Vulcan Flies!

The last air-worthy Avro Vulcan Bomber is flying again! After seven million GBP, and countless hours of work, XH558 is again in the air, and has completed weeks of tests and trials, and her crew are anxiously waiting for the permit to fly. This is wonderful news, and genuinely emotional. Vulcan is an absolutely beautiful aircraft, and I was privileged to be present at almost her last flight near Manchester well over a decade ago.I have no idea what preceded Vulcan in the airshow, because all the time the preceding act was show, Vulcan was flying in a holding pattern over the Pennine hills. Whatever was flying in front of me, all I and many of the crowd had eyes for was this shark-like presence circling on the horizon, like a predator haunting a reef. When she came closer for her actual show, it was one of the few times I have gotten genuinely emotional over a machine. Her grace, power, lines...I'm even getting a lump in my throat as I type.It is one of the highlights of my life to have been there when the Vulcan crew, believing she was about to be pensioned off forever, broke air-show rules and flew over the crowd, at low altitude, with full afterburners on.It was the loudest sound I have ever heard, explosions included. My ears actually shut down. As she went over, I screamed and shouted with sheer joy, and I could not hear a noise I made! After she passed, as hearing slowly returned, I realised that it was still noisy - every single car alarm was sounding, triggered by the noise of Vulcan's passing. There were a lot of cars. It's been years since then, and it still stands clear in an otherwise patchy memory.I am literally bouncing at the idea that I might get to see her in the air again.UnfortunatelyBut there's a hitch. They've spent millions already, but they need more. Simple day-to-day maintenance costs, plus the rising price of fuel, mean that it will cost upwards of 50,000GBP per month to keep XH558 in the air. That's a lot.I don't normally do things like this, it's close to genuine spam, but I'm asking you all a favour. As Makers, lovers of the art of machinery, I'm asking you to contribute.Donations should be sent to VTST, Bruntingthorpe Airfield, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, LE17 5QS, United Kingdom, or by ‘phone to (44)116 247 8145, or online at http://www.vulcantothesky.com .If you don't fancy sending cash, you could buy something from their shop.Donation web pageThat's it, folks - begging over.

Jetpack flies at AirVenture

The Martin Jetpack made its first public flight while at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 on Tuesday. The actual flight lasted seconds and was confined to a few feet off the ground, with handlers gripping the device even as 16-year-old Harrison Martin manipulated the controls. The Martin Jetpack team is scheduled to conclude Thursday's air show with another flight at the mouth of AeroShell Square. More air show flights may take place later in the week as well.Today this jetpack was demonstrated at EAA AirVenture. It seems like the closest thing yet to one that is actually marketable: it has flown a demonstration flight in public, and a CNN reporter was able to handle it after minimal training. Rather than a finicky rocket that burns hydrogen peroxide, it uses a gasoline V-4. It's also considered an ultralight, which means very minimal regulations.Darn it, I could have gone to AirVenture, and I decided not to this year!Linky.

Flies - and how to repel them?

Hi, My parents live near a cow farm, and in summer, there is a major problem with flies. Over the years, the house has had most of it's orifices closed with fly & mosquito screens, but even so when eating outside, or playing in the pool, the little buzzers are a real pain. For the moment, nothing really seems to work on repelling flies. What works for mosquitoes does not apply to a fly, a part from fly swats & screens... Does any one have any natural or electronic fly repeller that really works? Cheers, Bpfh

How do I get flies out of my tent fly? How can I keep them out? Answered

When camping I have noticed that my tent fly collects loads of flies, right above the tent door. Keeping the fly unzipped overnight seems to let them out somewhat, but there are always a few. I don't imagine the flies like being trapped in there, and they annoy me with their buzzing. How can I get them out or keep them from getting in?

How do I control the pesky flies in my yard?

My yard has been taken hostage by flies. Literally. We cannot go outside because they have waged war on us! They DO NOT go away. To sit and relax would be divine...unfortunately it's impossible to sit outside without divebombed by swarms of them. We have tried so many things...no dog feces, keep the yard cut and trimmed, etc. Is there a homemade remedy or solution that we can put on the grass to kill the larvae and/ or deter these pesky pets?! Please help! Our summer is fading fast as we are held hostage in our home! Thank you ever so kindly!

clean way to catch flies in the house

Hi i hope this is the right place;  I just found a somewhat clean way to get rid of flies in the house, spray them with spray starch (for ironing clothes) and they will slow down so they can be caught and put outside, or use paper to pick up and remove them. I had spray starch in the kitchen and the weather changed here, its humid and suddenly there are flies in the house.  i dont like to swat them and leave that to clean up;  by chance i used the starch, it took some effort to target them but it worked.  i did this last nite, today the 2 i sprayed apparently shook it off were not hurt, so anyone who wouldnt want to hurt a fly could spray them with starch, put them out and there is no  mess to clean and nature can do what nature does.

How would you trap fruit flies so that you could feed them to foul (chickens, ducks, etc.) and fish? Answered

I've often marvelled at how fast fruit flies appear after dumping a fresh supply of the morning's fruit juicer cocktail mush on the top of our worm box. How can I trap those insects _economically_ and then feed them to livestock? Chickens, duck, fish etc. would readily gobble the fruit flies up IF the flies weren't flying around... how would you capture lots of wild fruit flies? I have been thinking about a trap that allows them to fly in but not fly out and then throwing the trap into a freezer to slow them down and then throwing them to the birds... but I'd like to find something that could be done entirely outdoors WITHOUT electricity. Ideas?

How to make a no smell, no flies, worm compost bin?

I want to make an indoor compost bin because it's too cold for the worms in the winter. My dad says it'll smell way too much and actually i'm worried about the flies. I already made (and used) a worm compost bin last year and it was smelly so it was sent into the garage and all of them died in the winter. So is there a way to make a no smell, no flies worm compost bin? BTW the compost bin will be put in my basement that has no ventilation.

Pilot flies over English Channel with jetpack

A Swiss pilot has crossed the English Chanel with a jet-powered wing. He started the trip by jumping out of a plane over Calais and landed with a parachute in Dover. All together, the whole flight lasted 10 minutes to make the 22 mile flight. The 49-year-old flew on a plane to more than 8,200ft (2,500m), ignited jets on a wing on his back, and jumped out.Mr Rossy had hoped to reach speeds of 125mph.It felt "great, really great", said Mr Rossy: "I only have one word, thank you, to all the people who did it with me." How to keep FLIES away from your food!

I discovered this little "trick" (quite by accident) when I was grilling last week.  Flies do not like onions!  A few slices of raw, sliced red onion in the immediate vicinity of your food will keep disgusting flies from dining on your edibles. Onions are so effective, I'm tempted to make a pair of hoop earrings out of 'em!   Maybe onion perfume? oh, the possibilities! ;-D

Theremin Circuit?

Does anybody have a theremin circuit that doesn't have coils? I need it to be compact so programming seems ideal. A PIC solution might work...any suggestions? Any other processor is fine also. No, I can't use a light theremin... And no, I can't use Harrison Instruments' because its too big and too many connections. If possible, then this is to be used on fruit flies to see how much activity they do when foreign substances are added. Again, if possible if a PIC solution is used, then can the PIC detect when the flies move because they change an oscillation. Most likely I will wind a coil and place it in the jar and then have it detect. The best way would be to use the PIC to print an output via some sort of display so that the scientific results can be tested.

Who's Cannon Rules----------I_AM_CANADIAN's heavy cannon rules!!

Its official, and i accept my defeat, IAC's was rated better and more people prefer it. How will it compare to my newest instructable, my HIGH POWER CROSSBOW. Whose cannon is better, My Light Cannon V2.2, or I_AM_CANADIAN's Heavy cannon V5. They are both special in their own ways. His is more powerful and flies 80 feet. It loads in over 30 seconds. Mine is a little less powerful but flies almost 150 feet. Mine loads in under 15 seconds. Also, Mine uses 8 rubber bands and his uses 16. Here is the puncturing using the same front on the ammo. Try to build them before you decide. WHOSE IS BETTER. Note-I did not fake these pictures. Try them yourself and the results will be the same. I am not trying to start a fight I just want to see whose you think is better. Note. The Video was shot with IAC's V5 and my V2.3. I just built V3.0 but did not post it yet.

What causes oodammo to spin in certain guns, when other guns make them fly straight?

I've noticed, with guns like the MeZak, my new one and the V2, and a quite a few others, the ammo sort of spazzes out and flips around when fired, and isn't accurate. But with guns like the TBOS, Lowney's small oodammo pistol, etc. and TBAP the ammo flies straight. It's about 2 accurate ones for every one flippy one. Can someone explain why?

When Toast Flies

It is not often that I find something so useless so awesome. Freddie Yauner's toaster pops your toasted bread way up into the air with high-pressure carbon dioxide. He is going to try to break his own world record of the highest toaster pop, which currently stands merely at the height of his ceiling. An added bonus of this: if he pops it to the right height, he may be able to avoid the curse of the toast always falling butter-side down.Link

Rectangle accuracy tip...

Well, I made a discovery when I was messing around with some shells, I found that if you load a red rod into your rectangle, then put a shell of 5 silver spacers all the way back on the red rod... The red rod then flies extremely straight. The shell then falls straight down, where you can use it again if you want. P.s. This also works for yellow, and grey rods.P.p.s. You can also do the same thing for oodammo, but with only one silver spacer.TRY IT OUT PEOPLE=P

As it rotates (or flies) it will pass a fixed point on the ground and release its cargo onto the ground below. The fixed point must communicate in some way with the plane/helicopter to show that the location can be moved and the planes cargo will drop to the new location. It is a tricky task.  I am also restricted in size - my entire project cannot be larger than 500mm  All helpful ideas would be HUGELY appreciated.

Retractable door screen

Hi, It's just coming on to nice warm weather here in Australia and the flies are pretty bad. We have an odd situation with our front door in that there's this wooden beam supporting part of the roof that comes across low. This makes it impossible to have a screen door that opens outward (the main door opens inward). My son suggested that we get some sort of retractable screen, but they are so $$. Does anyone know of instructions for how to make your own? Perhaps something that retracts on a vertical roller on one side and when open, it seals tight on the other side with a magnet strip. The bottom half of the bat body (see photos) has the battery case with the wires and motor on the other side, it also has led lights. The motor works fine when I turn it on and the lights work too. Can I use this for anything? Any ideas would be great. The motor is small and I dont know what kind it is, but the gears turn very fast. I thought it would be too small for anything, but the bat is actually quite heavy, so I should be able to use it for something Thx

I may have some terms wrong (Like hive-mind), so if I do, please .tell me so I can correct that.
