My featured instructable is not in the featured pages

I noticed that my recent last instructable "journal necklace" is been featured but didn't end up in the featured instructables page. And two instructables that I published just a little later and were featured after did…is there something I can do? Thanks to anybody for the help!

Featured Mark

My Fast Hot Glue Mold for Small Things was featured in Crafts: https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-living/channel-craft/?sort=FEATURED , but not marked. Why?

Instructable featured but not showing

I got an e-mail  thay my instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Soldering-Surface-Mount-Parts/ was featured, but on my list of instructables it does not have the featured flag. And it does not appear in the Recent, Featured, or Technology pages.

What does it mean to have a Group featured?

A couple of hours ago, The Robot sent me an e-mail, "Your Group ... was just featured by one of our editors! Look for it on the Instructables home page...". I'm not sure how to interpret this. The normal "Featured" section has I'bles, Slideshows, Videos, and Guides, but not fora. The "Community" section in the lower right corner has individual Forum topics. Has anyone else ever had a Group featured?

Featured?

I dont want to be rude or anything, but I was wondering if I could get featured, I mean my instructable matches all the requirements(Pictures,Spelling/Grammer, Good Documentation) , and even hackaday/kipkay on youtube featured my idea . Here it is: https://www.instructables.com/id/Co-Axial-Pneumatic-BB-Gun/ Here is my Hackaday Feature: http://hackaday.com/2013/03/06/this-maglite-is-a-bb-gun/ And here is what kipkay did with my idea, he gave me a shoutout in the description: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJq5w7gVdtM

Feature Request: k'nex Filter

Would it be possible to somehow implement a k'nex filter for PRO members? I don't really know how the Firefox one works or any programming for that matter, but I was wondering if it was at all viable.

Suggested feature "DoneIt"

An inspiration from Geocaching.  It would be cool to have a feature where members could check a box and post a pic/vid when they have completed a certain instructable.  The "DoneIts" should show up on both the "doers" user/profile page, as well as the instructable owner.  You could also leave a short note on what you may have done different, or any tips and tricks used to complete the project.

A qustion about "FEATURED" articles.

I am here from 6 months, I love how instructables works, very friendly community :) I read some articles about "how to make a good articles?" and I follow the rules, to improve my articles, but that's doesn't work ! I noticed three things: some articles will have over 10,000 view in one day, while others can't have this number with a year, and it's not about the subject or how good was that article! I was reading about contest rules, I think it's not fair to feature some articles and let others suffer without viewers. right?! Last thing, some people have 90% featured articles, and sometimes over 100 articles, & it's not clear enough to be featured. I think there is something tricky here :P

Feature request: multi-language versions of the same instructable

We miss out a multi-language feature in instructable. Some people creates copies of the same instructable in other language and other transalte each step of their instructables. It will be great, once you have entered an instructable in English, to add the same text and notes in other language. So when other person visit your instructable, he will be able to choose the languages. Also, someone that likes so much another author's instrutable could be able to translate it to other language...

Some feature suggestions for the site...

1) Add a short list of the last 5-10 most recent forum responses, possibly in the right column. Sort of a "what's hot" list. So you don't need to hit "view all" to get a quick snap-shot of activity.... 2) Add a "sticky" to the top of the FAQS section with a link to some of the "helper" projects, like Eric's "How to make a great Instructable," etc.

How about a "What We're Up To" forum/page?

. Y'all have been making a lot of changes lately and not informing the community about what's going on. If you had a forum or page (replies wouldn't really be necessary) that said "Here's what we're working on right now" you could include a note saying "don't worry about it, we're doing some tweaking" or "if you have problems, let us know." This would also help the regulars help the confused so they don't have to bother you.

Makezine feature notification?

Every so often. Well, more than "every so often", projects from this site are featured on the Makezine site. This is, without doubt, a good thing, but wouldn't it be nice if the authors of featured projects were informed, in the same way as they are informed when their project is featured on this site?

Reply button disapears on featured comments

When I feature a comment, the reply button disappears.  Un-checking the feature box and reloading the page returns the reply button. Using firefox 3.6.13 Ubuntu 10.04.

Easy Feature Suggestion - timezones

At the moment all the times on the site are in US times. As a bonus feature for pros it would be REALLY useful if we could set our timezone in our profile settings so that all the comments in the forums, on ibles and in answers were changed to our timezone. Please please please please?

Collections Feature Request

Please can we have... The ability to delete our own collections, especially the draft ones. The ability to flag collections for spam etc, as we do for Instructables and Forum topics. ... pretty please?

Regarding Featuring at various levels...

At the moment, a full feature for a project gets that project onto the front page as an "Editor's Pick", but all a feature at Category or Channel level earns an author is a small star on the project's thumbnail. What I think should happen is... I look at the front page, I see the most recent top-level featured projects (as now) I click on a Category, say, Food, I see all the top-level food projects, plus all the Category-level featured projects. I click on a Channel, say, Sandwiches, I see all the top-level, Category-level and the Channel-level sandwiches. That way, authors will be rewarded for their work with the increased traffic they deserve. The photo is irrelevant, I just don't like publishing topics with no image.  It's the Angel of the North, with Conker-X sitting on the toes.  I took it on the way home from the Newcastle Maker Faire.

Front Page Featured Comment

SFGate added a new widget to their front page - a Featured Comment box. Someone commented on one of my Instructables that they wished they could favorite the comments because they were so fun to read. It would be neat if there was a box on the front page with a single Featured Comment, or part of a comment. The folks who have the ability to Feature an Instructable could be given the ability to also Feature a comment. You really don't need many. I'd probably only keep the most recent 10 or so in the queue. You could use a simple JavaScript form to submit a comment to the queue. Tell the folks with permission to only put the best of the best in there. Even if it stuck on the same cool comment for a couple of days, that's ok. It would be maybe a minute or so to add a comment by cut and paste to the queue. If you each only do one a week it would be full constantly. It could lead folks to the Instructable, or even the Commenter. In the SFGate box it looks like they just choose the featured comment editorially. I'm not sure how often it changes. I think just whenever they decide to change it. I've never seen one persist for more than one day. It doesn't change with reloads; that's why I think it is chosen editorially.I love a lot of my comments.

Pro feature suggestion

I'm fairly sure somebody else has mentioned this, but I don't remember what the response was: It would be nice if there was an "logged in now" indicator, such as people's usernames being underlined, that was only visible to pro members. Or maybe there could be a page that simply lists all those logged in as you look. Just a thought.

Feature Request: Community editing

One of Quora's great features is the ability to "suggest edits." Instructables has many brilliant DIYers who are...well, TERRIBLE spellers, typists or grammarians. Then there are folks like me, who may lack technical brilliance, but know very well how to write, spell, edit, proofread, and organize. Allowing users to suggest edits, with a way for writers to quickly accept or reject them, would allow distributed collaboration that would make the site better and more useful for everyone.

Feature Request: @user tag

For me instructables is great because of it's outstanding community. Still, I believe this could be an even better place if we worked closer together.  Sure, this can't be forced, but it can be made easier: It would help greatly if a "@user" tag was introduced. It should do two things: Notify the user mentioned, both with an on-page notification (like a PM) as well as through email Produce a clickable link to the user's page The usage cases are plenty. It could be used if... an authors project is based on @user ideas/ project @user has improve upon one's work @user has similar project worth checking out a comment/ forum post is adressed to @user, even though it is not a direct response one knows @user is interested in a instructable/ forum post, but may have missed it Unlike PMs it's a quick and public method to reach out for people. I am very aware that even though this is a "small" idea it may take much effort to develop and integrate throughout the site. Yet I do believe it would be absolutely worth it, as it... motivates authors (it is the greatest feeling to know somebody values the project you've poured all of your heart into) keeps conversations going (I've seen many comments not being responded to just because they haven't used the reply button) brings people with similar ideas and interests together (isn't this what instructables is all about?) It could happen that this will be abused by some people, so "blocking" certain users (to not receive notifications) should be a mandatory function. What do you think about this?

IDEA - IRC integration in Instructables.com

I just had an amazing (i think) idea....Instructables should host an IRC channel.it would allow people to ask specific questions (often not necessary to archive) and chat without the necessary delay that a forum presents... the forum would still be the way to communicate with the group (whether they're online at the same time as you or not) but the IRC channel would allow for higher speed exchanges as well, thereby improving the ability to collaborate on projects, ask questions, and share insights. The IRC channel should be moderated, and public transcripts should be logged on the site in an openly accessible mannerThis allows others to benefit from previous topics breached in the channel, helps keep it clean, and provides a level of protection for children / young teens who use the site. The logs would be slightly behind the active chat (updated hourly) to discourage lurkers. The IRC channel's current viewers should be posted on the site, as well as an IRC protocol ink to the channel.that way, people can see what sort of activity is present on the server before joining.I believe Instructables has a lively enough membership to support such an endeavor, and that it would enrich the community, and bring us all much closer. I welcome anyone else's input on this idea, and hope the 'Ibles staff will take it under advisement.btw, I'd love a job... the bay area is much nicer than VT for the creatively minded

How Do You Know if Your Instructable Got Featured?

Front Page Feature Never Showed Up

I got an email stating that my latest instructable was featured on the front page, but I never saw it there. Did anyone else? I got the email around 5:30 am, does that mean it was featured for a bit in the early morning and then disappeared into the tech category? Is there a significant delay between the time something is chosen to be featured and the time it appears on the front page? Thanks! Xellers

"Feature Comment" Not Working

For over a month now, I can't feature a comment that someone posted on my Instructable, Am I the only one that has this problem? No, I've seen someone feature one of my comments before, Anything wrong with my computer? I am a PRO-member so it definitely has nothing to do with that... WHY?!?

Pro Suggestion: Points

Ok, so I thought this was a pretty good idea that could make people want to buy more Pro Memberships, and publish more Instructables. What if for getting different levels of featured, you could get points to trade in for different things. For example: Channel features could get 10 points, category features could get 25 points, and homepage features could get 50 points. Then, you could get points for being in the newsletter, and for getting featured on the flash box on the front page. You could trade the points in for more pro memberships, digital patches, stickers, or maybe if you saved up enough, a laser etched Leatherman. What do you think?

Feature request: "Sorting" choice in topics lists under Groups

It isn't obvious to me how the page-generator chooses the order in which forum topics are listed on a Group's main page. It would be Really Nice if the section bar include choices for the order in which topics are presented (by date posted, by date of last reply, by number of replies, by author, etc.).

Searching forums feature implementation

I just became a member of instructables after having searched these pages for fun projects and interesting ideas for over a year. I tried to search the forums as I have done with a fair good deal of other forums, but I could not specifically query the forum for topic searches. I looked top to bottom for a link or search box that would help me find answers in the forum, but nothing existed other than the default search bar at the top right hand corner of the page. If you could direct me to the correct location of the search tool for the forum that would help me immensely, or if the feature does not exist I suggest that it become part of the page when clicking on the "community" link. Muchas thank you N Stuff.

Translated Instructable - feature request

Overnight, my instructable count went up by one. Since I haven't posted anything new, I realised that this means that one of my instructables has been translated into another language for one of the non-English versions of Instructables. It wasn't immediately obvious, though, which instructable or which language.  Jayefuu pointed out the existence of a drop-down menu that had appeared, but that only takes me to the translated project, not to the the translated project on the other website. Please, can the links between the different language sites be made more explicit? For instance: A row of buttons across the bottom of the page to switch between language sites (even if they just take you to that site's front page) An option to include other language sites in searches An email from HQ when an instructable is translated, with a link to the translation on the other language site.

Instructables for Developers - Request!!!

Hi there! I am here to request for a feature of instructables. I am instructabler since 2010 here. I want a support for developers like me such as API's and other stuff. One of my idea is to make an copy-paste code for displaying instructbles profile and other buttons just like for facebook they support developers. If you familiar with "Facebook for Developers" that would be nice! So in equivalent I hope someday this website will support the developers around the world and will called as "Instructables for Developers" this is awesome! If is it possible please let me know any opinions are welcome because this is only an idea for improvements of instructables. Thanks! Wareneutron

4 New Pro Features - UPDATED - 1, 2 & 3 now complete!

As some of you may have seen, recently I've been playing with Perl to manipulate Instructables and gather data from profiles. More recently I developed these 3 perl scripts for use by the pro community. Since they proved fairly popular we thought we'd move them to the public forums so you can see what we've been up to. (By we I mean pro members, not staff, I'm not staff) I thought of 3 new potential features I could develop, this time only available to pros. The fourth you can read about below, it's more of a teaser for something Lithium_Rain and I are working on. 1) Download all own instructables: Backs up ALL of your instructables to your hard drive as pdfs. 2) Download all favourite instructables: Downloads all your favourite instructables! 3) Download all X's instructables: Big fan of Kiteman? Or Ewilhelm? Or Canida? Or even Jayefuu? *gasp**shock**horror*. Going away for a week? No problem. Download all of one person's instructables as pdfs in one easy step and be set for quality reading for the duration of your trip! 4) This is more of a teaser for a work in progress. It should be out in the next month if Lithium_Rain and I aren't too busy. It's more of a server run application that uses ibles to gather interesting data. More on this in a few weeks maybe. Using the Perl scripts  yourself: (you need to be a pro member) 1) Download Perl from www.cpan.org 2) Install Perl 3) Download WWW::Mechanize from www.cpan.org. This will let the script access instructables. It's used to fetch web pages. 4) Install Mechanize by extracting it into your Perl directory (or just follow the instructions included with it) 5) Download download_instructables_pdfs.pl or download_instructables_favourite_pdfs.pl from this forum thread and change the extension from .txt to .pl 6) Edit download_instructables_pdfs.pl. You will need to update your instructables account name and password so it can log in. The variable $target is the name of the instructabler you want to download the instructables of. Those are the only 3 things you need to change. If you like you can also edit the pdf properties to include comments, larger pictures and other things. Depending on the amount of ibles you're doing, it may take longer. It takes about 3 minutes to download my 17 ibles. Can't be bothered to install Perl but still want a copy of your instructables?: 1) Subscribe to me (for the effort it takes me to run the script) 2) PM me your email address and whether you want your instructables or your favourite instructables or both! 3) I'll run it for you and email you a zipped file containing your instructables. OR - wait a few weeks and Lithium_Rain and I might have a web interface ready. People who've had their ibles sent: Zieak, Goodhart, Kiteman, Jayefuu

Feaure Request - moving images

When dealing with images, I cannot do the "drag to reorder" stuff on a touch-sensitive device, such as my phone or tablet*. Since the vast majority of my time online is via one of these two devices, not being able to click & drag images around is a major PITA, having to start up the desk top computer just to move a thumbnail a few pixels... Bearing in mind that most UK internet browsing is done via touch-sensitive devices, and the UK is this site's second-biggest user-base, it would seem sensible to address this issue. *both running Android

Featuring Guidelines

Having your Instructable featured means you are an excellent author, and you're providing some of the best content on the site. We want everyone to see what you've made! When we feature your Instructable, it's our way of saying "You are awesome, and we love you!"So what does it take to get your Instructable featured? Read on, my friend, you have come to the right place! You can also check out this handy Instructable that will walk you through posting a Feature-Worthy Instructable. There are currently two tiers of featuring we use to promote great content and reward our awesome authors: Feature: Your Instructable will appear in the Featured Feed, and you'll receive a free pro membership which can be applied to your own account or given as a gift to another member! Homepage Feature: Your Instructable will appear in the Featured Feed, as well as on the homepage, and you'll receive a free pro membership which can be applied to your own account or given as a gift to another member. For an Instructable to be featured, the main criteria we look for are excellent documentation and reproducibility. These break down into the following points: The title fits and explains the project. The introduction should state what the project is, and the reason or motivation behind it. All photos should be original, bright, clear, and in-focus. Projects should be broken into enough steps to be easy to follow, with sufficient photos and explanatory text to allow the reader to understand the process. Grammar and spelling should be good enough so as to not be distracting. Projects should be complete and contain all the information needed so others could reasonably duplicate the project (if the reader were to have the necessary skills and access to similar tools and materials.) Lists should be included of parts/materials/ingredients/tools used, with links to sources as needed, as well as links to references. Whenever possible, the inclusion of downloadable files, PDF patterns, and so forth is desirable. Video content (youtube videos, etc.) must be accompanied by photos and written step-by-step instructions, as outlined in the points above. For a Homepage Feature, here are some additional things we look for: Overall stellar documentation Beautiful cover images Content that is highly reproducible and has that “wow, awesome!” factor Note that high levels of ingenuity, creativity, innovation, and/or utility in a project will often compensate for various areas of weaknesses in documentation, so these criteria should be viewed as guidelines and not necessarily hard-fast rules. What about business-related content from bloggers, etsy-ers, youtubers, kickstarters, and so forth? Can that type of content be featured? Absolutely! Any Instructable that meets the criteria as outlined above and contains real how-to instructional content can be featured. If you are in this camp, it's an excellent practice to keep your ulterior motives relatively subtle. For example, some of our best authors are also bloggers and etsy-ers, and many of these authors simply include a single link to their site or store in the last step of their Instructables. This is a perfect approach that allows their projects to get as much attention as possible on the site, but also plug their commercial interests in a way that is not overbearing or spammy. Being overbearing or spammy is the quickest way to NOT being featured. Want your project featured? Sometimes it's hard to see where your project could use some enhancements! Luckily, we have some great authors that will review your project and give you feedback at the volunteer-run Clinic. Do you get featured a lot? Why not spend a little time in the Clinic and help others get to your level! :)

Can we have a tag blacklist feature?

I haven't searched too much, so maybe this feature already exists, but I think it would be useful if you could blacklist certain tags so they don't appear when you search for a craft. This site is filled with K'Nex. I don't own K'Nex. I don't want K'Nex. I don't even want to know K'Nex exists. They look very ugly and impractical in my opinion. I know some people enjoy them, but I'd rather not see a billion K'Nex results when I search for -realistic- props for Halloween or whatever. This doesn't only apply to K'Nex, but that's my personal example right now. I think a blacklist feature for tags would solve this problem. Anyone agree?

Suggested feature: selectable images of tools, materials

I often find myself making little Photoshop collages of tools when I'm working on an 'ible, just so there's something to look at on the less-than-riveting steps where I'm listing what tools and materials were used. And I see that lots of other folks find themselves doing the same thing. And let's be honest: we're all kind of phoning that part in, aren't we? What if we had the option to jump to a screen with tons of selectable tools, do a little clickety-click, and go back to our 'ible to find all of the items we selected displayed in a visually economical and aesthetically pleasing manner? Stylized icons, photos, or even sponsored images from advertisers linked to their shopping page? It would help the folks struggling with their graphics software, and help the folks who aren't struggling but would still rather dive right in to the "how-to" part, which is why we're really here. The possibilities are endless for the GUI, ranging from simple checkboxes, to drag-and-drop images, to a complete overkill of awesomeness where you click an object and an animated Instructables Robot walks over and grabs it and drops it onto your virtual work bench... Anyway, that's the idea. What do you think, folks? Mike Craghead https://www.instructables.com/member/mcraghead/

New Interactive Collaboration Page & UI (Instructabook - social ible)

Bricobart has proposed a collaboration contest, read more: here. I guess it would be great to introduce the less-noticed collaboration feature of instructables.  Problem: I think one of the main reasons why the collaboration feature is ignored is because it's difficult to use. Difficult in a way that two or more ible members are having a hard time exchanging ideas through email. Emails are are slow and bulky compared to social networking. Also one of the problem with collabs is that the people who contributed to the write-up doesn't show-up on the credits. My Experience: My former classmate and I had the same problem. We both did the same thing, e-mailing. It also took us hours to finish a write-up. Months after my first collab another friend of mine encouraged me to do another collab, this time with the help of Facebook. The chat and group feature of FB blended perfectly with instructable's collab feature. Proposal: I think that it would be good to have a new social collaboration feature in ibles without using Facebook as a seperate medium for planning and for discussing ideas. ____________________________________________ Concept: The concept includes a designated page for social ible collaboration. The page has six main parts, the six main parts are the following. 1st.) Proposal Page: Imagine this as the forum page, it's divided into all the possible channel categories. People can post ideas of their dream project (like starting a new thread in forums).  2nd.) Find Partners: The project proposal threads are now being viewed by fellow ible members (members willing to discuss and build the project). The project proposal thread should have a "COUNT ME IN" button. Those who wants to join the project should press the "COUNT ME IN" button. 3rd.) Discussion Page: Now that you have found fellow ible members who are willing to build the proposed project, it's now time to close the thread. The thread's status is switched to "In Progress", the "COUNT ME IN" button is now greyed-out. During the discussion, collab members are redirected to a new page, the private discussion page. This page should look like a private group of Facebook. In this page, you can share photos, videos, ideas with one another. You can post on the group's wall and comment on the posts. Notifications shall be sent automatically to the "you page" once a member posts something on the group page. We need to know if everyone is ready to build the project. Once everyone has checked the "I'm Ready" check box, the project advances to the next step. *The discussion page can be accessed by fellow collab members anytime.  4th.) Write-up/ Editing Stage: This is where the traditional instructable text-editor comes in. This time with the presence of a  live chatbox, similar to FB. The chat box should also have a "upload/ attach an image" feature.  5th.) Add Contest: bricobart's idea comes in here. Collab members can join regular and special contests (collab contests). 6th.) Publish: The collab members can now publish the guide! Credits should be given to the collab members. Ex. Designer:_____, Builder:_____ , Programmer:_____, etc..... ______________________________________ I hope this helps. If the idea is too blurry, just tell me. I'll make a HTML-PHP dummy page of how it looks like.

What happens if you enable another promo code

Right now I have a 3 month pro membership, but I got another 1 year pro membership for being a finalist in the epilog contest.  What happens if I enable the 1 year membership.  Will it just add on, or will is "erase" the 3 months, and just be a year?  I am pretty sure that it will just tack on, but I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't a bug.  Thanks in Advance! AI (soon to be TTR)

First Instructable Featured

I'm not sure it is intentional, but I feel that the Instructables crew does a great job of featuring members' first instructables (given they meet a certain standard). My first Ible was featured and it's a great boost knowing that they really do pay attention. Keep up the great community and hard work, guys!!! -BG

Give Away "won" Membership Passes?

So I keep getting free memberships thanks to the guides I'm writing. Heres the problem.  I think I have like 8 years built up at this point.  I was wondering if I could "gift" one of the free memberships I received today to a student in my class?  I've got a code for a 1 year membership and a 3 month membership for the most recent guide I wrote, and I've not redeemed either of them. Just trying to spread the love to a middle school student in oder to encourage him to use the site. Thanks! Joshua

Featured ....... Then not featured

Hello, I submitted an instructable today and I was happy to see it be "Featured" but then I checked it out about an hour later then just to find out that the "featured" icon is gone and my instructable isn't featured anymore. What gives? https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Spanker/

Featured Percentage

Does the Featured Percentage include the No. of Featured Instructables+No. of Featured Collections? I have 11 Published Instructables. 9 out of 11 have been featured. I also have 2 collections; both of which have been featured. But the Featured percentage on profile is only 69% when it should be 80+%. Is this is a bug or are my calculations incorrect?
