Annual 1000 Best Instructables Compilation/Book/PDF

Greets. I think it would be a wonderful idea to an Annual 1000 Best Instructables Compilation book in PDF format (and perhaps in actual hardback as well). I think it would make a fun and amazing compilation - and would be very unique DIY/projects book to read. Please keep the PDF version free.

All my HTML disappeared

I noticed that everything I've done in HTML has disappeared from all of my Instructables!!! These are several featured and 1st/grand prize winning Instructables that I custom formatted in HTML for best effect. Can you please restore them? Will re-activating my Pro membership automatically restore them? If not, can you please restore it for me from a database backup or something?

Title in Primary Images

Dear Instructables Authors, Does anyone find the current trend of putting the title of an ible in the primary image as visually offending as I do? The format of the site puts the title right below the image in a concise and legible manner that doesn't interfere with the image of the project. Why clutter your image with unnecessary (often poorly chosen) typography? Please stop. Sincerely, Aesthetically Repulsed

Working on my Masters Thesis

Hello! I’m currently working on my Masters at Simon Fraser University, in the SIAT department. As part of my graduate research, I’m looking into the structure, content, and presentation of DIY tutorials. To do this, I’ve taken one very well-known DIY tutorial, and converted it into twelve unique formats. I’m hoping to have as many experienced DIY tutorial authors look though the modified tutorials I’ve made; then try imagining using them as formats for presenting projects they’ve made in the past, or are thinking of making in the future; and once that’s done, getting their feedback. If you’re interested in participating, I’ll give you access to the tutorials for a week, so you can look though them and get acquainted with each. At the end of the week, I will send you an online form with a couple of questions relating to your preferences, opinions, and overall thoughts of those tutorials. If you’re interested or have any questions please feel free to ask. Thank you very much! -Matthew

When will PM formatting be fixed?

Private messages, whether written by hand or generated by Robot, get completely stripped of their line breaks.  A message which is sent out reading, Instructables member XXX just sent you a patch! You can read the message, below, and then click through to your Profile to see the patch itself. --------------------------------------- You're a YYYY... ... so does the patch make you cringe? (If the animation works...) --------------------------------------- etc. What gets received and displayed in my I'bles mailbox is Instructables member XXX just sent you a patch! You can read the message, below, and then click through to your Profile to see the patch itself. --------------------------------------- You're a YYYY... ... so does the patch make you cringe? (If the animation works...) --------------------------------------- etc. Notice the lack of any line breaks. I know this is an active irritation, especially for Staff (who must deal with more PMs than any individual I'bles member).  I'm curious as to whether the underlying cause is even known, and whether there's any estimate on when a fix might be rolled out.

Revised The new format on a members page gives a bare hint of Best Answers. There are some of us who enjoy helping others and keep bragging score in exchange. That germinated a thought at least one considered worthy of the forum. Why not make it a soft-switch the user can activate by them for their page ? Like that age thing we lie about..... A

Are there an instructable to show me what I am doing wrong? I am using a newer Mac. Are the pictures in the wrong format I was able to choose files . when I hit upload, nothing seemed to happen and the library was empty. The text I entered vanished into the unknown.

New interface for comments editor

Last night, Rachel rolled out a new version of the comments editor.  It's supposed to be faster and easier to use (no more pull-down formatting for paid users, for example, just buttons). One nice new feature is that you don't have to wait for all the buttons to load if you're just typing plain text.  The back end is still the same HTML-based CKEditor as before.

Quick Question about Batteries

I'm sure this is a really simple question, but I'm still new to all this electricity stuff. If I had two D batteries in a battery pack formation, so I'm drawing current from both of them, if the wire coming off the positive doesn't connect to anything else, and neither does the negative, will the batteries drain faster than they would if they were just sitting there? Here's a (cruddy) diagram.

I need help

Hi everybody. I've been trying to unbrick my sony PSP, but I'm having a little snag mid-way through. I push X to install firmware 3.71, it begins the installation, says "Formatting Flash0...", and then it shuts off. Does anybody know why it is shutting off rather than continuing with the installation? The pandora battery is fully charged. Help would be much appreciated.

WHY DID YOU CHANGE?!?

Why did you change what was good? This new site is awful! I see pics with no idea of what I'm looking at because the titles and brief descriptions are gone. I can't even hover and get a mouse over text. BTW - the pages don't format right in my OS / Browser combo - couldn't you have tested this first? This was a great site that needed no tweaking. Sad, so very sad....

instructables hack: image-grid project browsing index

If you noticed the slideshow project index uses a grid of big thumbnails to let you view the projects. you can use this for regular instructables too! try these links:https://www.instructables.com/tag/type:id/?layout=imageshttps://www.instructables.com/tag/type:id/?sort=RECENT&layout;=imagesthe secret is the 'layout=images' bit, appending that to any of the 'explore' url's will show it in the new format.

A couple of sweet new features

There's a couple of cool new things we just released that you should check out. There's now a tool bar above most of the text boxes that will help you remember the special formatting characters used to modify text. Just highlight the text and go: bold, italics, typed, bolditalics, links, and video, oh my! (Make sure the triple brackets for typed and the text you want formatted that way are all on seperate lines.)Currenly we support embedded video from Google, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Just drop the URL of the video into the Video URL. The default view on the explore page is now a selection of random Instructables. It refreshes about every 10 minutes, so hopefully you'll see a few awesome Instructables you've never seen before.I've managed to find some really great people to help out with the site, so soon we'll be able to start giving you the features you want (I really do read everything in the bugs section!). So, keep your great suggestions coming.

Disapearing Instructables?

When an author retracts an instructable does it automatically remove that instructable from your favorites, and all posts made on that article as well? I had one such favorite that I was SURE was there and when I went back this week it was gone. I also posted questions to the author and I can't seem to find those either. My browser history was lost when I formatted my computer so I was hoping there was a way to track it down on the instructables site. Any hints?

College Interview Resume' Help

Hey Instructablers, I have an interview this coming tuesday for MIT, and my EC told me to bring a resume/activities list. My school has this funky format for writing a "resume," but I'm not sure if I should follow it. I've included my school's resume/activities list. Thanks, -Muffin P.S. Anyone else applying to school now? We could help each other out with essays and stuff like that ;)

Looking for a reason that my PS2 game CD won't play anymore - (isn't scratched at all)

"User1877" I just can't figure it out... I need tech-assistance on why my PS2 game won't run anymore.  Details: 1). It's not scratched, but when I put it in the game system...; 2). The "PlayStation 2" Bios Screen comes up -- then nothing after that... just a black screen.  3). Also: I hear the CD game spinning - at which I've tried "fast disc speed" and letting it play at Normal Disc Speed, too; only to find out it's going to do the same thing every time.  The name of the game is "Shadow The Hedgehog".  That game was originally out on the Nintendo GameCube in the mini-disc format; but, then in 2005 - it came out in the PS2 3" format.*  So - (Question: What do I do)?  Providing the details, what can be done - (do I have to buy another copy of the game, or can it be restored, somehow?)  Someone - please, tell me.

2 Years!

Not that anyone cares, but I just realized that I've been a member of Instructables for 2 years now! It's been a while since I've written a completely self-serving post and I just thought this was a personal event worth noting. So.... how long have you all been members? P.S. I haven't been on here too much recently, but I'm liking the new editor. P.P.S. It's easy to do crazy formatting!

No active partition error

I decided to try ubuntu on the p2, and each time I tried to install it, it got up to the root file system mount process, it stalls out, on both the 6.06 and 7.04 version. Now I can't even boot off the cd, it just fails at the cd boot and gives me a "Not found any [active partition] in HDD" then says " Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" I found this rather puzzleing as I just formated the disk on another computer and it's fine.

Import from doc, markdown support, and tables

First of all, I want to say that overall, writing my Instructable was a pleasant experience. While I do have some suggestions, I enjoyed the process and felt that the site worked pretty well to allow me to build a good set of instructions. Kudos! I'm sure it's probably been suggested before or I could be missing something with the editor, but I would like to see a way to import from a word doc. I wrote up a lot of the details in a word document before writing my Instructable, and if I were able to import that directly it would have saved a lot of time. I was able to copy and paste, but it removed much of the formatting and I had to reformat sections. It would also be really awesome to be able to copy and paste markdown formatted text into the step instructions. Markdown is used by a lot of sites / software including github, thingiverse, confluence, and jira to name a few I know of off the top of my head. Finally, I really wanted tables in some of the steps to make lists of tools and parts cleaner / easier to read. If tables are supported, I wasn't sure how to create them.

Request for Feature: Optional and nested quoting (a la e-mail, Usenet)

This probably would require substantial rewriting of the comment-handling software, but I might as well toss it out for discussion. Could the "Reply" feature for PM, topics, and I'bles comments have the ability to optionally do formatted quoting? I have in mind the classic Usenet and e-mail system: Joe L. User wrote: > Jane Newbie wrote: >> GodOfVMS wrote: >>> Why do we need lowercase commands? >> i like lowercase; it reminds me of e.e. cummings. What's a command? > CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME GET MY CAPS LOCK KEY UNSTUCK?????? Sure! On the front of your computer, find the button with a circle and line, (|). Press it.With long postings, or when you're replying to multiple comments someone has made, being able to interlace what they said with what you're writing can be very convenient. Some people (Kiteman especially) do this by hand, applying boldface or italic markup to distinguish the layers of markup. I try to do it in a more narrative way, e.g., On Sep 16, 2008, you wrote, "Some stupid newbie announcement." Did you really mean to say that, or were you doing a self-colonoscopy?I wonder if formatted quoting could be done automatically by the backend?

add to group (FT option)

Hey guys, I used to have the ability under FT options to add an Instructable I was viewing directly to a group I was part of (button was located where 'add to guide' option is now). This ability did not require the author of the Instructable I was viewing to acknowledge the addition or for them to be part of the group. Since guide publishing was rolled out, this option seems to have disappeared. Has this happened to anyone else, is this the new format, has this ability been removed? Input? Reformatting bugs

I just published an instructable but I'm dismayed to see the autoformatting has made it look pretty rotten. Steps 2 & 3 have wide aspect ratio images and they have been cropped and rendered in very low quality. The autoplay youtube function (where you can make a youtube video look like a gif) no longer works and the aspect ratio chosen seems to be ignored, so you get the black bars even when you do hit play. Any chance this cropping/breaking can be fixed? Thanks.

Music playback with breadboard.

Hello all. I want to create a simple music playback device. I wanted to be able to program a couple simple songs (MIDI format?) and when it receives an infrared signal, it begins to play through small speaker (small enough to hear about 10 ft. away). I was thinking this could be done through a breadboard. I am familiar with using breadboards but everything else I will need explained well. I appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

device to read volume level in a room

I was just thinking that something like this might be handy for a teacher. If you had some device that could read the volume level in the classroom and display it in a bar format so the students know when they are getting too loud. It'd be nice to be able to say, "ok, you can talk with your group but stay under volume 5" or "if you keep it below volume 3, you'll get more marbles". Anyone know if this could be done and how?

Help us help others.

In the new format, it is pretty tough to find actual questions. We get actual questions and topics mixed together with things like:"Kindly Could you please mail me the schematic?Thank you for sending" This is addressed solely to the author of a specific -ible. It's a lot of fun to help those people who dont know where to start on their project. But it is almost impossible to find those in the sea of responses to specific -ibles.Please consider fixing this so we can help folks who dont know "how to"thx

UTF-8 Bugs

Adding extended UTF-8 characters to Instructables works the first time, but if I edit the page, the editor replaces them all with broken characters instead. I have to manually edit all the characters back before hitting save, or the broken characters are propagated to the web. The characters that I have tried are capital omega (Ω) and the degree sign (°), and I plan to use lower-case mu (μ) in the future. Also, the bug posting form seems to be much more broken in this regard.

Can Anybody Top this Crazy Green Idea?

What is it? it's the side view of a solar peaking plant. With PV panels on the roof of a giant structure that would produce liquid air during periods of low demand, and augmented by solar work like a big energy storehouse that would be called upon during peak demand. During peak demand the liquid air would be vented into the atmosphere, causing it to snow in the desert in the summer.  It could also cause the formation of a permanent snowpack downwind of its' location.

Any recommendations for/against PDF to Word converters?

I need to convert an existing PDF (LaTeX source) document into MS Word format. A simple Google search (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q;=convert+pdf+to+word) brings up a number of options, both Web based and installable. Having never done this before, I have no sense of good, bad, dangerous, crappy, whatever.I'd very much appreciate input from any experts who have done this before (Jake?), especially Macophiles.

can't get video to work -- am I daft?

For the life of me I can't get the video to display in this instructable -  https://www.instructables.com/id/Claw-Machine-Picker-Upper/ I both tried both the "embed video icon" and inserting directly into source. I also tried the you tube option to use the old embed format, tried https... I also came back latter and tried again. Maybe I have tried too many things....   Maybe there is an actual problem? Maybe it is just me? I dont know...

Color Conversion

So, I was recently playing my 3ds, when I figured out that the firmware I downloaded, "Luma", can take screenshots. However, there is one problem. The program which takes the screenshots assumes that the 3ds is using 22 bit colors, when it is actually using 16 bit colors So, the image's colors are quite distorted. This is a problem. However, this shouldn't be impossible to fix, right? If I'm correct, we should be able to do the correct conversion as long as it was saved in a lossless format. Are there any programs which do this?

A Screen capture software that can export to Quicktime (.mov) !?

Need CNC router service to cut linoleum.

I've been having a hard time finding this and I was hoping you guys could help. I live in the Boston area, and I need a CNC service to cut some linoleum for linoprints.  I can provide the files in any format needed pretty much. But I need someplace that can cut up to 36"x36" sheets down to a depth of 1/16th - 1/8th of an inch.  Anyone know of a service that will do this?  I can provide material. In fact I prefer it.  Thanks.
