I was wondering if anyone knows if the same principles involved in nf119's instructable are applicable to attempting to electroplate something with gold. Also, would the pins of an old CPU (in this case, an old Athlon Thunderbird 1ghz) be made of pure gold that can be used to electroplate? Thanks!

I live near the site John Marshall discovered gold in 1848. There is gold dust and particles everywhere! Problem is that the gold is dust or fine powder form and the gold strongly adheres to it's surrounding ores. Panning is tedious and not effective. How can I separate the gold dust/powder from the other minerals? I have heard using Auger Regis is effective, but cannot find anything on how to use it, purchase it, or make it myself. Any suggestions/instructions on making or using auger regis; or any other more effective method of extracting the gold from the other minerals is greatly appreciated.

Based on the new "medal" system, I should now have a silver medal for having 10+ featured - I know I've seen this on other's profiles: https://www.instructables.com/community/May-2014-site-update-achievements-new-editor/ My 9th and 10th Instructables were just featured last week, so I'm not sure if there's some processing delay, or if this has to be done manually? Anyway, I demand immediate recognition in the form of fake internet medals! ...kidding, just thought I'd point this out in case it's supposed to be automated and there's a system-wide bug. If there's a delay or it has to be done manually by staff somehow, no big deal.

The mining of jewels is often inhumane, illegal and highly toxic. So think before you sparkle.Whether future heirloom or fun trinket, jewellery is one of life's luxurious pleasures. Even if you aren't decked out in multiple carats, a bit of bling can make you feel a million dollars. But the path your jewellery takes to reach your earlobe, neck, wrist or finger can be harrowing.Worldwide, the people - including about a million children - employed on minimal wages to mine and process supposedly legitimate diamonds, gemstones and precious metals often endure some of the worst working conditions imaginable. Toiling in Asian and African countries with little or no union support means health and safety precautions are slender at best. There's a serious risk of work-related death, injury or chronic illness as workers scratch out a living in remote mines extracting precious and semi-precious stones. This is just one article from the BBC's online magazine Thread, which I have not read before, mainly because "fashion" is not something I generally think about.Thread is the online fashion magazine dedicated to bringing you the latest in eco-fabulous style.Ethical fashion is fashion that has been made, worn and passed on in a way that looks after people, animals and the environment. The clothes we feature in Thread support this approach, making us essential viewing for fashion-conscious people who care about where their clothes come from. All clothes tick off at least one of these principles:Made and traded sustainablyMade of sustainable materialsRecycled or vintageThread shows you how to get the look you want in an eco-glam way through our unique mix of affordable fashion, exclusive videos, photo galleries and thought-provoking features.Link to full articleMagazine homepage.

So, I found this half-green gold fish in my box of whole-grain goldfish today. Looks to me like something I could sell on ebay as a religious symbol. I'm thinking of it as an ichthys (The fish that say Jesus inside them). What should I call it?What kind of story should I write about it? (What can I claim it is?)Which category on ebay should I put it in?Thanks!

I tried to use the Storm method of gold recovery, but found I didn't have enough precipitant. There isn't enough to warrant spending money (his prices) for more. Any ideas on what I can use to recover the gold from solution in a quart size jar? It's been sitting here for about 3 months, and I want it a done deal. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I'm starting jewellery making as a complete beginner and want to use Metal Clays to do this as it seems one of the easier and cheaper ways to make jewellery at home. I looked into lost wax casting, but there are no studios or workshops near where I live to do this. I really love gold jewellery, and was wondering that if I used bronze, copper, or silver clay, am I able to plate it too? I've seen those electroplating kits online, but I was wondering if it would work after I've finished making my jewellery piece with the clay. I've also seen videos about 'silver accenting' copper clay... Is this just basically like coloured base metal (costume jewellery), or is it real sterling silver (i.e high end costume jewellery). Any insight anyone can provide is very much appreciated! :) Erika

Hi. am finding a best solution for my design. look at drawing. there is 4 bars. about 2~3cm long each. their tip is holden on something in middle. when you pull up right black bar, right gold one will pulled down. "in same degree." when you pull down left gold bar, left black one will pulled up. "in same degree." likewise when you pull up two black bar, two gold bars will pulled down. "in same degree." its not just a normal hinge cause their move will interactive.15 degree up - 15 degree down. what can be a best (simple, durable, hard) solution?

In "For the Win", Cory Doctorow wrote about an exploitative on-line world where third-world sweatshops ran through online games to earn treasures to sell to Western gamers. These people were known as "gold farmers". Guess what? Up to 100,000 people in China and Vietnam are playing online games to gather gold and other items for sale to Western players, a report suggests. The global market for such virtual game goods is worth at least $3bn (£1.8bn) the World Bank study estimates. About 75% of that comes from so-called "gold farmers" who stockpile game currencies to sell on later. However, Encouraging these in-game services could aid development in many poorer countries, said the report. The high proportion of money from such sales that reaches those in the country where the work was done [23% to the individual] might mean that it could aid development in many nations, said the report which was co-commissioned by the World Bank and development organisation InfoDev. I have a vision for a project but am unsure what would be the best means of achieving it. When I was a kid, I had a bug collection. My grandfather found a perfectly preserved wasp in his garage and saved it for me in a plastic syrup bottle lid. Over the decades all my other insect specimens crumbled (I was a kid, so I just had them loose in a school box without proper mounts) but this wasp is STILL intact and perfect inside the syrup cap more than 20 years later! My grandfather was very special to me, and I was toying with the idea of somehow metal plating this wasp to turn it into a pendant. I have no experience with metal working and don't own the stuff to do it, but i'm open to purchasing materials if my goal even seems realistic. It is a fragile exoskeleton, which probably limits what I can do in terms of casting I have wondered about brush coating it with fiberglass resin (to strengthen it) and then painting it with gold leaf, but many of the faux gold leaf paints out there are pretty crappy looking. Fearing I might just end up destroying the wasp, I've also thought maybe I should just get a Ryker mount and hang him with the rest of my legit insect collection, though it is not posed properly and is likely waaaaaay too old to be re-relaxed for posing. If any experienced jewelry makers, gold leaders, or entomologists have thoughts on how to successfully gild this wasp (or why not to), I welcome your ideas! Thanks in advance.

I have been trying to vote for Rocking gold collection in the jewelry contest...but it doesn't seem to be registering. When I vote and later come to it...it shows it has not been voted..also when I checked in the jewelry contest...while the other stuff I have voted for shows...this is never appearing. I think it's rather unfair...and to think if others have voted and it's the same?? then this contestant doesn't stand a chance at all! what if it was a bug? then what will instructables team do to help rectify the unregistered votes? https://www.instructables.com/id/Rocking-Gold-Collection/ The above is the entry...check and let me know if it's only me or is it the same for others as well... My most treasured memory was the collection of books at school, they had pictures of Illuminated Letters. I am still facinated by the beautiful colours, the use of Gold and the complex intertwining of the illuminations. The next I can recall was Paisly. This too is an intertwining of colours and shapes. What about you?

It's my take on the Ice King's crown. For the "gold" part, I first tried gluing plastic paint buckets together, but they were too thin. I ended up covering the outside of one bucket in Bondo and then cutting in the peaks with a jeweler's saw. For the jewels, I cut a positive mold for each one out of a scrap of cutting board, then pressed them into clay to make a negative mold. Then I mixed up some casting resin and red dye and cast the jewels. They were epoxied onto the crown before I locked them in with Bondo bezels. If I were to do it again, I would use a more acute conic shape and make the peaks taller. I might also use fiberglass-reinforced Bondo and try a different gold paint. If I'm real adventurous I'll cast the thing out of scrap aluminum.

In hopes of seeing more paper airplanes and innovative designers on Instructables.com, I have decided to host a mini-contest. My goal is to stimulate the paper airplane channel and encourage more paper airplane builders to post their innovative designs. Performance Requirements: Entered paper airplanes must meet or exceed these requirements: Stability at all operation speeds A minimum range of 30 feet Durability to fly 30 feet or more after 15 flights Use of less than 15 pieces of tape in construction Use of less than 5 pieces of 8.5 by 11 inch (A4) paper in construction Prizes: For this contest I will award the publishers of the top 3 paper airplanes* one patch each. By default, these patches will be medals (1st place, Patch with Gold Medal image; 2nd Place, Patch with Silver Medal image; 3rd Place, Patch with Bronze Medal Image). If the winners of the patches would like a different image, there will be a 24 hour period between the announcement of the winners and the awarding of the patches. During this time, the user would need to send me a private message with their desired picture. *Multiple entries are allowed. To keep the distribution of patches wide, each entrant can only win one prize. How To Enter: To enter this contest, you must send me a private message with your instructable's URL included. I will then put the link and author's name onto a list on this topic as "Entries". Judging: For this contest, I have decided that I will judge all the planes myself based on abilities. I have decided this way because I believe judging on performance rather than shape is a more objective approach. The contest begins Friday, December 10, 2010 and end Monday, January 10, 2011. Entries must be published before Tuesday, January 4, 2011. From January 4 to January 10, I will be judging all entries. I will announce the winners of the contest on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 and issue them their prizes Wednesday, January 12, 2011. Entries: wat.: "Hammerhead Glider" (https://www.instructables.com/id/Hammerhead-Glider/) legoman111: "Blizzard" (https://www.instructables.com/id/the-blizzard-paper-airplane/)

As I type, Sir Jimmy Saville is lying in "state" in a golden* coffin in a Leeds hotel. According to his wishes, he will be buried at an angle of 45 in Scarborough, "so that he see the sea". What odd burial wishes do you have? Mine are simple - a cardboard box under an oak or horse-chestnut sapling. BBC Story. Just in case you don't know who Sir Jimmy was. *Golden, but not gold.

I think it would be nice to add another achievement option: Favorites (# of times people have clicked "favorite", all of them combined) For example: 100 Fav's (bronze-easiest), 1000 Fav's silver-(Harder) and, 50,000* Fav's (gold-Almost Impossible) * either 10,000 or 20,000, 50,000 I think these can be good

I'm hunting for fine, non-kink wire or conductive thread. It needs to be coated since I intend to twist two wires together, stripping the coating where I attach an LED. I like the silver/gold colors of the wire, so I want something clear coated. Or if anybody knows of a coating solution that I could apply to my wire/thread, that would work also. Thanks.

I am surprised that this is a featured instructable your team should review the instructable and consider removing it https://www.instructables.com/id/Gold-recovery/?&sort;=ACTIVE&limit;=40&offset;=40#DISCUSS First, it involves the use of chemicals that can be very dangerous to the persons and the environment. The author provides no instruction on how to protect either Second, at some point in the comment section a reader points out that the process is incomplete. He does so in a very matter of fact way. The author accuses the reader of attacking him and publishes the reader's name, the name's of his parents, the readers phone number and his address. Wait What!?! Seriously, IMHO this should get the author banished from Instructables. Thirds, Further down in the comments someone from "Africa" (not a Nigerian prince) makes a post stating that he represents a group selling gold bars in bulk for cash and provides information on how to contact him to make a purchase. At this point I stopped reading. I have been a subscriber of Instructables for some time now. I love the information, creativity and passion to build that it inspires. However, the fact that this particular Instructable has been FEATURED worries me that the community managers are not properly reviewing the articles that they are using to promote this community.

This video is a clip from Daft Punk's movie Electroma with a different song by them called Make Love.I find this clip very saddening. To get this jist of the movie watch the second clip (the video doesn't really start till 33 seconds in) and it has pretty good music! Basically the robot with the silver helmet wants to become human and the robot in the gold helmet is his best friend. They try and become human in a robot world. any thoughts?

I (and others) have made this comment several times, but now I'm posting it as a formal feature-change request. Please consider replacing the "PRO" badge with something more abstract. A little picture of Robot came to mind as one possibility, if gold stars aren't adequate. The "PRO" word itself seems to be pretty divisive, with many of the users who can't or won't pay taking offense. They seem to think that the paid users themselves are to blame for "lording it over" everyone else. This is obviously detrimental to the whole community here.

I purchased a set of crystal radio headphones on ebay which I wish to remod into working headphones. Instead of using the same cableing that is already on a set of regular headphones I wish to install in the old ones, I wish to solder new, thicker wireing onto the crystal radio cups and solder a new 3.55 mm gold jack onto the ends. To help you understand there are 2 good tutorials online , but they dont explain what type of new wire to get or how to solder a new jack on. I am not 100% sure what type of audio wire to purchase. All the wire I see at the electronics store is the red or black kind, with the one solid copper wire or the regular gold speaker wire.. but headphone wire is different because it has multiple colored strands that I need to twist into 3 for Left/Right/Ground https://www.instructables.com/id/vintage-wartime-radio-headphones/ and http://steampunkworkshop.com/g-headphones.shtml I like the look of re-wireing new cable to the outside of the cups, instead of just running the same cable straight through the cups. New, thicker wire will stand up better and the new jack would last longer as well. I was thinking wire between size 18-22 maybe?
