Little Gem Amp Problem

Hi all I am quite new to electronics but I am very interested in it. I have built a couple circuits before but nothing with an IC chip. So now I have decided to move onto slightly more complex projects,  and I found the Little Gem Guitar Amp: http://www.runoffgroove.com/littlegem.html I have built it on a veroboard from these diagrams but I changed the layout slightly. Obviously everything is connected the same way I just moved the 100uF cap a little up. I have also added a 10Ohm resistor to the output and used headphones instead of the speaker. When I connect the 9V battery, without an audio source, I can hear is a soft buzz, quite a high frequency. The gain pot makes the noise louder and softer so I assume the LM386N-1 chip is fine. If I put my finger on the ground part of the 1/4 inch jack, the noise become much loader and lower frequency. The same thing happens if I connect an audio source. Is there an obvious cause for this problem that I don't know about? I have connected the jack to the board with shielded twin core wire. I have used the shield as ground and the core as signal. Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated, I would like to get this working.

Gamings Lost Gems

There are many games out there that have seemed to escape the public eye and has slipped under a sea of top-tier titles and remain unknown to many unfortunate gamers out there. I call upon the eccentric and the wise to cast their knowledge of lost gaming gems to those of us here, and let us have a few hours of gaming goodness. Remember that this is only for the lesser known titles, not the best or worst games. Thank you, and have fun.

halloween hand

Surfing around the internet today I stumbled upon this gem, looks like it would be well suited with some of the other ghoulish delights I've seen bouncing around Instructables. (it's meatloaf!) link

Little Gem Guitar Amp Questions

I recently went to build the Little Gem guitar amp from runoffgroove.com. Its a great little amp from what i have read. I made the basic heart of it so far. I have the four caps, resistor, IC socket, and its all connected. I think basically all thats on the breadboard for the PCB layout here: http://runoffgroove.com/littlegem.html(scroll down). I'm confused on where to put the two pots and connect power and all that. I don't have the gain pot yet, but i do have the 25 ohm rheostat. The rheostat has three prongs, would i use the middle leg for the "out" part and the other two for the other part? I can't seem to get it. Also, is there a common ground between the input from the guitar, the 9v battery, volume pot, and output? Help please!Update:I found a layout on Flickr that explains it, i think. See the third picture.

Greetings & Salutations...

Hi, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself before I jump into posting. I tried to find an appropriate thread with no luck, so here we are. I'm SaM HiLL and I live for hacking and modding and rock n roll. I've posted my first instructable, DIY Midi Continuous Controller Pedal and would appreciate any comments. Lots of great stuff buried on this site. Fortunately, I'm used to wading through crap up to my knees in search of gems :o) Look forward to meeting some of you.SaM HiLL

American Indians Action Figure

Ever see something so awesomely bad that you just had to own it? Earlier today, whilst browsing the isles of the local 99 cents store I came across an American Indians Action Figure set. I saw that there were a few normal (I use the term loosely) looking figures, but there was also this gem. For some reason the white guy of the set was depicted as some space age looking dude wielding a huge silver gun. I bought him, and one of the others (for strangeness comparison). I wonder who would win in a fight between the two.

PIZZA THURSDAYS!

Hey Everybody! Today is the day I decide to share this gem with you. Here at Instructables HQ, we often have pizza on Thursdays. It was initiated by Randofo's deep desire to keep his office companions happy and fed, and has evolved into a reason for me to make the following artworks. Each image is mailed out to the entire office as soon as the pizza delivery person arrives. Pizza Thursdays also lives on tumblr. Made on Mad's last day as an Artist-in-Residence. SelkeyMoonBeam and AmandaGhassaei playing Psycho Scooter Scramble   I will continue to generate sweet pizza art, every Thursday that we have pizza (and maybe forever). I will keep adding the new .gifs to the comments of this blog. Stay tuned.

Anyone remember this?

Hey there everyone! I was just going through some of my old stuff (trying to find loot for new projects), and I came across this gem. I got this for Christmas 25 years ago and I have held onto it for some reason. It wasn't until I started poking around this site and building again, that I realized why i have kept it. This it what got me interested in electronics.....well not really, I believe this was given to me to curb my random destruction of electronics around our house ;). So I want to say thank you to my dad, whom at the time saw an interest and tried to encourage it. So let me know if you remember this and if anyone still has one!

What not to do with your cell phone

I've seen a lot of people on forums saying that they droped their cell phone in the puddle or some other thing and went to get it replaced, saying that it just "Stopped" working (lying) and the won't replace it anyways. Well the reason is, there is a small round sticker in the battery compartment, right underneath the battery cover, where if it is dropped in water, it will definatly make contact. What this "sticker" does, is release a red dye when water touches it and turns the sticker dark red, I'm not sure if the dye stains the plastic or anything, but best not try. So when you take it into the phone store, they can check that and say "oh this shithead dropped his phone in the puddle, sorry, but we don't cover that". Just thought I'd share that and show you guys what it looked like. As used in the example, is my motorola v220 (doesn't have a lot of compatible software/games that I can find, but a nice gem to have). And yes that is a "Lupin the 3rd" background on my laptop.

VGA Video goggles/glasses on the cheap. i know its possible.

Ok,        i have been looking over the internet for a while now trying to get some sweet video goggles or a video headset like ipod video goggles but for my computer screen. the best i can come up with are in the range of $299.99 to $1K+. i was looking at the lady gaga video glasses tutorial and thought that i could hack the input on those tiny screens and slap a vga cable on it, glue it up with a set of gem magnifier glasses and be watching a video in no time. this is not easy, i don't know how to splice up the wires and connect them up, i don't know how bad this would be for your eyes and most importantly i don't know how to make my computer see this new VGA cable as a monitor. Anybody with the brains feel like mocking this up? i think it would be amazing if we could get this in. Id even be willing to guess a fast track to getting it working right would be with something like the usb desktop extender seen in the link below. http://www.walmart.com/ip/StarTech.com-USB2VGAE2-USB-VGA-External-Monitor-Video-Adapter/13215071?wmlspartner=GPA&sourceid;=44444444440261298289 Thanks!

I think it's the harmonica that does it for me, but the lyrics are exceptional, also. Many of you may remember the opening cut from all the radio play it got (their only song to make the charts), but that's not the only gem here. I give all ten tracks five stars, even "Facts About Cats."

Using the IRDA port on my toshiba satellite 2520cds

I got this old gem a month ago from a guy that recently and obviously needed a new one, but it worked this long surprisingly for power points. I must admit that it runs decently fast with xp and not having turned anything but system restore off. It's got a 333mhz amd 3D processor which I want to try upgrading with a k6 down the road as it IS removable. 96mb of ram and a lousy 4gig hd that slows the whole system down. But that is barely important. I had a swell idea of utilizing the irda port on the back for controlling it via a tv remote or any I might have kicking around which I have plenty of. Also, I wanted to be able to CONTROL my tv, vcr, dvd player, ect with it in itself aswell.Google didn't help me much this round as apparently there is software (which I did try) avalible but it's meant for home made or certain commercial infrared ports that plug in via serial, usb and perhaps parellel that I saw. I also saw a hint of what seems to be that the built in irda sensor in most laptops aren't able to receive commands from most remotes for learning or controlling it due to the filtered out bands. But they are supposedly capable of sending commands just fine. Now this is a OLD OLD laptop and there could be a chance that it can receive the commands too? Even still, you could pull it apart and modify the sensor to accept signals couldn't you? I'm looking for something to do with this laptop and this seems perfectly suitable for it as the screen is older and has that "motion blur" effect to it and so makes playing nes games a bit hard :-P. Sorry for the long post, but hey, if someone could help me with this, it would certainly make me happy.

Zeitgeist, Randomizer, Community Blog, and more!

We just released a bunch of sweet new features and added more cool stuff to the homepage. - Zeitgeist is originally a German expression that means "the spirit of the age", literally translated as "time (Zeit) spirit (Geist)". It describes the intellectual and cultural climate of an era. Our Zeitgeist sorting orders Instructables, Slideshows, and Videos by the most recent comments, so you can see what people are talking about right now! On the homepage, the Zeitgeist section shows featured Instructables with the most recent comments. Zeitgeist is essentially the way we've been sorting forum topics. - You can sort forum topics by "featured" or by total number of replies. Yes, Random fun is still in the lead.- Featured forum topics appear on the homepage forming our Community Blog. We're using the Community Blog to share stuff we find interesting that isn't necessarily related to Instructables. We'll post about local events, new really interesting research, cool websites, and anything else that we find captivating. If you've got something you'd like to share on the Community Blog, write a forum topic and ask us to feature it.- A captcha is now required to send personal messages. This will stop PM spammers dead in their tracks. Yes, Instructables has grown big enough that spammers are trying to PM large numbers of the community - this right of passage for our website makes me shed tears of joy - or something. - Your sorting options will now follow you around while you explore. On the explore page, if you click "recent" to see the latest items and then, for example, click a keyword, to drill down on a subject, or the Slideshow tab, to see Slideshows, that list will still be sorted by recent.- Clicking Randomizer will give your random results within your browsing category. Discover cool Instructables you've never seen before, or resurface old gems!- Finally, we improved the login process: Click the "login" link in the upper right, and you can log in right there on the same page. I'm having a lot of fun with Zeitgeist; let us know what new features you really like, and please report any bugs you find.

The best car ad ever made

A family member sent me this ad that was posted on craigslist, while it was the most explicit ad I've ever seen, I'd prefer this over any normal ad. Enjoy those who feel comfortable reading this. DISCLAIMER:  I bleeped (****) out any explicit words...... Though I could have missed s-something.  And explicit's definition is different between people Side note: If anyone thinks this is a tad (or more than a tad) over the top, PM me or reply saying so. I'll delete it. - - - If you think you'll be offended by this ad... DON'T READ IT.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - POS 1994 Honda Civic LX for sale - $600 (Marietta, GA) Date: 2010-07-11, 4:49PM EDT Reply to: sale-63pgj-1837513434@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] That's right, you can own a piece of shi... history right now for only $600. You may wonder why I didn't post a picture and that's because with a car this crappy, a photo is not needed. Just imagine the worst possible car and then picture a camel taking a dump in the trunk and you'll have a close approximation. You don't need to worry about me lying... it really is a POS. There is no risk of you getting over here and finding out it's really a gorgeous gem worth thousands... that doesn't happen...ever. But if for some reason that's actually happened to you, then you are acquainted with a crazy cosmic karma that has never thought to even piss in my face. I almost had a date on PlentyofFish and you know what happened? The f***ing AC died. For two years while I was not dating, it worked fine. The day after I get digits, the AC craps out. The car also has a weird hesitation problem that was not fixed even when I replaced the fuel filter. What could cause all of these things? Satan in the drive train...that's right... it's rare, but it happens to guys like me. This car is actually demon-possessed so you can forget about any sort of easy fix. Jesus said you need faith to cast out demons like this and believe me there are only two people on the planet that have that sort of faith. One guy lives in a cave in India and the other guy is dead. And you can forget about the guy in the cave helping you because, if you can find him, he's just going to tell you how physical setbacks are really spiritual blessings...blah blah blah...yada yada yada. Exactly. Don't expect sympathy from any motherf***er that sits around in his underwear in a cave. Other problems with this car include busted boots on the tie-rod ends, busted wheel hub boots, broken AC, leaking power steering system, ABS light always on, check-engine light comes on occasionally, driver window sometimes comes off the track, paint has permanent dirt in it (yes, it's f***ing permanent...you can't scrub it out with anything less than sandpaper or some highly explosive chemical that causes cancer in 49 states and erectile dysfunction in the 50th.) The car does drive, but that's about all it's good for. Good luck getting it to pass emissions. I've never tried as it's still registered in Clarke County. If you want to date, this car is probably not for you. On a positive note though, I can assure you no one has ever had sex in it. It would take a miracle to get a girl to even sit in this car, much less take her clothes off in it. Other possible uses for this car included entertainment at frat parties. You could charge people $5 a swing with a baseball bat, although you still probably wouldn't recover your investment. You might be able to sell it to the Mythbusters and get the to test the myth, "Is it possible that a car could really be this s***ty?" Adam Savage and Kari Byron will have a field day and close it off with "Myth f***ing confirmed" and a side comment from Kari about how whatever d*****bag use to own it must have never been laid. There are some positives like a beautiful Lumar 32% tint job, keyless entry with remote trunk release, an Alpine CD Player, and Pioneer speakers in the door. So at worst, you can sit in your driveway and listen to music with a bottle of Jergens and a picture of Eliza Dushku. I really wouldn't recommend taking it on the road until you replace the tie-rod ends. You might crash into a bus full of nuns and then the Pope will reign motherf***ing hail fire down on your betrodden a** with more fury than the inquisition because you actually decided to drive and be seen in such an amazing POS, killing 20 of his lovely Sisters. One other thing you might use this car would be pushing it off a cliff. If you've ever wanted to see what it's like first hand for a car to fall hundreds of feet and smash against rock, then here's your chance. Although don't be surprised if this demon-possessed sleigh from hell manages to f*** up your good time even in that bold scenario. I don't know how it would, but it would probably figure out a way. If there are any parents out there reading this, don't let your children fall into the situation I'm in. I would never have ended up with this car if I had pursued a real career. But instead I majored in math where the best job I can find now is up in Portland with a bunch of bran muffin eating hippies, jerking off Moose for 75 cents a smile for some wildlife conservation sperm bank. Let your kids do something with good with their future, like wait tables at Denny's. Oh yeah... it's white, 4 doors, and automatic. Whooptie-f***in-do!
