"Feature Comment" Not Working

For over a month now, I can't feature a comment that someone posted on my Instructable, Am I the only one that has this problem? No, I've seen someone feature one of my comments before, Anything wrong with my computer? I am a PRO-member so it definitely has nothing to do with that... WHY?!?

Front Page Featured Comment

SFGate added a new widget to their front page - a Featured Comment box. Someone commented on one of my Instructables that they wished they could favorite the comments because they were so fun to read. It would be neat if there was a box on the front page with a single Featured Comment, or part of a comment. The folks who have the ability to Feature an Instructable could be given the ability to also Feature a comment. You really don't need many. I'd probably only keep the most recent 10 or so in the queue. You could use a simple JavaScript form to submit a comment to the queue. Tell the folks with permission to only put the best of the best in there. Even if it stuck on the same cool comment for a couple of days, that's ok. It would be maybe a minute or so to add a comment by cut and paste to the queue. If you each only do one a week it would be full constantly. It could lead folks to the Instructable, or even the Commenter. In the SFGate box it looks like they just choose the featured comment editorially. I'm not sure how often it changes. I think just whenever they decide to change it. I've never seen one persist for more than one day. It doesn't change with reloads; that's why I think it is chosen editorially.I love a lot of my comments.

"Feature comment" on slideshow is broken?

I tried to use the new "feature comment" checkbox out of curiosity on Jake's comment here, which popped up a yellow error box saying 400 -- QUESTION objects are not sticky-able By the sounds of it this feature is a few hours old so I guess the kinks are still being worked out.  Is there some documentation on what the feature actually does?  I gather it pins a comment to the top of the list of comments and disables replies to that comment...?

Comment deleting? Answered

Comment Tracker

When I check my homepage, I notice that by putting my mouse over the "Youv" I get a small menu of options. One of the options is "Comments." When I have new comments, it will say "Comments (x)." I really like this feature, I find it useful, but I am having a problem where it will say "Comments (2)," but I have only one new message. This is not a very urgent bug, nor am I sure it is even a bug, but it would be much appreciated if it could be fixed or amended in the near future. Thanks.

Feature Request: Access to URLs of individual comments

There are many occasions where I want to cross-reference somebody's comment in another posting. Most of the time, I try to use the "date and time" stamp, but that's problematic since the time is computed on the fly in my local TZ. It's worse if the comment is embedded half a dozen layers down in some thread in a completely different Forum Topic. Once or twice, I've tried to use "View Source" in my browser, and search through to find the corresponding markup for the comment, and then extract the hash from one of the tag/JS attributes. Since the information is already there, would it be difficult to add a "link" hyperlink to each comments, such that the returned URL was the one needed to get back to that comment in the future?

Feature Request

Lovin' the site, but would like to see one small feature. Could we add an RSS feed to the comments page under the You link? I'd like to keep track of what, if anything, people are saying about what I'm saying. It would make it much easier to do if we could get an rss feed for that page. Thanks!

When I favorite something, it would be very nice if I couls store some notes as to what I like about it. Very often I get inspired by an i/ble, notice an idea in it I can use, or simply want to save it for future reference. It would be nice if I can store on a notes field why I saved it.

Word formatting on comments

I have been away from Instructables for some time, and I came back, not much has changed after the pro feature was implanted. Which is good. ^^ However, I have a little problem with word formatting, when I tried using some symbols to change the way the words look, they don't work. Is this due to the pro feature? Or am I using the wrong symbles and my memory needs a little refreshing? Thanks! I just chose this picture randomly, I don't know what else to use. :P

Ratio of views to comments...

Over some time I've noticed that the ratio of instructables pageviews to commenters has increased on the side of pageviews, both with new and pre-existing instructables. The featuring of instructables in categories and channels has definitely increased pageviews overall but with less commenters. It could be that there are more visitors overall but that more are non-members, or that the community has extended a bit.  Though this isn't unusual on the internet, most places have a ratio of views to comments of less than 1%... Just something I've noticed on my own and few other instructables, not much more than a thought...

Fewer/no comments on Instructables?

Have other Instructable authors noticed a decline in comments for their Instructables with the most recent version of the site? I realize this sounds arrogant, but the past two of my Instuctables currently have more than 3,000 views and 50+ likes, but zero comments. One of the things I really like about Instructables is the opportunity for feedback and discussion. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this experience. If so, I wonder if it is a product of our society or the design of the site. At least when I view my own Instructables, there is a considerable amount of scrolling involved before you arrive at the comments section, which could be just enough to prevent comment inspiration. Or perhaps my recent Instructables are just not inspiring comments.  https://www.instructables.com/id/Custom-Disney-World-bag-featuring-Glow-With-The-Sh/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Giant-Toy-Tank-DJ-Booth/

Not a bug, but a feature request

In the forum sections we can see who made the last comment and I find this info very helpful. In the Answers sections however we only see the number of replies given so far. A lot of us like to help out by providing more or less usefull answers and it would be great to see who provided the last. This way it is easy to see if the person asking for help actually came back and replied him/herself. As an alternative it would be almost as good to see a tick, point or "replied" info once the person asking replied again. Would of course also help during springclean to remove tons of questions that never got solved.... Not to mention user from the database ;)

2x Feature request: Concerning the Slideshow feature

Two things about slideshows that I think could use some improvement. 1. When I put my mouse cursor over one of those tagged areas (yellow rectangle outlines), I'm probably doing that so that I can read the comment that shows up. It would make sense to automatically pause the slideshow until I pull the cursor out of the rectangle, so that it doesn't switch pictures while I'm reading. 2. I'm not sure about this, but it appears to me that the slideshow first decides that it's time for the next picture, and then loads it. This means that on a slow connection, the time it takes to load the picture can significantly shorten the time that you get to see the picture. Then, after an all too short viewing period, the picture goes away, and the slideshow shows only a big white area while loading the next pic. It would make sense to try and switch pictures every T seconds, and load all pics as quickly as possible. If the next pic is not availible yet, don't hide the current one just yet. =) /Gibson

Should be possible to edit comments

We should be able to edit comments that we have published. I found an error in a schematic I posted, for instance, and I should be able to go back and revise it instead of deleting the whole comment and re-posting. This is a common feature in other forum software.

Comment HTML formatting, etc.

Re: this thread , I hate to have to say this but I don't think it's the best idea to make a big thing ofd the ability to use arbitrary HTML in comments.  Yes, it's great to be able to go  G o o g l e all over the place, but the lack of source editor for non-pro members actually cripples the editor, including the ability to save the text of a comment with formatting/links etc. and post it later (or just keep it in case the editor screws up and deletes your comment, like it just did to me).  While the point of the pro value-added features is to make people want to go pro and "non-essential but cool" features are probably the best way of doing that without creating resentment, I still suspect the anti-pro regiment like ReCreate etc. don't need another reason to accuse pro members of lording it over the great unwashed.

Feature Request: @user tag

For me instructables is great because of it's outstanding community. Still, I believe this could be an even better place if we worked closer together.  Sure, this can't be forced, but it can be made easier: It would help greatly if a "@user" tag was introduced. It should do two things: Notify the user mentioned, both with an on-page notification (like a PM) as well as through email Produce a clickable link to the user's page The usage cases are plenty. It could be used if... an authors project is based on @user ideas/ project @user has improve upon one's work @user has similar project worth checking out a comment/ forum post is adressed to @user, even though it is not a direct response one knows @user is interested in a instructable/ forum post, but may have missed it Unlike PMs it's a quick and public method to reach out for people. I am very aware that even though this is a "small" idea it may take much effort to develop and integrate throughout the site. Yet I do believe it would be absolutely worth it, as it... motivates authors (it is the greatest feeling to know somebody values the project you've poured all of your heart into) keeps conversations going (I've seen many comments not being responded to just because they haven't used the reply button) brings people with similar ideas and interests together (isn't this what instructables is all about?) It could happen that this will be abused by some people, so "blocking" certain users (to not receive notifications) should be a mandatory function. What do you think about this?

New interface for comments editor

Last night, Rachel rolled out a new version of the comments editor.  It's supposed to be faster and easier to use (no more pull-down formatting for paid users, for example, just buttons). One nice new feature is that you don't have to wait for all the buttons to load if you're just typing plain text.  The back end is still the same HTML-based CKEditor as before.

Feature Suggestion, Topic closing

After getting a comment on a very old topic and noticing some come up it occurred to me that giving users the capacity to close their old topics or possibly leave it at the discretion of a time limit or a team of, well not quite executioners but something or other may be rather useful, mainly to stop old topics coming back up without reason, some stay active for a very long time, others just occasionally pop up. If the topics were merely closed but still existent then they'd still be available for reference and any specific comments about something could be sent to the user in question's orangeboard, it's just a thought, I'm not saying all old topics need taken out back and, eh sent to the farm but it might keep the forums a bit fresher, without causing confusion...

Subtle non-bug with new "(author)" comment identifier

As I've noted in a separate thread, there's a new feature in comments -- any comment by the original author of the Topic, I'ble, Answer, whatever, is identified with "(author)" next to their name, and now with a blue background on the full comment text. There's a subtle bug involved with this. When the original author first creates a comment, either at the top level or by replying to someone in a thread, their comment shows up without the annotation. It is only after reloading the page that the "(author)" and blue background appear. UPDATE 3 Feb 2009: As Lebowski has noted below, this is not actually a bug, and definitely isn't important to "fix" :-)

Some Featured Instructables are not worthy of Featuring

Instructables is great. I frequently view Featured entries. However, I have reviewed the criteria in a number of staff posts regarding what gets a members Instructable featured, I think the idea is good but the implementation is flawed. Some of the featured Instructables might meet those criteria but the Instructable itself may not be worthy, one recently had to be removed by staff for plagiarism after it was featured! The breech of Instructables Guidlines was clearly indicated in comments prior to the featuring. Instructables, please remember that just because an Instructable gets lots of views or comments, these may be for all the wrong reasons and each Featured Instructable and its comments should be reviewed before featuring. Thanks, and I really do think Instructables makes the world a better place :-)

In Add Comment bockWhat is the meaning of " FEATURE COMMENT FLAG"and What Author has to do on that comment? Answered

On some project reader writes some comment and at the bottom there is a remark" FEATURE COMMENT FLAG" and then small block "REPLY" in Red color What Author has to do , What is the meaning of that

Question by nachiketa 7 years ago  |  last reply 7 years ago

Feature Question: How do you create an unreplyable comment?

So, how does one create a comment which cannot be replied? I've seen one example, posted this morning, and it rather surprised me. I know that there is a work around if the comment itself is in reply to something I've written, but I'm still curious if it is a "user-accessible feature." UPDATE: I have learned from Staff that this is a feature of all "sticky comments." Announcements of bug fixes are often flagged as sticky, so they stay at the top of the original bug report. Also, the new "Best Answer" flag will make the associated comment sticky, for the same reason.

Feature request: mass-mail to subscribers

I have just realised how many people have subscribed to me (over 370!). Since they have taken a special interest in me, I feel I ought to be able to reward them somehow. I would like to be able to send a message to all my subscribers at once, giving them advance notice of ibles etc, to let them get first chance to comment or suggest improvements before I publish it to the general public. Update: the majority of replies seem to be in favour or neutral. (For instance, I currently have two projects awaiting publication that are complete enough for useful comments to be made, but not complete enough to publish properly.) Would you have liked the chance to comment on a project a few hours before everybody else? Or to be able to contribute to it before it is published? Or maybe you want to publish a project that is unavailable to the wider public because it does not meet the site's usual family-friendly standards? Or am I giving the concept of subscribers more significance than I ought?

Feature request : "I did it".

-When you post an instructables, it would be cool to know that people used your instruction to do it -Some people made "instructables" to show what they did after reading an instructable (the "Waseome led cube", as an example, led to two other instructibles from people who don't tell you how to do it, but jsut wanted to show what they managed to do) So : I'd like to see a "I build it" feature, which whoud allow registered users to add one page on an instructables, with at least one picture, some optional text, and comments. They would not appear in the "steps" list, but in a separate "They build it" list, but from a functionnal point of view, they would be exactly as a step owned by someone else. Actually, it would be possible for the owner of the instructable to put every builders as contributors, but this would requier an action from the owner, and I think it would allow every builder to modify the instructable, which is not wanted. HTH :) tReg.

Standards for being featured dropped?

This is anecdotal, since obviously I don't review every single featured Instructable. I just happened to notice two recently that have some nice photos but otherwise seem kind of "incomplete". Absolutely no offense meant to the authors, I'm sure they put a lot of effort into these projects, but the documentation seems lacking and not up to the standards of "someone should be able to reproduce the work": https://www.instructables.com/id/Colorful-LED-Christmas-tree-automaticlly-flashing/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Functional-Nintendo-Controller-Coffee-Table/ The latter especially has nice photos of what is obviously a really nice build, but totally lacks a materials list, wiring diagram, cut instructions for the wood - all information that's essential to actually do the build. There are a couple (nice) comments pointing this out. Just wanted to point this out - not sure if there's someone new on the community team who might be featuring things just because they have nice photos, without checking the text, or if there's been a change in the standards for featuring that I'm unaware of.
