Filters

This isn't so much a problem with the site or anything else like that. I was wondering, though, in the effort to enhance the instructables experience, could a site search with filters be a feasible thing? For instance, if I want to search a topic, but I want to filter out all K'nex associated pages, then a "-knex" would do it, kinda like a Google parameter. If it sounds good, let's see it happen! It would be a huge help in doing a search on any subject. What do you think?

Filtering?

There has got to be a way to filter the new items or searches because it's getting ridiculous. I was just on the new featured instructables and out of the 30 on the first page there were 10 food related, 2 toy related and 2 jewelry related. There were others I'm not interested in but come on.... Toys? Jewelry? FOOD?!?! Especially food. Shouldn't they be on a food site? I don't see how they really belong on a DIY site. I will probably have to live with that but isn't there some way I can filter these things out? I tried using a minus   -food   in the search box and it returned ONLY food articles. I also found another question similar to mine that required using Greasemonkey add-on which I installed but the link to the java script file it needs doesn't work anymore. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Knex filter

Knex is nice and all, but is there a way to never see another Knex project while still seeing the other projects on Instructables. It just takes too much time to load the Knex thumbnails when there are other projects of interest.I'm sure others would filter out other project types. Such a filter would be most appreciated.Dave

Filters Please

Hello,  I would like to officially request a "blocked list" so users can prevent certain results from showing.  It would dramatically improve my experience if I could eliminate any instructable that's a toy.   For example; in the user's profile, have a field in which keywords can be added such as knex and lego,  or perhaps the whole toy category, and then have that list apply at all times.  I'm sure there are other adults who will appreciate this as well, while still letting the kids have their fun. Thank You.

Filter Searches

There needs to be filters after a search so that people can narrow what they're looking for to relevant threads.  i.e., if I'm looking for something that would most likely be in wood working, than I should be able to filter out anything that involves food.  Categories should be similar to those found in explore.  Allowing additional tags would further help this experience.

Filtering Results

I think I've started to figure out how your sorting works, for instance /type:, /category:_, /keyword:_. But I have a few questions...Is there way to do an OR statement? If I do https://www.instructables.com/tag/type:instructable/category:art/category:food/ (which is an awesome combination, BTW), it shows results for art AND food, is there a way to do art OR food? Also, is there a way to do a without? Say, without the keyword "cool"?

Filter OUT a keyword

Ok, I know you can limit your viewing to a particular keyword, but how would you go about filtering out that keyword? For instance, I don't get the whole knex obsession around here, I don't own any knex, and I never intend to... so I don't want to dig through 40 guns, knives, swords, cellphone holders, etc. just to find something interesting.

Spamming Filters plugged.

Seems the spamming filters have been turned up pretty high and more that usual is getting caught causing that DELAY in posting weather it be an ible of post ect. Filtering spam is good of course but geez, i made a comment in the forums of a current bug problem and guess what my comment is not there . I can only say it is because of the filters. Maybe my comment will appear after the relevance of the topic is over. There needs to be a filter list added that puts the known non spammers into. The people that are submitting ibles and or comments that are not spam. You go ahead and make this secret like it is now so people won't complain about who's on it or not. The people that are your supporters should be in the Good Filter, let there ibles and comments submit without delay. So i am in favor of a GOOD FILTER list. I hope my forum topic gets published in time so as to still be relevant.

Solar Filter for Telescopes

Having seen some predictions of increased solar activity over the next two years, I decided to make a filter so I can check it out with my trusty telescope. To start out, I constructed the rig shown in photo A, and practiced with it by cutting disks of plain glass. Make a table like that in photo C so you can make a continuous score on the glass, without stopping. Put oil on the wheel of the grass cutter. Be sure that the surface you work on is flat. You can skip this if you want a square filter. After scoring, your glass should look like that in photo B, with a uniform and even cut. Next, put the scored glass on a soft surface like a mouse pad, with the scored surface wetted with water and face down. Press on the back of the score with a dull nail to start a crack. By continual pressing you can watch the crack propagate all the way around. Then, make 8 radial scores from the circle to the edge of the glass and propagate those cracks in the same manner as the disk. When you do it right, you get a result like photo D, where the pieces were separated for illustration. When you get good at this with regular glass, you can cut the mirror into a disk. With the mirror, you score the glass on the side that has the metal coating. Or, you can just cut the mirror in a square instead of a circle. Photo E shows an uncut and a finished cut mirror. The mirror came out of the back of a discarded projection TV. Some of the mirrors are plastic films, some are second surface, some are first surface glass but the metal coating is too thin. There are many variations, but you need to find a first surface glass mirror that reduces the light level by 12 stops (as measured by a LunaPro SBC light meter). Photographically, this is like reducing the light level from F1.4 to F64. This level of light reduction will be hard to find. WARNING: Use of a mirror with a thin reflective coating can result in eye damage if used to view the sun through a telescope. I have access to a smaller commercial filter to use as a guide. This filter produced a bright blue image of the sun, so I added a red filter at the eyepiece. This combination produced a normal yellow image of the sun. There were no significant sunspots visible, so I didn’t bother taking any pictures. The Filter is mounted to a screw-in lens cap.

Unable to filter searches

When I try to search the instructables website I'm not able to alter the scope of the search. My searches return comment, forum posts, etc rather than just instructables. The search type combo box reverts to "All" and doesn't work. If I use the whole site search (top-right corner of the page) it does limit the search to instructable articles, but if I use the navigation links (Next, page 1, etc), the search again reverts. I was also unable to search the forums to see if this had been reported by others. Here's my platform: Windows XP SP3 Firefox 3.5.3 with clean profile Also tested with Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 Cookies enabled Javascript enabled McAfee Security Center (Antivirus and Firewall) Linksys BEFSR11 Router Comcast cable internet

Is there a way to get rid of a buzz in a state variable filter?

I have built an audio equlizer for my independent study at school. There are a total of four state variable filters. They are summed together using a summing op amp circuit. Everything is working fine, except for a buzz I have. I have not calculated what frequency it is at, but it sounds as though it is between 200 and 400 Hz.

Instructable is still hung up.

Need a hand with an instructable again. It seems mine keep getting "hung up" in the filters. When this happens, they stay in limbo for a good long time, then when they're finally pushed through, they're already buried on page 32 of the "recent" list. I've tried E-Mailing Ed and randofo 2 days ago, but haven't gotten a response. Anyone have any ideas how to deal with this? Or what "filters" are in place so I can avoid having my instructable get throttled, then buried?

can a automotive fuel filter be used to filter drinking water? Answered

I am working on an emergency water filtration system for when I go camping. This system would be used to manually filter out sediment before I purify the water. Automotive fuel filters are cheap and easy to connect to tubing, but I am afraid that the paper filter element might be coated in some sort of toxic chemical that will leech into the water as i filter it. I cannot find any information about this subject on the internet, so if you know anything please tell me. thank you.

Way to filter Knex articles?

I like to browse for ideas, but every 5th article seems to be about Knex. Since I don't have a Knex set they are just spam to me. Published Instructables never appear - spam filter bug

Without fail, every instructable I publish gets stuck in the Instructables spam filter. Now some might consider my Instructables to be spam, but it's a real pain to put a lot of effort into an instructable, and never see it make it through to official published status. I always have to send a PM to @jessyratfink to ask her to release the Instructable from the filtering system. It would be awesome if whatever it is that is causing my Instructables to be tagged as NGFI (Not Good For Instructables), be corrected. That way I would not have to bug @jessyratfink every time I hit the publish button!

Is there any way to "blacklist" instructable keywords when exploring the instructables?

I normally like to just look at random instructables on the site to see if there are any that catch my eye or haven't seen before. The problem here is that it seems like every page of the zeitgeist features yet another K'NEX gun.I'm alright with K'NEX, I remember having loads of fun with my set back before I lost all of the pieces, but I'm just not interested in them now and don't want to bother looking at them. No offense to the authors of the guides; I hope that they keep doing what they're doing. So I suppose there isn't such a feature now, but is there any chance of implementing a user configurable blacklist of keywords that they don't want to see? Currently the filter in the explore section allows you to choose a number of keywords/categories that instructables must have in order to be displayed, but I think it'd be pretty great to have the opposite functionality as well. Thanks in advance :D-baconfish

clean and reuse washwater

I want to clean and reuse my washing machine water to wash clothes.  The system must be #1 cheap to build(off the shelf parts), #2 cheap to use(wasting power to save water is stupid). I am thinking, an easily accessed fine mesh lint trap. A second stage to remove chemicals (sand?charcoal?) and a third to kill any buggies (UV light?). I will also need to address which products are best to use for this system. And of course a valve too return to the "normal" system for some occaisions. Thanks for any input . nursenary

UV Filter on a digital camera

I was told by a few people that UV filters are useless on a digital camera. I also listened to the sales guy when I bought a DSLR just recently and he said "No they serve no purpose for the pics with a digital camera, but it adds a layer of protection to the front lens. UV filters are cheap, I bought it based on the salesman's advice. Yesterday it paid for itself . I was getting ready to take some pics of the neighbors new sports car and he was showing off,  spinning the tires when it happened. The filter just all the sudden shattered. It had to be from a rock, but I could not find one anywhere.... anyway... The camera lens is fine and has a brand new UV filter on.

Is my 'ible stuck in the filters.

I published an 'ible about a hat steamer in the wee small hours of December 30th & it still hasn't gone to the site, is it possibly stuck in the filters? I do think it would be a good idea to give some information about what causes this to happen, a list of keywords to avoid for example would be very handy. It does seem a bit random at times, I have seen 'ibles come out when people have asked about the same problem that were entirely inoffensive & others go straight to the site which contained what I feel were highly inappropriate words in images but not in the body text, one recent one had the f word in it at least a dozen times in images but the author was very careful not to actually use it anywhere in the text of the 'ible.

Is it possible to filter Instructables questions? Answered

There are a few folks who ask questions that I'd really rather not be tempted to answer, since I would have trouble holding to the "Be Nice" policy. It would be better for both me and them if I could tell Instructables not to show their questions to me at all. Call it a killfile, or an anti-subscribe... Is there such a mechanism? (I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.)

Filtering queue question/suggestion

Please correct me if I've mis-observed this, or if it has already been addressed. When I use Instructables, I always use the "Recent" option to browse recent Instructables. Often, when I look again after several hours or days, new Instructables have popped up, interspersed with ones I had viewed previously. So, when a new Instructable gets hung up in the filters, am I right in observing that it then gets inserted (when it is released) "back" to the time when it was originally published? It seems that it would be better to post it (chronologically) when it was released from the filters, rather than, in some cases, a page or two back.

Repeatedly Being Caught in the Filter

Hello All, Please forgive me if any frustration shows through in this post.  I understand all are busy and are probably receving this sort of thing from every angle. I've been caught yet again in the filter preventing my submission from showing on the Recent page.  I seem to be falling into this pit quite frequently despite the very benign nature of my submissions. My submission does not appear while others continue to show.  More frustrating has been how a submission freed from the filter remains in its chronological position, thus putting it far down the page (or on the next  page even). Today I deleted my latest submission, added to the descriptive text (having been told a description too short can trigger the filter) and tried to anticipate/delete any possible trigger word or phrase.  I then resubmitted it - to no avail.  The submission is  a video link.  Were I to add any more text, it would be bulk/fluff.  The subject covers the roasting and brewing of tea - surely a completely benign subject. The submission in this case is: https://www.instructables.com/id/Harvest-Roast-and-Brew-Green-Tea-using-a-Common-Sh/ Could someone with the Mojo please review and free it?  Further, any advice as to how I can avoid this problem in future would be most appreciated. Thanks & Cheers.
