Animated GIFs

My cover image is a animated GIF and it works fine on a PC.  I tried to view my instructable on an iphone and ipad.    It doesn't animate at all on the Iphone app unless I click on the image.  It comes over as a fractured picture on the Ipad app.  Has anyone else had the same issue? Here is the project.    https://www.instructables.com/id/Trammel-of-Archimedes/

Not right GIF

You have probably all seen this before but, that's just not right... I can't stop looking at it. Not a bad loop sequence. Certainly confuses the brain.

Problem with putting a GIF into an Instructable.

Hello, I am wondering there is a bug ( or maybe I have just misunderstood something). I've successfully put a GIF into an Instructable before but this time I seem to be having a problem. It's a simple two frame GIF; I have just put it in,as I would a photo, but it does not animate in preview or full preview. I can't remember what I did before that may have been different. I even inserted it into one of my existing Instructable's as a test but to no avail. If I open the GIF in Safari it works. I made it in Photoshop CS3 and saved it optimised for the web but I am such a idiot-hole that there is probably something very simple that I have overlooked. Any advice ? Thank you. PS It's on  an unpublished Instructable draft page: http://https://www.instructables.com/id/E56EWRZHAVGK4PD/

Uploaded animated GIF to Instructables

I made an animated GIF size 500x528 and tried to upload it to Instructables, but it gets all screwed up upon upload. Is there a specific size I have to have it to upload? Tricks? Help!

How to make a GIF Player

Hello everybody, I was surfing the internet and I came across this beautiful idea! http://crapisgood.com/2011/11/the-animated-gif-exhibition-2/ There used to be a DIY tutorial on the website, but it's now gone, and I would love to make a gift looking like this to a friend, but I'm not very good in mechanics or electronics. Would any of you be able to explain me what I need to make something like this? Thanks a lot in advance!

The President Of the United States Is a Ninja

This morning I awoke to find Our president strewn about the news in a rather comical way: He had nearly been assassinated by shoes (joke) and I took some video using the technique from my recent instructable and converted it into a gif if you are going to use this on anything please make sure I'm mentioned, it's just common courtesy XD

Gif played after a click

Hi guys!It looks like there has been a new update on the site recently, and now we have to click on the gifs to see them. What do you think about this? Do you click on them? Or do you prefer the look at the pictures?I am wondering because I usually use a lot of gifs (sometimes 1 or more for each step), and maybe it is time to change this. So there are 3 possibilities:continue to load the gifs with the images (and click on them)replace the gifs with more images, and more detailsembed the gifs in the text, this way they automatically play once the page is open. What do you prefer?

Trouble uploading a GIF Image!

Well, I'm making an Instructable on Flash Animation. For the Intro, I want to put a GIF Image of an animation I made. While uploading the file, my computer froze up a couple of times. Everytime I see the Instructable, My comp freezes. The file is 1.44mb. I was wondering If its too big. And what other method can I use to show it. Perhaps a Youtube video?

Gifs just run once

On the drafts I am writing, I have noticed that the gifs I add run just once when I click on "Full preview". This is the case for the gifs added in the "regular" photo frame, but not for the gifs embed in the text (they are run in infinite loops). And I have the same problem with the last Instructable I have published (https://www.instructables.com/id/Universal-Arduino...), it looks like the gifs are played once then they stop.Is that a bug? I really like to add gifs to my articles to give a better overview of the project, but if they stop after few seconds or even less, I guess no one can see them...Thanks!

Steganography message in this gif image?

I'm working on a puzzle and there is a hidden message in this .gif.  I tried using a program called "Hide in Picture" to decode it but I haven't had any luck.  The password is Pluto.  Can anybody give me a hand? Here's the .gif: http://apairofpuzzlers.webs.com/GC1T4BF/shore.gif

Gif file won't play unless I click on it

I was wanting to put a gif file in my instructable, so I uploaded it, but then when I previewed my instructable it did not work unless I clicked on the image. I do not know if I am doing something incorrectly, or if now gifs do not work unless you click on the image. I don't think people will see the gif if this is true, since you have to go and click on the picture for you to actually see the gif play. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Animated GIFs only play if they're embedded in text

MacOS 10.12 Chrome 60.0.3112.113 (Official Build) (64-bit) If the GIF is embedded in the text of the step, it works fine. Examples: IOT Made Simple: Playing With the ESP32 on Arduino IDE (step 4 onward), Split Flap Display (intro and step 5) If the GIF is put in the image section of the step, though, it doesn't play and just looks like a still image. Examples: PIDDYBOT - DIY Arduino Balancing Robot (every step except 1), Making a Gif From Photos (intro and step 1) (Also, GIFs in Design Challenge entries' image sections seem to work fine. Example: Lab Centrifuge Fidget Spinner (second image)) I first tried opening the images in the lightbox, and also opening them in new tabs via the context menu—neither helped; the images were still static. I tried clearing the cache, because I found that suggested elsewhere for GIFs not playing in Chrome, and that did help, but only very slightly. Upon refreshing the page after clearing the cache (or upon shift-refreshing the page to bypass the cache), the GIF will play for less than a second and then reload and become a static image again. I also tried Incognito mode, with all extensions disabled, with exactly the same behavior (playing briefly only when loaded without the cache). I also downloaded one of the non-playing GIFs (from the image section of a step) and one of the working ones (embedded in the text) to my computer and opened them in Preview. The sidebar showed only one frame for the non-working one (and looked just as if I had opened a static JPEG image) and all of the frames for the working one. A screenshot of this is attached. This seems to me to indicate that the server is not sending the proper file (or is sending the proper file and then sending a bad file to replace it) when the image is in the image section. Steps to reproduce: I have no idea. AFAIK all I did was load the page and it was broken.

Breaking News: Gifs work in the NEWSLETTER!

Did you know that gifs work in our newsletter?  They do!  As long as they are the correct size which is 240 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall.  So if you like to make gifs for your projects, why not make a 240 by 200 one while you are at it!  If you want to see, just check out the Magnetic Tea Towels by mikeasaurus in the old Thursday January 30th newsletter.  If you save every one like I do :)

Would an animated avatar be annoying?

I was considering using an animated gif from one of my Instructables as an avatar but then thought it might be annoying.  What do you guys think?  Is there a policy on the avatars?  Gif below.  Feel free to tell me that people who use animated avatars should go drink castor oil. ;)

Using Gif on Burning Questions Contest

I am trying to submit my entry to the Burning Questions Contest and according to the contest's description, I should be able to use a .gif and that's good because that's all I have! But, I have tried adding the .gif directly to my post and using every single one of the "supported" websites for embedding but the Instructables website will not allow me to continue with an uploaded .gif and none of the supported embedding websites will allow me to upload a .gif as a video file either so I'm pretty much stuck. The contest description is misleading... Is there anything I can do?

Share Your Animations

I've been using Corel R.A.V.E for simple animations. I am an amateur at it, but I got simple creations out of it. But I wonder if there are other types of animation creators out there. I would like to see from the Instructables community some animations they made too. Post them here for everyone to see!

Robot having trouble resizing gifs?

I just noticed that the title gif for AndyGadget's Piecax the poltergeist has lost quality when resized by Robot. The large and medium ones which haven't been resized appear fine but the small and thumb ones have been degraded. I wonder if this is an issue for all gifs? I wouldn't know where to look for others, this one in my CD ible doesn't seem affected but it's just black and white unlike Andy's image which is more complicated. But then... I uploaded this one and it and it has the same problem. Where robot hasn't had to reduce the size it's fine, but when it resizes (small and thumb) some errors are introduced. (reported from test account so as not to spam subscribers)

giphoscope

I'm about to attempt to make one of these http://www.giphoscope.com/#!giphoscope/c1t44 . basically a hand cranked gif. i'm 3d printing most of it (because why not?). i'm fairly certain i've figured most of it out. the only thing i'm lacking is the actual GIF part. in my brain, for this to work, it seems to that the images of the gif in question would have to be somewhat modified to get the frames correctly on the thing.  my assumption is that since they're folding the image across a bar/pin then the bottom half of each card would actually need to be the bottom half of the next frame? this is exceptionally close to breaking my brain. if anyone can take a look at the images/gifs of thier thing in action and let me know what you think

Image Problems

Hey everyone, I just joined today. I was working on my first instructable, I tried to uplad an animated gif I made showing what it does. Well the gif is bugging out, and I can't figure out how to delete it from my library. So two questions: 1. Can animated gif's be uploaded somehow that won't mess them up? 2. How can I delete things from my library? PS: Is this the right place to post this?

What can I do with this digital picture frame? Answered

I have a digital picture frame keychain thing that was given to me a while back, and while it was in the original packaging(basically just a tiny box) it didnt come with a driver cd, and it doesnt seem to actually have a brand, therefor I cant find drivers anywhere for it. I've even let windows check online for a driver, but to no avail. so basically, as a picture frame, its useless. So I'm looking for something cool to do to it. I have included 4 pictures of it, and can upload photos of the circuits and such if needed. Thanks!!!!

AdblockPlus help- selective whitelisting?

I have a request that might sound a little strange. Does anyone know if it is possible (and if so, how) to set a blacklist within a whitelist on ABP? Context- I have whitelisted Instructables on adblock because the ad impressions I get help fund the site, but those bouncing flashing multi-coloured seizure inducing "You are the 999,999th visitor congratulations you WON!" adverts drive me to the brink of insanity. Can I, say, whitelist "all adverts on Instructables except GIFs"? Or have a blocking filter for "www.instructables.com/*.gif" that takes precedence over the whitelist?
