A conversation with Rep. Krieger about his bike registration billRepresentative Wayne Krieger (R-Gold Beach) wants everyone who owns a bicycle in the state of Oregon to pay a mandatory, $54 registration fee (and then renew it for another $54 every two years). He is the chief architect of House Bill 3008, a proposal that was met with a lot of negative responses on this site when I reported on it today.I spoke to Krieger via telephone from his Salem office on Friday morning to learn more about his reasons for proposing this bill.Krieger's main motivation seems to be one of equity. When I asked for his main impetus behind the proposal, he brought up the Vulnerable Roadway Users law that passed last session. That bill created a new class of road user, and stiffened penalties for anyone involved in a crash that seriously injured a vulnerable roadway user (includes people on foot, on bikes, on animals, skateboards, etc...).via Freakonomics.

I have a few Instructables I'm working on - none posted yet - but i'm debating on what would be the best licensing...On the simple project, I'm going to go with the Creative Commons (attribution, share-alike) license. The other project is a different creature - I'm looking at creating a general purpose widget - then others can adapt the widget to their specific use. To get others involved in adapting the widget, i would start a contest here and offer a prize to the best adapted (or 'remixed') widget. Here's the dilemma that haunts me a little...1) A man or women that is 17 years old adapts the widget to fulfill a need that many people can use. Everyone is happy. Then, 6 months later, their adapted widget is being sold at the local hardware store. Great! Except that the Maker isn't getting any kind of design fee for the commercial product - and could have used that money to help with their college expenses...2) A man or women that is 67 years old adapts the widget that becomes the 'must have' item for seniors. This time it's being sold on QVC and being promoted in AARP magazine. Great! Except that the Maker isn't getting any kind of design fee for the commercial product - and could have used that money to help with health expenses...As for me - i'm looking at only attribution for the general purpose widget and waive any kind of design fee for commercial use for myself...BUT -If someone designs and makes an adaptive widget that really takes off - then i would like them to get credit and at least reap a little fiscal reward for their blood, sweat, and tears that they put into it if it takes off as a huge commercial success.Again - just attribution for me (it's a general purpose widget!) - the thoughtfulness in making comes from adapting it to a specific use - it's fun - but it takes work too. When i get ready to post - I was thinking of a...Makers License 1) Attribution, share alike, I waive any and all commercial fees for the general purpose widget2) Remix Fee: a) Remix Makers fee: You can build a Remix Design for yourself - however - if you intend to sell the remix to others then a remix fee applies. The remix fee to the author is limited to $1.00 per item you sell. Contact Author for fee arrangement before selling.OR b) Remix Maker waives all fees.I don't know - am i over thinking this?Any help, advice, or suggestions - Please Post!Thank You,-MM

Hi - I really enjoy instructables. Seeing all of the cool things people do here inspired me to create a related site. That site is for people who want to post their how-to videos and collect online rental fees. Becoming a publisher is free - the site is supported out of the rental fees (you keep up to 76% of the fees you collect). I won't be tacky (more than I have been already anyway) and post the URL here, but please PM me if you are interested. We're actively looking for publishers who want to earn a few bucks. Thanks, and sorry if this is inappropriate - please delete it if crosses the line. Jeff

Does anyone know and understand the process of creating a trademark? As best as I can gather creating a trademark is as easy as putting TM after what ever you would like trademarked. However, if you wish to register your trademark so you can have the R behind it that is where the line starts to blur and become a little more fuzzy. There are some fairly expensive fees as well as quite of bit of research that you first must do or face losing your $300+ fees. So if anyone has had anything registered with the Us Copyright and Trademark office please share your experience.

There is an up coming bill in congress that will change copyright laws. saying that if you want to copyright your work you will have to register it and pay a fee for it to private registration companies. With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense. This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk!go to this link for more information and spread the word:orphan act

I've got the basics of the contest:1. Sign up at both sites.2. Create something, documenting the process.3. Post the item on Etsy for sale following contest guidelines.4. Post the information on Instructables following contest guidelines.5. Win! (okay, maybe)However, the item as I envisioned it would be a licensed item - people could make it for personal use under the CC license subject to the selected provisions* or contact me for commercial licensing.*selected provisions might be, say $5 for making an unlimited number for personal use, a $50 licensing fee for commercial re-sale, along with attribution, et cetera, for a stated amount of timeIs this allowed under instructables rules? I know that standard CC is used here, but I don't know yet if it can be combined with a licensing fee, and if CC does allow it if Instructables does. Thanks!

As someone who just dropped by and spotted an interesting project, I am not interested in a monthly annually renewable subscription. How about offering a one-time payment for a download? I'd pay up to $2 depending on the complexity. Without this option no money would flow, so looks like a win-win to me.

I see NO SENSE in INSTRUCTABLES when you make money from the advertisers...WHY do the users ALSO have to pay???The pro fee is VERY expensive and from what i have read it does NOT work any better than the regular program. Let me see if i have this right...You get the users who pay for an account to publish their work and then you charge other people to see their ideas?? How much of the pro fee do the people who post THEIR work on here get?? This is looking ALOT like DISH or CABLE tv. You pay for a service that is supposed to commerical free....NOW either is nothing BUT commericals because some CEO has to GET RICH off other people...LIKE the ones who do ALL the work!!! PLEASE enlighten mje as to WHY the average Joe has to pay for it????

I am looking for a solution to make a fabric waterproof. (including cotton and polycotton blends/synthetics) I am looking to do something cheaper than buying a store-bought solution, such as making it from scratch. I have looked into purchasing octadecyltrichlorosilane, but it is both expensive and hazardous to ship ($25 hazmat fee) If possible I am also looking into finding a solution that is non-toxic and is safe for use on people.
