Hello, I need specs on how to make an indoor skydiving equipment. I heard it needs a very powerful motor coupled with a turbine type of propeller. Maybe you are an engineer who can help. I dont want to buy. i want to make it with your help. Maybe a two person size will do. Please

Soldering indoors? Answered

I'm a grade-A electronics noob, and I'm just starting my first project soon. I'd be doing it now if not for the fact that I'm doing it in an upstairs bedroom and if I know anything about soldering it's that you're supposed to do it in a well-ventilated area. Should I get a fume extractor, or is that more of a luxury? Is there a cheaper alternative? Would it be a problem that there's another house a couple of feet from the window I'll be soldering in front of?

Indoor heating

Hi, I hope this is the correct place to ask some rocket minded guys how we can solve our fridged home problem. Our 30yr old cottage built with 2 layer perimeter brick and covered with heavy clay tiled roof becomes a freezer in winter. With restricted use of power as a result of our Govt's poor planning it gets cut at anytime and gas heaters not being safe, is there a simple way to get natural heat other than installing a fireplace at great cost that could heat all rooms?  B'lieve me guys it's ccold here even with a winter's sun outside, so solar panels or similar would need to absorb heat to distribute it all round and be very costly -  Sunny South Africa not so warm.  Muscpro

Green indoor gardening

I have had an interest in building a greenhouse like area with flouresent bulbs, automated water, and climate control. For the water i could hook up a hose on a timer to a bit of pvc but what is the best way to get proper climate control. What is the desired composition of a water? I guess the question is how do i get nutrient water and proper vitamins straight to a plant?

Or do you really need a big pile or bin outside in a yard? I imagine it would smell too strongly to keep inside.

Wanted: Instructable for Indoor Solar Chimes

I love the ingenious people on this site and am hoping some one can help me with this.  I have desperately tried to find an indoor solar chime like the one in the photo, but the manufacturer is out of business and other imitations are simply poorly made - unsteady curled metal base, only three wimpy cheap chimes, and mostly plastic. Can any creative, engineering minded soul help me out by writing an instructable for a similarly sturdy, aesthetically pleasing, (ceramic perhaps), resonating-5-toned solar chime like the one in the photo? The premise seems pretty basic - sun hits small solar panel creating vibrations which swing pendulum like mechanism which hits chimes and creates a gentle pleasing sound. I just have I would be very grateful if someone, more knowledgeable than me, would take on the challenge or at least shoot me some ideas on how this can be created!!  TIA

Instructables Goes Indoor Skydiving

The Instructables team has been going strong for a while now - some of us have even been with the company for over two years! Eric took Rachel, Eric N and me to iFly, an indoor skydiving facility, as an anniversary gift. Flying is awesome, and now we want to build an indoor machine of our own! I'm going to publish all of my Instructables in flight from now on.Here's video of the first flight we did where we were just learning how to stabilize ourselves. Here's video of the second flight we did where the instructor took us up and down, spun us around, and let us move around a bit on our own.**music NOT from noahw**

Resident Beehives, indoor bees?

I was watching an episode of "how it's made", they were covering commercial tomato's.  The plants were grown in a large building and the plants were pollinated by a in house beehive.  The hive was kept separate from the plants, but the bee's had access through some tubing and a hole in the wall.  Everything I've read suggests that having bee's pollinate your indoor plants is a bad idea.  I'm pretty sure most of these comments are coming from hobbyists, but the claim is that the bees get lost indoors and usually die as a result.  Can anyone enlighten me on the subject?

Indoor War- What weapons?

I've observed that the majority of people think range (and reliability though this seems to be taken way too seriously) wins wars outdoors. So what would you choose for a weapon if it were indoors with a few walls and corners, tables and other cover, and probably the largest room being no larger than 20x20 meters? Just curious. I was thinking that for this reason, I'd like to come up with a shotgun. I have an idea floating in my head if anyone wants to hear it as I can't build it for the obvious usual reasons.

Is there an easy way to make small solar powered lights that work indoors?

This seems like it would be easy, but all I'm finding on the web is answers that use a solar garden light to make basic "moon" jars. That's not exactly working for me: what I want is some small solar LED-looking lights, ideally a track of them, that come on at dusk in our mudroom. I've tried taking apart an outdoor solar garden light, but no luck -- wires too short, and when I tried to modify the wiring (on two testers) they both stopped working. Is there a way to buy all components needed, separately?

Indoor Garden Ideas (or Night Gardening!)

Hello everyone! First off, I love gardening, but over the past few years I've become sensitive to light.  I am now unable to go out into the sun for longer than 30 minutes without some extremely strong sunscreen, and sunscreen only prevents my skin symptoms.  So my outdoor gardening days are: 1. Over  2. Limited to 30 Minute Sessions. I read the Ikea Aquascape Instructable, and I am currently growing some plants for my father's aquarium.  I also want to try the Garden Inside a Ball Instructable as soon as I find a ball to use. Are there any other indoor garden ideas that I can use? I have a pittie that loves to run around and knock things over with his tail, and a German Shepherd that we're watching while the owners continue to not claim him, and he is losing his eyesight so he tends to bump into things. There are a lot of great mini garden ideas, but a lot of them require counter space or tables that we can't provide at the moment. Or maybe some night gardening ideas?  Has anyone written an Instructable on gardening for people with vampirism, *cough*, polymorphous light eruption? I would really love some creative ideas.  Maybe a sturdy indoor window box?

Indoor spacial position system (indoor mini-gps)

Hi all! I'm hoping to work on a little system to allow a device to work out where it is in a room, with some degree of accuracy. I've thought of a few ideas; cameras and tracking points, sonar of some sort, and a few others, but they all have the caveat of requiring direct line-of sight, all the time. My most hopeful idea is that I could create a sort of mini GPS system, thus: A number of radiowave transmitters, perhaps FM, sit in the corners of the room, and transmit the time, or more likely something like 0-9999 in binary, all the time. My device then moves around the room, and works out where it is in the room, based on the number received by each of it's 3(?) radios, and the difference between them. There are a few potential caveats to this approach:   The radio waves may well bounce off the walls, and confuse the receiver.   The assumption is made that there's enough time between transmission of the signal and receiving to notice a difference   Obstacles to the line-of-sight might skew the difference The list is long. I don't suppose anyone has any input on this idea, do they? Graham

Can indooor-outdoor carpet be used as underlay for wood or engineered flooring?

Can I successfully lay flooring —wood or "floating" floor— over already-installed indoor-outdoor carpet? The carpet has virtually no- pile, and I thought it would be a good insulator in lieu of underlay.  If this is a terrible idea...please don't mince words...I can take it! (I'm just working on "no-budget-reno" and the carpet looks as good or better than any underlay I've seen— plus it's already installed! : ) Thanks for any advice anyone may have.

Advice for starting an apartment herb or vegetable garden in extremely dry and cold climate?

I live in the North and can't seem to get anything to grow let alone stay alive! We have snow on the ground Sept to May/June and between Nov to Apr the temp is usually -22F to -49F. It's extremely dry as well. As I live in an apartment, I am limited in floor space and need to keep them away from the windows as they freeze over (too drafty). It should be said that  I'm a beginner at green things - before moving up here, things stayed alive at least (maybe not flourish) but here, EVERYTHING seems to die!

Is there any way I could build an outdoor greenhouse that I can use year round, without costing a fortune?  I also have a spare room on the upper level of my house that I could use but I don't want it to become too humid and rot my walls. Any ideas would help! Thanks!

Need advice on material for an indoor firepit?

I'm looking at building an indoor firepit that uses ethanol fuel. I have it all planned out and everything but need advice on material. I'm thinking of using a clay straw and sand mixture (COB) because it's very strong and fireproof  but I'm not sure if it's the best option. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can a solar light be charged indoors?

Hey guys, Can a solar panel like this be charged with indoor lighting, like a calculator is, or does it need to be actual sunlight? Its rainy and cold in Canada, and need to know if I can just sit it on the kitchen table all day (the light is on anyway) and charge it up. Working on a Sun Jar, and have disassembled the outdoor solar light. I want to know if the panel/battery/light is in working order (I found an opened box at H.D. on sale for 1/2 price!) :) Thanks

Hardware/software for indoor digital signage?

Hi, What I would like to build is a digital signage kiosk. I am using a 32" LCD display and wood for the housing but I can't figure out in which direction to go regarding the hardware/software which would breath life in this stuff. Room is not a problem inside the housing, so I could go mini or a normal pc, x64 or ARM. The interface would be rendered in HTML (+java script for animation), which would contain some short (1-2 minute) video clips, but overall the requirements are not that big. So here comes the software decision: windows or android??? Android with smaller lighter (energy saving) hardware or the ARM powered Raspberry Pi is tempting, but maybe in the future I would incorporate touch capabilities which may need a more sophisticated hardware...I am confused, which way to go???? Regards, vedtam

How might I build an indoor living wall?

I was thinking about the research that was done regarding improving indoor air quality, and one idea piqued my curiosity, and that was the concept of a "green wall" also known as a "living wall."Some links:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_wallhttp://appsci.queensu.ca/ilc/greenBuilding/greenwall/greenwall_03.phpGreen wall photo:http://www.ozoux.com/eclectic/archive/2006/10/30/images/greenwall.jpgI'm wondering what the feasability of such a thing would be for a residential home, using items that are either recycled or easily obtained from say a hardware store. I am aware of being able to purchase setups, but they cost a fair bit of money and I thought it might be more interesting if I might construct one myself.

Wiring an indoor extension cord to a small switch?

Hi - I need to take an indoor extension cord like this and wire it to a switch like this. I'm assuming I can just cut one of the two wires within the extension cord and connect either end to a prong on the switch.  Actually, I'm almost positive that will work. The real question here: is it safe? So, will this switch be able to hand the electricity from the outlet running through it? Thanks, Adam

holiday inflatable - giant floating (indoor) balloon

We have a Gemmy inflatable at work (a giant Homer Simpson -- about 8 feet tall) and we were wondering if we could somehow fill it with helium and float it on the ceiling. We're concerned that it's too permeable (when the fan is not going, it deflates FAST).  One idea was to coat the inside with polyurethane (turning the fan on to blow it throughout the balloon) but that seems like it wouldn't work very well (too patchy), and could make it too heavy. Another option would be to take a bunch of balloons, insert them into the Homer, and then inflate the smaller balloons (and tie them off). Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Indoor buzzing door opener with multiple openers

Hey guys, i would really like to have an instruction on how to install and customize a buzzing door opener. i´m kinda a lazy person and i want others to respect my privacy. My family is constantly rushing into my room in the most...lets say awkward situations :D I want the door to my room just to open from the inside or from the outside when pushing the open button. On should be near my pc and one should be near my bed. This would work perfectly if i get one of this buzzing door openers which are used to open the main door to the house. But i dont wanna replace my hole door. Just the metal part where the lock is. Also it would be neat if the openers where wireless. And the lock should work like a normal lock: I put in the key and i come in from the outside like a normal door =) Any one brave enough to take this challenge?
