DIY mini heating element

I have a container (8cm by 8cm by cm) to store powdery food. But the food gets clumped together to the container walls. As such, I am thinking of coming up with a mini heating device to keep the container warm to prevent the clumping of the powder food. Am quite noob to this and would like to hear suggestions and ideas to come up with a simple diy device.

heating coil advice(resistance wire)

Hi, my name is david. im working on a project, for a device that is roughly .25-.5 inches long. im trying to find the right material resistance wire for the application. the components are submerged in coolant to maintain a low temperature. i wish to have a resistance wire of some kind wrapped around the components to heat them to about 90 degrees as quickly as a possibly can, for only a brief time(fractions of a second) i am using a variable power supply to determine my power needs. im hoping to be able to send a quick "signal" through the resistance wire, and use heat as a sort of input/output system. the internal components will melt at temperatures above 100 degrees.  so regulating the temperatures is key.  now obviously since they will be submerged in coolant, the resistance wire will need to heat to higher temperatures in order to heat the other components. ive been doing some research on nichrome and kanthal wire. but from what ive seen so far, it almost heats up to quickly, to higher temperatures than i require. it is hard for me to do the calculations, since i dont know how many watts/amps etc i will be using.  so to recap: temperature required about 90 degrees. (as quickly as possible, "flash heating" to 90degrees would be great) length is .25-.5 inch (the size will actualy be determined by the resistance wire i would prefer it to be as small as possible but i could make the module larger if i have to) variable power supply to determine my power needs(preferably the lowest possible power usage to conserve battery power) any suggestions on an appropriate material would be appreciated. i dont mind testing out different materials. i just dont want to spend thousands of dollars buying a little bit of everything and testing each one out one at a time. >< some experiments have suggesting silver coated nylon, but requires 20watts and a pretty sizable heating time. the heating coil will most likely have direct contact with the components, unless it is required to provide space between the coil and the components to heat it appropriately. i would prefer direct contact though to make the modules as compact as possible. currently the coolant is being pumped continuously through the whole system, but ive been working on plans for a valve to interupt the flow of the coolant during cycles where the coil is activated, if the need arises to keep the coolant from preventing the resistance wire from heating up appropriately.

workshop heating ideas.

Hello all, I have a slight problem, while designing my workshop for the winter months, I happened across a monumental problem... how am I going to heat it? As any Canadian reading this will know, our winters are not for the faint of heart (-50 anyone?), the structure I designed has a metal frame, HardiBacker lined inside and out as walls, screwed into the metal poles, fireproof spray foam insulation in between the cement board walls, it has been placed on a gravel surface, and is held to the ground by rebar that is nailed into the ground a few feet, and currently no ventilation. I know it has flaws left right and center, but I'm working with what i have right now, and I've got very little to work with. The structure is quite small 10' x 8' at 640sq. feet. Winter is on its way and I need ideas for heating. I've thought about wood heating but I'll need all the space I can get on the inside. propane heaters are quite expensive, and electric heaters.... well its out in the middle of a field basically. Im looking for something that can heat it up fairly quickly, and is safe, I made it fireproof so i guess a tiger torch isn't out of the question.....  Any suggestions are welcome! Cheers!

Heating for outside battery storage compartment.

I have an idea for a wind powered outside LED light for the family's cabin. It would be on a pole and illuminate the pathway, just like a street light would do. So I wanted to have a battery in a box with my wind turbine charging the battery through the day and night. The problem is, it gets really cold sometimes like -36F / -38C and that would kill the battery. So, I also wanted to include some really small, simple heater inside the box. I'm having problems finding anything on what would be the best way to go about this. Wikipedia says heaters are made by resisting current. Are there special types of resisters you add to your DC current to create heat? Thoughts, suggestions, feedback are all welcome. Thanks.

Need Advice on homemade Broiler

I'm making a 24"x24" vacuform machine. I have the base built but racking my brain for a cost effective heating source.  Is it possible to take a replacement broiler element for an electric stove and just solder a split extension cord to each side? Or better yet get an adjustable thermostat cord like one that would come with an electric skillet and use that? Is this a safe way to do this? The unit that would hold this, would be steel and wood to help radiant heat down plus keep anything or anyone getting burned. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

looking for well controlled heating element.

I have a few small projects in mind that have come to a standstill because I lack one piece.  What I would like to get my hands on are small heating elements capable of temps between 80-400 degrees F that are as accurate as possible, preferably within two degrees. I have tried researching this online, but after browsing for an hour I was unable to come up with anything that would suit my needs.  I have considered buying a digital heat gun, but I can't find reliable info on how accurate they are and what range they have. I don't want anyone to think I am trying to build bombs or anything like that so here are two of the applications I had in mind. The first is my truck.  From what I understand those 'super chips' people buy to override the computer and add power typically change the air/fuel ratio.  That can be done by manipulating the perceived temperature of the air entering the intake.  My idea is to create a small housing around the airbox thermostat and digitally manipulate the termp in order to manipulate the A/F ratio.  My second idea is...well...best not discussed openly, but I assure you it has nothing to do with the creation of weapons of any kind. Any thoughts?

heating water using the sun

Hi I want to install a hot water system, as cheap and simple as possible.  The best idea I have found is to connect a new pipe to the main storage tank, and run it the 70 metres to the house, overground, so the sun heats it.  This will work, but it needs a one-way valve at the tank end to stop the hot water entering the storage tank and heating that.  The normal plumbing valves for this need a high working pressure, but our supply has only 2 metres of head at the point of connection.  Anyone know how I can get round this? Heating box

Hi everybody First of all I want to excuse myself if my english is not perfect. I have a project in mind for a while. I work on construction in Canada and using caulking everyday it get hard to use it during winter if we don't have access to put them inside. So I wanted to build a little box with an heating system that could work on a jobsite generator. I'm thinking about a plywood box nothing fancy as long it work. I though about place 10 ABS/PVC tube that fit perfectly the caulking tube with alots of hole in it so the heat can pass throught it. So the caulking tube can be reached right from the top of the box and due to the hole it won't overheat. So that's the idea so far. What heating system should I use for this system(I don't want to spend alot on money). Maybe I'm thinking about  1 or 2 computer fan to make the heat uniform. I'm thinking about a space where I can put my spare glove to get them dry do you have an idea for that ? And finaly I'm open to any suggestion that can get the box even better ! :) Thanks you

Oil Central Heating - minimum amount Kerosene needed for testing it works

We have moved into a house with oil central heating that has not been used in at least 5 years and with no oil (Kerosene)at all in the tank.  We want to test if the boiler/oil burner actually works. Therefore we do not want to buy gallons of oil at the moment as we just want to test it to see if it works at all and then we can buy oil in the winter to save the expense now as it will not be in use now. A lot of companies have minimum orders however we were told we would just need a drum of oil in this instance to test it  - we are not sure if that would be enough. Is a drum of Kerosene enough? Where would we buy a drum of Keronsene?

Self-Flying Balloon

I have an idea to make a bunch of smallish balloons that have a LED sinside and small circuits that would control small heating elements to randomly change the density of the air inside the balloons, making them rise or fall. Just as a fun art project, making a bunch of them and letting them into a room for a party or something. A couple of issues I have: I'm having a hard time figuring out how to calculate the buoyancy, though that may have to come later once I decide on all the components. I don't want to use any lighter-than-air materials like Helium, just regular air heated up. I've been trying to find some small ceramic heaters, but I haven't had much luck. Ideally, something like this seems like it would work perfectly, but I need to find some that I can buy in quantities less than 20,000: http://cdsk.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008801115398/pdtl/Heating-element/1070197186/Surface-Heating-Elements.htm Whatever I choose would also need to heat up and cool down pretty quickly so the rising/falling would have a stronger effect. I might be asking too much here. I'd need the whole circuit to be pretty small and lightweight. If I use an Arduino Uno, could I just transplant the ATmega328 into the balloon? If I used a small watch battery, would that even provide enough juice to operate an LED and a heating element? Anything bigger seems like it would be too heavy. As for the casing, I plan on whipping something up in Blender and printing it out in lightweight plastic. It would have to hold the circuitry and be airtight to keep the balloon sealed. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Help reducing energy bills in rented house?

Hello! I have lived in the same house for the past two years, and in the winter our energy bills get ridiculous. It is an old house, the main part being built in 1902. We plan on doing the bubble-wrap window insulation on every window in the house and adding some weather stripping, wearing layers ourselves, and I plan on getting an electric blanket in my room to turn on just before I go to bed, and turn off once the bed is heated up. (My room is the only room on the 2nd floor and gets very cold. The previous tenant of this room used a space heater, but I think they are pretty inefficient.) Are there any other cheap ways to lower heating costs? They guy that owns our house is really stingy, and I highly doubt any requests for better insulation or a newer thermostat will be answered. Ever Repair a Electric Popcorn Kettle Before?

We have a popcorn machine at work.   The kettle died and I took it home to fix. I didn't know a ton about them before but after working on it it seems to mainly consist of a heating element, a thermostat and an in-line fuse. I replaced the fuse but each time I would turn the thing on it would cook one batch of popcorn (much faster than before and not as well) and then not be able to do another.  It seemed like the fuse was burning out.   I had replaced it with the same model number as before. So I replaced the thermostat too.   Still, the same thing happens.   I tried reversing the poles in case I put the wires back in backwards and didn't realize it, in case that mattered, but no effect. I adjusted the thermostat, both old and new turning them down and down by what should be 200 degrees in the end but was getting the same effect, like the thermostat wasn't the issue. Does anybody have any ideas what is going on here?   Is there maybe some inline resistor in the heating element I'll never be able to get to or see or something? Adding a picture.   The two white wires are power, the green is a ground.  There's nothing but wire beyond where they go.

What transformer would work well for a kerosene heater igniter?

I'm using a kerosene heater from time to time this winter and it has a built-in ignition glow coil that is powered by 2 C cell batteries.  I was thinking about wiring an AC transformer to it to power the ignition coil instead of using the batteries.  What range of voltages and mA might work correctly?  I have a 6v 600mA transformer on hand.  Might that work?  I don't want to burn the coil out by driving it too hard though.

selective room heating?

I just turned on the heat before going into my room to go to bed. My roommate and I are in about one fourth of the whole house (and will be for about six hours), yet every room is being heated. This seems like a huge efficiency problem. Are there commercial systems out there that can heat selective rooms? If not, are there ways of making such a system? Can I just tape cardboard over the vents?

Need a small 12v heat source for simulated HVAC project

Okay, so for our year end micro controller project we need to control a temperature inside two 2L pop bottles connnected together. We have a computer fan mounted at the end of the "heating bottle" which needs a heat source in it. The fan will blow the hot air from "heating bottle" into "temperature bottle" which contains an analog temperature sensor. We have to control a set reference temperature point in "temperature bottle" using a PIC16f690 microcontroller by manipulating the fan speed and heat ON/OFF. Problem: I need a decent heating source inside "heating bottle" . Ive been using 12v automotive lightbulbs which work great for a minute or two but then die out. My crappy power supply can only pump out 1 amp, could this be why? Any suggestions on what to use as a heat source? I was thinking some 5w resistors but classmates have said our power supplys cant handle them either. Thanks in advance!

Miniature oven

Please don't laugh but I am building a small working oven for my daughter and need a heating element that can heat it from 70 to 220 degrees celsius via a thermostat. Need Help With Battery Heating Elements!

I’m seeking advice on building a battery powered heating element, goal being 1300 degrees Fahrenheit.  I have a 4.8v 4200mah battery and Kanthal A-1 20, 26, 30 gauge wire, but am not limited to this material. Help making a heating pad

Hi folks, Essentially, I'm trying to make a heating pad and I'm becoming terrible confused. . . Let me start by offering some background on my project. I'm building a fermentation cabinet that will be cooled by a window A/C unit. The cabinet will be split into two halves. The first half, with the A/C unit, will be for lagering beer and cold conditioning. Temps will be around 40° F. The beer fermenting in the second half show be kept at about 60°-70° F.  The 120mm PC fan will turn on and blow cold air into the second chamber when the temperature drops below a set point. I would like to have heating belts wrapped around the containers in the second chamber to bring the heat of the liquid up when it drops too low. This is where I'm getting very confused. I'm basically an idiot when it comes to electrical work. . . I would like to use about 7' of 30 AWG Teflon coated copper wire as my heating element. I've calculated the resistance of the wire at .722 ohms (this is the part where you ought to start speaking up and correcting me). Can anyone help me figure out what type of resistor I would need to drop the voltage down enough to get a 20W heating element? I'm starting with 120V from the wall. Stay Warmer At Night

We keep a kind of chilly house in winter . Sweaters and sweatshirts are expected, except for company.  In our area, we heat and cook with natural gas and that is cheaper than electricity. But the cheapest heat is residual from cooking . So a kettle is always on for tea whenever wished. And most nights we bake potatoes unless the daughter bakes brownies or something. And, in addition to that we will stick bricks in the oven. Come bedtime, the bricks get wrapped up in towels and put in the bed. where toes can cling to the brick and other toes. Best strategy for bricks is to bake them at 175 for a couple of hours.  Please spare the obvious comments, but please make other homey suggestions.

How make round 5" air duct valves?

We moved into a large (for us) house, and we only use a few rooms. I managed to repair the furnace, but the first bill was astronomical. Beyond the leaking windows and lack of insulation, the problem is that, as it is, we have to heat the whole house. I've discovered a temporary method of blocking vent tubes to unused rooms (by stuffing the tube with a rag), but I want real valves. I've heard they are called air duct dampers.  My vents are on the ceiling aimed down.   So, I've seen these check-valve 5" ones https://goo.gl/8zRGLX but I haven't found any that would open and close manually.  But this doesn't seem like it would be difficult to make. I'm toying with the idea of using a cone-shaped "lid" with some kind of springy cord holding it in. Does anybody have any ideas?  How do I make a manual (or electrical solenoid, I suppose) operated valve for a 5-inch round air duct?

Innovative solar powered radiator - will it work?

Ok, so i live in a rented flat (apartment) in London UK. Its a small flat but its old and doesn't have a gas heating system so i'm stuck using expensive electricity especially as the windows are single glazed and winter is on the way! Brrrrr! I desperately need a cheap and effective heatsource Now I know solar water heaters can be suprisingly effective even in the cold and that got me thinking. I have a south facing garden. Couldn't I use the sun to heat the flat? Specifically, I was thinking, can I use a solar water heater to heat an insulated water tank, then use the tank to heat a radiator after dark? (See diagram below) Bear in mind in temperature during the day at the moment is 11 degrees. Will enough heat be generated to make the system viable? I.e. will the water heat the tank hot enough during the day to keep the room warmish for a evening? Other pressing questions: Do i need a commercial panel or will an instructables model work? Oil filled radiator or water filled? Will it auto-siphon or will i need a pump? cheers a million guys and gals!!!

Carburettor Heater - need help

Hi All, Hope this is in the right section. I am working on a project to heat the body of a carburettor (Bing 84) in order to prevent carb icing.  No commercial solution exists for my carburettor.  My engine (for paramotoring) is air cooled so can't use water from cooling system. My idea was to strip out the nichrome heating element from a car cigarette lighter and use that.  The heat needs to be applied to the metal casing of the carburettor, preferably being hottest near the air intake side of the carb.  I decided the best place was where the air filter is attached - a 12mm long metal throat with a 35mm diameter The trouble is, I don't know I can transfer the hundreds of degrees of temperature from the nichrome to the metal body of the carb without just shorting out the battery.  If I am to have a layer of insulation between the nichrome and the carburettor, what can I use that will conduct heat but not electrical current, and withstand around 300 degrees of heat?  I also thought about reducing the current and spreading the heating over a larger portion of the metal casing, which would allow the temperature to be lower. I have also been experimenting with motorbike hand grip heaters that run of 12v but they don't generate enough heat - I need to be pumping in around 8-10A as the internal cooling effect of the fuel vaporising rapidly causes sub zero conditions inside the carb even when the outside air temperature is well above freezing.  I have a 7Ah li-ion which I would only switch on when required (maybe have a latching push button on throttle control). It may not be doable but its an interesting project nonetheless and something I am going to play around with.  Any ideas? Thanks, Dug

Wood Stove feeding radiators

Hi, I'm hear again with a completely different question. Again, any help is greatly appreciated :) I installed a wood stove last year, and I'd like to install a coil to heat water and circulate it through my existing radiator loop. I was wondering if I could do it as in the image, I would install a new pump to circulate the water. I have a combination boiler, but I'm sure that doesn't really matter. The green circles in the diagram are to illustrate taps, that way I can close off the boiler when I have the stove on and vice versa.

Using TEC chips and heatsinks for personal cooling - heating collars or pads

I've been toying with using TEC chips (facinating devices that are cheap - applying voltage make one side hot - the other cold, Inversely, appling any existing temprature differential to the sinks PRODUCES POWER). They are used most commonly by consumers in auto beverage coolers and heaters. It  started when a car ran me down on my bike, and I was wearing a neck brace for months. I thought about how misserable I'd be if it were summertime. I also thought of those poor people that always wore them... Anyway, there's a thousand different easy ways to do this - I took fluid-filled plastic sections of a beverage cooler and attached them to a belt, which hangs around my neck. applied the heat  sink of the TEC and there you go - just wrap it in something. Now if I were on a motorcycle in summer and stopped in traffic, the cool collar would be a lifesaver, as well as a myriad of other apps. I cannot figure out the best (inexpensive) way to control this. It's easy enough to turn on and off - you can hardly forget it! But if I allow the chip to get too much wattage it will get too hot and self-destruct. Also, if I limit the wattage correctly, it would just need adjusting, and could be left on most of the time. The idea here is there are many ways to do this but they are too expensive... I want everyone to be able to afford it. If you use a Pot or resistor, the excess goes to heat and ruins battery life, and other controllers of DC current are expensive. Any help? I am almost 60 and have earned the nickname Misc. Expert among my family and friends, and I must say I'm very impressed with what y'all do here in this newsletter - Congrats!

Heat from heating pipe?

Hi there, is it possible to derivate the heat of the heating pipe of an heater to make a water circle (with a pump) to create ones own heater? Because i feel the heating pipe is extremely hot and it's heat for free, so why not using it? The idea is to build something like a water cooling system for the PC but just without the cooling. Can i wrap a cooper pipe around the heating pipe and let water circle with a pump, so the hot water  passes through the "new heater". I dont know what to use as heating object but there will be a way. Any ideas? Is it even possible? Thank you and sorry for my English :D

Keeping my equipment warm

Recently i went to take pictures in the middle of the night at Subfreezing temperatures and the front of my lens formed ice. so i need to keep the lens warm, there are many solutions but the one i thought would be fun to use is the use of a heating element. I found resistance heating wire, i would like to make an object that could fit around my lens and keep it warm. to prevent overheating i will use a microcontroller with temperature sensors to cut of the supply of electricity at a certain temperature. i just want to keep the lens at more than 5 degrees centigrade. I think my 12v lead acid battery will be enough for this kind of project. My question is how to do it, how much heating wire should i use? how much heat will it make? what wire should i use? Will it work? Any other ideas are welcome.

Dumb question. Have a heating plate that uses 1100 watts and runs on 120 volts ac. if 1100 watss / 120 volts = more or less 10amps, Could I safely use a 10 amp rated ssr aka solid state relay or use something higher.

Turbine generator with heat pump

I got another weird idea that I like to share as I don't see me putting into reality anytime soon but someone else might do it for me after reading it ;) If you like me and call home where it is far too hot for most of the year you might have wondered how to cut the energy bills down. Especially if you in a remote area "off the grid". Sounds interesting? Then just do me the favour of posting here if you plan to put into reality and keep us updated ;) Technology has come long way and with some mirror like Mylar foil anyone can build big reflectors to use the sun for heating all sorts of things. Modern solar hot water systems are designed to produce a temp high enough to kill all harmfull stuff that might otherwise grow in our system but we can one step further: (Keep in mind it is just an idea with no prototype to proofe the concept works as expected!) Using heat pipes in a round reflector that is linked to solar tracker would allow us to boil water for as long as the sun is out there. Don't know if the flat types used for hot water systems are capable of producing steam but someone might have an old one at hand and is willing to test it on a sunny day? Anyway, assuming we can build a large enough array of solar ovens heating water pipes it is possible to drive a turbine with the steam. A linked generator of suitable size would now provide the electricity we might need to charge batteries or to power other things. But of course this would be total waste of the remaining energy in the steam! Plus we could really need some airconditioner, don't we? So in my vision we don't want to waste the water either, which mean we not only use the heat but also reuse the water to go back into the solar oven. If we now use an uscaled version of our RV fridge and instead of a heating element or a flame our remaining heat from the steam we can power a big fridge and an airconditioner on the same continous-cycle-ammonia-fridge type to cool what we need. Depending on the size and insulation rating of a house it is possible to be totally independent from the power grid during the sunny times. During the winter times the same generator can be combined with a ducted heating system where the waste heat of it is used to produce the steam we need. Of course integrating this into one unit would be the prefered option to keep the physical dimensions small. Combine all this with some good sized battery backup and inverter system and you might have enough juice to spare to make it through a cloudy day or two. Add some wind generators if you are in a suitable area to provide additional electricty. I think with new parts and some handy work it should be possible to create such a system for under $3000US. With access to some well sorted scrap yards even for free, not counting consumables, selants and so on... Sadly I don't own a house and currently not even have a garage to set up a little workshop so for now it stays an idea only... Tried to find some sponsors or at least people with interest to create something like this down here but it is like trying to explain quantum physics to a hundred year old in the retirement village. Sure, you can build something that would give me electricity and cooling for free? ... Of course it will work, so come back and show me once you made it.... If that crap could work, why are still buying fridges that run on electricty and airconditioners that drain our bank accounts?... We have 5 cooling containers outside runningon generators that use over 200liters of fuel every day and come try to tell me a steam generator can cut me fuel bills down by at least 50% if not more?... Just some of the more friendlier responses I got after trying to find some interest. Don't know if it is problem of the Aussie mentality or if I am just unable to make someone understand that we can use the scorching sun for free :( But I am not willing to give up on the idea itself, so what do you think? Oh! You have the financial means and access to create some prototype to integrate into a new cool house or  self sustaining home? Please feel free to contact me so we can start and make a living out of it ;)

Collaberation Home Heating Effort

I'd like to start a collaborated effort for alternatives to heating a home for this winter. With the rising costs its all on our radar. Right now I'm looking at a solar air heater Solar Heater to make full instructions plus cost effective. I want to be able to do a water solar heater also but don't quite have the knowledge on getting something together. Possibly also other alternatives. Alternatives such as a permanent mount, portable, and all season benefit. Anyone up for it?

Induction Heating

High frequency induction heating is basically a very efficient way to heat ferrous metals. Induction heating uses an powerful magnetic field to induce currents within the surface of the metal being heated. This means that the coil will not get hot unless the material being heated transfers heat to it. Induction heating is very efficient because no heat is wasted, no heat is wasted because the coil does not produce heat, the heat comes from the workpiece being heated only.

Distribution of Solar Heated Water and Any Other Heated or Cooled Water

I started this project about a week ago after seeing the Instructable – https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-build-a-strikeheliostatstrike-paraboliI made mine out of cardboard and then coated the cardboard – front and back – with fiberglass resin for stiffness. I covered the inside with tinfoil to test it out and find the focal point. It worked great with the focal point at the center of the dish even with the lip of the curve. I then removed the tinfoil and replaced the tinfoil with mirrored Plexiglas. Now it works awesome. I have a 30� parabolic mirror that can ignite wood almost instantaneously at the focal point of the light.Next I constructed the heating coil to run water through. This is made from a large 1 Kg coffee can, 16’ of ¼� copper tubing with end fittings, and the glass lid of a small sauce pan (handle removed). The outside of the coffee can is painted flat black as is the copper pipe. The copper pipe is coiled to a coil 4� in diameter and 6� in length and inserted inside the can with the ends extending from the side of the can through two drilled holes. The inside of the can is not painted, but left shiny. The glass lid is then taped over the hole with aluminum metal tape covering a minimum amount of the glass – about 1/4� around the edge.The coffee can is then suspended over the mouth of the parabolic mirror by a three point 6� chimney pipe stand-off. The can’s mouth is centered at the focal point of the mirror so all of the light being reflected by the mirror must enter the coffee can. Hoses are hooked up to the copper pipe fittings and these lines go to the feed/storage tank.The problem with the conventional set up from here is that the speed the water moves at (slow) to be heated to a great degree causes such great loses through convection, this system is not really feasible. I propose a new idea – or a new twist on an old idea.I noticed that the solar heat generating station use a black water pipe inside a glass vacuum tube to generate heat from the sun for heating water. I said to myself that this is a great idea and plan on building the next heating coil in a vacuum chamber. But, I also came up with the idea that the if the water is heated in this manner, why can’t it be transferred to the storage tank in a similar manner.If the feed lines were suspended inside a larger outer line and the outer line sealed tight and vacuumed the heat transfer due to convection would be almost nil. I estimated that with a total convective area at 100% the use of plastic stand-offs (8 @1/8� thick over 12’) the convective area would be reduced to 0.6%. Unbelievable! Even if this rose to 5% it is far beyond anything in use today by the home owner. Stretches of pipe going 100s of meters would no longer be un-heard of. You could place the dish in a close by field away from the trees and house and pump the heat back without losing it to the ground.This would also work for outdoor wood furnaces if use today. An outer pipe could be added over the existing pipe work, sealed, and vacuumed – almost all heat lose would be gone. And much larger stretches of pipe could be used here also. They would no longer need one furnace for the barn and another for the house. With this system, the pipes could even be run above ground, if desired, in some cases.This could also be used to replace insulation on cooling lines also.The key to the system is minimal contact between the inside and outside lines, and the vacuum between the two lines. Remember, there is no transfer of heat through convention within a vacuum, because there is no air for the heat to transfer through.As with all the new ideas this could get costly depending on the scale of piping you are dealing with – but the savings from reduced heat lose will far out way these cost in the near future.I may get an Instructable out for the Energy efficiency contest, but will be hard pressed.

Heat Pump

Has anyone attempted building a homemade heat pump?  Maybe one used as a hot water heater only? What are the challenges that prevent a DIYer from building one from scratch?

How Often do you use heat shrink?

Just curious, I find that I use a lot of heat shrink when wiring. Its just so handy, I used to get through a lot of electric tape but heat shrink it easy & simple.

Vacuum forming heat source

Hi! I am planning to build a vacuum forming machine that does not use a seperate oven to heat the plastic. For my 3D printing hobby I have come across many heated beds, also some on 230v. Could something like this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/30X30CM-750W-220V-Silicone-Heater-3D-Printer-Heated-Bed-Pad-30cm-Thermistor/401257671771?hash=item5d6cd22c5b:g:iVEAAOSwx6pYrp70) with a heat sink be used for such an application? Computers Used to Heat Conservatory

Waste Heat to Be Used by Conservatory ------------------------- Heat generated by the Univ. of Notre Dame’s high-performance computing department is being used to heat a local greenhouse. The department has placed a containerized data center next to the Ella Morris and Muessel-Ellison Botanical Conservatories and Potawatomi Greenhouse in South Bend, Ind. The waste heat generated by working servers is piped into the greenhouse where it is used to keep succulents and other desert plants warm. CleanTechnica.com reports the university is expected to lower its equipment cooling costs by $100,000. The city will save $70,000 it spends to heat the conservatory. The use of the waste heat is part of the Botanical Society of South Bend’s plan to help make the greenhouses self-sufficient due to budget cuts. ------------------------------ Pretty smart. Heating element in hair dryer still ON

Hello, I have the hair dryer which have 2 switch one for the blower and other one for heating, when turn the blower ON the heating coil that connected to the rectifier terminal is work ON and the motor work in slow and high (not perfect working) . There is no short in out circuit . Sorry for mu english thanks

Does PC cooler's(FAN's) heatsink conducts electricity and heat?

I WOULD LIKE THAT IT CONDUCTS HEAT BUT NOW ELECTRICITY SO I CAN PUT helix in that that will be heater!!!
