Request for Feature: Optional and nested quoting (a la e-mail, Usenet)

This probably would require substantial rewriting of the comment-handling software, but I might as well toss it out for discussion. Could the "Reply" feature for PM, topics, and I'bles comments have the ability to optionally do formatted quoting? I have in mind the classic Usenet and e-mail system: Joe L. User wrote: > Jane Newbie wrote: >> GodOfVMS wrote: >>> Why do we need lowercase commands? >> i like lowercase; it reminds me of e.e. cummings. What's a command? > CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME GET MY CAPS LOCK KEY UNSTUCK?????? Sure! On the front of your computer, find the button with a circle and line, (|). Press it.With long postings, or when you're replying to multiple comments someone has made, being able to interlace what they said with what you're writing can be very convenient. Some people (Kiteman especially) do this by hand, applying boldface or italic markup to distinguish the layers of markup. I try to do it in a more narrative way, e.g., On Sep 16, 2008, you wrote, "Some stupid newbie announcement." Did you really mean to say that, or were you doing a self-colonoscopy?I wonder if formatted quoting could be done automatically by the backend?

Import from doc, markdown support, and tables

First of all, I want to say that overall, writing my Instructable was a pleasant experience. While I do have some suggestions, I enjoyed the process and felt that the site worked pretty well to allow me to build a good set of instructions. Kudos! I'm sure it's probably been suggested before or I could be missing something with the editor, but I would like to see a way to import from a word doc. I wrote up a lot of the details in a word document before writing my Instructable, and if I were able to import that directly it would have saved a lot of time. I was able to copy and paste, but it removed much of the formatting and I had to reformat sections. It would also be really awesome to be able to copy and paste markdown formatted text into the step instructions. Markdown is used by a lot of sites / software including github, thingiverse, confluence, and jira to name a few I know of off the top of my head. Finally, I really wanted tables in some of the steps to make lists of tools and parts cleaner / easier to read. If tables are supported, I wasn't sure how to create them.

add to group (FT option)

Hey guys, I used to have the ability under FT options to add an Instructable I was viewing directly to a group I was part of (button was located where 'add to guide' option is now). This ability did not require the author of the Instructable I was viewing to acknowledge the addition or for them to be part of the group. Since guide publishing was rolled out, this option seems to have disappeared. Has this happened to anyone else, is this the new format, has this ability been removed? Input? Music playback with breadboard.

Hello all. I want to create a simple music playback device. I wanted to be able to program a couple simple songs (MIDI format?) and when it receives an infrared signal, it begins to play through small speaker (small enough to hear about 10 ft. away). I was thinking this could be done through a breadboard. I am familiar with using breadboards but everything else I will need explained well. I appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

Can Anybody Top this Crazy Green Idea?

What is it? it's the side view of a solar peaking plant. With PV panels on the roof of a giant structure that would produce liquid air during periods of low demand, and augmented by solar work like a big energy storehouse that would be called upon during peak demand. During peak demand the liquid air would be vented into the atmosphere, causing it to snow in the desert in the summer.  It could also cause the formation of a permanent snowpack downwind of its' location.

Any recommendations for/against PDF to Word converters?

I need to convert an existing PDF (LaTeX source) document into MS Word format. A simple Google search (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q;=convert+pdf+to+word) brings up a number of options, both Web based and installable. Having never done this before, I have no sense of good, bad, dangerous, crappy, whatever.I'd very much appreciate input from any experts who have done this before (Jake?), especially Macophiles.

Help us help others.

In the new format, it is pretty tough to find actual questions. We get actual questions and topics mixed together with things like:"Kindly Could you please mail me the schematic?Thank you for sending" This is addressed solely to the author of a specific -ible. It's a lot of fun to help those people who dont know where to start on their project. But it is almost impossible to find those in the sea of responses to specific -ibles.Please consider fixing this so we can help folks who dont know "how to"thx

By the nature of my work, I have to prepare daily reports in MS Word format.

But the last time I unsuccessfully edited the report directly on the flash drive, and this led to a terrible problem for me and my work. Now the interface shows me only about the error when opening. There is nothing more to do with the document. It is important for me to solve the problem earlier than technical support will do. I need lost information to continue working without loss of business reputation.

If you are good at playing with ipad, would you like to provide me a link to operate it? Thanks.

Reformatting bugs

I just published an instructable but I'm dismayed to see the autoformatting has made it look pretty rotten. Steps 2 & 3 have wide aspect ratio images and they have been cropped and rendered in very low quality. The autoplay youtube function (where you can make a youtube video look like a gif) no longer works and the aspect ratio chosen seems to be ignored, so you get the black bars even when you do hit play. Any chance this cropping/breaking can be fixed? Thanks.

My camcorder is DVD based, and encodes into MPEG-2 format.  the quality is poorer than the previous model owned by me, a tape based camcorder with same specs. the difference is the storage media, and the villain is the compression. Now i need the uncompressed video, i don mind the size of resultant file.jus give me a way to raep it in full! i read somewhere that uncompressed vid is passed on to LCD viewfinder.

device to read volume level in a room

I was just thinking that something like this might be handy for a teacher. If you had some device that could read the volume level in the classroom and display it in a bar format so the students know when they are getting too loud. It'd be nice to be able to say, "ok, you can talk with your group but stay under volume 5" or "if you keep it below volume 3, you'll get more marbles". Anyone know if this could be done and how?

UTF-8 Bugs

Adding extended UTF-8 characters to Instructables works the first time, but if I edit the page, the editor replaces them all with broken characters instead. I have to manually edit all the characters back before hitting save, or the broken characters are propagated to the web. The characters that I have tried are capital omega (Ω) and the degree sign (°), and I plan to use lower-case mu (μ) in the future. Also, the bug posting form seems to be much more broken in this regard.

Are you sick and tired of Windows Vista? Answered

Like I said I am frustrated with Windows Vista. I am to the point of formatting the whole drive and just run Linux on it. Windows Vista can't find updates. It is too slow. It freezes constantly. Never finds drivers for the hardware that I have. It asks for your permission for almost everything it does. I can't install the software that I want. Color Conversion

So, I was recently playing my 3ds, when I figured out that the firmware I downloaded, "Luma", can take screenshots. However, there is one problem. The program which takes the screenshots assumes that the 3ds is using 22 bit colors, when it is actually using 16 bit colors So, the image's colors are quite distorted. This is a problem. However, this shouldn't be impossible to fix, right? If I'm correct, we should be able to do the correct conversion as long as it was saved in a lossless format. Are there any programs which do this?

Embed SWF

A few years ago I did a project that was in the Instructables format. The only thing is that it's a SWF file and I wanted to embed it into my instructable. I've added it to my file library but it will only show up as an attachment. I know I can upload as a slideshow or video, but the project has it's own navigation. The link to the actual content I'd like to put up is here. The only question I really have is if I can embed this swf directly to page 1 of the instructable so that the navigation is intact and still functional. Thanks for any help!

betacup - $10,000 prize for innovative ideas for coffee cup waste reduction

58 billion paper coffee cups are thrown away, unrecycled, each year. The betacup challenge is an effort to reduce this waste. betacup are inviting people to submit ideas but also to comment and rate others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with other betacup community members and contest jurors. Thought I'd post this as there are a lot of smart thinking, clever, innovative people here at instructables. Hopefully one of us (or several?) can come up with something positive. Betacup from the betacup on Vimeo. You should consider: Waste Reduction – how does the Idea reduce the number of non-recycled coffee cups thrown away each year? Resources Required – what resources will it take to implement the Idea? (money, energy, water, materials, time, etc) New or Existing Capabilities – does the Idea use existing technologies or approaches? If not, what must be created or invented to implement the Idea? The Whole experience – Don’t forget the importance of the “whole experience”. Alternatives to paper cups are available today but they are not being widely used. How effective is the Idea likely to be in achieving its goal? A different contest format (hint: we’re encouraging collaboration) The betacup differs from most contest formats, because it is open. We are using jovoto, so when you submit an idea, your ideas are open to the public for comment and ratings. betacup via Treehugger

Dremel Tips/Tricks

Hi, I just got my Dremel yesterday (multipro 285 for £20) it ROCKS but I thought it would be good to have a forum topic for people to post tips/tricks about using their Dremel that they have pivked up/ made up.Mine is this (Its in pdf format) but basically it is a way to use you dremel to quickly "Desolder" pcbs (~5 minutes or less per board!). Wht you do is put on a coarse (~60 grit) sanding drum and go over the back of the pcb. It is very dusty but afterwards the components just need a small pul with some pliars and your done.

Ideas on how to make this lamp?

Hey! I'm starting a new project, but don't really know ~where~ to start. Basically I'm trying to make a "crystal formation" style lamp. I want it to be quite large, and look as realistic as possible.  I'll attach some images of the shape I am going for. Anyway, I'm not sure how to start. If I was to use resin style molding, how could I achieve the crystal shape? Or would there be better ways?  I'm an amateur at this, so any advice would be wonderful! How would you guys do it? Thanks.

Anyone know what this is?

I just got hooked up with digital tv today, and www.wegener.com/PRODUCTS/STREAMING_MEDIA_DECODERS/SMD_515.php these are what they gave me for set top boxes. Little IPTV streaming boxes. I noticed there was a spare led labeled HD on the front, and upon further inspection, I found a ide connector and a power connector for a 3.5 inch hard disk. Normally my isp would want me to rent a different receiver for PVR functions, and additionally a lot more per reciever. This box can use a hard drive, but when I put one in, nothing happens when I plug it back in. Now apparently, from what I've read, my isp might have installed their own firmware onto the boxes, but I do not think that is the case, the menus look like the one's I've seen online. I expected for there to be an extra option pop up in the menu when I powered it on with a hard drive installed, but that was not the case... is it the format? I have a 40 gig in there (for a tester) formatted as fat32. What am I doing wrong here?? Oh yeah, and theres a screenshot I got off my tuner card, it only shows this "boot" screen when you unplug the power and plug it back in, otherwise when you switch it off, it seems to go into a "Soft-off" mode, and the hard disk I noticed also continues to spin after it's been turned off... I don't like that :S Anyways, I can't find anything online, so much as a quick reference manual on wegener's website, but it didn't provide anything useful, it vaguely mentioned the recording function, but nothing of installing a hard disk or setting it up. I assume there should be SOME kind of menu/setup I can get into to setup the hard drive/view more options other than the audio format and some other minor options I can currently see like menu appearance. I'm super fascinated to see if I can get a hard drive actually functioning on here, like the remote even has a record button on it, so obviously it was meant to be a pvr, just they expect you to pay them out the nose for them to put one in for you.

Instructables image quality

Am I just imagining it, or did Instructables' thumbnail and preview images used to be much higher quality than they are now? Personally, I'm a fan of PNGs for their lossless compression, but I'm fine with lossy formats like JPEG as long as the quality is high enough that there isn't blatant distortion all over. But when I look at thumbnails and preview pictures on instructables now, I can't help but notice how crappy they look with all the distortion. My question is whether the decision to use low quality thumbs/previews was made in order to conserve disk space, reduce bandwidth, or improve load times?

How do I share 2 printers on a single ethernet jack that is hooked to an internal network?

Every office in my building has an ethernet jack. One room houses a HP laser printer that is currently utilizing the single jack. I'm putting a wide format color inkjet printer in the same room. I need to connect it to the internal network for others to share this printer as they do with the laser printer. There is a hub located in another part of the building that connects this intranet. To add my new printer is it a matter of plugging another hub into the existing jack and then plugging the two printers into the hub or is there another way? Thanks, Chas.
