Flying hovercraft!

Bungee jumping, kite-boarding... Why do all the extremest sports seem to come from New Zealand? The lightweight, canvas-covered wings are attached to the craft with what he calls a "Jesus pin". "If that comes out, you see Jesus," he said. Because the hovercraft is not classed as an aircraft under New Zealand aviation laws, the operator does not require a pilot's licence. Daily Telegraph.

Fly Powered Planes

Flies generally buzz about and don't do much besides feed the local spiders, but here's a a couple ways to put them to work by powering tiny airplanes. Check out the models below from the 70s or the video for something more recent to show you that, yes, this crazy idea actually works. Insect Power via Neatorama

Flying car idea

I was thinking about building a flying car that would have most wingspan hidden under the car (pops out when activated) and the doors would be the tips. (What used to be the back doors would roll over van-style, and the back would otherwise be covered by sheet metal) In the back, there would be two vertical rudders and the spoiler would be cut into flaps for horizontal rudders. The thing would overall be powered by two helicopter jet engines. Once the flight system is activated, the gear shift (auto trans) would turn into the throttle, and the gas/brake pedals would turn into the rudder pedals. The idea is to make a flying car that still (when wings are stowed and trunk cover is closed) looks like a normal car. The question: is this possible?

Flying Pig Website

If anybody likes automata, but can't be bothered to work in wood and metal, try Flying Pig models. They (mainly he) make and sell cardboard kits that move in interesting ways.Obviously, most of them are for sale, but he has some free models for downloading, which change very occasionally.Probably the most interesting parts of Flying Pig for this site, though, are his Workshop Notes blog, where Rob updates readers on the process he goes through developing his models (he's part way through a dinosaur at the moment, and has released a kids range). He also has a section of mechanisms, with animations of all the paper mechanisms he uses, plus several that don't go into paper models (like a stirling engine).Generally, it's a great resource for anybody interested in engineering, paper or otherwise.

Bolts That Fly Straight

I just made a crossbow from Lego (not much fire power but it works) and I have been firing pencil from it but they hardly go straight. i tried adding cross fins and even an elevator hoping that it would be stable but it isnt working so if anyone has any ideas fire away.

City Flying Taxi

LINK"Developed by the British company Avcen, the Jetpod is a small twin-jet aircraft with newly developed VQSTOL (Very Quiet Short Take-off and Landing) technology - and it’s aimed to make short-distance air travel possible in built-up urban areas by the year 2010.""75 Jetpods would service a city the size of London and thereby relieve road traffic of 37,000 return car journeys every day. A one-way flight from outer London to the city centre would take just 4 to 6 minutes. The Jetpod doesn’t even require a conventional runway. It can land on grass, dirt or stone-strewn areas. Avcen designed the Jetpod using the latest jet engine technologies for optimal fuel efficiency and lower emissions noise levels, when compared to car transportation.TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSDRIVE SYSTEM: Dual jet enginesENGINE THRUST: 2 x 13.3 kN (3,000 lbs)CRUISING SPEED: 550 km/h (350 mph)FLYING RANGE: 1480 km (920 miles)OPERATING PAYLOAD: 700 kg (1,543 lbs)SEATING CAPACITY: 7"This is pretty cool, can't wait to see if it actually gets into production.

Self-Flying Balloon

I have an idea to make a bunch of smallish balloons that have a LED sinside and small circuits that would control small heating elements to randomly change the density of the air inside the balloons, making them rise or fall. Just as a fun art project, making a bunch of them and letting them into a room for a party or something. A couple of issues I have: I'm having a hard time figuring out how to calculate the buoyancy, though that may have to come later once I decide on all the components. I don't want to use any lighter-than-air materials like Helium, just regular air heated up. I've been trying to find some small ceramic heaters, but I haven't had much luck. Ideally, something like this seems like it would work perfectly, but I need to find some that I can buy in quantities less than 20,000: http://cdsk.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008801115398/pdtl/Heating-element/1070197186/Surface-Heating-Elements.htm Whatever I choose would also need to heat up and cool down pretty quickly so the rising/falling would have a stronger effect. I might be asking too much here. I'd need the whole circuit to be pretty small and lightweight. If I use an Arduino Uno, could I just transplant the ATmega328 into the balloon? If I used a small watch battery, would that even provide enough juice to operate an LED and a heating element? Anything bigger seems like it would be too heavy. As for the casing, I plan on whipping something up in Blender and printing it out in lightweight plastic. It would have to hold the circuitry and be airtight to keep the balloon sealed. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

old Monster Fly Back transformer!

Old Monster Fly Back transformer! I have one old school fly back transformer, This thing is three times the size of a normal fly back. I think it is worth about 3 fly backs, because I really don't think I can find another this size the cost should be $30 If you don't think its worth the cost, I'll just junk it and use it on one of my other projects, you just can't find too many old CRT transformers any more, just newer smaller ones. you can leave me a comment or send me an email. the fly back is a little dusty.

clean way to catch flies in the house

Hi i hope this is the right place;  I just found a somewhat clean way to get rid of flies in the house, spray them with spray starch (for ironing clothes) and they will slow down so they can be caught and put outside, or use paper to pick up and remove them. I had spray starch in the kitchen and the weather changed here, its humid and suddenly there are flies in the house.  i dont like to swat them and leave that to clean up;  by chance i used the starch, it took some effort to target them but it worked.  i did this last nite, today the 2 i sprayed apparently shook it off were not hurt, so anyone who wouldnt want to hurt a fly could spray them with starch, put them out and there is no  mess to clean and nature can do what nature does.

how to save energy

Do you want to learn how to go green or save enrgy. Well your at the right place. To start try by buying solar lamps and make a clothesline washers and dryers use a ton of energy. If you are looking for a car you should think about a priuis hybrid. They get up to 60 mpg!!!! Also turn lights off if not being used. always turn ff the tv and computer when gone or not using it may be a hassle for some people so if you have a desktop at least turn off the screen. please comment

3 Axis Rotating Flight Simulation Rig

I have currently started building a 3 axis rotating Flight simulation rig that can simulated any 3D motion with a pilot inside the main cabin in control. I know the project needs a lot of disciplines working together (Steel design-mechanics-electrical-electronics-control-programming) So I assembled a team of engineers who got interested in the idea but we are not all highly experienced and the issue is new to all of us. So far we managed to design the rig it self as in steel design area. when we started moving along to the next phase which is the mechanical parts and joints we faced a lot of issues regarding the weight and balance of the rigs. The attached image is for a flight simulator done by a company in Russia. We have great ideas for improving that design and building our own non expensive simulator. I didn't post our full design model done in solid works cause it's not yet perfected. All I asking is that , if there is any one out there willing to help us share the knowledge or has a bit of experience in the subject, or wants to join our collaborate work, please don't hesitate to contacts us. I don't know the forum rules so I won't post my contact information here, but please feel free to discuss the subject with us on the forum, so we might benefit all together from this experience.

Flies - and how to repel them?

Hi, My parents live near a cow farm, and in summer, there is a major problem with flies. Over the years, the house has had most of it's orifices closed with fly & mosquito screens, but even so when eating outside, or playing in the pool, the little buzzers are a real pain. For the moment, nothing really seems to work on repelling flies. What works for mosquitoes does not apply to a fly, a part from fly swats & screens... Does any one have any natural or electronic fly repeller that really works? Cheers, Bpfh

Looks like it gets some lift from forward motion, some from propellers, and some from buoyancy.

Robot fliers in commando competition

People and micro-aircraft race to rescue 'hostages'Robots inspired by moths, locusts, flies and swifts will take to the sky this week in an international competition for micro aerial vehicles in Agra, India. Teams will vie for the title -- as well as up to US$600,000 in funding -- for their tiny flying machines. The mission calls for squads of aerial and ground robots to reconnoitre for human 'commandos' tasked with reaching 'hostages' in a building one kilometre from the launch point. The robots will need to detect and disarm simulated chemical mines in an urban environment, and guide the commandos past guard teams to the hostages -- all within 40 minutes. The robots will use a mixture of wireless communication with a ground-control team, and autonomous navigation."It's a tough competition," says entrant Hemendra Arya, an engineer at the India Institute of Technology in Mumbai. "It really gives a challenge for the designer."Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) are hard to detect, maneuverable, portable, and more energy-efficient than larger aircraft. The United States is currently using first-generation MAVs the size of a rucksack to warn convoys about roadside bombs in Iraq.Larger unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Predator have been used for years to spot and attack enemies, but they need an airfield. The effort to build smaller craft got a boost when the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) began sponsoring competitions in late 1996. The US Department of Defense is co-sponsoring the Indian competition. more here

Retractable door screen

Hi, It's just coming on to nice warm weather here in Australia and the flies are pretty bad. We have an odd situation with our front door in that there's this wooden beam supporting part of the roof that comes across low. This makes it impossible to have a screen door that opens outward (the main door opens inward). My son suggested that we get some sort of retractable screen, but they are so $$. Does anyone know of instructions for how to make your own? Perhaps something that retracts on a vertical roller on one side and when open, it seals tight on the other side with a magnet strip. Thanks, ebb_AU
