Things we could do without on i'bles

Ok, recently I have been seeing more and more Instructables that make me wonder about the youth of today, so in memory of my favorite comedian George Carlin (if you are under 18 or easily offended don't google him) I present People Instructables could do without: People who think piracy is a good thing to post. People who plagiarise (sp?) other peoples work and pass it up as their own. Pyramid scheme and other spammers. Companies who think that this is free advertising (remember what dremmel did?) People who make I'bles that should be a slideshow or forum topic. People who make I'bles on drugs, stealing, etc. I wont single anyone out by posting examples, and I know I'm no angel myself. Comments?

I HATE group work.

HATE HATE HATE!It is really the one thing I dread about school. More than anything. It makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a requirement in Kentucky schools that you have a group assignment in each class and it makes my life a living hell.I always end up doing all the work and I really don't like other people getting the same grade as me for doing nothing! For example - I am in a group with five other people right now, 3 of which are athletes. They can never do anything. They constantly say they're busy. They decided that we should do our outside work tomorrow, right before I have to go into work. And as if that's not stressful enough, none of them actually mentioned doing the work we need to do before we go out and do assessments. The pre-assessment work is very involved - we have to do six physical activity assessments on elementary school kids, with 3 criteria that should be met for each assessment, as well as making up data collection sheets for each assessment. We also need to get our assessments OK'd by the teacher before we go. So now I'm sitting here stressing out wishing that I could just do this project myself and ease the pain. I emailed the teacher and let him know what was going on, and none of my group mates have emailed me back yet.I think I'm going to go make grumpy faces in the other room and get off the computer. :P

Just Don't Use it Near Water!

I've always sort of wondered why people who make game systems have to include warnings not to use them in water. Today I got my answer for me. I thought this was pretty funny. My solution: DON'T USE ELECTRONICS NEAR WATER!!!!! You'll probably have to click the 'i' in the corner of the image to be able to see what I have highlighted.

Smash labs

I'm watching smash labs andbheres what I have to say: How do they get enough money for all that they use? They smashed dozens of cars, completely covered a trailer home in carbon fiber, and all that stuff?!? Plus I don't like the girl she talks to people like they're idiots.

Help and idiot to control LEDs via USB

I have what's a common question, however the usual answers I see relate to Arduino or some other all-in-one package which I really want to avoid. It's been 4-5 years since I did anything like this and I've pretty much reverted to an amateur again! My aim is to build the simplest circuit to control anywhere from 8 to 64 LEDs via USB within Windows and Linux using C or assembly. I'm not adverse to doing some PIC work but I no longer own any of the kit so would need to pick up the programmer again... if I could avoid doing this it would be great but I don't know if it's feasible. Should I be looking at FTDI chips or am I barking up the wrong tree? Is there a basic instructable that I've overlooked that might point me in the right direction?

another and hopefully the last dual booting question

Okay, i've found a site that tells step by step how to set up a dual boot system(?). Problem is i'm not a computer genius, but i'm not a total computer idiot. So my question is, is this site helping or trying to misguide me? http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp(in case it doesn't post)

Coffins, bedstead and idiot rescued by lifeboat.

Sometimes I wonder how we earned our reputation as a seafaring nation... A DIY sailor had to be rescued by the Lyme Regis coastguard and lifeboat after taking to the sea in a DIY yacht consisting mainly of two coffin-sized plywood boxes and an iron bed frame. The anonymous man had spent several days on the beach, lashing his vessel together.  It was so obviously unseaworthy that the coastguard and lifeboat crews warned him not to put to sea. Unfortunately, he did put to sea off Charmouth.  On an out-going tide in an offshore breeze. Within yards, onlookers had to call emergency services, and the lifeboat insisted on towing the (for want of a better word) boat back to the beach.  The captain had been unable to make headway against the breeze with his home-made oars... I've got to wonder... how many of our own authors have been in a similar situation? (You get all the serious news in the Daily Mail...)

convert 12v cordless battery to solar charge

My first post- great site! I'm a complete idiot when it comes to electrical; does anyone out there know of a way to charge a 12v cordless drill battery with a solar panel- the eventual end result being to power a bank of LED lights and can all LED lights be powered with DC, if so how many could I expect to run?

How Do You Make a Clock Silent?

I've tried tinkering, but it never seems to work. Is there a way to make an analog clock silent (or at least quieter), without actually turning it off (the idiot's answer to everything)? I recently had to retire my old bedside clock, and so I bought a cheap-o one at Wal-Mart for about 5 dollars...and it is the loudest thing I've ever heard. Will someone please enlighten me?

Stop bad grammar!

I've been noticing around our community, there are people typing liek ths. WTF is up with that? Nobody understands it, and nobody talks like that in the real world! I mean, really! Nobody would walk up to a friend and say "Dat vid on youtube wus lol rigt?". See how idiotic that sounds?! Now i hope you learn from this, and go type normally.

Spam

I wonder why Instructables is not using some basic spam filters to prevent these idiotic bots from posting? At least a simple language check to lock out the worst ones would be great. If during writing and posting the system notices most of the text is not in english than it will be filtered so a mod can check it. Can't be too hard, can it? Don't know about others but I don't really like those spammers and prefer to have them running at locked doors.

Disposable camera innards

I was taking apart a disposable camera today and found this thing. It looks like it is probably a coil of some sort, and it has a little brother hanging out on another part of the circuitboard. The big one is about 1 cm across, and the little one is about 5mm. What, precisely is it, what does it do, how does it do it, and if I replaced it with a bigger one, what would happen? In idiot-english, please, I'm not well-versed on electrical devices. The little one, especially, reminds me of an ultra-small high-tension coil. Is that what it is? Does it perform precisely the same duty in this circuit?

Getting known

Hi everybody, READ THIS (ALL OF IT): Recently I asked a question about how to get better known in the k'nex community on instructables. I got lots of tips but most of them didn't help me because I already used them. Except for this one: POST A FORUM TOPIC. So here it is, my forum topic, everyone who reads this will now know me because they think: What an idiot and what a stupid avatar picture(I agree). That's me, Mr. Muggle ( or actually: mrmuggle but I don't know how to change that)

Military bone yard episode on the History channel

Did anyone watch the Military bone yard episode on the History channel? It is amazing to see how they can repair a vehicle that is in as bad of shape as it was and make it like new again. On the other hand, I could not believe what they do with equipment that is outdated or too much work to rapair.M16 being tossed into grinders Vietnam and WW2 era tanks smelted down into a hunk of metal. Amazing pieces of engineering destroyed along with its history. All because of the idiots in Washington who want to keep this stuff away from the public. The episode pained me so much, that I could not watch the rest of it.

LED blades windmill - design and/or build the components ?

LED blades windmill - design and/or build the components ? About two years ago, a number of groups at Burningman had LED displays on the blades, powered by the same Windmill. The displays on each of the the blades could be programmed with different sequences of tri-colors to form art or pictures as the blades rotated. I am looking for someone to instruct me (an electronics idiot) or preferably build the parts necessary to put a similar unit up in the rural area I live in. The locals would be amazed (virtually no intelligence regarding technology!).   Top of Form 2

If I try to go to either my Comments page or the Forums page via my shortcut links, I only get the bottom part of the page available (see screenshot, and note position of slider bar to the right.  The cropping of the Forums also happens when I use the standard (grey) tabbed link. To make this bug report, I had to go via the submit link on the front page. The Recent, Contests and Answers pages do not appear to be affected. FF4, XP. My idiotic dad doesn't think my grades are good or at least above average. What do you think?

So yeah, I got expelled from school on the last week, but the school decided to be nice and give me my report card. I personally think I did OK, some of my friends and teachers even praised me for it, but my perfectionist father lashed his anger at me to no end. Check these out:(Note: The passing is 2 out of 6, my school's standards aren't really that high)English: 5 out of 6Math: 4 out of 6Science: 4.5 out of 6Indonesian: 6 out of 6Physical Education: 6 out of 6Technology: 5 out of 6Social Studies: 4.5 out of 6So yeah, I know right, WTF. I even got an award for 6th best 7th grader overall (there are 34 7th graders in my school) on the award ceremony the week before I got expelled. As I said before, my friends and teachers praised me for this, but my dad insists that its very average. I tried telling my dad that this is actually pretty good and I'm one of the best off and that more than 5 kids went to summer school because they failed more than two subjects. But he wouldn't listen and used that stupid don't compare yourself to them excuse to screw out my arguments. So yeah, tell me what you think & any advice on how to lower my dad's perfectionist standards would be greatly appreciated.

Masking tape? he said it was some trick that was very well known... he called me an idiot... i got all confused why he expected me to know... i argued why i should know, then he hung up, and got all pissed at me for some wierd reason...so i just need to know: what's the deal with this trick i've never heard of?

AC Voltage Attenuation?

Hello, All- I am making my second version of the "Tube Lamp." Others have managed to wire in these neat-looking old analog meters on theirs, and I thought that would be something I'd like to try. I bought a couple 1-10VAC meters from fairradio.com... The problem is (besides the fact that I am an electronics idiot) that obviously if I try to wire in this particular meter to normal 110 AC, the meter will blow up. Is there a way to attenuate the voltage coming out of the dimmer to "play nice" with the 1-10 VAC meter? I suppose I would need to divide the voltage by a factor of 10. How would I step down the voltage to the meter only, while supplying the bulbs with the proper voltage? Any help would be appreciated!

Problem with putting a GIF into an Instructable.

Hello, I am wondering there is a bug ( or maybe I have just misunderstood something). I've successfully put a GIF into an Instructable before but this time I seem to be having a problem. It's a simple two frame GIF; I have just put it in,as I would a photo, but it does not animate in preview or full preview. I can't remember what I did before that may have been different. I even inserted it into one of my existing Instructable's as a test but to no avail. If I open the GIF in Safari it works. I made it in Photoshop CS3 and saved it optimised for the web but I am such a idiot-hole that there is probably something very simple that I have overlooked. Any advice ? Thank you. PS It's on  an unpublished Instructable draft page: http://https://www.instructables.com/id/E56EWRZHAVGK4PD/

Solar-powered laser (supposedly)

I was in this other forum about the Mythbusters' "Archimedes' Death Ray" thing. Our discussion went off topic, so I made another topic! According to Google, a laser is a device that produces monochromatic, coherent beam of light. We have established the coherent part of it by focusing the Sun's energy on point which has a mirror so theoretically, that focused part of the beam should reflect off the mirror. Our design(s) is/are based on multiple parabolas (or Fresnel lenses) to collect and focus light. The light is in turn reflected off mirrors to be combined on a mirror (or lens) which will be used to aim the light to the target. Unfortunately, I forgot the "monochromatic" part of the laser, but that's not a problem. All we have to do is put filters on our parabolas. That should be a cool enough part to filter the light without melting the filter(s) itself / themselves. What would be an idiotic thing to do is put the filter right in front of the last mirror, because it would melt it (unless off course, that filter was a pane of glass).   Any suggestions/comments/design ideas please put them up here. If your idea is just downright stupid (sorry, I don't know what else to use (other than idiotic, or crazy, actually crazy's better than stupid (back to topic))). If it is stupid, I will not use offensive words against you (unless you were swearing on my face); you will, instead, be facing the following words: "Sorry, your (insert suggestion/comment/idea) is not feasible. Please try again". I know it's a bit funny; part of it is for your entertainment, part of it is for your knowing. Again, please post any suggestion, comment, or ideas. By the way, if it's only a bit stupid, you won't be needing to face the words... Have a nice day!

Toxic Magnet Wire?

I know I'm probably going to sound like an idiot for asking, but can magnet wire release any toxic fumes when heated? I made a speaker using a magnet-wire coil and a neo-magnet, and when I plug it into the amp, I realized the coil gets very hot. I was expecting this, for I've used a number of coils in other projects. There is an odor, no doubt, that comes from every coil I've used when making an electromagnet. Sure, the smell may come from the iron nail being heated, but I always associate the smell with the coil. I'm not willing to smell this speaker, however. So, is there any risks that come from the heating of magnet wire? The coil gets hot after about a minute of run-time, but I'd like to be able to run through an entire album of music (an hour?) if possible. Thanks!

Lack of regard to personal safety or the safety of those who read a post.

I'm just wondering as to why there as so many ibles posted that are an accident just waiting to happen? Does anyone check out as to how safe the end product will be?  Do Instructables.com have some kind of get out clause to stop themselves getting sued to buggery when some less than bright child does one of these and becomes a Darwin award winner? I'm all on for the self cleansing of the gene pool by guys who blatantly disregard thier own and others health and safety. I dont believe that we should be making the the job easier by showing them how to do idiotically dangerous things. I am an engineer by trade, I have always been aware of safety issues, but still managed to collect a fine collection of injuries and scars over the years. If there are featured and winner banners why not one for marking the dangerous or unsafe ones?

For all uninformed people and glassware users

Because it wasn't instructable material, but needed to be said, i put it up as a thread now this can happen to anyone... ok only amatures but still, and maybe non-amatures *cough cough*. What not to do with glassware: First of all after heating glassware do not-- Cool it quickly Put pressure on it Touch it when boiling or heating liquids do not-- Cap you container Insert anything that may block the gas escape Now i know you thinking that this is common sense which for some people is true but i don't need the next generation of destructible chemists with sliced up faces and hands (*coMugh coEugh*) It can happen to non amatures who just got accidentally careless, i just had a test tube with water, potassium perchlorate, sodium hydroxide, iron, iron oxide, and a little bit of ethyl alcohol blow up on me and yes you can call me an idiot

Any Power Source USB Charger

So here what I have in the works, I'm trying to make a pocket sized gadget that will charge a USB device from anything,  Normal 110v AC, And anything from 4 AA Batteries to a 28v Cordless tool battery,  to a Car Battery, Solar Panel in the middle of Mars, etc, Anything giving off Between 6-35V (Be nice if I could find a 7805 that had a Vin (Max) of 40V, Several manufacturers make 36v cordless tools) . I'll use alligator clips to attach to the battery of choice, and I'll throw in a Diode bridge to make it idiot proof. I plan on having a switch between an AC and DC Circuit. And of course, I'll throw a decent sized heat sink on the regulator. Any Suggestions? I'm not the most electrical savy person out there, so if you foresee any problems, let me know.

Where do the comments go?

I've had several comments on Instructables and Forum topics just disappear. Not the "removed by author or community request" thing, just *poof* gone like they never existed. This has been ocurring off and on since at least last May. Does anyone know why? Maybe the database got restored from an earlier backup or something? I'm sure that none of the missing comments could possibly have been construed as offensive or not nice, so that's not it. Most of them were either "Hey, great Instructable!", questions about details in the Instructable, or most recently a "mea culpa" response to kelseymh when I mis-posted a forum topic by accident and he moved it to the correct place. (That one did contain the word "idiot", but I was referring to myself, and it was clearly a self-deprecating joke anyway). In any case, if it's related somehow to routine site manitenance, is there any way to avoid this? I've seen that others have had the same problems in the past, but no definitive explanations have been posted AFAIK.

Coin a phrase, or one liner

Have you ever wonder were, phrases come from like  " That's what she said " or  "See you later.......not if I see you first" or "Well, there's your problem!" I think i may of coined a phrase, but of course I can't prove it  " Its funny cause its true"   I even heard it on TV the other night, I have been saying that for years. Anyways today after a student made a mess I gave him a mop and bucket and told him to clean it up. After 20 minutes I came back and he had managed to make the mess about 100 times worse. I was very annoyed with him and I was inspired to say  "Never send an idiot to do a job a monkey could do" Anyway there is, If it takes off I will now have proof that i said it first on 20 april 2016 So whats your favorite phrase or one liner?  Maybe you could come up with the next "That's what she said!"

Simple Light Switch Question

Hi there. Very simple question from an idiot. I'm making a mini puppet of robby the robot from forbidden planet. for the mouth i've a simple set of cheap battery powered leds. There are 20 leds and i've got them in 2 rows of 10. I want to be able to operate them in a really simple way so that the top row comes on or the bottom row or both on to simulate robby speaking. My plan is to split the set of lights into 2 sets of 10 and have each on a circuit where i was going to make a switch for each set that is simply something you press down. Then having the 2 switches next to one another so you can press 1 or the other or both at once simply with your thumb, and i'm thinking of simply using a coke tin aluminium to complete each circuit. I can imagine someone who actually knows what they are doing thinking, this guy knows nothing! and they'd be right! but any tips or alternative methods or even confirming this plan will work are much appreaciated, thankyou.

Does anyone here know about vintage hats/caps?

You know those caps they had back in the 20s and 30s, the ones where the top would kinda hang out over the bill, kinda like the one in the pic, but not exactly. Well, does anybody know how to make one? If you can make one, then please post an I'ble, 'cause I've been needing one for a while and can't find any. By the way, the one on the right is sideways, incase of any confusion. I was kicked off of Yahoo! Answers today. I never realized how much of a slave I was to them. You Instructables people are smarter. I am leaving Yahoo! I have switched over to my Gmail account, and I'm happy. I've asked about this cap on Yahoo, and never got an answer. But you guys/gals are smarter and craftier, and I can actually go a good while on here without calling someone an idiot, unlike Yahoo. Well, have fun crocheting, knitting or sewing a cap from the long ago(if you'd like to).

An hour and a half gone.

I just lost an hour and a half of work, because I trusted this website a little too much.  I was starting up some directions for a project I want to do, and my computer lost the wireless connection. I clicked "save," and the page did two things. First, it completely crashed, saying it could not update. Two, this idiotic "Updating" frame came up, that BLOCKED me from being able to copy and paste the material that took all that time to put together. I know you guys can't control everything, and that it's not your fault my wireless router is stupid, but you really, REALLY need to get rid of that "Updating" splash that blocks us from being able to access what we just wrote.  I know now I'll get comments on here saying, "You should save more often, moron." Yes. I should have. I should have written it first in Word as well. In fact, there's a lot of things I should have done. I guess I'm spoiled by autosave utilities.

Push-mower blade removal

Heylo everybody! :) I have a self-propelled mower that I am disassembling for a go-kart (probably). I've gotten everything off of it except for the engine. I know where the bolts are to take if off of the mower deck, but here's the problem: the blade won't come off. I've blocked the blade in both directions and tried to loosen the middle bolt by turning both left and right, but the mower is pretty old and the shaft and bolt are probably rusted to craps. I also attempted shearing off the bolt with a crowbar and hammer, as well as cutting the head of the bolt off with a Sawzall. The bolt dulled all the teeth on the metal blade for the Sawzall and dented the crowbar's edges. So does anybody have any suggestions? I'm really at a loss on this one. I don't have access to a grinder or plasma cutter, which would seriously help out a lot. I was thinking about picking up a cold chisel from the store, but if I'm just being an idiot and turning in the wrong direction or something obvious, I'd rather know that than lop off a bolt and lose some of the hackability of the engine. Thanks!   - basementhacker

Looking for adjustable accordion arm

I recently had a great idea for a completely useless, yet hilarious project for me to work on, but I am stuck on a single piece. The end result is a joke device that uses one of those accordion, spring loaded boxing gloves controlled over USB (the idea came about in a discussion over the universal wish to punch idiots over TCP/IP). To understand what this is, you'll have to think slapstick comedy and saturday morning cartoons (of the Wile E. Coyote variety). It sort of looks like this but replace the lamb with a boxing glove, and when extended looks like this: XXXXXXXX. Imagine the coyote opening a door that he expects the Road Runner to be behind, and out pops a boxing glove on an accordion arm that hits him in the face, making those little roadrunners circle his head.I suppose I could make one out of some material (metal, plastic, wood?) but I don't have much in the way of fabrication facilities in my new apartment. The best outcome would be if I could get such an arm off of an existing device.Sure other things could work (a piston for example), but the look of this project is very important and an accordion arm is a requirement to that end.Any idea on how to go about building/obtaining such a thing? I can't even figure out what to use as search terms.

Unless i am mistaken, rail guns use high voltage rails, and conduct through the rails and a projectile... not unlike jacobs ladders. if we took a jacobs ladder and made the rails parallel, they could be used as a rail gun. right? if so... what's to stop us from having a gravity feed rail gun, something that rols a ball bearing or some such metallic ball or rod onto the rails to be shot down, the moment the first projectile isn't touching the rails, the new one rolls on... say... power it with a cordless drill battery and step the voltage up with a wallwart transformer? if we can make portable tesla coils... a rail gun doesn't seem so far fetched. granted, this post isn't using any technical jargon so you probably all think i'm an idiot, but i do believe that it's possible. my knowledge of rail guns is fairly rudimentary. any ideas? it would obviously be VERY low velocity... but if you were to make it stationary, you could upsize it and run it through a large MOT from a microwave, or a transformer from a UPS or something equally massive and... well... have a fullly automatic rail gun turret-y thing? yes?

Help making a heating pad

Hi folks, Essentially, I'm trying to make a heating pad and I'm becoming terrible confused. . . Let me start by offering some background on my project. I'm building a fermentation cabinet that will be cooled by a window A/C unit. The cabinet will be split into two halves. The first half, with the A/C unit, will be for lagering beer and cold conditioning. Temps will be around 40° F. The beer fermenting in the second half show be kept at about 60°-70° F.  The 120mm PC fan will turn on and blow cold air into the second chamber when the temperature drops below a set point. I would like to have heating belts wrapped around the containers in the second chamber to bring the heat of the liquid up when it drops too low. This is where I'm getting very confused. I'm basically an idiot when it comes to electrical work. . . I would like to use about 7' of 30 AWG Teflon coated copper wire as my heating element. I've calculated the resistance of the wire at .722 ohms (this is the part where you ought to start speaking up and correcting me). Can anyone help me figure out what type of resistor I would need to drop the voltage down enough to get a 20W heating element? I'm starting with 120V from the wall. The sketch below is the cabinet design. Thanks, Chris

Instructables Internship - Day 8

Wednesday: Jason's Last v_vToday was Jason's (derangedmoose7) Last Day, so we pretty much just spent all of it working on Project X. It's come along so far, it's truly quite amazing how quickly it was originally put together and how long it's taking to tweak it in order to get what we really want. I feel bad keeping Proj. X a secret from all of you, it would be awesome to tell you what we're doing every day, but It's gotta be kept a secret until it's released.By the way, Wednesday was my and Noah's salad club day. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the muffin stuffs... AGAIN.... I'm such an idiot....Luckily, Noah brought salad stuffs and we made lunch together, again, I got to chop! I also played around with my solar panels a bit, diffusing the LEDs and getting new LEDs, too. I made one earring, but it doesn't work very well... The LEDs light, but they're not bright... at all. I'm thinking about putting a cap on there so that they charge, and then some sort of tansistor that will clamp when there isn't sufficient light, the LED's flash for a split second, grabbing everyone's attention. Sounds good, doesn't it?!Hmmm... what else? I was planning on playing with the laser cutter today, but alas, I was working on Proj. X with Jason, that that'll have to wait for tomorrow. OH! THAT'S RIGHT! I made the Badge templates Wednesday night! HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT THOSE?well, going out to see scenic Oakland. gotta go!Cheers,-Muffinator

Extreme Art in Cabral´s forest park: Rock Music video "A"

Extreme Art to save one of the best forest parks (Cabral’s forest park), in the city of Vigo, in Galicia -Spain-: Rock music video "A" (BEN SENMEDO). We made it also with free software (Kdenlive - Manjaro, end format WebM, audio Ogg) and the song is in Gallego, a language that we speak in the NorthWest of Spain. Actually, the place chosen to make the videoclip, known as "Monte de Cabral" or "Cotogrande", has serious risks of being destroyed, because of the complicity of the mayor of the city, Abel Caballero, with the Britsh corporation Eurofund. The mayor and the corporation want to convert the forest park into a commercial macroproject that they try to call "Porto Cabral". With this video, we hope anyone can enjoy the forest park forever: Letter of "A" in English: In this black horse I'm going to walk between the rain, they fall disks and seas cry out victory. I listen to the ripple of the good souls still death, for me it will never be late, when the fight will be good. I rush forth at the bad management of the power, I leave the jewels, I choose only the pieces of chess. One night, any day, waiting. One night, any day, waiting. People are not silly sheeps, we mount horses, we take the bridles. The souls without fear ever win the larvas, I don't tremble with idiots, you will never see flights. Music: BEN SENMEDO Voice and guitar: Ben Bass: Kuko Jones Black horse: Melanita Rider girl: Olalla De la Iglesia Screen and edit: Alma de Libertade and Muchamufa Colaboration: Edu

Did I fry my DC power supply with AC?

Hi yall, I was a very stupid person tonight, but I have learned from my mistakes. In short I fed my DC power supply AC voltage INTO it, I was working on a subwoofers power board this afternoon, trying to diagnose why it is continually blowing fuses, anyway later I finally figure out that the 8A bridge rectifier is visually burnt as well as two small ceramic caps near it, taking the most obvious route I replace them with the same spec parts and power on, no activity but its not burning fuses at least for now. I usually have my multimeter connected right to my 40V old "Lambda" (crap brand) power supply on the same test leads, so I can get an accurate reading of how much power I am putting INTO the circuit. I rarely work on live circuits and should have known this. I attempt to get a reading with the meter while the sub woofer is plugged in and turned on. Little do I realize that the meter and the power supply are both the same leads, so I am putting AC power INTO my power supply where it should only be outputting power. I of course see the power supplys indicators light up and show a spike of the max 40V and then slowly dying down to 0 then I hear something fizzle and smell electronics heating up. I shut it off obviously after only about a few seconds Now I cant even get it to power a lamp or LED, NO MORE POWER. Should I cut my losses and just get a new power supply or try and salvage mine?

What happend to the favorites button.

OK Who's the idiot that's trying to justify there job with the site down grade and yes it is a down grade in my opinion. This site Instuctables is my go to place for how toes , wish I'd thought of that and to share ideas learn new skills. I spent a week trying to work out what was wrong with my computer. I thought there was a setting problem or graphics card problem only to find out that it,s not my end but your end with a format update.Where to start, how bout the endless white back ground. It burns my eyes after a few minutes. the pics are way to big. What happened to the favorites button ? I have over 1100 favorites saved . I save the posts I like for reference to make review build or cook latter. But this option seems to be gone. What I would like to see is some way to save my favorites in there categories like food workshop home outdoors this would help looking for posts easier to find instead of the random order they were saved in.Is there any way to go back to the old format and let your fans choose, like ( stay on old old format or up date to new format ) but with the option to go back to the old if you don,t like it. I know the sits may have some issues that i'm not a where off and you work hard behind the seens to keep everything running smooth. I think you went to far to quick. You may loose fan over this I mite be one of them. This all may sound very harsh and it's meant to I'm try to get my point across that i don't like the new format. I only say all this out of LOVE for this site. Please don't let it fall on deaf ears. thanks JIMWI

Bouncing PC! How to secure PCI/PCIe cards and keep cables in place?

I have a desktop PC with a lot of components including a large number of PCI/PCIe cards. The problem I have is that the machine is regularly transported long distances by a variety of means, including rail, road and sea. What happens is that the (often quite generous) jars and jolts of the journey cause cables to fall out and cards to rise out of their slots at the unsecured end. Each time I have to open everything up and reseat everything. If the machine arrives somewhere where I'm not, it can't be used until I arrive. I've gotten around the problem of SATA cables falling out by purchasing cables that clip into place rather than just flap about in the usual fashion. What I don't know how to do is secure ribbon cables, audio cables, cards and the like.  Because of various constraints: - I can't use plastic zip ties (there's nowhere to secure them) - I can't use brackets (the cards are half height) - I can't swap out or modify the chassis The only option appears to be glue. Old fashioned sticky stuff. Thing is, I've read an awful lot of things on the web and while this question gets asked a fair amount there is no consensus. Some people say to use a conducting type (which seems plain idiotic, given that if applied to a PCI interface it'll short out), and others say to use a glue gun (which might introduce problems with regard to the heat and chemicals). The only suggestion that made sense was a silicon sealant from Loctite designed specifically for circuit boards - Tempflex - but there's almost no information about it and the word 'Temp' makes me concerned it's just a makeshift solution (no pun intended). It's also really too expensive to buy a tube and only then discover it won't work. Does anyone have any thoughts?

One Piece should come back!

Recently I've been wanting to watch One Piece, since I heard that FUNimation had begun dubbing it. Apparently this had happened about a year ago, but since I had stopped watching it on Cartoon Network, I didn't know till I saw an episode with different voices. It was great! A lot of stuff was cut out in the 4kids dub, and the voices were downright awful. Especially sanji's retarded voiceAnyway, the FUNimation dub is really more loyal to the original, and featured a lot of things 4kids left out, like blood, dialogue, or even entire arcs! They cut out one part about a whale and a lighthouse, which at the time didn't seem like much more than filler, but as it turns out, was the background story for a new friggin crew member! So basically, 4kids had completely ruined continuity. The FUNimation dubs on CN was the best thing that ever happened! Yup! All 15 episodes it ran. CN canceled it for no friggin reason, even though the FUNimation dub was quickly gaining much higher ratings than the 4kids one.The main reason I am angry, is that I can't watch the GOOD version o One Piece on tv, because CN is stupid. And I can't watch it on the internet, because FUNimation is too copyright...y... And the DVDs are quite expensive. I can't watch 4kids version now, knowing all the stuff that's missing. All the wounds that should be there. All the facts that have been ignored. All the 9 year old voices on 20 year old men. All the serious themes dumbed down for stupid 8 year with their fingers up their noses! (okay, so my finger is in my nose now, but that's not the point!Basically, this is a rant. Anyway, if anyone likes One Piece, please discuss how idiotic and retarted 4kids is, and how you hope they get ****ed in the *** with an iron stick hard from multiple angles for making a great series just udder ****!

Grid Tie and Induction Motors

Yes, I know it's nearly 3am on the east coast... but and idea struck me. So the idea is to feed small amounts of mechanical power into the power grid. Not necessarily run the meter backwards, but supplement power consumption.I've researched grid tie inverters - which are very expensive. For those wondering, a grid tie inverter is feeds mains power back into the grid by syncing phase angle and phase (no dead shorts :) ) and applying slightly higher voltage. They are very efficient and really not within a college student experiment budget :pSo I was thinking... Rather than go from mechanical to DC to AC to grid - go from mechanical to AC to grid VIA an induction motor. As a proof of concept, use a DC motor + battery to turn an induction motor. Plugged into the grid, in theory, should apply current. Oh, but the phase you say? How do you prevent a dead short?"I've thought of this -- before applying mechanical power - have the grid bring the induction motor up to speed. Then try to turn faster (apply a torque) with the DC motor, for example. In theory, the amount of extra power put into the grid will be related to the slip angle of the motor - which will also control the speed of the input (so you can't go over speed by too much).Keep in mind that this whole battery business is just a proof of concept sort of thing - I'm not talking perpetual motion or any hohaa craziness. In the end, the final mechanical input will be around 200 watts. I expect this to be very low efficiency (likely 50%ish), 100W isn't an answer to the energy issues - but it's an experiment. It's also not going to come even close to driving the meter backwards, but it should run (as supplement) my laptop + two to three 13w CFL's :DI think the theory is feasible -- the inspiration comes from flywheel driven UPS systems. An induction motor is driven while mains power is on to keep a flywheel in motion. When the power goes out, the FW drives the motor and feeds to local grid.I'm thinking of using a "low" rpm induction motor.... If I recall, ceiling fans are 16 pole? So that's 60Hz2*2/16=450rpm... Add ceiling fan motor to the list of things to hunt for :) Looking at the one above my head, it looks like it even has a nice bolt pattern for some sort of pulley shenanigans :DCan someone either throw some ice water on me and slap me for being an idiot -- or let me know if I've found a boat to Valhalla.Oh, and my apologies for dancing around the "mechanical input" details.... There's a reason for this, I promise :) In any case, insight and information is appreciated :)

Amazon's very expensive cable, and the comments for it.

Http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-K2-terminated-speaker-cable/dp/B000J36XR2/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_18 I was flipping around on Kotaku, and came across a page talking about the MASSIVE rip-offs involving HDMI cables. I read the article and found this link in the comments. This is a $9,000 audio cable from Amazon. I went down to the comments (mostly to see if some idiot bought this), and found some interesting comments. And by interesting, I mean I fell out of my chair laughing.  -------------------------------------------------- Some comments: " We live underground. We speak with our hands. We wear the earplugs all our lives. PLEASE! You must listen! We cannot maintain the link for long... I will type as fast as I can. DO NOT USE THE CABLES! We were fools, fools to develop such a thing! Sound was never meant to be this clear, this pure, this... accurate. For a few short days, we marveled. Then the... whispers... began. Were they Aramaic? Hyperborean? Some even more ancient tongue, first spoken by elder races under the red light of dying suns far from here? We do not know, but somehow, slowly... we began to UNDERSTAND. No, no, please! I don't want to remember! YOU WILL NOT MAKE ME REMEMBER! I saw brave men claw their own eyes out... oh, god, the screaming... the mobs of feral children feasting on corpses, the shadows MOVING, the fires burning in the air! The CHANTING! WHY CAN'T I FORGET THE WORDS??? We live underground. We speak with our hands. We wear the earplugs all our lives. Do not use the cables!" - By Whisper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "If there is one cable I would whole-heartedly trust to my Chimera-hunting needs, this would be the cable. No other cable has the tensile strength to properly and efficiently garrote a lycanthrope, asphyxiate an Esquilax or even gag a mermaid. Last week, using my trusty AudioQuest K2 (retrofitted with lead weights, bright orange latex paint and a generous coating of crushed glass stolen from the window of an abandoned church at midnight), I managed to snuff 3 golden unicorns in swift succession!  Pros: Quickly tears through scales, fur, bone, and adamantium with ease  Coils and uncoils from hip holster (optional) quickly and quietly  For a product fabricated from 1,000 Onyx Dragon fetuses, the price is unbelievably reasonable!  Cons: Shipping from the R'lyeh took far too long  Doesn't come in 10' lengths (which would be perfect for hydra, cerberii and other multi-headed creatures)  After every use, I can feel 6 ounces of my soul slipping from my core into the ether. But this may be due to the fact that I prefer to work without gloves. YMMV.  Overall, I would recommend that any hunter buy one, nay, two, of these immediately, and experience the difference that upgrading to the K2 will make in your next quest!" - By Valannin "Pantheon Outcast"
