Is polycaprolactone food safe? Answered

Polycaprolactone ( aka "Friendly Plastic" aka "Instamorph" ) is a very interesting material with lots of diy potential.  I wonder, since Wikipedia mentions it is used in surgical implants, does that mean also that it is food safe? And If it is food safe, is it also aquarium safe? Thanks for any insights

Infuse food coloring into wood

I made a vacuum chamber out off a mason jar, and attempted to infuse wood with food dye, using a brake bleeding vacuum pump.  The results were no better than if I painted the dye on.  All I got out of it was blue fingers (next time I will use rubber gloves). Anybody got any suggestions?

Question about foods that modify urine. Answered

Do you remember the first time that you ate asparagus  (Asparagusic acid) and being amazed at the burning rubber smell that came from your piddle within minutes of eating? Also I get a Sugar Puffs smell from real coffee and red wee from beetroot (betacyanins). Recently I have discovered that a handful of fenugreek will give an awful smell reminiscent of maple syrup gone wrong (3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)); cumin also. So my question is:  has anybody here discovered any other foodstuffs that do the job? This is the level of excitement that I'm living to at the moment. ps I've just read that fenugreek is used to turn sugar syrup into fake maple syrup.

Is there a silicone gel for molds that is food safe?

Most of the silicone molding Instructables that I have seen look very easy to do especially,  https://www.instructables.com/id/Two-Part-Silicone-Casting/   and  https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-silicone-mold-from-common-household-materia/   But i want to know if the materials used in these type projects are food safe for things like jello or chocolate casts. If anyone knows of a viable and cheap substitue if not would be of much help Thanks!

Are canned food cans made of steel?

By canned food cans, I don't mean soda cans, I mean the cans that pineapple and corn and other stuff come in, just to be clear. From what I know, it's probably not aluminum because it is magnetic. So what metal is it? Is it combined with different metals?

Plastic buckets - safe for food storage?

If a retail store's 5-, 6-, 7-gallon plastic buckets are made from HDPE (high density polyethylene), will they be safe for storing flour, sugar, honey, etc., and for growing vegetables such as tomatoes? Or, would buckets made from other kinds of plastics such as PET, PETE, or PP be safer for food storage? While shopping on the Internet, manufacturers' literature's for HDPE buckets say the items "meets FDA requirements." What exactly are the FDA's requirements with regards to HDPE-made buckets? I have asked a manufacturer, and searched the FDA's Web site http://www.fda.gov/default.htm for an explanation without success.

Is Alumisol Soft Plastic food safe?

I'm looking to cast a fake monster tongue out of Alumisol Soft Plastic (Plastisol) for a costume. Obviously it will end up going in my mouth. I can't find any information anywhere about the food-safety of the solid compound. What I gather from the msds sheet is that it's non-toxic, but it's a little ambiguous. The retailer I asked couldn't find any information either. From what I can tell it's usually used to create soft rubber fishing lures, so I'd assume it's environmentally friendly with respect to not releasing toxins into the water, and its listed uses include special effects as well as medical reproductions (Of tissue). Has anyone used this type of plastisol in contact with food or the surface of your mouth before? All help is appreciated.

How to fix Food Saver - Vacuum Sealer? Answered

I have a Food Saver brand Vacuum Sealer, that all of a sudden stopped working properly. It has no On-Off switch. You simply plug it in, and then put the bag up to the vacuum area and then press down and hold the lid when its vacuuming the air out and then seals the bag closed. When it stopped working, a vacuum bag was placed (as we normally would) and then the lid was put down and pressed. The motor is still running, but normally it makes a louder noise as its vacuuming the air out, and this time it didn't work. (No vacuum). Since it wouldn't vacuum the air, it then wouldn't also seal the bag.  I checked the single air hole on the unit, and there isn't anything obstructing the flow of air, and the bag was put properly in the machine. I also tried using a new bag (just in case the other one was defective) but it made no difference. All the bags come off a large roll. You seal one end, fill it, and then vacuum the air and finally it seals. I've been using this machine for several years with no issues, and this isn't a new roll of bags. Any ideas on what to do to service it and hopefully get it working again?

Herbs and Spices use??

How do you use different herbs and spices in cooking and baking?  I think I need to word this differently, since what I am really looking for is the Taste from different Herbs and spices, since I do know the difference and some basics.  What I want to know is the Taste they may impart to the food I am preparing, such as Red Pepper tends to make things hot, Parsley tends to give things a sort of "lemony flavor", Cinnamon adds some sweetness and helps enhance the sweetness of some foods.  The particular spices and herbs I want to know about are Tarragon, Cumin, Thyme, Saffron, Marjoram,Corriander and Cardamon.  These are spices I want to try, but am not sure exactly what they do for the taste of food, and which foods they are best used in and how much!?!

How toxic is smoking food with wine barrel wood which are all treated with linseed oil ?

I was told that its toxic to smoke food with wine barrel wood because its treated with linseed oil to make them waterproof and to keep contamination from going thru the wood. Ive searched all over the internet but cant find any info on the health effects of the smoke. I see many people selling this wood and I have tried it for smoking food but don't want to sell something that's harmful to eat. Any for sure info as it could be a legal problem for me. Chow. Lance

How to keep FLIES away from your food!

I discovered this little "trick" (quite by accident) when I was grilling last week.  Flies do not like onions!  A few slices of raw, sliced red onion in the immediate vicinity of your food will keep disgusting flies from dining on your edibles. Onions are so effective, I'm tempted to make a pair of hoop earrings out of 'em!   Maybe onion perfume? oh, the possibilities! ;-D
