A new feature: Membership Challenge for the Members, by the Members

It could be another Go Pro incentive, but have a space where members can challenge others to make a particular item by a given date, then let the membership vote on the winner. Similar to what is done now with contests except it's hardly any work for you guys and increases the number of ideas pertinent to then members themselves.

Main Featured Nav Broken Link (Gardening links to wrong page)

There appears to be an incorrect URL for the "Gardening" section of the top 33 featured channels. Windows 10, Chrome 49.0.2 (problem also occurs in Firefox and seems to be browser-independent) Steps to Reproduce: 1) Visit Instructables.com 2) Click "Explore" (next to the search box) 3) Click "featured" 4) Hover over "everything" 5) From "Top Channels" click "Gardening" (see "navigation" screenshot: http://imgur.com/nMcSTMV) Clicking the link will result in reaching this page: https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-workshop/channel-gardening/ However, that gardening page only has 3 entries and is listed under the "Workshop" category. It seems to be the incorrect result given that the list of top 33 channels is based on the total number of entries in a channel, and the gardening channel under the "Home" category has approximately 5,900 entries as opposed to 3 :) Thus, the correct URL for the "Gardening" link in the Top 33 navigation should be: https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-home/channel-gardening/ The location where the link should be updated in the source is line 158 when viewing with the Chrome source viewer (see "source" screenshot: http://imgur.com/v1PMoNc)

Overly Featured Authors

I'm happy to see the ladies on the front page and their work is fantastic, but I'm on the site every day and it seems that 75% of the time I am seeing giannyl (published in March) and 25% of the time jessyratfink (published in May).  I haven't see the April dude on the front page once.  Did you have a "Sexy Bunny vs. Guy Who Dresses Very French" focus group? How exactly it this rotation determined and why does it rotate back to one person?  Is it based on views? Regardless, perhaps it could be changed up a bit to allow other authors some front page time? And just a quick aside on the 50s era wording "much more than a pretty face"...Will you please continue to reference how authors look in future features?  I would love to see "For a handsome dude, this guy sure knows a lot of math!" or  "This moderately attractive author has created some gorgeous pieces" or even "At least his soldering iron is hot."

Automatic save feature wasting a lot of time and energy

While I was writing a lengthy instructable my parts list step was somehow pasted to every other step erasing what I had previously written.  I had already saved my work before this so I thought I could just go back to my previous save.  Too bad my work was automatically saved.  This feature is terrible.  Please get rid of it, we all know how to use a save button. I suppose the actual bug was in my one step being copied over every other step wasting a ton of my time.

Someone explain the new badge feature?

I'm not sure where else to ask this question but I'm very curious. Lately, I've just noticed that "badges" have been appended to my profile when I comment. Like below: What are these? I have no idea what they are, but for some reason I want more of them. How did we acquire more badges? Thanks

Featured Author: Shazni

Hello! I recently had the joy of interviewing Shazni.  As a long time author she had a lot of interesting answers and I highly recommend reading the interview. But if you have any more questions that you would like Shazni to answer, here's the place to do it!  Seriously how could not want to know more about the person that won that many instructables t-shirts!

Car Mods

Has instructables ever considered featuring some of Mightycarmods videos/DIY's? They are getting more and more popular every day! If you haven't seen them, check out their youtube channel:  http://www.youtube.com/user/mightycarmods?feature=chclk It's entertaining and very helpful and has saved me money so far! What do you guys think?

Add feature : move step to another 'ible draft

I like the new interface, but I have a suggestion that could make it better. I often work on multiple projects at once, and sometimes I move pictures and pieces of the Instructables around. It would be really convenient if you could take a step and move it out of one Instructable and into another or spawn a new one.

Feature request: Answers attributions on our profile page

Can we get some kind of metric to show how many Answers we've given? I know I've been helping out a lot by responding to Answers I see in the @askinstructables Twitter feed, but it'd be nice to get some kind of credit for this. Something like "Johntron has answered 27385702375 questions -- he's a BIG help" on my profile page.

Your Project, posted elsewhere?

It's always nice when your work gets popular, and the latest example is Artist-in-Residence Tomdf having had his tentacle straw project featured on Hack-a-Day.  I found this out because I saw it on their twitter feed. Have you had your Instructables featured elsewhere?  How did you find out? (And are you following the Instructables feed?)

Add Image Notes feature broken

I am attempting to add image notes to a new instructable, but the "Add Image Notes" tool endlessly shows a spinning wheel and reports, "saving your note..."  I've tired on several different photos in several different instructables using the following browsers: Google Chrome 10.0.648.82 beta Safari Version 5.0.3 (6533.19.4) Under OS X.   Anyone else experiencing this annoying bug?

Editor's Picks Links not functioning in the Newsletter

You must have changed something because this always worked before. Starting with the Feb 11 emailed Newsletter and also evident in todays, the link for the initial Featured item works but all the ones below in "Editors Picks" do not function.    When mousing over the pictures, the link is displayed in Featured instructable, but not with the ones below. I am using the Microsoft Outlook to read emails. DGW

I was just wondering if you guys (by you guys I mean whoever feels like it) could review my instructable: www.instructables.com/id/Guides-to-Drawing-Wolves/  It's already published, But I would like to know if there is anything to add or edit to make it feature-worthy. Also, any advice you can give me to improve my future instructables would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Battle of the Bulbs!

Whilst looking through the recent -ibles i saw CYNICALifornia's variation to the light bulb lamp. Running, er, clicking as fast as I could, I got to the home page and saw that his -ible was featured as well, as I scanned the page I saw, parallel to his, My -ible! IT'S ON!!! not really, I just thought it was funny that they were both featured, almost the same -ible, and right next to each other..

Facial Robot Controll

Facial feature detection is an interesting addition to robotics. Much of human communication is done without verbs and nouns so a robot that can pick up on visual cues from the human face will probably be leagues ahead of it's peers. I imagine that using this feature it can pick up the disconect between words and facial expression to get a understanding of sarcasm. Turing test, here we come!Face Controlling Robots

view all steps now requires a membership?

I'm pretty disappointed that a once free feature is now something I have to pay to use. The view all steps feature was very nice and made reading instructables easy. I'm pretty much a lot less likely to use the site now because it is such a pain to click through each step and I can't just skim through an instructable anymore.

New site layout?!

Well, i got to work this morning, and went on to check ibles, and i get hit with a paper wallet, i just checked it, and ive found a new layout, and a 'customise' feature! Also, i am able to create a new topic inside of safari instead of having to use firefox! What does everyone think to it? Personally i love the customize feature, it lets me put in direct links to where i want to go. But i must say i miss the drop down box feature, especially on the 'submit' link And i preffered the old location of the links (in the orange band) - I never use the 'categories' It does seem to look a bit squashed up top, (as a graphic designer its a bit unpleasing) But overall, i like the new style!

Pro Features for free?

Hi! I have this nice little laptop supplied by my school that I use to go on Instructables a lot, and I noticed that even though I donot have a pro account, I can still use the Allsteps feature. My laptop is running Internet Explorer 8 on a windows 7 machine. I belive that Javascript is at least partly disabled, and I am acessing the internet through a websence proxy. Whenever I am logged into the Instructables, I can simply click on the allsteps button, and instead of asking me to upgrade, it will give me all the steps on one page. I have tried this on my home computer, and it asks me to upgrade, so I am considering this to be a bug.

Instructables ease of use pet peeves.

To start before I begin my suggestions I wan't to say that I do love Instructables.com and I believe it is a FANTASTIC website. Also, perhaps there is a way to do what I suggest but I just don't know about it which is what I need help with. Here are my concerns/complaints about the ease of use on Instructables.com: There is no obvious way to do searches for contests. Sometimes I want' to show someone a previous contest that happened a year ago, but the only option I have is to scroll through 6 pages of contests. I wish there was a way to search for contests the same way I search for Instructables.   Why is there a badge that someone won a competition, but no way to figure out what competition they won? Why can't I click on the badges and have a popup box leading me to the competition that Instructable entered in?   Same goes for the featured badge. Who featured it? and when?   God forbid I be able to search through the forums, no? where is the search feature for forums?   When I view a person's profile, specifically their Instructables, why can't I see what Instructables of theirs got featured like I do when I view my Instructables from the authors editors profile? Just small pet peeves that I have, anyway thank you for listening! :)

Best time to publish an Instructable

Call me vain, but it sure does feel good to receive a few thousand views for a newly published Instructable. So I got to thinking about which day of the week would result in the best exposure for a new Instructable. Being featured is important of course - without that little banner the Instructable will never reach the editors' picks section, the front page, or the newsletter. So assuming you can create an Instructable which will be featured, when's a good time to post it? I find that publishing an Instructable on Thursday or Friday morning-midday is a good idea - this gives the editors time to review and feature your Instructable before the weekend. If you're lucky enough to have your 'ible featured on the frontpage on Saturday, I think it pretty much sits there for the whole weekend since the editors are not in the office to approve new homepage 'ibles. Even if you don't make the front page, it'll stay at the top of the editors' picks section for awhile. Publishing from Friday afternoon to Sunday might be a bad idea since that's when a lot of people have the time to publish, so come Monday the front page is backed up with newly featured Instructables. Yes, I am a little obsessed preoccupied with this whole idea, but I don't think I'm insane, which means that someone else out there must be wondering the same thing. What do you think?

"add to this guide (paste urlString)"

Is this a new feature, where everyone can add stuff to a guide, or is it a bug? It appears above the Author box in Guides

Simple site idea.

So I had an interesting site Idea while looking at my own persona (vanity) and though it would be great if we could choose our best instructables to feature on our own persona page. Along with that we could also have a coming soon box sort of thing as an option, that has a thumbnail and a little text so we can leave teasers about our next projects...

Banner ads showing in Pro upon link from email

When I click a featured article on the newsletter I am immediately logged in and I get the ads EVERYWHERE. I don't get them if I close the tab in my browser (Safari 9.1) and then open instructables from my tool bar, but then I can't find the featured 'ible I was looking for in the first place. Help?

Appreciate Nice Feature -- unpublished "Favorite" stays in place!

Yesterday I flagged a fellow member's unpublished I'ble as a "Favorite" (so I could give some feedback and copyediting). It was published today, and I thought I'd have to go and reflag the published version since the URL would be different. Not at all! It was still right there in my Favorites list, and the URL had automatically updated itself to the published version (the title with underscores) instead of the internal hash ID.

Request for feature- Photos in PM's

I think it would be really nice if You could send images to other people via PM. This would be useful if you want to show a project to one or 2 people, and dont want others to see until its posted. There has been many a time where a lot didnt get done for us because we couldnt PM images. Also, looking in the community blog forum, it would really many people.

An "I did this!" button

Hey I was just wondering about an "I did this" button. You could click it on the instructables you actually went and did.  Then you could look back and see all the instructables you have done. I feel it would encourage you to do some instructables. Perhaps people could see who has done an instructable and ask them for help.  If you've ever been on the site 43 things they have this feature.

Instructables API-like features?

I'm working on a small little project, and I was wondering if there's some easy way for me to get things like views/rating/#ofcomments for an instructable easily. I've been using RSS feeds for now, but it doesn't have that data on the ible. I was thinking of using an XSLT on the page, but it isn't valid enough XML to work (not your fault at all, the javascript is throwing it off) So, is there some simple way that I'm overlooking to get views?

Instructables update

Monday night we did a major upgrade to Instructables. The bulk of the changes were under the hood making the site faster and making it easier for us to build cool new features. I'm sure you've noticed that Instructables now have categories, but also check out the fun ways to combine categories, the new sorting and organizing features of your library, and the increased control over commenting (ability to delete, or remove and leave a stub, if there are responses). If you find a problem or want something new, please submit a bug.Have fun!
