt battery with a resistor for long life, and possibly put in a more powerful speaker for maximum annoyance.

Sleep deprived brain fart...Solar Panel Lightbox Generator

OK first off let me tell you I don't know much at all about solar panels, wiring, or electrical at all. So to those that want to flame save your breath. Now at 3:30 am my time I woke up and since I couldn't sleep logged on to Instructables because something was bothering me. The something that wouldn't allow me to get back to the sleep which I craved was the idea for a Solar Panel Lightbox Generator. Now I see the logic in thinking about some of the perpetual motion generators and how they are impossible. And I believe my idea is not possible either, but till I get some info from someone that knows more about electric and solar panels I don't think I will be able to rest. So here is the idea, someone please explain how my thinking is wrong. Build a box of solar panels faceing inward with a light source inside of the box. once the panels start to charge a battery, use the battery to power the light. First off I know direct sunlight is optimal for the panels, but I'm thinking "outside/Inside" the box. How much light does it take for a panel to actually start creating current? How much energy does the light use to create the light? How do you measure how much light (candle power?) a bulb/LED or what ever produces and is it enough to " power " a solar panel/cell? My thinking is if a LED/incandescent/haligion light can produce enough light, with the right amount of solar cells it could power its self after start up. I know things degrade, bulbs burn out and all that. What I guess I'm saying is mathematically could this happen? Since I know so very little about solar and electrical in general is it possible? And if it's possible could more panels be added to make more power than it uses? There's my brain fart, feel free to point out the flaws so I can get some sleep tonight.

Methane Captured from Cows

So we all know that Cows are killing the planet in that they are producing a huge amount of Methane from their farts. I say we build a massive bubble around the pastures, and we capture the gases, burn them for fuel, and clean up the waste gas as much as possible. The ideal situation would be for people to stop eating beef and using cows all together, but alas steak is tasty. I am aware that they have been treating the cows manure and getting gases from that, which they then burn. However as the cows fart, they punch massive holes in the ozone. To conclude, the cows must die...steak for all, dibs on the ribs...

Of solder and circuits

To dodge an onslaught of summer boredom, I'd like to fart around with small scale electronics projects (LEDs, maybe a circuit board, etc.). I hope that by the time I finish farting around, I would have something nifty to post on this website. Unfortunately, I have little practical knowledge of this stuff (other than what I learned five years ago in high school electronics). I mean, I don't even know how one technically refers to "this stuff." Can anyone recommend some good books or a general method of wetting one's feet before jumping into the pond? Highly technical sources are obviously beyond me at this point, so I'm looking for introductory-level information that can be flexibly applied to whatever bizarre project pops into my mind on Friday afternoon.

So here for your enjoyment 2 never before seen Myths. Missing flatus experiments (Lighting Farts, Do pretty Girls Fart :) Just a quick note. There are two versions of mythbusters. One with a British announcer and one with a stupid American announcer> I hate the American announcer. He sounds so stupid. In general British people sound smarter than Americans in my opinion. I think that Americans think British sound smarter because Americans are only exposed to the only the smarter smaller percentage of the British. Why do you think British people sound smarter than Americans and what do you think of this great hidden clips. Thanks

Cubicle Voice Silencer/Muffler

Hi I work in a cubicle environment with no white noise so a mouse fart can be heard across 8 cubicles in either direction. I've already been pulled in by my manager because of complaints about my voice when I'm on the phone. Can anyone come up with some device that can be placed over mouth and phone to muffle the voice? ZipDart prototyping help

OK, had an idea and went with it for my ZipDart V.2. Unfortunately, currently having a bit of a brain fart of how to put a ratchet mech in. I've tried 7 attempts, 3 have even actuated and of those three none were responsive enough to be at all deserving of the ZipDart name. There is a google photo album linked below of the mech area and the gun on a whole. Feel free to comment either there or here with any ideas or insight. The mech can be complicated, just so long as it takes less than a half an inch of actuation rod travel to actuate and is fairly strong. Thanks for any help--if anyone has any questions or wants any more pictures, just ask. Photo album

Instructables needs international character (letters) support!!!!!

Instructables currently does not support a lot characters from other languages. If you use a character from another language, instructables simply replaces it with some letters and symbols. Since the only other language I use here is spanish, I can only say this has happened to me when writing in spanish. The problem is, that without these characters (like diacritics and a certain spanish letter), many spanish sentences cannot be properly written, therefore altering its meaning. This problem has made it very difficult to use spanish in the site. Is it possible that the staff can do anything about this? Also, if anyone has experienced this problem in another language, please write it in this thread.

Lloyd's Model E340 Series 255A

Look at this old calculator I bought for like $2 at a church sale. I just got around to taking it apart and it looks like a Nixie tube for the display, whatever it is, it's definatly sealed glass. I can't get any pics of it powered up srry because some dumb fart must have left dead batteries in there, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work with fresh batteries. Well I figured out, look at the pictures, someone never cleaned the battery acid out of the inside and it ate away at some of the PCB So I wanna know, can I like hook this tube/display up to my computer through the serial port or something?? It's got 9 digits. Sorry for the sh*t pictures :(

Alter a dress (BARELY too small) with a side zipper?

I have this dress that is just BARELy too small in the bust area.  Its a strapless sweatheart neckline dress.  It has boning a side zipper, so I am not sure what to do. Originally, I thought I would just add some ribbon up the back.  Since its strapless with and really loose once its past the bust area (BRAIN FART, I cannot think of the word...) the ribbon would only lace up about 6 inches in the back.  BUt the zipper is on the side, so I dont know what to do. also, the dress is a sheer fabric, with two layers and will not be the easiest to sew.  And, it has boning. Any ideas?

I feel like I am letting a lot of people down, just because I can not recall (probably because it has been SO long since I have been really active here. At least, if nothing else, I  can write them down so I have something to remind me, in case my life goes haywire again. Thanks all !  OH and if there is a serious person out there that I owe some credit (for an ible using some of their equipment, etc)  please PM me.

Login Error

Computer Specs: Windows 7 64 bit Using Google Chrome latest version Have tried with the new crash happy flash and 10.* Version Problem: Every day I come onto instructibles after school, and start surfing, eventually I reach the point of commenting and click the comment/reply button.  Sometimes after some delay I am prompted to give my username and password, sometimes I am not.  This is all ok except for when I have a brain fart and sit for a good minute or two trying to figure out why nothing is happening.  The biggest thing is that when I log in with the correct username, and any password I feel like typing I get an error message stating something along the lines of username password problem, but it still logs me in anyway.  The only major concern I have is that someone might be able to use my username without needing to know my password.   Photos: Will post them tomorrow when it happens again.

iHome ID3 speaker repairable?

Hi, I need some help with a speaker I tried repairing last summer. It's the left speaker of a fairly new iHome ID3 which was purchased by management for my workplace as a gift for me and my coworkers to enjoy. Well, it got moved around a lot and eventually someone dropped it. Once we realized the left speaker wasn't working I took it apart for a closer look and discovered the center of the left speaker had popped out, but still appeared intact. I thought it would be simple, I just sanded and glued it back in place, then re-soldered it. However, there is now a problem that has become progressively worse. When playing music the lower frequencies cause a 'farting' sound similar to if the diaphragm were damaged, but that part appears intact. Also, when I touch the speaker diaphragm while music is playing the damaged speaker is vibrating only half as much as the fully functioning speaker. Can anyone please help me fix this or diagnose the problem?

WTF JUST HAPPENED?!?!

I wanted to watch the video on this page, but I have dial-up (it would take forever to load, and I would have to be able to resume it because I wouldn't be able to download the whole thing in one sitting), so I got the link for the file in the HTML and downloaded it separately so I could resume it. I reinserted the local file link to the downloaded file into the HTML of the original page to see if I could get it to play in the "blip" video player.Well, it didn't quite work. And the results that I got almost made me shart my self (s**t and fart at the same time). A low-res 8 second video that displayed the words "are you afraid of the dark" while a camera went through tall grass (typical horror movie setting), with the sound of a heart beat in the background. Yes, it scared the hell out of me, although, after watching the movie in a very small screen so nothing in it would actually make me shart myself this time, I couldn't discern any objects or otherwise likely scary things.Yes, holy shat. What the blam just happened? Mind you this was a week ago.

The shop was featured twice on Geekologie and last year I released Boy+Boy and Girl+Girl versions of the most popular set. https://www.etsy.com/shop/boyfriendbadges I've created a couple tiers of promotion for this upcoming V-Day: Use code LUV2016 for 10% off any Etsy shop purchase. Share the shop link on your social media and send me a link.  In return, I'll send you a promo code for 20% off your order. Submit the shop link to your favorite blog (examples --Bored Panda, Kotaku, BuzzFeed, etc). If they feature the shop as a result I'll send you a badge set of your choosing for free! Howtoons the Book Launches!

It's been a long journey since I first looked over Saul's shoulder in our shared 4th-floor MIT Media Lab office and saw the proto-sketches that would become Howtoons, but today the book finally launches! Here's the word directly from Saul:I along with my co-authors and illustrators, Nick Dragotta and Joost Bonsen are proud to announce that today is the official publication and release of our fully-illustrated, science-meets-adventure-and-mischief comic book, HOWTOONS ! The Possibilities are Endless. I know I personally am nervous, relieved, and all of the other things that a first time author can be. You can buy the book directly from AmazonAlthough all of the authors wish to compel you to walk, run, or ride a bike to your local book store and get one there (or demand that they carry copies!).We'd like to thank each and everyone on this email list for their moral and other support in the gestation of this exciting project. Thanks for loaning us your children, your ideas, your inspiration and your feedback. Hopefully we are now returning all of them to you in good healthy order and with interest on top! We'd love to encourage you all to buy hundreds and thousands of copies of this book for all of your favourite 4-94 year olds. The jacket copy says 8-12, but we know that our group of friends have nothing but the most intelligent children (hence extending the age range down to 4) as well as being fundamentally immature and appreciative of fart jokes (hence increasing it to 94).HOWTOONS seeks to put the joy, the story, the adventure, the free-spirit, the fun, the downright ridiculousness, and the real heroicism of science and engineering back into education. We do this through stories and illustrations designed to show children that science and engineering is not only one of the coolest possible things that you can study, but that it touches upon everything in modern life and can be found in the simple objects around you... One tag line we often like to associate with the book is: "See the world for what it can be, not for what it is." The world is increasingly technical, and many of the greatest challenges of the 21st century will require technically aware people whether they are working on science and engineering themselves, or whether they are the artists, writers, accountants, musicians, lawyers, politicians and educators who make the world a rich and interesting place to live. I believe the magnificent artwork of Nick also highlights that there is a genuine marriage between the arts and sciences and the oft cited tension between the two is un-necessary as both come from a desire to create and share new ideas and ways of representing them. You can see our new website, including many samples of HOWTOONS and a regularly updated blog at www.howtoons.com. We'd like to send an especially big thanks and shout out to Ryan McKinley for help with the website (if you don't know him you should! He's a programming powerhouse), and of course also to Phil Torrone, everyone's favourite blogger and DIY mastermind. We'd also love to thank all of the people at O'Reilly media, especially Dale Dougherty, Tim O'Reilly, Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair for including HOWTOONS in their fabulous magazines MAKE and CRAFT (www.makezine.com, www.craftzine.com). Also in the thank-you list should be Judith Regan who plucked us from obscurity to help us get started down the book-making path, and now the wonderful people of Harper Collins Children's Books for all of their help. We should include all of our apologies for editorial lateness!. Naturally we'd like to thank the people at Squid Labs and Eric and Christy of www.instructables.com fame for their support and work in bringing the make-it-yourself ethos to a much larger audience. MIT, MIT's media lab, and MITERS (MIT Electronic Research Society) are also to be whole-heartedly thanked for turning a blind eye to our insanity. The support of all these people and more (you) has been invaluable to us.Not to rest on our laurels — we are already working on a 2nd HOWTOONS book full of more wonderful projects and crazy storylines to encourage you to grab a 9-year-old and relive the joy of messing with world around you just because it's interesting, because rockets are cool, because bugs are fascinating, because flying is magnificent, because mechanisms are intriguing, because a sheet of paper isn't a sheet of paper, it's a work of origami art waiting to (un)fold.Furthermore, we are working on another book project, specifically a selection of DIY projects around the topic of renewable energy presented HOWTOONS-style, in order to encourage energy literacy and intuition amongst the next generation of engineers and scientists. Energy will be one of the key issues of this century and helping people understand all of the options and the promise and beauty of renewable energies is something we believe we can do to help.If you'd like to help support Howtoons in any way we'd love to hear from you; it is still a fledgling project in its infancy trying to wend its way towards fiscal sustainability. The biggest thing most of you can probably do to help is SPREAD THE WORD! Buy some books! Go out and give yourself the experience of reliving the joy of discovering the world by working on some Howtoons projects with your favourite kids (or even better, kids you don't know yet). If you have suggestions for future projects we'd love to hear about them. One of my favourite projects in HOWTOONS Book 1 is an open-source whooppee cushion that delighted my father (and haunted his teachers) when he was a 9-year-old and will hopefully induce raucous laughter everywhere.Again, thank you all.Saul Griffith, Nick Dragotta, Joost Bonsen,co-creators of HOWTOONS!www.howtoons.comPS. Finally, and most importantly I want to wholeheartedly thank my co-authors for their friendships, musings, and hard-work. It's tremendous to work with such great people at the top of their respective games. In case you don't know them (or me):Nick Dragotta first knew the power of comic art when he drew pictures of injuries on the blackboard at school that were so graphic that his fellow classmates had to leave the room to throw up. Since then he has tirelessly practiced the art of comics and researched the great artists of the field. Nick has drawn for Marvel and DC, including Spider-Man, X-men, Fantastic Four, and X-static titles. He is currently passionate about making more comic books for kids. Nick lives in a small apartment with walls lined by the shortened stubs of ruined pencils. He sleeps in a pile of eraser filings, drinks black ink, and exists on a diet of pureed superhero comic books.Joost Bonsen immigrated as a young boy to the United States from the Netherlands with his parents and his personal suitcase full of LEGOs. He grew up in Silicon Valley, California, immersed in that creative and entrepreneurial culture. While Joost was growing up, the vacant lot across the street from home served variously as play space, special effects set, race track, rocket launch pad and more as he and his friends made home movies, practiced being space explorers, and plotted space projects. Joost went to MIT for undergraduate studies in bio–electrical engineering and recently finished his graduate degree at the MIT Sloan School of Management looking at how labs are run, how research themes emerge, and how new technologies are commercialized.Saul Griffith grew up in Australia and his earliest memories of inventing things were of making grappling hooks for climbing trees and buildings. His childhood adventures included making his own rocket–powered toy cars, kites, and enormous puppets. He kept a diary of drawings of his inventions as a kid that included fantastic monorails and airplanes shaped like manta–rays. Saul ended up studying materials science—the structure of the materials we use every day—before going on to MIT to do a PhD in building self–replicating machines and a theory for folding 3–dimensional objects. He now works at Squid Labs in California inventing cool new things for making the world a better place. He still builds kites, they are just much, much bigger now.
