Do featured posts on the homepage vary from account to account? I noticed this was the case when I logged into my secondary account, the featured posts on the homepage were completely different from the ones that show up when I log in with my usual account.

Hi All, The homepage of Instructables gets a big makeover today, you may have noticed! If you're logged out, you'll continue to see the same rotator with huge, beautiful images that you know and love. If you're logged in, you're going to see your customized feed (if available) or "top picks" (if not). Top picks are the same projects that appear on the logged-out version of the homepage, so if it's the variety of fun projects that keeps you coming for more, there should be nothing lost. We've had terrific feedback on the "feed" related features -- people love the personalization of Instructables, and come back for more when we're able to show them exactly what they came for in the first place. Now, we're dialing it to 11. We know the homepage is a big driver of traffic for many new projects, so there may be concerns that projects on the homepage will get fewer views. We don't anticipate this will be substantial, since most visitors to the homepage are logged out. We hope you like it!

Is there a reason that when I: Load the homepage Scroll down to the "featured/popular/recent" area Click on an instructable Read instructable (or not) Click BACK button The home page loads in my browser again at the "featured/popular/recent" area for a moment and then jumps back to the top of the page where the slideshow of the featured authors is at? Every other website, that I can think of, returns to the same portion of the page I was at when I click the BACK button. Now, I'm sure you guys are proud of your new, shiny, homepage. But...

First of all, I want to thank the staff member that clicked on that awesome button! Who doesn't love having their 'Ible get featured in the Homepage? But I have a couple questions: When my SpectrumLED Instructable got featured in the Newsletter, I got a 3-Month free PRO, And another 1 full year PRO. Now, When my LED Workshop Lighting 'Ible got featured, I got a free 1 full year PRO, But without the 3-Months. Why is this? Before you think I'm just greedy, I don't need these. I like giving away a free 3-Month PRO Membership to members that make my project and share pictures. I already have enough years of free PRO... ;) My second question is: Do all Instructables that get featured on the Homepage get featured in the Newsletter? And... My third: My Instructable was at the top right of the homepage, Meaning that it was the most recent one that got featured on the Homepage. It stayed like that for several hours, But then it got "covered" with 'Ibles that were featured before that on the Homepage. Aren't they supposed to move down to the bottom? About an hour after that, I refreshed it again, And it moved to a different place again. Are they supposed to be organized randomly like that?

As of recently, whenever I click on anything in instructables.com (a link to a guide, view all steps, links within the page, ect), the page will show up and then near immediately redirect to either the homepage or the Submit page! I'm not sure why it's doing it... I recorded a screencast since screenshots wouldn't help :) Thank you! (I can always upload this to youtube if it's preferred) The below is an example: I only refreshed the webpage once http://screenr.com/CoO8

I've just released some changes to the layout of the site. The home page is different; we're trying how things go if we sort by the top-level categories, if that helps people find things they're interested in more easily. We have also added the ability to allow authors to 'feature' comment threads on their Instructables. You'll see a checkbox by the bottom of each top-level comment marked "Feature Comment". Checking it will pull that comment and all its replies to the top of the comments, and keep them there (it will also close that thread to further replies so as not to be hijackable). We expect this to be used for threads that really add a lot to the Instructable, but which are in danger of becoming hidden on later comment pages as additional comments are made. Use sparingly! Also note that the rearrangement does require a page refresh; the thread won't pop to the top immediately. There are a couple other small layout changes as well, nothing too big. Also we've done a little work on contest management, which will help the admins do their work more easily but doesn't show for everyone else.

As you can see we've launched a new home page + new headers and footers! Please poke around, as the dust is still settling, please submit any bugs to the bugs forum. We will be doing bugfixes as we find things to fix. We hope you like the new layout! Gregg Horton Instructables.com

My poor pc is in trouble. I use XP. When i use internet explorer instead of my MSN and YAHOO page coming up i get this rubbish search engine called "searchme1000" coming up or one of those pesky ad things called "CELLDERADO::::" I am a bit of a low-tech guy but this has gone beyond a joke. I tried a website blocker but it does not work well. The offending software keeps trying. I hove Norton but it blithely lets the buggers in. the mouse is so angry he could...SQUEAK!!!

Come here and say what you think about the new home page. I think it's beautiful and simple but there are some small bugs. I'm having trouble posting replies on different threads. I love the new home page but if you could add text to the pictures that would be cool. I do want to thank people who created and designed the homepage for putting it here, I know it was a lot of hard work. (P.s. I'm running firefox 4.0 on Mac)

I was recently on another computer and want to find one of my instructables to show my friend. She wanted to print it quickly so I didn't log in. When I tried to find it under the Technology category it wasn't under the featured instructable. We found it instead on the homepage (the third page of the recently featured instructables). Later at home I tried it on my computer (on Firefox) and encountered the same problem. Can an instructable be featured on the homepage but not the category page? I was sure it was featured in both. Some screen shots are included below. Thanks (and sorry for bothering :)

AudreyObscura here, I have been the gal photographing most of the featured authors for the recent homepage re-design. I am encouraging YOU! YES, YOU! to help us keep our homepage exciting and fresh! We are seeking excellent images of the community's authors, but keep in mind we have a particular aesthetic we are seeking: Images of Authors working on their projects Portraits of Authors in their workspace (kitchens! studios! where ever you make stuff!) High-res, well lit images (2000 px on it's SHORTEST side) Land-scape orientation Strong compositions Excellent accompanying instructables I will continue to photograph local authors, and I'll keep the forum updated as I travel to other areas. I'll tell you where I'll be, and you let me know if you want a photo taken while I'm there. By no means should we limit ourselves to featuring just the authors that I am able to visit. So take great picture of yourself working on your projects, and we might just feature your work in our Homepage Rotator. If you want more information feel free to PM me and I will try and coach you through making great photos for the site. Please post your photos in the forum topic below :) YAY!!!!!!

Hey folks, You may have noticed the new look on our homepage and header - I just want to let you know there are more exciting changes coming! We try to do small site updates about every two weeks, and now that the development team is a bit bigger we'll be able to stick closer to that target schedule. The one constant in a healthy website is change, and our philosophy is to test and modify based on actual results: it's incremental, hypothesis-driven website design of both function and aesthetics. Lots of small, frequent changes help us evolve the site at a comfortable pace. So stay tuned for new features, design updates, bug fixes, and other good stuff coming your way! We'll keep working to make Instructables a better place to visit. Christy (and the rest of the Instructables team)

Posted it as a question first because I had trouble finding the bug page: https://www.instructables.com/answers/Anyone-having-trouble-opening-the-instructables-ho/ I've tried with FF4.0 and IE with no luck. No viruses, cookies enabled. I can access all of the pages I have tried *EXCEPT* the home page, no matter how I navigate there. I get the error "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

What's happened to the giant authors photos that used to appear on the homepage? Last time I saw them was a couple of days ago. What I see now is a big gray rectangle with a smaller contest banner in it (it changes everytime I refresh the page). Is this normal? If this is the way it should be, I apologize for posting this in the "Bugs" section! ps: I preferred the homepage with the moving photos! :)

The homepage no longer shows a background image behind the search bar. The search bar on the homepage doesn't show what I'm typing unless i highlight what i did type. And finally when i try searching for something the results page is full of nothingness where the thumbnails should be. This is a very annoying problem, i would like to search for the projects i want to as opposed to whatever is on the homepage. The site used to work perfectly on my computer but one day this issue came about and has not resolved itself. I tried everything to get this to work including disabling all my spam/ad blocker plugins and disabling my firewall with no results. i really want this fixed but i have run out of ideas for getting this resolved, please help!

Psst: we're doing something fun with the Homepage header this week! Adobe gave us a sneak peek at their Creative Suite 5 package, so we've used some of the new tools in CS5 to create five new themed headers and make some snazzy mods to some of our house ads. It's a great way to have fun with our header, and celebrate the release of our new categories! As a bonus for all you Photoshop artists out there, fungus amungus will be posting an Instructable documenting how he made the header images. How did he get the laser-cut logo to float? There are some neat new tricks that made the process super-easy. Check out How to Make an Instructables Header for full instructions! Check back on the homepage every day this week to see what's new, and let us know what you think! Note: the rest of the site is normal; any changes are the result of our new categories and updated header. The homepage header will revert to its normal orange on Saturday.

Hey Everyone, It has recently come to my attention though the forums that many of my fellow Instructabrarians, or as caitlinsdad will have it 'Iblers, are not at all happy with the current homepage layout of the website. Now, I'll admit, I'm quite biased towards this. As a new member of the Instructables Staff, I actually got to beta test the new site a week ago and as a long time user of the site, and I quite honestly didn't see anything glaringly wrong with it. Sure it wasn't the original homepage, but I felt the white background and interchanging instructables gave it a much more "Apple-esque" feel. But, after browsing through the forums this morning, I can tell I'm slightly in the minority on this. So, I was really hoping we could start an General All Purpose Site Improvements page with constructive criticism of what you think could be improved. JamesRPatrick has already suggested what kind of things could be improved with the site, and I would really love to hear more. Rather than complain about what you don't like, please tell me what you would like to see improved with the new homepage or features you think could make it better. Look, I'm a fan of the site just like everyone else is and I've been a fan much longer than I've been working here. So if there's something on the homepage you want changed, please tell me because I want to know. As new member of the Instructables team and admin, I can't make any promises that anything can or will be changed on our homepage but I can promise you I will at least bring all of your comments to our next staff meeting. -SHIFT! Well, here's my Instructables Homepage idea, I just want people to see it.Some might not know how this will work, so let me explain. -Pop ups go where is says "Pop up Ad", etc.-Contests go where it says "Contest Listings go in here"-Community blog goes where it says blog.TOP-Instructables Robot goes to the help page. (the bubble thing too)-Click on "Instructables" or the hand, and it goes to the homepage.-Mouse Mouse! That's the special Instructables that's always on the home page.-Popular/ Most Rated/ Most Viewed/ RANDOM. These buttons will direct you to the desired button thing..-"Check out these cool Instructables." Not able to click.MIDDLE AND ETC.-Featured. Instructables will be going down that isle thing, and at the bottom, click the button to see more featured Instructables.-Popular. Same as Featured.-Zeitgiest. Same as featured/ popular.-Same thing with blog, click the "see more blogs" to obviously see more blogs..RIGHT SIDE-Forums. Well, it can be in any order, but it's going to be like how it is now. When you hover over any of those buttons, it will come out, like how you hover over forums now, and it comes out. All the same stuff will be in there as normal.-Groups. Same as forums.-Instructables. Same as Groups.-SlideShows. Same as Instructables.-Videos. Same as you know what.-Newsletter. Takes you to newsletter.-Submit. The stuff that comes out when it says "submit" will come out.-YOU. Maker Store.-Instructables Store. <--- "Repeat".THIS WILL BE A BIT DIFFERENT IF PUBLISHED, BECAUSE THE HOMEPAGE IS BIGGER. THIS IS JUST A PIECE OF GRAPH PAPER, DRAWN BY A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD.....and a few months. Here's the link to the image. The image is below if you don't want to move your mouse to the link.Click the link though, it's full size on the link I gave you. Thanks for looking, tell me what you think! Every time i go on instructables since Tuesday the home page acts up. (most likely for attention) The part that is normally orange is now white. (This only happens on the home page) This didn't bother me at all until i tried to look at the Epilog contest. I realized that the contest section is missing. I can still navigate my way there but it is kinda tedious and frustrating. Not to much of a problem but time consuming. Any suggestions?

There is a new update as all of you will have probably noticed by now. I've got my own views on the update. [I miss the orange colour...] But, I wanted to now what the large community at Instuctables thinks about the updated home page. So... Please comment about what you think!

We're pleased to have Craftsman sponsoring Instructables in a big way. You can see part of this sponsorship on the homepage, where we're running exclusive ads from Craftsman and some background images for the next couple of days. In the very near future, we're going to start a contest with Craftsman, which will be our biggest to date. More on that later, but you're going to love it, and I'm really excited about it.Finally, their Nextec Auto Hammer looks really cool, and I can't wait to try one out.

I logged in to my pro membership account this morning and saw that there was not one, but several ads being displayed on the Instructables homepage. The worst of them is a giant video ad promoting a new show at the top of the page! Can anyone explain to me why I'm suddenly seeing ads even though I'm a pro member?? I know that the organization needs revenue, but they got it in the form of membership money from me, so I should't have to see these ugly ads. This disappoints me tremendously...

Hi all, I am following some categories (such as woodworking, home improvements, etc) and users. Is there is a way to browse only through the followed categories/users instead of the homepage featured instructables? Something like a personalised homepage? Sorry if it is already been asked, I searched in the forum but have not found an answer. Thanks in advance!

Just a suggestion, it would be cool if pro members had the option to rearrange the front page like you can do with iGoogle. Maybe they don't like the recent instructables at the bottom, and would rather have their comments there. Alot of people dont have macromedia flash player, which is required to view the instructables in the slideshow at the top.. I like the front page just the way it is, but some others might not. Just something to think about for the future.

I was looking for an image of the old-old instructables homepage, but it looks like you block the internet archive:http://web.archive.org/web/20060615203859/https://www.instructables.com/Would it not be cool to have an archive of instructables?

I opened up the site and saw this great looking lamp instructable on the homepage (https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Recycled-TetraBox-Lamp/) I really liked it and thought of putting up a comment when I saw that in a previous comment, another user mentioned seeing the exact same images and content before in another place. It's nothing new that people are blatantly copying content(which might be copyrighted too) for winning prizes, but these appearing on the main homepage is a little disappointing. Another example of such project getting featured on homepage was a 9V-battery top spy bug instructable some time back. I understand the instructable staff can't keep knowledge of every project ever posted, and to feature only the original ones. But can we have an option to flag as "Blindly Copied" with link to original work, so the instructable staff can check and remove it? None of the current flag categories match the requirement,

Software security issues are often obvious to a second pair of eyes. I just posted the PHP scripts for my personal contact homepage as an instructable:Simple PHP personal contact homepage (web3.0!)Can you hack it? Preferably a copy on your local machine and not on my actual server... I deleted all my administration files and classes prior to making this post, just in case.I have two primary concerns:1. General PHP injection attacks. Proper handling and escaping of form data.2. The admin interface has a sessions based authentication mechanism. Login is compared to a MD5 hash of the password, then a session is created with an MD5 hash of the user's IP address. Each subsequent page load compares the authenticated session IP with the user's IP address (again, an MD5 of both). The goal is to prevent remote session stealing related flaws by tying the session to an (unknown...) IP address. Obviously if you have access to the local machine this is all moot, but there is little I can do about that. If an intruder were to get around the session authentication, they would be able to upload files just about anywhere on my server using the admin upload interface. This is a bit of a concern...I think in light of this, I'm going to add an option to limit the web admin interface to one IP address. My IP is fairly static, and if it changes, simply upload a new config file by ftp.

Just noticed this tonight, since going to larger pictures on the homepage a bizarre thing has started to occur. When looking at the homepage for more then 10 seconds, the pictures in the category fields blank out and are replaced by white squares of the equivalent size. One picture in each category remains however, and always the same pic. This does not change even if I sign in/out, reboot explorer or reboot my computer for that manner. In the morning when I get home I will see if this is also occuring in firefox. Anyone else notice this or is it perhaps the odd filtering playing tricks on me at work.

As you've noticed, we've been making some design changes to Instructables. We're trying to accomplish a number of things including making it easier to find content you're interested in, creating more compelling products for advertisers, and supporting and growing what we've already built. Here, I'll share the details around some specific design changes. One of my big goals for 2010 is to increase our direct visitors. A direct visitor might type our URL into their browser, click on a link in a newsletter, come to the site from one of their bookmarks, or search for a phrase that includes "Instructables". Other types of visitors include searchers, who come to the site from phrases such as "sweet potato fries" but aren't specifically trying to reach Instructables.com, and visitors from blogs or news portals. My thesis is that more and more brand advertisers will want to reach our true community, and not people who are just passing by. A pretty good proxy for our true community is direct visitors, and we've already seen the savviest advertisers try to reach only that community by advertising exclusively on our homepage (the recent Apple campaigns, for example). To grow our business and ensure that Instructables thrives, it's important that we have great opportunities for advertisers, and a stronger community means more great Instructables and more intelligent people seeing and commenting on your Instructables. To this end, we've been working to increase the likelihood that someone will go deeper into our content, and remember to come back in the future. Said another way, we want that sweet potato fries Google search to introduce someone to Instructables, and then have them think, "wow this site is amazing, I'll bookmark it, sign up for the newsletter, come back, etc..." Some of the most dramatic changes are on the homepage and channel homepages. On the homepage, we've removed the intro text from the links to Instructables. By making the homepage less cluttered with words, I was hoping to increase the number of people clicking on an Instructable. Also, I felt that the beginning of the intro text didn't contribute much to my understanding of the Instructable, and often it was no more than a repetition of the title (and at worse a note about how it was someone's first...). Removing text to increase engagement might seem counter-intuitive, but with too much going on, visitors sometimes just leave rather than decide what to click on. So far, clicks from the homepage are flat or slightly up, so this change hasn't had a negative effect on deepening visits, and may over time move us in a positive direction. On the channel homepages, we've drastically changed the layout to be more blog-like. My theory here was to give people a format they were more familiar with from elsewhere on the web, and results have been dramatic. The exit-rates (the percentage of visitors that leave Instructables from a particular page) on our channel homepages have been cut in half. For example, the exit-rate on the home channel homepage has dropped from 12% to 4.5%. This is really good! To me, this indicates that on the channel homepages we're giving visitors more compelling content, and they are more likely to dig into that content. In support of our efforts to deepen visits, we've been doing similar smaller changes all over the site. Most of these are based on our traffic and click analysis, and if my theories are wrong, we change back or try something else. One particular change that has generated concern is the removal of the Answers link from the header. This has nothing to do with our support of Answers in general -- it's based on data. That link was almost completely unused. Coming again from the perspective of making a slightly cleaner look, we removed it. As the link wasn't generating any clicks, traffic to Answers has been unaffected. In fact, as we're highlighting specific answers on the channel homepages, traffic to the Answers section is actually up 7% since we removed the link: from Feb. 1 - 18 answers did an average of 11.1 K pageviews per day; from Feb. 19 - 28 it's done 11.9 K pageviews per day. Perhaps that's noise in the data, but removing the link certainly hasn't been the end of answers, and the trend since the change is positive. So, we do rearrange the furniture from time to time, but it's never without reason. We're always trying to make Instructables better. We've messed up in the past, and we'll surely mess up in the future; but I think this is good, because if we're not reaching and striving a little bit beyond our comfort zone, we're not learning and improving.

Hi! I recently posted my instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Custom-Stamp-With-Brass-Inlay/ it got put on the homepage and has tons of views but no likes, this may be because i made the 'ible quite long by adding photos directly into the html, making it harder to see the whole thing, should i remove the photos?

I've noticed a popup ad that's been around for awhile now. The ad itself says something along the lines of taking a survey... I just got one on the homepage where the only ads I could spot were craftsman ones, if that helps. Its fairly prevalent, I'm surprised no one else has commented on it.
