Is there a way to prevent blowing a home fuse with another fuse? Answered

This is probably the dumbest question I've asked, and I know that me asking it and why I'm asking it is going to scare so many decent people. But I can ensure you that I'm taking appropriate safety measures when I do these kind of things. My questions is: I can either buy or easily build some sort of portable breaker box? I would like this box to be a sort of "test platform" of sorts, so I can make things that will plug into a 110 outlet (say a hotwire cutter) and if (for some reason) I do have a short somewhere, I will trip the test platform breaker, and not the fuse in my apartment.  Reason I ask is I work graves, and it hard for me to meet up with my landlord. meaning, if I blow a fuse (which my apartment still uses) I will have to go 10+ hours on average before I can get it replaced. Thanks in advance!

My tv keeps blowing fuses.

My tv (phillips crt widescreen) keeps blowing fuses. There must be some reason it keeps doing this, but I can't figure out why. I got it for free from a moving job because it didn't work (blown fuse), and then it worked for about 8 months just fine. Next fuse worked for about two months. And now it works for about five minutes before shutting off. But if I unplug it for a little while and wait, the tv will turn back on and have a picture for about five minutes. Any ideas?

Car charger FUSE melted - WHY ???

Hi ... could someone explain me, why may car charger FUSE has been melted down ??? I was using it several times, and suddenly I realised, that it doesn't work. So I have inspected the fuse, and the wire in the middle was completely melted - a lot of small drops. I have changed the use ... it worked 3 times and again. The next one as well. Unfortunately I can't tell you, if it stops work when the charger is in the socket and I start the engine or by having the engine already running and then trying to put the charger in the socket. I think, I did both of those situations ... but I'm not sure. But WHAT COULD CAUSE THE MELTING of the fuse, when before it was working OK ??? Thank you in advance, Zholy

How do I tell if my multimeter is dead?

I was trying to measure current, then voltage and - basically I had no idea what I was doing and soon everything returned zero. Opened it up, dont see the wire in the fuse anymore. It was rated 250ma 250v 5Ø 20mm. The shop I went to did not have it so I settled for a generic looking fuse rated at 250ma. The multimeter still shows 0 for all the batteries I've tried. Is it time to get a new meter or find a proper fuse?

Help identifying/replacing component

I'm trying to repair an iMac (Flat Panel) that has non-functioning USB ports. I've narrowed it down to this component, but can find no specs on it. I'm assuming it's an temperature/current protection component and appears to be in parallel with unused fuse pads. I'm wondering if I can get away with sticking a 2amp (it drives 3 ports) fuse in there and bypass the component. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mini fuse box question?

My headlights have stopped working - main beam is OK, sidelights are OK, normal dipped beam is out. Since both sides went at once, I'm assuming its a fuse. However, there are 24 fuses in the fuse box, none labelled with what they serve, and the Haynes manual simply gives them numbers. I'm being lazy - to save me going through them one by one, does anybody know which fuse is the one I need to change? (Rover Mini Mayfair, 1275cc, 1995)

Fuse Sheet Plastic to Wood

Not long ago, someone was lookin for solution to waterproofin wood box. Can't find it at the moment. Maybe someone else can find that thread. This could be done with multiple layers, and only  the lowest layer stapled to wood. Thus achieving strong bond to wood, yet no leak at staples since only 1 layer is punctured.

Water rocket plastic fusing

Hi, I'm a senior in a physics class.  We're currently building and launching water bottle rockets.  Our teacher told us of people that had tried to put two bottles together to increase the pressure they could build up, but said that they had failed because the pressure would leak from the point where they were joined.  Does anybody have ideas on how to make a water-tight double bottle rocket?  I had the idea to fuse the plastic together using heat, but I'm not sure how well this would work. This is my first post, so I'm hoping this is the right section to post in.  Thank you for any help and comments you could offer.

What is a good electric fuse company?

I have been told that different companies make different quality fuses, and that some are better than others. This makes perfect sense to me, but I don't know what companies to avoid and what companies I should go with. I am using these fuses for a Curtis 1243CAN-4276 motor controller (they have a datasheet and manual on their website, the manual has more info), and they ask for one high current and one low current fuse. I don't know the current draw yet, but once I get that value I will put it up here. In the mean time a wide range of fuse choices would be nice. Also a way to hold the fuses and bring them out to two wire ends for soldering is kind of mandatory.

Baby clothes quilt

I am about to endeavor to start making a quilt out of my children's baby clothes which are made of various fabrics, some of which are t-shirt fabric.  I have never made a quilt before and really have no clue.  I'm not thinking it will be perfect.  I'm thinking of making 5 x 5 inch pieces.  First question:  do you think 5x5 or 6x6 pieces are a good size?  Second question:  for the t-shirt material, do I cut the square first and THEN fuse it to make it more stable?  Or do I fuse first then cut into a square?  I know I need to put 1/2 inch on all sides for seams?  But still my main question is: cut then fuse, or fuse then cut?  And really, it only needs to be nice enough so that I can gaze at it when I am older and it is covering my old painful knees and reminisce about my children when they were young.  Thank you.

Project: bead printer

Hey everyone! My name is Michael and I have a project I'm working on: a fuse beads automatic "printer". After I got my mechanical eng. degree I was looking for a project to prove to myself it was worth it. I guess being a maker was my secret ambition, and I felt I needed some project to be proud of.  While babysitting my little cousins and doing some works with Perler beads, I thought to myself: hey! this is cool- I should try making something bigger! and so, as my works grew larger, I began to wonder- can I make it automatic?   What are fuse beads?  These are small beads made from plastic that come in various colors, and can melt under a regular home iron. Its a kids toy- you place a pattern on a mat, iron it- and get cool results. google it!   What is it supposed to do?  The idea is simple: place individual beads of various colors on a mat full of small spikes according to a pattern. sounds simple, doesn't it? I think its good to first look at a 2 color (black-white) simple scheme and try to print it on a small part of the board. Once the mechanical part is finished, the real programming will start.   Some numbers:  The beads are about 5[mm] in diameter and in height. A typical board is 30X30 spikes. A piece could usually contains 2-10 main colors.   !!STOP!!! Before you read my concept, I would like to know- how would you try to make this project? I have had this idea in my mind for over a year now, and I'm looking for new ideas.   The concept so far: As I've mentioned, its been a long journey already. I am far from having a working prototype and am open to suggestions. The "printer" I designed is similar to a CNC machine: a tube has 15 beads in it. The tube is moved above the board, placing the beads. Refill will be done manually since I wish to prove the mechanics first. I made the printer with Lego and an NXT controller and engines, simply because I had it at home. I tried making a 2 axis motion using a rack and gear (with transmission), moving a tube with beads in it. To my dread, the beads do not like falling off when placed on top of one another (in the tube), so I used a third engine, converting the rotary motion into linear one, applying a small force over the tube to prevent the beads from falling, moving them to the next position, than letting go. I discovered the engines are not as accurate as I would have wanted, and the results are meh. I will add some pictures at a later time as I need to re-assemble it.     Thanks a lot for reading, and I hope we can make this dream come true- lets have some fun!

Well, it's the third time I've blown a fuse trying to fix my PC I made. Any ideas on how to stop this? Alternate power? Answered

I took apart an old PC, salvaged each and every piece, now I'm trying to put it all back together again. I finally managed to make (what I think should be) a PC... But I turn it on, and the little red-light on the motherboard goes on, but the screen says "No signal", soooo I fiddle with some wires, turn it back on, and "POOOF! DIRRRrrrr...." Blown a fuse, the whole house is dead. My family screams in annoyance because it's the third time I've done it ;-) So any ideas on how to stop this? Maybe an alternate-power generator (Not that I have one, mind you)?

Will a steel wool strain run between a 9 volt battery be able to ignite certain materials?

I am working on using a 9 volt batery if not larger run through wires to aligator clips with steel wool pinched in the clips. I am using it for fireworks. I would like to know if the quick glow of the steel wool would be enough to ignite 2 different materials before it burns out. These materials are 1. Gunpowder Fuse 2. Aerosol hair spray (rather safe then sorry on the potato cannon for test usage)... I am debating wether or not i need that with a primer to make a longer last heat. If so, any suggestions on what kind of primer and how to secure it to the steel wool grain? I have tested the 9 volt running to the steel wool and it does glow and burn itself out but it does not seem to last long or even enough to ignite a paper towel.

what do i need to do to use sparkler fountain black powder in a homemade fuse?

Hi, a fireworks sparkler fountain that i had lying around in my room has dropped its contents as the base clay stuff crumbled away, and what i was left with was a paper case full of fountain powder. the kind of fountain is the kkind that is it a paper tube like normal fireworks, but make a spray of sparks fames and colours of the ground, not a sparkler stick, now sparkler fountain powder isnt like gun powder, this stuff burns slowly, probably because it has less oxidizer. what i need to know, is what i should do to the powder to make it suitable to use as normal black powder when making a fuse using dextrin in the proportions 10/1. i have access to a large amount of potassium nitrate, do i perhaps need to add more of it to the sparkler powder.

How do I get my car radio back working? Answered

In my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup, the radio isn't working. The antenna ran through the passenger door and one day, the exposed wire in the antenna made contact with the door, immediately shuting off the radio. I am assuming it did this because the body of the truck is grounded by the battery. The antenna is no longer attached to the radio, however every once in a while the radio turns on but when I try to play a cassette or a CD it blinks on the screen and will shutdown anywhere from 30 sec. to 20 minutes later. If I don't try playing a cassette or CD, It will shutdown anywhere from 30 sec. to 20 minutes later. The radio generally shuts down when turning. Once, the truck was parked overnight and the next day, the radio read "8:30" telling me it had been on for either 8 or 20 hours. Recently, it has been not working at all, turning on maybe once a day. It is a radio with a cassette player, and then in the back there is a 5 disc CD changer. I checked every single fuse, and just in case replaced the "Radio" fuse, but still nothing. I also checked in the radio to see if there was an internal fuse, or one on the back of the radio, however I found nothing.   Help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Protecting my new power supply

I've got a 12vdc 500ma power supply that I'm using to trigger a few solid state relays. I'm also using the same power supply to provide input current to a little micro PLC (Automation Direct DL05). Both the relays and the PLC have a wide range of acceptable input voltages and their current requirements are about 15ma per channel at 12 volts. The count is 6 relays and 8 PLC inputs, if all are on thats about 210ma. I once killed a similar power supply by allowing the leads to touch and short-out. I would like to protect this power supply from the same fate by protecting it from short circuit. I thought about attaching a reisistor to the end of one lead and covering all but the outlet of the resistor with heat shrink tubing... problem is, it would have to be a big, bulky power resistor to handle the wattage. Is there a simple component available that will limit the current upon short circuit that I can place in series with my loads to protect the power supply? As I said, it doesn't have to be precise and it doesn't matter if it jerks the voltage around a little.
