Feature Request: Improvements to user's "Subscriptions" interface

I was looking at the Subscriptions interface in my profile, and there are a few things that could be better. 1) Just as you made the nice iconic display of who is subscribed to me, perhaps the list of my subscriptions could be done the same way? At a minimum, showing the avatar plus username would be nice.2) Could the three different tabs (I'bles, Comments, Topics) include sorting options? Right now, for example, the forum topics are sorted from oldest first to most recent at the end.3) Does your search engine support complex filters? It'd be nice to have the same kind of search bar on the Subscriptions screen (as you've added to the Forums pages), except that a hidden field in the forn would limit the search to just whom I'm subscribed.-- Michael Kelsey

Arduino alarm with LDR and RFID disable feature?

Hello. I understand that this sounds like an unbelievably simple idea, and so I thought it would be. I have successfully written this first code, that detects an RFID tag and sounds a beep, but I am struggling with getting the second to work. Any ideas? First Code -- this one WORKS! Code: /*------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a sample code for RDM630 RFID reader by Spekel(Spekel.se) This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ -------------------------------------------------------------------*/ #include #define rxPin 2 #define txPin 3 #define SPKR 7 char code[20]; int val = 0; int bytesread = 0; //------------------------------------ //create a Serial object RFID SoftwareSerial RFID= SoftwareSerial(rxPin, txPin); void setup() {   Serial.begin(9600);   Serial.println("Serial Port Activated");   RFID.begin(9600);   Serial.println("RFID Reader Activated");   Serial.println("Scanning...");   pinMode(rxPin, INPUT);   pinMode(txPin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(SPKR, OUTPUT); } void loop() {   val = 0;   bytesread = 0;   while(bytesread < 12)   {     // read 12 digit code     val = RFID.read();     if(val == 3)     { // if header or stop bytes before the 10 digit reading       break; // stop reading     }     if(val != 2)     {       code[bytesread] = val; // add the digit       bytesread++; // ready to read next digit       code[bytesread] = '\0'; // add the NULL     }   }   if(bytesread >= 12)   { // if 12 digit read is complete     Serial.print("RFID Detected - Tag: [");     for(int i=0; code[i]!='\0' ; i++)     {       Serial.print(code[i]);     }     Serial.println("]"); //print the whole 13 bytes     for (int i=0; i<200; i++) {  // generate a 1KHz tone for 1/2 second   digitalWrite(SPKR, HIGH);   delayMicroseconds(300);   digitalWrite(SPKR, LOW);   delayMicroseconds(300);   }     Serial.println("Scanning...");   } } --- You didn't even need that but I assume you understand the setup now --- The second code is exactly the same, apart from it contains and LDR that decides whether or not the value it receives has changed enough to sound the alarm and does so, allowing the alarm to be deactivated by an RFID. This does NOT check to see if the RFID tag is the correct one, that is to be written in later. At the moment I get a constant beeping whether or not the RFID tag is used to dissarm, or there is no beep at all. Any ideas?? ^^ Please actually read this before answering my Question!! Code: #include #define SPKR 7 #define rxPin 2 #define txPin 3 char code[20]; int val = 0; int bytesread = 0; int lightPin = 1; int variable = 0; int secondVariable = 0; int differenceVariable = 0; int ledPin = 13; SoftwareSerial RFID= SoftwareSerial(rxPin, txPin); // --- Initiation Complete --- void setup() {   Serial.begin(9600);   RFID.begin(9600);   pinMode(rxPin, INPUT);   pinMode(txPin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(SPKR, OUTPUT);   variable = analogRead(lightPin); } // --- Setup Complete --- void loop() {   variable = analogRead(lightPin);   Serial.println(variable);   delay(50);   secondVariable = analogRead(lightPin);   differenceVariable = variable - secondVariable;   if ((differenceVariable^2) > 200) {           val = 0;       bytesread = 0;       while(bytesread < 12) { // read 12 digit code           val = RFID.read();           if(val == 3) { // if header or stop bytes before the 10 digit reading               break; // stop reading           }           if(val != 2) {               code[bytesread] = val; // add the digit               bytesread++; // ready to read next digit               code[bytesread] = '\0'; // add the NULL           }           for (int i=0; i<200; i++) {  // generate a 1KHz tone for 1/2 second               digitalWrite(SPKR, HIGH);               delayMicroseconds(300);               digitalWrite(SPKR, LOW);               delayMicroseconds(300);           }         }       if(bytesread >= 12) { // if 12 digit read is complete           Serial.print("RFID Detected - Tag: [");           for(int i=0; code[i]!='\0' ; i++) {               Serial.print(code[i]);           }           Serial.println("]"); //print the whole 13 bytes           for (int i=0; i<200; i++) {  // generate a 1KHz tone for 1/2 second               digitalWrite(SPKR, HIGH);               delayMicroseconds(300);               digitalWrite(SPKR, LOW);               delayMicroseconds(300);           }           Serial.println("Scanning...");       }    } } Thank you very much for any help that you can give, AMouse197 (I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum so have moved it)

Questions about K'nex gun features. Answered

Hey, I'm Stale56 (as most of you may know), and I'm building a K'nex gun right now. I have several questions about some features on K'nex guns. 1. What type of barrel will get further range, a TDS style barrel (where it is layered), or the type on Foresthell12's K'nex pistol V2 (snowflake with grey/red rods connected)? 2. Is a firing pin that comes out of the barrel better than one that doesn't stick out of the end of it? WHAT I MEAN: Let's say a gun with a tube barrel has a body that is the length of a red rod, and a firing pin that is a black rod. When the pin is not cocked back, and not ready to fire, the firing pin is sticking out the front end of the barrel. Think of all those "Smallest True Trigger" guns. They have a small firing pin that is a white rod, blue rod, etc. Now imagine if you made the firing pin a yellow rod. You can imagine that the firing pin will stick out of the front end of the barrel. And that is what I mean in my question. 3. Does firing pin size matter that much? EXAMPLE: If you have a yellow rod firing pin that isn't pulled back that far, and a black rod that is pulled back the same distance as the red rod, which will have better range? I'm assuming the black, but I might be wrong. 4. What is the best type of bullet lock? 5. I know that black rods are stronger than grey, but if you have a grey rod for the firing pin, and replace it with a black one, will it go further? If so, will it be alot further, or only 2 inches further Thats it for now, I may add some more questions later. Thank you for you time.

How do you get your instructable featured? Answered

Asked by thatshortkid17 9 years ago | last reply 9 years ago

List of "featured" on front page slightly different from those on Featured page.

It's a minor thing that may have to do with caching but I noticed that the list of features on the front page is missing an instructable that is shown on the "Show all Featured" page. See the following screen shots of the front page and the Featured page. The "USB Dog Identification" is not on the front page. This happened using Firefox and Chrome on Windows XP.

What is the best youth calibur revolver that has low cost? 500>? Answered

What is the best youth calibur revolver, (So basically lower than .357, I dont care about power much, as long as it can kill a squirrel or rabit, cleanly, and it has little recoil.) and is mainly less than 500 dollars. I've been looking at the .22 (Ruger?) Single Six, (Thats the actuall name, look it up.) revolver. Also, was anyone else but me REALLY friggen suprised there is a .17 calibur? I might loose that under a microsope... my gad, that must be reeeeaaaaaaaallllllllyy small. Like the the size of this "O" in quotes... wow...

My instructable got featured and I even got a mail stating that, but I noticed that it did not show up in the home page. All my other featured instructable did show up on the home page. Is this a bug or is there some other reason to it. Link to Ible

I've been featured but no 3 month pro membership. Answered

One of my instructables (when I look on my profile) has the featured ribbon. I saw a pro fourm topic about being featured and getting a free 3 month pro membership. I'm not being greedy but would more like to understand how it has to featured to get this. It's ok if I don't get one, it would be awesome if someone could help me understand this.

How can I get my instructable featured?

Hi I published an instructable a few days ago and i'd love to get it featured, what do I need to improve in order for it to happen? https://www.instructables.com/id/Baby-Crib-Musical-Mobile/

i'm trying to understand..what does featured mean?

What does the featured category represent exactly? I thought maybe the starred instructables means they have been part of a contest or a challenge.

"Rate" feature doesn't appear in Safari Mac OSX

I've noticed recently that the feature to rate an instrucable doesn't seem to work with Safari 5.0.5 on my Mac, running OS 10.5.8. Instructables that have been rated don't display the rating (stars) under the info tab, and instructables that haven't been rated, can't be rated. But when I switch to Firefox on the same computer, these features do appear. Suggestions?

Explore 'RECENT' and 'FEATURED' not working on IPHONE or IPOD TOUCH

Hello! I've been having problems on my IPHONE and IPOD for few days now. The RECENT and FEATURED shows old Instructables. Under 'FEATURED', I get 'SHOP TOOLS' from 2008. Under RECENT, I get 'DUCT TAPE PROJECTS' from Jul 2013. Not sure if this began after the last update or not. It won't refresh. I tried deleting and reinstalling the app with no luck. Help! (FYI - my IPHONE and IPOD TOUCH is still under the prevous OS)

Make a Little Brother video and Get Featured on BBtv!

We really dug Cory Doctorow's new book, Little Brother. We liked it so much that we've made a series of Instructables based on the w1n5t0n character in the book. Now Cory has thrown out a challenge to make a video based on any of these Instructables and post it to YouTube. The best one gets featured on BBtv.So, to recap:(1) Shoot it!(2) Upload it to YouTube or another video hosting site!(3) Tell us where to find it! Submit the url here.(4) Selected videos will be featured on BBtv! LinkWant to read the book? Then check it out for free!

How long does it take to get an instructable featured?

Hi!I just published an instructable yesterday, and I know it was a Sunday, so Instructables staff weren't at work. On top of that, it was late at night as well, so that wasn't the best time to get it reviewed. However, now it's up, and I'm wondering, how long does it usually take for someone to get around to reviewing a newly published instructable to deem it worthy of a feature?Thanks!38ren

Can dumb / feature phone be charged using USB?

Hello, I recently received a USB power pack but I can't seem to charge the dumb / feature phones that I have. When I use this adapter to connect the phones they say that they are charging but even after 5 hours they seem like they didn't get a charge t all. Is the voltage difference the issue? With the USB being 5V and the phone battery being 3.7V (though the output of the chargers that the phones came with is 5V). Could I have a faulty unit? Thanks for reading.

Add feature : move step to another 'ible draft

I like the new interface, but I have a suggestion that could make it better. I often work on multiple projects at once, and sometimes I move pictures and pieces of the Instructables around. It would be really convenient if you could take a step and move it out of one Instructable and into another or spawn a new one.

Feature request: Answers attributions on our profile page

Can we get some kind of metric to show how many Answers we've given? I know I've been helping out a lot by responding to Answers I see in the @askinstructables Twitter feed, but it'd be nice to get some kind of credit for this. Something like "Johntron has answered 27385702375 questions -- he's a BIG help" on my profile page.

Appreciate Nice Feature -- unpublished "Favorite" stays in place!

Yesterday I flagged a fellow member's unpublished I'ble as a "Favorite" (so I could give some feedback and copyediting). It was published today, and I thought I'd have to go and reflag the published version since the URL would be different. Not at all! It was still right there in my Favorites list, and the URL had automatically updated itself to the published version (the title with underscores) instead of the internal hash ID.

Feature Request: Sort Group Topics RECENT by default

As announced this morning by Rachel (and confirmed by me), it is now possible to create discussion topics within a Group. However, when we view a Group, those topics are presented in the order in which they were created, from OLDEST to newest. That means, for many Groups, the new topics are completely invisible to anyone visiting. There is no way to change that sort order from the Web interface.I would like to request that the "sort=RECENT" CGI argument be used by default for the presentation of Group topics, both on the Group page and also with the view all link. I have confirmed that adding this argument by hand to the URL has the expected effect.

Someone is passing off their 'featured' instructable as their own work :(

Hi, I wrote a tutorial a few years ago and popped it on youtube with a link to download the supporting files. It looks like one of the instructable 'authors' has taken my code, complete with stupid comments and popped it on here as their own work. I'm not worried about someone building on top of what I made but they appear to be offering little in the way of help to the people asking questions about the instructable and asking for people to vote for them in a challenge? Taking it, improving it and citing the source would be fine, or even taking it and citing the source but this seems to be straight out 'here's some code I wrote' Is there a way to lodge a complaint about this sort of stuff other than emailing info@ Thanks

A Puzzle featuring Xbox 360, a powerbook g4, and Connect360

Hi Everyone,I use a 12" powerbook g4 as a wireless adaptor for my xbox 360 (as shown here: https://www.instructables.com/id/Use-your-laptop-as-an-XboxXbox-360-wireless-adap/). I would like to use Connect360 (nullriver.com/products/connect360) to stream music and movies from my current computer onto the xbox 360. However, connect360 cannot see my xbox 360, and I suspect that is because it looks like a powerbook on the network, not an xbox 360, because it is using the powerbook's network connection. Is there anything i can do about this? This seemed like enough of a tweaking/hacking how-to that someone here might like to try it, or at least have ideas of how to go about it.Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Plagiarism fix - add another option to the flagging feature

An instructable was recently featured wherein many of the viewers of this instructable recognized the images from a different Author, and no credit to the name of the original author. I tried to flag it for admin, but there are only "Wrong Category", "Inappropriate", "Incomplete", or "Spam" as options to flag with. Although I don't want to add more work to your plate, I think if the community can flag a directly plagiarized ibble, that would be best. Here are the posts: Original by KaptainSkarlet: https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-gorgeous-Dragons-Egg/ Copycat: https://www.instructables.com/id/Really-Cool-Dragon-Eggs-for-Easter/ I think keeping the Instructables community free to copy is fine, but not direct ripping of the same images another author used. And not without crediting the author. Thanks!

How are the % ratings of featured Instructables changed?

I have a 31% featured rating. I have been working very hard on my published Instructables so my featured rating will raise. I published an Instructables that I worked several days on and it did not get featured. I was a little surprised because I know the content is good. My question is this: Is there a way to unpublish it and re-work it and re-publish it and see if it gets featured then? If I can't do that, how much will it change my featured rating if I delete the entire Instructable and start from scratch? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would a star rating system for Instructables be a useful feature?

This recent Instructables UI update has got me thinking.Star rankings provided by users are useful feedback options that are all over the web.Instructables has been around for a long time and has had about a gajillion (citation needed) how-to's-posted over the years. There is a fair amount of redundancy in some of these projects (looking at you, Minecraft, pen guns, drawing tutorials, most of the airsoft category) and they vary WIDELY in quality from very in depth valuable content to stuff that barely qualifies as a how-to at all. What if they could be ranked? The ranking score of each how-to would be a simple out-of-5-star rating. This rating could be used for a few things:Sorting when searching. Obvious really, when you search for a how-to, there could be a little sorting option to sort by typical variables like time, views, and rating. This would help direct users to better content.Allow mods/helpful people to figure out what how-tos are really not working. This would sort the mass of content into a more easily managed hierarchy. With the new tips feature that allows people to give input on projects, this sorting would really highlight what projects really need some help, allowing users to help less successful users to improve their content. This gives a direct amount of feedback for the user, sure, views help to show the amount of interest in a project, but interest does not equal overall quality. If a user posts something that is low quality (poorly written, misleading, bad pictures, unfinished, unedited, plagiarist, or just plain dangerous) and they can see that they get a bad rating, it is a good sign that they need to work on their content. An automated service in the site could give people a head's up if their content is consistently rating low. You could get a message that says something like "Hey, we noticed that ________ instructable is performing poorly, here's some suggestions that could help it improve! (then link to the how-to-make-a-good-instructable-content) This keeps users focused on all of their content, not just recent stuff. Obviously there should be a switch that lets users turn these notifications on and off so if they don't care to use it, it's not forced on them. There are problems with this, of course. Ranking users means that personal taste can influence the quality rating of a project, rather than the actual quality of the content. Someone who hates cats could go poorly rate all the cat-related content, regardless of it's overall quality. This means there needs to be a way to make sure that the star-rating system isn't abused too much to damage good content. There needs to be a barrier to entry. Some suggested barriers to entry for star rating privileges could be:Pro membership automatically lets you rank content (pro never seemed that exclusive anyway, this could make it more desirable)Having X number of instructables posted lets you rank content (3 I think would be a fair number)Having X number of views/comments lets you rank contentWinning a contest lets you rank contentHaving the star rating of your instructables be net positive would let you rank content (IE, the majority of all your content has an above 3 star rating)These barriers or a combination of them would help ensure that only personally invested users would have access to the ranking system to ensure good data.Thoughts? Would be awesome if a moderator or Instructables dev could chime in here.

Why is the "Featured" Filter Automatically on when I Explore Instructables?

I really don't like it when I'm just looking at instructables and I realize I'm not seeing all of them because the "Featured" filter is on. For example, I click on the "Explore" button, then I click "Technology", then, I see that the only types of instructables I've been seeing are featured.

Article Fails To Credit Instructables

To: Ginny Mies, PC World Staff Editor, and Nick Mediati, PC World Assistant EditorCC: Kimberly Brinson, PC World Managing Editor, Ed Albro, PC World Editor, and Eric Wilhelm, Instructables CEOWho is this guy?I can't find his name on your staff list, so I hope you are the right people to talk to about this.I was reading the article in the above link and realized that I had just read most of that stuff (almost in that order) already on a web site called Instructables. While I don't care so much about the actual copyrights (Instructables is largely based on "Attribution non-commercial share-alike" legality), I do believe that at least a formal nod is in order. It might look (to those unfamiliar with Instructables) like he did some fancy research to gather those neat tips together, but to me it is practically undeniable that he was surfing Instructables. (I am not exaggerating, I read at least half of those tips on Instructables within the same hour!)Perhaps the best tip Zack Stern could have given was the only obvious one he left out: Visit Instructables for more of these user-enabling tips!Sincerely,Ricky RatzlaffAvid Instructables readerP.S. How did I get so many views on my instructable? Answered

How did I get so many views on my instructable? I mean I like it and I'd probably look at it but it has really gotten a lot of views. It's featured, is that what did it? Also how does something get featured? Who decides who gets featured? Once it's featured does it stay featured?
