Repurposing a Sonicare wireless charger into a Galaxy S3 charger- anyone tried that?

Hi All, I have a spare Sonicare Flexcare travel charger, which is used to wirelessly charge my toothbrush. I've tried to charge a Nexus phone with it, but it didn't charge - I think this can be for two reasons - some kind of incompatibility, or the distance was too high due to the little round bulge on the charger. Does anyone have an idea if this might work? I didn't want to remove the bulge before some inputs from the forum :-) To charge a Galaxy S3 I'd need an insert to stick to the battery, but that's cheap enough. Thanks, Daniel

What does the universe look like?

I watch these magnificent programs about the universe, so wonderfully explained by Morgan Freeman.  I am puzzled with one question.  How can the science predict the size of our galaxy in somewhat vivid details?  So, here is my analogy.  With the space technology at hand, taking a picture of our own galaxy is the same as taking a picture of the Empire State building from one of its balconies.  Can someone please elaborate on this subject. Thank you.

May the Fourth - Theme 3-course dinner

Last weekend I finally watched Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. So with May Fourth coming our way I decided I would cook a nice Star Wars themed 3-course dinner for me and my wife this Friday. The idea is just simple food, but made it looking like something linked to Star Wars. I've come up with some ideas, but more ideas are always welcome. Here's whats on the menu up to now:Appetizer - Galaxy carpaccio:Purple beetroot 'empty space' carpaccio with sesame seeds 'stars' and drops of balsamico 'black holes'Main course - Star Wars Episode IX: The Fast-Food Hero:Sweet 'C3PO'-tatoes / 'BB'-pot-'8'-oes'Han'-burger 'Solo'Grilled green asparagus 'light-sabers'Dessert - Cheese platter:May the Roquefort be with youRevenge of the SwissMozzarella Death StarBabybell star wars smileysSo what are your suggestions?

Galaxy .25 Full Metal Spring Airsoft Pistol

Hallo, I am considering getting the Galaxy .25 Full Metal Spring Airsoft Pistol from Shorty USA. I have a few questions, though. I was wondering if anyone actually has this gun. And if you do, what do you think, and do you know any mods to make it fire faster than the 170 F.P.S. that it does? My last question is; Does anyone know any other place to get it besides Shorty USA or eBay? Thanks.

H2G2 Anyone? (aka Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

Yes well, I was reading "The Salmon of Doubt", Douglas Adam's posthumously published work, and it kept giving me links to h2g2.com, so I figured I'd check it out. AS it turns out it seems alive and well, and I was wondering if any other Ibler's had accounts there.on another note I know it's a bit random but I don't think Arthur Dent, Trillian, Random, and Ford Prefect are dead... *sigh* I guess I will never know what fate befell them, what a bloody nasty cliffhanger, one that doesn't have a conclusion...

Don't forget your towel!

As some of you may know, May 25th is Towel Day in honor of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I'd like to see what clever uses can be found for towels.

Time-Lapse shows the beauty of the galaxy we live in.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS DSLR.This video made it painfully obvious what I need to be doing with it!This gorgeous video is a compilation of shots taken with a Canon EOS-5D every 20 seconds over about nine hours at a star party in Fort Davis, Texas. It's a humbling sight. The Canon was equipped with a fisheye lens (an EF 15mm f/2.8 lens) and powered with an external battery to capture all that goodness. The more interesting part is the replacement anti-alias filter the photographer, William Castleman, used: The Canon's stock AA filter blocks out certain red wavelengths to achieve a "more desirable" skin tone, but if it's replaced with a filter that lets those wavelengths in, you've got yourself a camera capable of shooting a galaxy, as seen here, even if we can't see it with the naked eye.Its also great to know about the filter, I am off to google more into that now!Check it out on VimeoVia Gizmodo

Twenty years after Voyager

As discussed in Physics World today, it was twenty years ago (25 Aug 1989) that Voyager 2 completed its Grand Tour of the Solar System and headed off toward interstellar space. The two spacecraft are still active and collecting data as they approach the boundary (the heliopause) between our Solar System and the rest of the Galaxy.27 Aug 2009 minor update: Fixed name of Web site

Hitchhiker's Guide Typewriter for Sale

The typewriter that Douglas Adams used to type out The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is up for sale. If you have $25257.94 it can be yours! The price is converted from 12,250 British Pounds. To be honest, I was hoping that the seller would be able to fit the number 42 in the price somewhere. I would buy it, but there are the eating and sleeping in houses things that I've grown accustomed to. Linkvia bbgadgets

Digital Shower

I am planning and researching ideas on creating a DIY digital shower system.  The idea is to have an android device (Tablet, or old galaxy SII phone for now) installed along with an ardruino or some hardware interface to control the plumbing.  I would also like to use the android device for music weather etc. in the shower, but all that is built in. The only puzzle with the android device is getting it to interface with the hardware, and waterproofing it while still keeping the touchscreen functionality.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need help shutting down a computer with my phone

So, as a school prank, I want to find a way to shutdown my teachers' computers with my phone. I have the Galaxy S3 in case you need to know. I see there are things that allow me to do it with a software installed on their computer, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible. Are there any apps or programs I can use to find local computers nearby and simply shut them down? Any and all help is welcome. Thanks!

Uses for a dead smartphone?

Hey guys. New to all this disassembling/reassembling/making new stuff, please humor me. So I have this old Samsung Galaxy S Plus phone, which died in early 2014. And now, it's summer holidays, and I'm bored. I remembered this phone, and thought that maybe I could make something out of it. Is it possible to, say, take out the display, or the camera, and use it somewhere else? Maybe I could do something with the speaker? I tried searching on the internet, but didn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

Sci-Fi Gardening

I read an article on Dave's Garden a year ago on plants with Star Trek names, and I just adore the idea of having a science fiction themed garden.  Looking through some more plants, I've come across even more plants that would fit within a sci-fi/outer space theme. Coleus: Darth Vader Saturn Saturn's Rings Solar Flare Solar Shadow Solar Sunrise Vulcan Daylily: Alien Alien Contact Alien Encounter Alien Escape Pod Alien Invader Alien Landing Alien Skin Alien's Eye Android Android Dreams Andromeda Asteroid Astral Voyager Beam Me Up Beam Me Up, Scotty Ben Kirk Big Dipper Black Hole Borg Technology Cloaking Device First Officer's Log Galaxy Quest Klatuu Barata Nictu Life on Bajor Notify Ground Crew Photon Torpedo Romulan Deflector Spock's Ears Vulcan Logic Hosta:   Captain Kirk Enterprise Foxfire X Philes (just for fun) Galaxy Galaxy Light Gamma Ray Kiwi Milky Way Little Dipper Lunar Eclipse Lunar Orbit Lunar Sea Outer Space Saturn Starship Striker Super Nova Venus Voyager Vulcan These lists are not complete.  I looked through 5,320 daylily names out of 38,449 on Dave's Garden and then filled in with some names from the article, and I'm sure there are more genuses with sci-fi plants.  The reason why there are so many hostas, daylilies, and coleuses is because they're relatively easy to hybridize and propagate.  I started looking through African violets, but half-way through I was pretty sure I wouldn't find any.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were some more in the Liliaceae family such as with tulips, but phew, that's a lot of plants. Looking through some of the names, it would be relatively easy to do a Lord of the Rings or fantasy-themed garden.  I even found hostas called "Dot Com" and "Website".  Hybridizers certainly get creative when it comes to names.  I think I'll send my brother-in-law a hosta called "Twisted Sister". The image is of a basket plant I have.  No neat name, but it looks kinda sci-fi in the picture.

Android 4.4.2

Alrighty folks, its been a while since i've been in the instructables community.... I apologize for my absence. Anyways, on to my question. My mother and I both have Samsung Galaxy s3s with android 4.4.2, and I am able to set a new lock pin, change lock type, or even disable mine. She, however, cannot do so on her phone. I've looked myself, and it seems all other options for the lock screen are "grayed out" and unable to be selected. All we want to do is disable the lock screen on her phone. Anybody know why this is happening or what I can do to help her out?

ICE or Medical Alert App for Android.

Hi folks. Following some recent life changing events I find myself in the market for a reliable ICE or medical alert app. There are hundreds available & understandably looking at the various web pages they all claim to be brilliant at the job & the best ever of their genre, unfortunately the self promoting reports I have read so far are frankly about much use as a chocolate kettle. I need something that someone has actually used & an honest opinion of its reliability it would be even better if it has been used on a Samsung Galaxy S2 but any info about something that you have experience of would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. NG.

Miscounting View Counter

Recently, I have noticed the amount of "views" shown when I look at my instrucables is inconsistent. Let me provide some back-story... At my house, I use an HP desktop running Windows Vista. On this my family runs Internet Explorer 9. My Mother has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and she uses the most recent version of the Instructable's mobile app. I have a Samsung Galaxy Media Player 5.0 which also runs the Instructable's app. For those of you familiar with the new and updated app, you know that before selecting any instuctable you are able to see the number of "views" and "favorites" that item has attained. A few days ago I published another instructable. Being very excited to see how the community would react, I was checking the "views" frequently and noticed the numbers seemed odd. After further exploring the topic, I found that my personal device would show one number while my home computer ad my Mom's tablet also showed different. What I mean by this is the number of "views" before I selected my instructable on my device was different from when I clicked on it on the same device. It was also different for the tablet and the computer. I understand that as time goes on my "views" will increase, but these changes were ranging from 2,000 "views" to 4,000 "views". I don't know if this is a side-effect to me since I am the author of these instructables or if this would happen when I view other people's. I also don't know if this affects other attributes (i.e. Favorites, Comments, etc...) or if this happens exclusively with "views". I will keep my eyes open for relevant information and keep anyone interested posted for changes. I know this is not a major issue but it is indeed an inconvenience. If anyone else is experiencing the same problem please leave a comment so I know I'm not the only one. Also, to the people who take care of these bugs, please let me know if there is any more information that you need to help you out.   -mymyjames2000

Tiny portable printer - Will pay

Hello everyone. I need someone to come up with the plans or the finished product of a really small portable printer around the size of a Galaxy SII (or iPhone) but twice the height (thickness) at most. It must be able to print on a strip of paper about 2-6cm wide. It must be able to print a dot-matrix like text. The size of the text must be somewhat adjustable. It must print ASCII characters and maybe some symbols. The line of text to be printed will look like this: ID0001||25AUG{}12:55 No need for paper feeding or anything. It should operate like: place the paper in the tray, press a button/buttons, remove the paper. The ink should last for at least ten prints before replacing and the device must have a rechargeable battery. I would prefer if you make an instructable out of it as well but it is not mandatory. If you can deliver kindly send me a private message here with your offer.

Digitizer not working after replacement.

Hello, My wife accidentally crashed her phone digitizer (Samsung Galaxy Core 2 (G355H)). Its was still working, but you know... Being the type of man which always desire to fix something - I put myself to that mission. So I bought a new digitizer from one of eBay sellers. And sadly after replacing... the new digitizer was not working at all. Bringing back the old crashed digitizer to test it - it was still working. Tried to update firmware. Still the same. So I decided that It was faulty and asked for seller to resend the item. The new digitizer (number 2) came. Still the same stuff :(. Started to google. Found the solution on the internet. I have to let the phone boot with the old digitizer, when the boot is complete, need to remove the lcd and digitizer, replaced with the new digitizer (the phone has to stay on). And after that connected back the lcd... and its works... but sadly (as the author of this solution) if I reboot the phone - will not work again. PLEASE... Show me the direction what I need to do or where to search the answer

Geek Magnum Opus completed!

It is complete! My geek magnum opus, my meisterwerk, my... big long project that I conceived of several years ago while reading hackaday and thinking "I wish I were l33t enough to have something posted on hackaday"... it is finally complete. I was going to save the "big reveal" for completing an Instructable on it, but hell.. I'm really excited about it and so I'm going to give you a sneak preview. I have created a real world implementation of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's about as big as four mobile phones put together or a very small paperback book, weighs about 400 grams (under a pound for our friends in Liberia), runs on regular batteries, doesn't rely on having an internet connection- it's just the sum total of humanity's knowledge (ok that's a slight exaggeration), in your pocket. I'm annoyed that I missed the deadline for the pocket-sized competition by two weeks, because I think this one could have been a winner. Never mind. I still have my geek sense of achievement :) Watch out for an Instructable coming soon, where all will be revealed...

The I Could Make That Contest begins Monday, 7/29

You know you're a maker when you disdainfully pooh-pooh an off-the-shelf product and say, "Pffft, I could totally make one of those." A $2000 table made of 2x6s? That's a quick miter saw project. A funky knit Batman cowl for $50? Call me knit-picky, but that shouldn't be tough to duplicate. A $300 print dress from Anthro? Grab the Singer and get humming. An RFID door lock? Fire up the soldering iron and sketch out some code. Whether you saw it in a catalog, online, or in a shop, we want to reward your commitment to keeping things low-cost and self-reliant. You can make that, and now we're giving you another reason to try. Show us your best reverse-engineered, knocked-off, product-inspired copycat project to win the kinds of things you would be hard-pressed to make on your own: a Galaxy Nexus tablet or an Olympus digital camera. Check out the official contest page for more info! Keep in mind that no food will be allowed - we have a Copycat Recipes Contest coming up soon! Contest is open 7/29 - 10/21.

Bricobarts Beer Contest: what you need to know

Hi all! I'm glad, a bit, and proud, also a bit, to point your eyes to my beer contest. Me, the whole Instructables-team and a lot of beer-producing countries are looking for all of your craziest projects that use beer. The possibilities are numerous, the potential endless. Got a new way to produce? We want to learn! Got plans to export it to a galaxy far away? We want to know! Got a thirty-foot-tall Hagar statue in your garden? We want to see! There are a lot of awesome prices, also, but we all know that's just a tiny detail. So all this is just kind of good news. But, also this contest has it's dark side. That side is me. I won't be able to comment, encourage, burn or even judge from august 25th till september 5th, since I will spend some time in a region far from cell-phones & internet. I'll be far away from you physically, and I'll try my best to do it also mentally. No worries, I'll be back, and I'll find them, those awesome projects I was hoping for. Liking this contest is just not enough. Participate, if you dare! bb

An ode to bald men

When I was a child, in a galaxy far, far away, during the turbulent times of the 70's, my brother and I watched our little black and white Zenith® TV. I remember watching shows like Kojak, Columbo, The Streets of San Francisco, The Six Million Dollar Man, Police Woman, and many others. I also watched late night movies like Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven. Watching Telly Savalas and Yul Brynner with their manly bald look. Years later when I lost my mane I became inspired by these two actors that shaved their heads during those years. One day I decided to shave whatever little hair I had left and started to proudly show my shiny head. The first day my wife took a good look at me, told me that I looked "sexy". That is when I took her to the eye doctor for a new pair of glasses. I have been showing my baldness proudly for a number of years and I wonder if more of my Instructables brethren share my views. Remember: God made a few perfect heads and the rest He put hair on them.

Sugru Build Night at Makers Local 256!

Hey Makers and Breakers, Tinkerers and... uh, Thinkerers! Tyler here, from the Makers Local 256 hackerspace in Huntsville, Alabama! I just wanted to share some of the projects and ideas we toyed around with on our monthly build night for July. Our theme was Sugru, thanks to some kind gifts from Carley and the rest of the folks at Instructables; you guys rock! We had a few different projects that were worked on, so I'll start with the ones with Instructables attached first! My project was to modify an AppleTV remote so that it would stop sliding between the cushions of the couch, but decided to allow it to stand up on its own as well. The mod was quick and simple and is described in my Instructable here. Another member grabbed a couple of those spinny whirlygig handcopter toys and set out to combine them into a single, more powerful, machine! Those of you who knit know the annoyance of losing stitches when transporting your works in progress. DeathRogue decided that enough was enough and fashioned some knitting needle endcaps out of Sugru! We also had other little projects, including adding a Sugru kickstand to a Galaxy Note 2 for watching Netflix, building a wooden spindle using Sugru for the kickwheel, creating rubber Sugru feet for a Raspberry Pi case, and even practicing the ancient Japanese art of breaking and mending pottery pieces: Kintsugi! Check out our pictures of the event, and if you're ever in the North Alabama region, come check us out!

Unable to use photos in the library in multiple different steps

So I am working on an instructable where I have a few steps already in progress, and in a new step I wanted to use a photo from my library that I had already used in a previous step. I had done an in-image box w/ caption in the first step I used it in that appears when I add it to the new step. If I delete the comment in the picture in the new step, it also deletes the comment in the previous step the photo was used in. I'm not sure if this is unique to the way the photos are stored, in that the comment boxed are stored with the photo. I'd much rather be able to use photos twice in different steps when they have the same information in the photo but I'm zeroing in on a different aspect of the photo. Should I just upload two of the same photo with different file names to overcome this or is there a way to use a single photo in my library twice? I'm working on a 2009 Macbook Pro Model 5,3 with a 3.06 ghz processor, in the Chrome Web Browser version 26.0.1410.43. I don't have a current instructable draft where this can be reproduced unfortunately because I ended up just using a different photo to get the instructable published on time for a commitment to a forum. Although it behaves the same in using the old photo caption when I brought an old photo in the library into a new instructable (Helpful Preferences for LectureNotes on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1). I have attached a screenshot of an example image where it brought in the old comment to the new instructable. **Also is there a way to search the forum to find if this has been reported/asked before?? I'm very sorry if this is a repost as I couldn't search the forum itself.

Dance of the Scientists

So you think you can defend your research in front of a panel of experts? How about if you had to do it... with interpretive dance. No, this is not a joke. This is the first annual Dance Your Ph.D. Contest. Read this description and hit the link for videos of the dances....the diversity of the dancers was nothing compared with the diversity of their output. The graduate student category is a case in point. The first dance, Gruetzbauch's 30-second galactic tango, focused on one phenomenon: the capture of a galaxy by a larger one. Schraffl gave us raw data—a small scene from Il pittore parigino by Domenico Cimarosa—without analysis or metaphor. Sven Ramelow did a bit of both. His quantum physics Ph.D. title allowed him to make a play on words: The acronym SPUC is a homophone of a German word for ghost, and hence the scary sheet dance. Meanwhile, he used a laser light attached to his head to illustrate the strangely behaving photons he studies. (Very clever.) But then came Brian Stewart. No one was surprised when he scooped the prize. For one thing, Stewart wore nothing but a shimmering, translucent loin cloth. (That's worth a few bonus points in my book.) But the judges told me afterward that his dance stood out because it accomplished two things at once. Most importantly, "he connected with the audience," said Pastorini. "That is the purpose of dance: to create emotions." A big help was his choice of music a jazz interpretation of African Pygmy tribal music by Herbie Hancock which created an atmosphere of funky ancientness. Dance Your Ph.D. Contestvia Neatorama

Have we see the event horizon of the Galactic black hole?

A preprint submitted to the Astrophysical Journal (Ap.J.) last week makes a compelling case for conclusive observational evidence for an event horizon at the compact object Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Recent observations with mm radio waves have determined Sgr A*'s mass , distance and diameter (Nature 455, p.78), which make it "very likely" to be a black hole, unless there is some sort of exotic physics leading to a compact, but still extended and visible, object at that location. This new paper uses very general arguments from energy conservation and radiative efficiency to demonstrate that it is "impossible" for the object at Sgr A* to have a visible surface onto which accreting material collects and radiates. While the authors go through calculations in standard General Relativity for demonstration, their results hold much more broadly than that, covering any gravity theory which includes stationary solutions (i.e., horizons). If there is an object with a real surface at Sgr A*, then all the material falling in must either give up it's full potential energy into radiation as it is falling, or we should see a separate, thermal spectrum from the surface of the object itself. The Sgr A* spectrum is extremely non-thermal; any thermal component is less than 0.4% of the total luminosity we see. That is equivalent to saying that the accretion efficiency (how much radiation you get from the falling material) must be at least 99.6%, compared to the actual efficiency estimated at 0.01 to 1% for Sgr A*.On the other hand, a "horizon" by definition is a position in space "below" which photons just can't get out. Material can fall through a horizon with no difficulty, but we will never see it, or any radiation from it, again. Whether there is a black hole or some other exotic object inside the horizon, it is invisible. The accreting material's luminosity may well be "low" (as observed); the rest of its potential energy is "lost" to our observation when it falls through the horizon.

Black Holes aren’t Black they are Gray?

Ok so 40 years ago Stephen Hawking came up with the theory of Black holes and today they are not black but gray. It turns out that the black holes Hawking wrote about in 1974 — those places in the space-time continuum that can devour galaxies and even trap light forever — may not exist in the way that he proposed decades ago. So I read the paper. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.5761v1.pdf I found it a bit dry compared to A Brief History of Time but that is the life of a paper. I have always believed a theory is just that and no more, prone to evolve or be disproved with the advent of new theories and facts. After all it is just a theory and not a fact even though many of these theories enable us to the most amazing things. Which reminds me of a joke. A Canadian fisherman was down south fly fishing with an American fisherman that happen to be a marine biologist. Soon the Canadian fisherman caught a one pound brook trout and stated it was just a baby and threw it back. The American marine biologist not objecting to catch and release, objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. He explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. The Canadian fisherman retorted I catch five pounders in the Boyne River all the time and that was just a baby where he comes from. The American marine biologist objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. Again he explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. Not wanting to argue the Canadian fisherman let the subject lye and spent the rest of the day fishing throwing their catch back. At the end of the day they exchanged addresses and parted friends. A month later the American marine biologist received a parcel in the mail in it was a frozen five pound brook trout, distraught he began to write the Canadian fisherman a letter. “Dear Mr. Fuddel Duddel Thank you for the five pound specimen of the Salvelinus fontinalis, and thank you very much for ruining perfectly good science with a fact. Sincerely John Doe”
